Nate, I love you, but you are wrong on the tax cuts. The long term problem that the nation faces is too LOW a level of national savings. Any solution to our short term problem (ie the recession) will involve a reduction in national savings for any given level of GDP because the solution will necessarily involve an increase in the government deficit. The trick is to keep the short term decrease in national savings as small as possible while still propelling the economy back to full employment. Government spending does this MUCH more effectively than tax cuts because: 1) Government spending has more "bang for the deficit buck" in terms of increasing aggregate demand, employment and GDP, and 2) Government spending can be on capital projects which increase national savings. We DON'T want to encourage consumption with tax cuts or otherwise - that has been the biggest structural problem for the economy since the 1990's. Having taken Macroeconomics at the University of Chicago, you can be forgiven for not knowing any of this, so you're still a hero.

Oh, I won't argue that there weren't some things left unchecked that contributed to the current malaise...but that's just one of many factors.

What happened in the broadest sense possible is that credit/capital became too accessible to too many people and they abused it. In "keeping up with the Joneses", people burned through money like it was paper doused with gasoline and drove prices (unrealistically) higher for a number of things, but namely their home. Buoyed by an unsustainable level of "home equity", the public then proceeded to wreak further havoc by spending money they really didn't have.

And quite simply, the unsustainability has caught up with us, and it's all come crashing down. The problem is that we're trying to step in and keep it from "crashing" further. But what people don't realize is that the "crash" is actually a good thing as prices (for practically everything) are restored to a more reasonable level and where the market will "clear" at that price.

You hear how some people twist this and cry over "deflationary spiral" yet they don't realize that the free market is allocating the good/resource/service in a way to where it's most efficiently used. But you don't get that. Politicians don't get that. And they want to tamper. The longer we try and hold on and not let things "crash," the longer we'll be mired in funk with a market that isn't operating efficiently. If it's allowed to do what it's supposed to do, then it's just that much quicker that we can pick up the pieces and move forward with the engine running.

You can't have the free market when times are "good" and then socialize when times are "bad." It doesn't work that way.

However, we can tighten these credit markets with more and more regulation, but it'll just make it harder for people who are already behind to catch up with little/no access to capital. Of course, then we'll have to hear all of the howling about discrimination towards the poor and minorities.

So let's just socialize the idiots who don't know how to use credit/capital (which is anywhere from 25-50% of the country) and tell them how to spend it so they won't muck up things again and let the rest of us enjoy the "free market" who can use it responsibly.

When your strongest argument is "the Great Depression might not have been as bad if the government had done nothing, but who knows," you're treading on pretty thin ice. Unfortunately for you, the current conservative canard that FDR made the Depression worse is mainly being argued by political operatives like Grover Norquist supported by cherry-picked statistics, and the counter-argument is mainly being made by Nobel Prize-winning economists with a bundle of historical data to support it.

After the trashing the economy has received from unregulated derivatives markets established under the market-worshipping dogma that government regulation is always bad, the vast majority of Americans have gotten a clue. You might want to try it.

I know some would say (especially the 538 faithful) there isn't even a debate about the 1929 crash and ensuing Depression...that if FDR hadn't "socialized" practically everything in this country that we'd have slipped to third world status instead of just staying mired in the mess for several years. In other words, we got the lesser of two evils, but a recovery was still a long ways away.

I think we may be on the precipice of a practically identical situation just in the modern era. Obama has essentially one of two choices - to follow FDR's lead and "socialize" or allow more market forces to work things out.

We never kmew what would have happened had FDR (or someone else) taken their hands off the reins and let the country figure things out on its own in the 1930s, so we can conjecture all day, but the fact remains that with all of the "socializing" that could be heaped on the economy, we still wound up with a pretty shitty decade.

I think we're looking at much the same. The more government tampers with this mess, the more drawn out it is. Oh, there will be some pockets of the country benefit that otherwise might take a harder hit should things be left alone, but overall it will be a net loss to pour billions into an economy that simply needs a few months to right itself.

To quote Spock: the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few (or the one). Unfortunately, our government is in the business of helping out one (or a few) to the detriment of the vast majority of people.
