I apologize that we haven't been able to write somewhat more regularly during the past couple of days. In contrast to something like, say, the conventions, which are more or less contained in one place, the events in DC are spread out all over the city, and significant amounts of one time are spent traveling and queuing.
To give you some sense for what we're dealing with, I was on the yellow line on the Metro this morning headed to L'Enfant Plaza, where I had to pick up an inauguration ticket at my friend's place. All of the sudden, as we're just meters away from the station, the conductor announces cheerily: "Sorry, L'Enfant Plaza is now closed. The next stop is Pentagon". So this train full of people, thinking they are heading to L'Efant Plaza so that they can walk over to the Mall, are instead hurtling at 60 MPH toward Virginia, where they very much don't want to be going.
When the train arrives at the Pentagon station, there are huge lines to get up the escalators toward the shuttle buses they have waiting outside. So someone gets the bright idea to begin walking up the down escalator ... and dozens of people start following him. Before long, there are two think columns of people -- black, white, the young, the old, the healthy, the frail -- marching up the down escalator, as couple a police officer looks on haplessly and helplessly. And the people are chanting, quite naturally, "Yes we can!".

It was an interesting day to watch the news for sure. Even more interesting was watching the online comments. There were *lots* of people basically yelling "Hooray!" There were also a lot of bitter, bitter posts and vieled threats to the new president from the sore losers (and you know who you are).
Count me as one of the Hooray-ers! :^)
wv: diumm! We can finally call him "President Obama" now!
first?
Come tomorrow morning the party will be over and the hard work of fixing our country will begin.
Is it true then that Bush did NOT issue any controversial last minute pardons?
lol - a nice analogy for our current national condition after 8 years of Bush & Cheney
the people must take things into their own hands to get something done - including one & all, old & young marching UP the DOWN excalator !!!
pix please !
@andrew: Now that you mention it, I didn't hear anything about any last-day pardons except for those two border-patrol agents, which really wasn't all that controversial. In fact, he didn't appear to do much at all this past week. Was his heart just not in it anymore?
I wonder...
@Nate: "amount of one time are spent . . ."
Should be: "amount of one's time is spent. . ."
@Nate: " two think columns of people -- black, white, the young, the old, the healthy, the frail -- marching up the down escalator, as couple a police officer looks. . . ."
Should be: "two thick column . . . as a couple of polic officers look. . ."
I noticed that very nearly the first thing that Obama said as president was wrong: He said that he was the 44th American to take the presidential oath of office. While he's the 44th president, Grover Cleveland was both 22nd and 24th, so Obama's only the 43rd to take the oath.
That (and botching the oath of office) aside, I think that he did well, and I'm really looking forward to his administration.
unrem: Sleep where your eyes aren't moving rapidly.
@ Juris: Should be: "two thick column . . . as a couple of polic officers look. . ."
Should be "police."
(I couldn't resist.)
PRESIDENT OBAMA! HUZZAH!!!!
@Juris: Not to nit-pick, but if you're going to correct someone's spelling make sure you spell your corrections better than the original writer. =)
@Bill: It was Chief Justice Roberts that originally botched the oath, not Obama. Obama merely repeated the botched version although you could tell that he caught Robert's mistake on the fly. After the oath got stumbled through a bit, he did a nice recovery in his speech afterwards.
Oh, sweet Jebus. From the AP:
WASHINGTON - One of President Barack Obama's first acts as president was to order federal agencies to halt all pending regulations until his administration can review them.
The order went out Tuesday afternoon, shortly after Obama was inaugurated president, in a memorandum signed by new White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. The notice of the action was contained in the first press release sent out by Obama's White House, and it came from deputy press secretary Bill Burton.
And here we go! Somebody pass the champagne.
I run a website for nyc break dancers (bboys) and I was so inspired by the inauguration I posted some Obama Inspired art on the main page...check it out.

