I don't think it was a deliberate comment for a very simple reason - Obama is trying to reach out to independents and undecideds (etc), and there's just too much potential to do harm with this, it can't possibly be outweighed by some potential gain.
Only a complete idiot would fail to note the inevitable reaction to this comment were it pre-meditated, and Obama is hardly an idiot. It's certainly not going to drive people into his arms, and in Imagination Land it would have no negative impact at all. In Reality Land, a massive negative blowback is inevitable, and every single Independent and left-leaner who saw this and believes it was intentional or reveals some underlying sexism just took a big step toward McCain.

I don't think it was deliberate at all. He's used the comment before, and he was trying to connect to a crowd of rural voters, a group he has problems relating to. If you listen to his tone and stammering, it's pretty obvious he's reaching about in his head for a nice folksy idiom to match the comment he just made - it doesn't seem like a premeditated or practiced line.

A good attack line, subtle or overt, comes across cleanly and has to be either uniquely inspired in the moment or thought out and (for a good politician) practiced a bit to make sure it comes off correctly. This had neither practice nor forethought evident in its delivery.

If it was deliberate, Obama seemed too surprised at the quick reaction for them to have expected anyone but the commentariat to notice right away.

I wonder if Obama is trying out things that might provoke McCain into showing his temper. I think Obama came across as weak and wishy-washy in his Olberman interview (trying too hard to seem level headed and avoid calling McCain or the people lying to McCain the liars they have proved to be) rather than showing how he would stand up to Putin telling lies.

That overly calm John Kerry style could play better than it has if McCain goes positively ballistic during one of the debates.

Does anyone in the Senate have a short list of hot buttons for J Sidney the Third that are guaranteed to get him insanely, steaming mad if slipped into an answer?

This is the opening the Dems needed. I want to see Obama stomping on these folks and telling crowds "You see what I mean? I talk about their failures of policy, they talk about silly social issues. You know why? BECAUSE THEY HAVE NOTHING!"

I'm tired of seeing Obama trying to be the good guy. You can be the good guy and have passion, and stomp on these slimy bastards who debase our poilitcs with their misdirection plays. And people aren't smart enough to come to their senses about it, unless you MAKE THEM FACE IT.

So what Obama needs to do is make people face up to the GOP's sad record and empty agenda, and tell them that this country has to demand better. If he makes that argument, the lipstick line may prove to be one of the final turning points, along with a strong debate against a befuddled McCain.

Schools, not kindergarteners. If you watch the video you see that Obama keeps the distinction up. And when he "quoted" Alan Keyes he was parodying him, meaning he exaggerated what Keyes said to him.

And "age-appropriate" at a low age means: "Don´t follow that stranger..." And that´s the right thing to do. You should link that video at other places. It gives a very good impression of Obama´s position.
