I don't get how Colorado goes significantly more for McCain after the 'trend' adjustment, even though the average of the most recent 4 polls (all after McCain's bounce had peaked) puts Obama clearly in the lead. Seems like the 'trend adjustment' is doing something untoward here that doesn't make sense.

Do you know the people you talked to would have ever been on Obama's team? Seems to me a Republican rally will attract - Republicans.

The attendance figures demand scrutiny: the place holds 3500 - but you say 1/3 was empty? 1500 people outside? Why didn't they go in? And where did the MC get 10,000 from - or should I ask?

I agree that dumping on Palin is counterproductive. Personally, I like the idea that counter-demo was a plant.

It's laughable to suggest the Democrats, had they controlled Congress, would have spent less.

Vince seems to ignor ethe actualy facts of the last 16 yeqrs, it is a common problem for republicans. The fact that the last democratic administration left with a surplus, and Bush has ballooned it to the highest deficit ever,never seems to matter to these guys.

As for Pakisatan, we need them more than they need us IF you are really worried about the war on terror. I think the whole war on terror is overblown and we made a few guys with a few training camps famous because they got lucky once.

Hoping for Obama.
Read only mode till now, I didn’t want to interfere in your choice, plus ,kicking around in the US blogosphere, I noticed that foreign bloggers are not welcome.
But let me just tell you this:
Here in Italy we have the highest public debt in Europe, let me stress the word:
HI-GH-EST !
Nothing to be proud about.
It’s 1600 Billions of euros currently.
We are 60 million of people, that’s mean we have roughly 27.000 euros (40.000 dollars) pro-capita on our shoulder and this is killing us.
Now, few days ago, I red a commentary just here that your debt is 50 Trillions dollar.
Wow !
I know that you are 300 million of people and that’s mean you have 115.000 euros (172.000 dollars) pro-capita.
Four –and a bit-times bigger than ours!
So dear VinceP1974,
I live in Europe but I know a lot about America because my job took me many times in your country, I am aware that you are a very lovable and friendly people, and just because I like you so much and I am old enough to know your history since RFK, let me tell you that right now in comparison:
Things in your country are REALLY horrible, America is no more the country it used to be, the lighthouse for the western civilization.
Sooner or later China and others will make you to pay back for the money Bush borrowed from them.
And, in my worthless opinion, if McCain is elected ,it will go worse, mostly for regular people , given that it looks like he will follows economic Bush’s path.
That’s all.

OBAMA TRIED TO STALL GIS' IRAQ WITHDRAWAL

WHILE campaigning in public for a speedy withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Sen. Barack Obama has tried in private to persuade Iraqi leaders to delay an agreement on a draw-down of the American military presence.

According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.

"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington," Zebari said in an interview.

Obama insisted that Congress should be involved in negotiations on the status of US troops - and that it was in the interests of both sides not to have an agreement negotiated by the Bush administration in its "state of weakness and political confusion."

"However, as an Iraqi, I prefer to have a security agreement that regulates the activities of foreign troops, rather than keeping the matter open." Zebari says.

Though Obama claims the US presence is "illegal," he suddenly remembered that Americans troops were in Iraq within the legal framework of a UN mandate. His advice was that, rather than reach an accord with the "weakened Bush administration," Iraq should seek an extension of the UN mandate.

While in Iraq, Obama also tried to persuade the US commanders, including Gen. David Petraeus, to suggest a "realistic withdrawal date." They declined.

Obama has made many contradictory statements with regard to Iraq. His latest position is that US combat troops should be out by 2010. Yet his effort to delay an agreement would make that withdrawal deadline impossible to meet.

Supposing he wins, Obama's administration wouldn't be fully operational before February - and naming a new ambassador to Baghdad and forming a new negotiation team might take longer still.

By then, Iraq will be in the throes of its own campaign season. Judging by the past two elections, forming a new coalition government may then take three months. So the Iraqi negotiating team might not be in place until next June.

Petekent, I don't think you could possibly be further off in your analysis. This is Obama's chance to make the McCain=Bush more than just a hollow phrase in the mind of Americans. If he can effectively relay the fact that Bush has overseen this financial disaster and that McCain's economic policies are identical to him. What you are describing is what true fiscal conservatives will think (the Larry Kudlows of the world). You are giving the average American voter way too much credit for having a deeper understanding of financial and economic matters.

The question is, will Obama be able to do his best Bill Clinton impersonation and effectively convey that message? That's a question no one knows for certain.

The Looming Financial Crisis

The apparent failure of Lehman Brothers and the impending sale of Merrill Lynch will send shockwaves through the financial system today.

The thundering herd of traders and speculators will run rampant over the course of the day, driving billions of dollars of value out of the stock market.

We may be in full panic mode by NOON.

The campaigns will be forced to deal with this crisis.

It is as much a crisis of confidence as anything else. The candidates must be careful that what they say does not exacerbate the problem, as the media and their friends in the Democrat Party have done with the economy, eroding consumer confidence and making a bad situation worse.

I suppose at this time of crisis many will want to turn to a former street organizer from Chicago, a product of the corrupt Daley political machine, a man who spent 144 days in the US Senate before feeling the fierce urgency of now, to save them.

Obama has shown nothing but disdain for US business and believes that our tax code needs to be revised out of "fairness" even if it means LESS money for the Treasury.

At times such as these, we are not going to turn to a liberal democrat with socialist leanings and associations to lead us.

While McCain has gotten his knocks on economic matters he represents the steady hand and comes out of a tradition of not politicizing the economy, watch him to bring a steady, if populist spin to this and showcase his economic advisers who number among the most experienced in the country.

Obama has surrounded himself with the usual rag tag of left wing quasi-Marxist advisers who can parrot his party line of higher taxes and the welfare state. They will prove to be inadequate responders. Guys like Volker and Buffet are not going to help Obama here b/c they have too much of a stake in getting this right to support to tout the Obama party line.

Expect a sharp movement to McCain in the tracking polls that get reported on Tuesday and Wednesday, if the markets to crumble today.

Just as the unknown Obama makes folks fearful as Commander in Chief, the people will flee from his as Economist in Chief.

The subtle issues of the financial markets are way above his "pay grade" and his rank inexperience will result in a flood of support melting away from him, if the US financial markets are perceived to be in meltdown.

Again, Americans will want steadiness and resolve and not demagoguery on this crisis. I am betting Obama will not be able to resist himself and will demonstrate a tone deaf ignorance that will cause him to lose support at a crucial time.

Republicans can try whatever they want, they won´t save the levees of history from breaking. Social conservatism is dying, except from the evangelical movement. Demographics are utterly bleak. And the current Republicans party will not win any presidential race after 2016. The current economic model is collapsing, which is, in fact, not just Bush´s and Reagan´s fault, but also Clinton´s. He however knew that there has to be a foundation in the middle class to ensure that the card house at the top of the economy doesn´t collapse.
The Bush government tried to play for time and hoped they wouldn´t have to deal with all this anymore, but that won´t work.
The Republicans are afraid of the change that is coming. Before Obama is sworn in, he will in fact be regarded as some kind of savior. The one to solve the economic, political, and international mess. It´s not necessarily the campaign he runs, but it´s the terrible alternatives to him and everyday´s news that makes people´s lives more insecure.