Still can't believe Bush appointee Roberts flubbed the constitution. Definately the biggest sour note of the entire inauguration, now that Teddy Kennedy is recovering from the earlier scare.
As for Obama, he definately jumped the gun just a tad at the beginning, but Roberts flub was unforgivable. At least he presumably apologized later on.
Rick Warren was unbelievably hamfisted. Rev. Lowery showed how it SHOULD be done. Obama should not have invited Warren to give the invocation. Not because he's a homophobe, but because he proved again today that he's a buffoon.
The walk down Pennsylvania Avenue and Parade was the best ever. Obama getting out the motorcade was great, and Biden was priceless.
I'm surprised the Roberts-Obama perplex over the Oath is generating so much negative/blame-game attention. I was listening and I thought it a brief comedy of errors in which two pros couldn't get it right and so, like pros, they moved on. Harmless and memorable. Believe me, should they find themselves in similar circumstances four years from now, they'll nail it and the crowd will go wild.
Still can't believe Bush appointee Roberts flubbed the constitution.
He accidentally stumbled across a couple of words. Lighten up.
Definately the biggest sour note of the entire inauguration
Wow. Hyperbole much. A man accidentally transposes a word or two and your day is ruined.
now that Teddy Kennedy is recovering from the earlier scare.
Hopefully, he recovers fully or goes peacefully without pain or suffering.
As for Obama, he definately jumped the gun just a tad at the beginning, but Roberts flub was unforgivable.
Unforgivable? Again, use much hyperbole? Maybe someone should follow you around prepared to give you a merciless flogging as soon as you stumble over a word or two.
At least he presumably apologized later on.
He did. No need to throw in "presumably" as if to raise doubts. He's the classiest person on the SCOTUS. I don't understand your hatred.
Rick Warren was unbelievably hamfisted.
Again, why the hate?
Rev. Lowery showed how it SHOULD be done.
Whatever.
Obama should not have invited Warren to give the invocation.
He did. No ruthless or sinister consequences came from it, so let's move on shall we. Only the bitter far left are still dwelling on this.
Not because he's a homophobe, but because he proved again today that he's a buffoon.
That's your opinion, which you're entitled to, but by most objectionable standards, a man who has committed and dedicated himself to numerous worthwhile causes that have had a positive effect on hundreds of thousands of people is a "buffoon" that most people would much rather put up with than an angry liberal troll who uses a name synonymous with an erection.
The walk down Pennsylvania Avenue and Parade was the best ever. Obama getting out the motorcade was great, and Biden was priceless.
Whatever. Doesn't take much to entertain you. Glad you enjoyed the moment, but unfortunately it's not all glitz and glitter and parades and such. We have work to do. Remember?
You probably don't as you're still too caught up in all of the navel-gazing and self-adulation that has permeated the political atmosphere, primarily on the left. I hope it subsides long enough for some of you to actually come back to reality. I'll wait and see.
Welcome to Washington DC. Thanks for coming and being part of the events. Now go home.
...the Roberts-Obama perplex over the Oath is generating so much negative/blame-game attention...
It's only the far left that is in anguish over the slip. They're showing that no matter who is in office, their bitterness knows no bounds.
Points well taken, guys. I was interrupted before I edited, then posted and ran off without doing it.

sheesh - your critiques contribute NOTHING & lack wit since they have a dull edge
annoying drivel just about sums you posts up

The idea to have 100,000s of people walk towards the Mall at Independence Avenue while the cops limited the lanes open to pedestrians and ambulances hollered pointlessly was only comparable to the complete incompetence of the police and organizers to manage the direction of the crowd flow.
DCM,
Forgive me, but I take umbrage at the fact someone would use a slip of the tongue by a conservative member of the SCOTUS to make a charge of it being a crime against humanity. Maybe nothing will be said by the rest of you liberal watchdogs, but I have a say and am exercising it.
This sort of thing shows just how lucky we Brits are to have a queen.
