I guess, as a (very peripheral) member of the Daily Kos community, I am one of the soulless ones (makes me feel like an extra from a bad remake of "The Mummy"). Blaming Palin's many woes on the lefty blogs may score political points with the chorus on the right, but it really holds no water. I can only speak for Daily Kos as I don't haunt many other blogs, and I can't even really speak FOR them - only OF them.

There were some diaries posted with the wacky conspiracy theories about Sarah, Bristol, and Trig, most by short term members of the blog. Response to them seemed to be at least 95% negative. Typical comments ranged from the practical: "Seriously, who cares?", "This diary is an embarrassment.", "please for the love of god, STOP these...." to the predictably snarky: "I heard it (the baby) looks like John Edwards", "I heard the baby won't wear a flag lapel pin." and my favorite, "anybody check the font on that kids birth certificate?". This would have quietly faded into deserved oblivion if the McCain campaign hadn't spent so much time being outraged about it.

In fact, all the juicy tidbits of gossip (Bristol's pregnancy, allegations of an affair) came from the McCain campaign as outraged denunciations before I ever saw them on Daily Kos.

I don't think so. Too many shots at the media tonight. I'm convinced the affair story is a Republican plant to cultivate the "poor persecuted Palin family" image. That's why McCain drew attention to it right away.

I think they're going to keep her on the ticket because they know getting rid of her is worse. It's admitting she was a poorly vetted pick, and that McCain is a reckless idiot. Which of course he is. But that's besides the point.

I have to hand it to Mike Huckabee. He's the only modern Republican who speaks in such a way that I can disagree with him and not feel attacked. I like Huckabee. I'm glad he's not the Republican candidate. He is far and away the most likable of this year's Republican field.

I don't like Huck for prez, but I think he would have run a better campaign than McCain. McCain never had to work very hard to be elected because his political career was practically handed to him. Huck learned how to run a campaign.

Huck having been a governor would probably have given him a leg up on Obama. Governors usually do better in prez race than senators.

I have no idea how Huck would have done with independents, though.
