I'm a strong democrat, and I'd not ever vote Republican. I do admire John McCain, as a person. My opinion is: I saw a different side to John McCain today. He seemed ill-at-ease, and nervous today, during his announcement of his running mate. He is usually very confident. I'm wondering if Barak's speech last night had him on edge about his seemingly quick made decision?

We've had great presidents with tons of executive experience and we've had horrible presidents with tons of executive experience.

Seriously, you are running the 2004 playbook, but it doesn't work when it also applies to your side. It's not a sitting President running against a Senator. It's a Senator running against a Senator.

And Obama has more leadership experience than McCain. In addition to running his campaign (yes, Axelrod runs the day-to-day operations, but Obama makes the decisions ... much as a President's cabinet runs the day-to-day demands of being President while the President makes the decisions), he led the Harvard Law Review, led a very sucessful organizing operation for many years in Chicago, and led an extremely successful Project Vote campaign in 1992.

I would totally agree with you if McCain had been a general, but he was a soldier. He did what he was told, when he was told. Just like he has been doing everything his advisors have been telling him to do during this campaign.

What a shame. I used to have so much respect for McCain. I'm a Democrat, but I would have voted for McCain over Gore in 2000. I would have voted for McCain over Kerry in 2004. But now, McCain is proving that he will say and do ANYTHING to be elected. What a fraud.

The fact that she is so NEW and America can't get used to her that quickly (look how long it took/is taking Obama) will be a liability for McCain. It is an unbelievable pander but he is banking on:
1.Getting those Hillary supporters
2.Energizing the base fully so he can run HARD to the center
3.Hope they all vote for the top of the ticket and don't pay much attention to her liabilities. When the media REALLY starts grilling her and taking that shine off the pander will come to light.

Antoine, unless she says or does something really stupid, I would be very surprised if the Obama campaign says anything negative about Sarah Palin in between now and election. They don't need to. The media and blogosphere are already having a field day with her thin resume.

Biden, of course, will have to debate her and the Obama camp would be very wise to have him start practicing for that right now. He needs to be calm, respectful and leave it up to the media to point out any huge errors she might make. He doesn't want to look like a bully, but I think it will be very clear to the average viewer how far out of her league, she is.

Of course, Biden has been known to say some pretty stupid (and insensitive) things in the past, so that will be the debate wild card.

As for one side imploding. My money is on McCain. I would give very good odds to McCain losing his temper and turning bright red in one of the debates. Ahh, VC, not true in reality or perception, and it's perception that really matters. McCain's bullshit celebrity attack and the Clinton fight in the primary has made him seem like he's been around forever, and the idea that he's inexperienced, which may be arguably true, seems ludicrous. We are not, as a people, possessors of long attention spans and the collective memory lasts about 18 months. Palin makes Obama seem like a grizzled veteran, and McCain (obtuse hothead that he is) misread the situation and blew it.

It always humors me how partisans, especially Obama supporters, can never step out of their own shoes and view tactical campaign decisions from the perspective of an undecided voter. Of course a politically motivated liberal woman - the kind who posts to a website for political junkies and scholars - sees Palin's selection as a shameless pander. An opponent can do no right in the eyes of a partisan.

From the perspective of an undecided female voter, possibly one with deep reservations about Obama's values and what he truly stands for, the Palin pick is a REAL-LIFE acknowledgement by McCain that women matter to him and will play a significant role in his administration. Obama can declare his devotion to women's issues (in WORDS), but in the first test of his potential presidency, he passed over an eminently qualified and deserving woman out of nothing more than spite to settle on a safe, uncontroversial, and uninspired choice - safe not the least of which because he was male.

Lost in all of your blind partisan diatribes is the fact that McCain's selection took a lot of GUTS and was not at all an easy decision to make. THAT'S the kind of commander-in-chief that I seek -- one who will do what's RIGHT, what his conscience and principle dictate, regardless of the political consequences. And make no mistake, breaking this particular glass ceiling in the Republican Party is an important and historic occasion, one which will be increasingly appreciated with the passage of time.

I think the ideal pick for John McCain would have been a 45-year-old Latina governor with five kids (one in the armed forces) who was a firebrand (who you could never dream of implying was a token woman or not her own person etc), who owned guns, opposed abortion, could go on every Spanish-speaking media and argue her case in Spanish.

I guess Sarah Palin is the nearest the GOP could find. Will she make it harder for a few Hillary fans to go for Obama? Perhaps for a few, especially with nasty attacks reminding them of the brutal primary campaign. Will it be enough? On its own, I doubt it.

One factor worth bearing in mind: the Libertarians will tend to support her, so it could neutralise Bob Barr somewhat, and the LP does have a record of endorsing candidates from other parties they approve of. Also I think we can scrub Alaska as an Obama target (though the Senate seat still looks a shoo-in for the Democrats to me).

Attack Palin and you will hear a lot of "that's another woman the Obama camp is dissing..." It's an interesting pick. Don't assume it will fail.

More worrying for Obama is that your state by state card shows not much change in the past week: only Nevada's tipped over joining Colorado, Iowa and New Mexico. That's hardly a landslide. With the GOP convention so close, momentum may be hard to hold, unless the GOP mess it up!

McCain has not lost this election yet. Which is amazing given the power of Barack Obama. My gut feeling is one side will implode.