The Royal Family does the pomp while the Prime Minister lives at number 10 and gets on with the job.
If you want we could probably spare Charles (please).
God, I'm tired of hearing this "who flubbed the oaf?" argument. Jesus, does it matter where the adverb goes? Here's a good synopsis from poligazette.com:
"There has been some debate among bloggers about the oath President Obama took earlier today. Liberal bloggers argue that conservative Chief Justice Roberts flubbed the oath, which caused Obama to do the same. Conservatives (and others) ignore Roberts’ mistake and focus solely on Obama, blaming him entirely for the mistake.
So, what actually happened? First, did Obama flub the oath, if so, did Roberts flub it as well? Lets have a look at the transcript:
ROBERTS: I, Barack Hussein Obama…
OBAMA: I, Barack…
ROBERTS: … do solemnly swear…
OBAMA: I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear…
ROBERTS: … that I will execute the office of president to the United States faithfully…
OBAMA: … that I will execute…
ROBERTS: … faithfully the office of president of the United States…
OBAMA: … the office of president of the United States faithfully…
ROBERTS: … and will to the best of my ability…
OBAMA: … and will to the best of my ability…
ROBERTS: … preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
OBAMA: … preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
ROBERTS: So help you God?
OBAMA: So help me God.
ROBERTS: Congratulations, Mr. President.
The transcript makes clear that Justice Roberts made a mistake first, then corrected it, after which President Obama repeated the mistake not the correct version. In other words, both flubbed the oath, Roberts corrected himself, Obama did not.
More important than the flub, though, is that the message stays the same; the meaning of the sentence does not change. Shorter; there’s no use in debating the issue since it doesn’t matter whether Obama flubbed it and if so why."

FReeptard Central is missing a wingnut tonight.
Edge, your entire response to my post was hyperbole.
Today, of all days. I was deprived my freedom of speech on Real Clear Markets(RCM). Why? Because I said the following acronym: SOB. This was not because I enunciated it as an insult hurled at an adversary. but because I used it in a moment of excitement because I took joy that someone agreed with me. The point was actually a point that most would consider rather right wing. I said that I thought a corporate deduction for dividends would be reasonable.
I no longer share that opinion based on how it was recieved. I now think that the best way foreward would be to tax corporations at a 100% rate and we shall give them back some of our money if we so shall please.
Don't expect anything from the right wing. They will do anything and everything to try and stop us. Don't give up the dream. Don't ever give in. Do anything and everything to stop them. God Bless America!

Now for the "Moment of Zen", brought to you by my sister-in-law:
Q: Do you know why Cheney couldn't walk?
A: He threw his back out fucking the country 8 years straight.
Sorry for the off-topic; felt compelled to share :)

My company had a great service. It is a fortune 500 company that uses a Direct Feed system for "all hands" meetings. Well, instead of listening to our higher ups tell us something, they webcast the WHOLE inauguration, from 7 am to 7 pm ON THE COMPANY FEED. Since it was all internal, no slowing down because people were bombarding a particular web site. CNN coverage.
It was all there on my work computer, with company approval to watch it. The best part was watching Dick "Mr Potter" Cheney do his best Lionel Barrymore adaptation of dude in Wheelchair being evil in "It's a Wonderful Life"
I must say, HOORAY!!!!!!!!!
Northern Virginia was EMPTY today.
You know, I'd kinda like one day where no one analyzes anything and we just enjoy the moment.
I'm not letting an oath flub or random other things trouble my day.
Although damn, Nate, good luck with the mob madness in DC. That city is hard enough to get through on a normal day!
Tomorrow we can start taking a look at the new administration in action!
I love your story, Nate, because it shows how even the aggravation of the Metro was met with humor and imagination! Let's see if we can bring this spirit to all the things we have to do now.
jeff—
Just to be clear, the Chief Justice's correction still has faithfully in a wrong, if different, place and at that point the new President just went with yet another version and the Chief Justice moved on to the next phrase.
