It was an underwhelming speech and a fitting end to an uneven convention punctuated only by hatred of Barack Obama. Obviously we're all on the edge of our seats to see what the polls tell us after the weekend. Anything from a 3 point lead for McCain to an 8 point lead for Obama seem possible.

The interesting question now after a summer where McCain spent more money than the Obama camp and after both conventions is how do both sides play the next two months.

I see the Obama camp raising at least $120M to McCain's $84M and maintaining his field offices in MO, VA, CO, GA, IN, NV, PA, MI, NC and NM as well as continuing a pounding on the airwaves. Where does McCain spend his more limited money?

Does he spend precious dollars in IN or NC?

The choice of Palin was a "Hail Mary" thrown by a candidate who was going to lose if he didn't shake things up. If McCain's still losing by next Tuesday, how does he shake things up again?

1)Your candidate runs as a change agent and a reformer, yet his platform screams Generic Republican and he picks a running mate who is about as right wing as they come. Hey McCain (rightfully so IMO) called the Jerry Falwell types "agents of intolerance" and now courts their vote with glee. The Vapid VP was first for the infamous Bridge to Nowhere, then against it. There's some lying and disingenuity for you.

2)Again, completely irrelevant to issues that affect my everyday life. You can look up McCain's role in the Keating 5 but again, I don't care about that, if tangential stuff like that moves your vote, so be it, I prefer to talk about issues which brings me to #3

You could almost say they couldn't give a rats ass about what goes on in and around Baghdad and they would happily accept independence from the state of Iraq. No. I for one am tired of having my tax dollars spent in an area of the world betting on people who have never got along, I'd rather spend that money at home.

1 No EU country has a tax bracket at 90 %. Max is 43 - 45% for the highest echelons.

2 Pubblic per capita health spending is (believe it or not but verify) higher in the US than in France, GB, Italy - all with universal h care.

3 The real outlier is not health but military expenses - this is where US public spending surpasses almost every country in the world by far, except Israel.

As for what makes pubblic healthcare so expensive in the US I think it is that America prefers to spend pubblic money on private organizations (hospitals, lawyers, insurers) and European nations prefers to manage these costs directly.