I thought it totally understandable and amusing. Two pros find they aren't in sync and that their initial attempts to get in sync are just making things worse and move on.
Stories like this seemed to happen all over the district today and over the last few days. The compassion and friendliness of everyone in the capital over the past few days was infectious. It felt like everyone was there for a big party, and to congratulate one another for a job well done, and nothing -- nothing -- was going to stop anyone from enjoying the day(s).
My favorite little random thing that happened over and over again was you would get on a Metro and people would just automatically ask "where did you come from?" It was amazing hearing the varied answers, and interesting ones (Alaska, Hawaii, etc) led to interesting conversations about the political climates there.
Although the exiting of the National Mall was the most confusing, frustrating and under-organized thing that I could have imagined, even standing in a street with complete 100% gridlock, almost no one was angry, and everyone was willing to help one another.
No matter what Obama can or cannot pull off in the next four years, the hope that was on the minds of so many people these past days was amazing. It gives me great hope for the future, something that the previous administration completely failed to deliver on.
GOAT
glad you had a great day !
from the first person accounts on WaPo blogs & elsewhere, apparently tens of thousands of ticket holders were made to stand in lines for hours & never got close to being allowed onto the mall
thousands who came from all over the country reduced to tears & frustration due to beauracratic incompetence
same on the parade route - we were wondering why there were so few people along the path & all the empty seats in the bleachers
again the security refused access to many people who are now still crying bitter tears...
on TV it looked like folks left the parade as soon as Obama went past
so sad for them
I loved Rev Lowery's benediction - but it appeared on TV that most of the crowd on the mall had already stampeded toward the exits
but there was next to no crowd energy picked up during the Obama speech - very subdued & off-putting imho
maybe it was the many hours waiting in the January cold for all except the usual VIPs up front who as usual are more equal than others with their heaters & special access...
still, I HOPE for better days
but I personally found Obama's speech rather personally harsh on Bush [not that he did not deserve that & much more] for someone who claims he is a concilliator - and Obama was way too militarily aggressive imho in his warning to those who 'oppose us'
THAT is GOPer big stick talk
his speech left me feeling empty. It was certainly not my cup of herbal tea at all today, and I saw BHO numerous times in person during the campaign here in FL & he always was able to lift me UP
today I feel let down instead
I think he looked & sounded overly somber & scolding ['childish'] - not optimistic or hopeful enough for the times
maybe he is/was tired or stressed or distracted cuz it showed in his face & eyes especially
think that maybe Roberts & Warren got in his head ???
my image of BHO today was that he was a GRIM schoolteacher rather than a uplifting pre4acher
opportunity missed - hope he gets another shot at it but he should lower the POMP & CIRCUMSTANCES next time as today was over the top & gaudily ostentatious for the times despite his stern lecture to the contrary
not a great example was set by endless $$$ spent on ceremony & galas tonight when you are calling for sacrifice
maybe just me in the 'grand' scheme of things
BUT I am happy for you that you enjoyed the historic experience & witness the end of the Bush/Cheney reign of terror
the visual image of Cheney in the wheelchair & Bush being razzed by the asembled crowd as he flew away in disgrace on the helicopter - now THAT was GREAT !!!
If this post isn't a perfect metaphor for today and the next four years, I don't know what is. We've got a hell of a down escalator to climb up, all together. Thanks.
I arrived in Mandel Hall on the campus of the University of Chicago, where Obama once taught. I got there just before 10:30 CST (ie half-hour before the swearing-in) and soon it was packed. The people were amazing, responding as one to each detail, from the slightly peculiar way Rick Warren said "Sasha and Malia", to rising up when Sen. Feinstein asked the crowd in DC to rise: first for Biden, then all of us for the President.
Short of being in Washington, DC itself, I'm not sure there's a better place to have watched the inauguration.
One thing I am particularly thankful for, is that as far as I can tell, there have been no reports of any serious harm coming from the great number of people descending on the capital. I feared that so many people there at once, something would go wrong, and cast a pall over the occasion.
Shortly after the inauguration, passing by a TV set up in the bookstore for this occasion, I hear something about Ted Kennedy being taken out of the luncheon. Shaken and fearing the worst, I rushed back to my dorm and was relieved to discover he was not on his deathbed, and now seems to be all right.
All in all, I feel there is much to be thankful for.
That being said, I think Robert flubbed a bit more (though I agree they both moved on with a minimum of fuss). Notice Roberts also said "President to the United States" the first time, and, as has been mentioned, did not correct himself correctly. Slightly amusing, not a cause for bruhaha.
Oh, and I wish Wolf Blitzer hadn't talked over John Williams's piece.
Today was a wasted opportunity.
The day was dark enough already, I would have thought that the terrorists would have attacked Washington DC yesterday.
It was the perfect chance for them and they blew it.
At least someone could have salvaged the wasted opportunity and assassinated him.
Then, the day would not have been a total waste to the terrorists.
WTF is with these murderous, lunatic trolls, oozing their filth all over this blog with wishes of death for the President of the United States? Has Mule Rider been reincarnated as rays242? Where's the site moderator? Where's the Secret Service?
I don't ever recall reading withes of death toward Bush. It's telling how hate and violence seems to always vomit from the mouths of the Right, then in their next sentence they evoke "Christian values". Hypocrites to the end!
rays242:
You have much to learn, grasshopper. Come on over and join the rest of us in the light of sweet reason. We won't hurt you (well, maybe just a little bit, the first time - but after that it feels really good. I promise).
I have to agree with the above two posts. I've been a long-time reader of 538, and have become a more recent poster (since before the election). The one thing I love about the forums is the intelligence and liveliness of the discussions. Even when I get tired of some discussions that get overly personal, for the most part I still like reading them for insight and personal honesty that is displayed therein.
They-who-shall-not-be-named have recently poisoned the forums with their death-threats against the President and threats of personal injury against the site owner. I know Nate Silver is very perfectly aware of the problem (he did throw Mule Rider off the site with a bit of fanfare), but what this site needs is a decent volunteer moderator system. I know how to use a scroll button, but even the scroll is not immune to repeat posts about how much someone wants to kill or hurt someone else. At times, it's as though these posts take up every other entry, drowning out all the thoughtful discussion.
IT NEEDS TO STOP.
Please.
I would never want anyone to hurt Nate Silver...he is an awesome guy!
So I am not one of those trolls!
And I tend not to repeat my posts too much, but I will repeat my last one here for the morning shift:
Yesterday was a wasted opportunity.
The day was dark enough already, I would have thought that the terrorists would have attacked Washington DC yesterday.
It was the perfect chance for them and they blew it.
At least someone could have salvaged the wasted opportunity and assassinated him.
Then, the day would not have been a total waste to the terrorists.
Dave: The personal threats and attacks on this site have indeed been bullshit.
But given that a lot of the blogs I read are heavily moderated (and BORING), it's pretty sexy that Nate still just lets it fly here and is generally loath to moderate except under the most egregious circumstances.
Let the haters whine. It's fun.

I Miss You :)
Nate, did you get to throw your shoes at Bush and Cheney on their way out the door?
Try not to miss this time :)
Edge needs to get a grip on reality and start growing up. He/she has so far made a number of very silly points, most of which are either delusional or unpleasant.
But I prefer the unmoderated site - because I HATE waiting!
Sorry that DCM was underwhelmed by the speech. I don't know what more Obama could have said in the circumstances, seeing the tightrope he's on at the moment.
It is more of a shame that security screwed up the day for people unnecessarily - kind of a metphor for the last 8 years really.
We hope for better things. The first few announcements (including halting the Guantanamo tribunals) seem like a good start.
As for Rick Warren, he probably shouldn't have been there at all, but he certainly did not come out of it with an enhanced reputation. The other guy (Lowery?) wowed everyone, on the other hand.
Mark A.S.
Wow- You are all fired up- Good luck with that! Let me know what I can do to help.
Ok all I have a question.
How does BHO reconcile the statement that
1) "We will not apologize for our way of life nor will we waiver in its defense"
with
2) "nor can we consume the worlds resources without regard to effect"
I hope he means we as a nation will invest in change and innovation that reduces US consumption and eliminates the burden that it puts on this planet and the people of this planet.
I hope what he wants to defend is our commitment to equality, freedom of thought, valuing difference, valuing innovation, and not our unbridled consumption.
WV CONSEV- No joke- how great is that CONSEV CONSEV CONSEV!!!!!
I took it that he meant freedom and democracy he would not apologise for, but would try and do something about the consumption of resources. His message on consumption was not actually much different to what Jimmy Carter said - it's just that Obama knew how to say it without alienating everyone.
I only got to read Nate's entire post on the morning of the 21st (I saw it up on the night of the 20th), but by the time I read it, I had already heard the story. A Brazilian network's news show told the same story, right down to the "yes we can" chant, and showed footage of people going up the "down" escalator.
I saw bits and pieces of a few different networks' news stories about and analysis of the inauguration yesterday and last night. I think the first time I saw the Obamas walking parts of the parade route and waving (between and during a few business-related phone calls), it was live. There were some factual errors (e.g.: who flubbed the oath of office; and the zombie lie about outgoing Clinton staffers vandalizing the White House and removing the "W" keys from all the computers, now told in Portuguese), and the more right-wing commentators, the same ones who keep telling us Lula, the Brazilian president, isn't popular, even though opinion polls continue to show him enjoying very healthy positive ratings, basically tried to argue that Obama is all hype and now that he actually has to start governing, the people will soon be abandoning him. But overall, the news stories here in Brazil focused on the visible effect this inauguration had on the people of the US, and on hopes for Obama to improve relations between the US and the rest of the world and to do his part in confronting the economic crisis and making needed changes in the US.
The reporting on the inauguration on TV here in Brazil gave just enough attention to Obama being the first black president. Specifically, they mentioned that he's African-American, that he's the first African-American president, that he did not talk much about that during the campaign, and a few poll numbers about how people in the US felt about a black man becoming president. They went into racial breakdowns from the polls and talked about the emotions of African-Americans in attendance yesterday, showing footage of the reactions of a few.
But a pleasant surprise to me was that while the racial angle was mentioned and explored in just enough detail, it wasn't the main focus of the reporting or the analysis. I had expected Brazilian TV news showss to make a bigger deal out of that and miss a lot of the other important aspects of the significance of Obama's inauguration, but they really kept the focus on the huge differences between Bush and Obama and what the transition from one to the other would mean to the US, the world, and briefly, what it would mean to Brazil, another thing I thought they'd discuss way too much but didn't.
I have found Brazilian TV coverage of Brazilian politics shameful and biased, and Brazilian coverage of news from the US (especially the campaign) full of misunderstood information and downright ignorance of the facts behind certain issues and debates, but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the coverage of the inauguration.
"basically tried to argue that Obama is all hype and now that he actually has to start governing, the people will soon be abandoning him."
Of course that is what is going to happen. You think the average person is really going to keep up with Obama's policies?
They will hear one thing they do not like and start complaining.
I cannot be accused of that, because I never supported him in the first place.
Everyone will see...come Christmas 2009, the novelty of Obama will have worn off and his approval ratings will drop below 50%.
@Mrs. B-
I hope you are right- I am just afraid that he is playing into that very common theme I hear from some Americans Never Apologize-regardless of the magnitude of the damage you have inflicted. It is a strange strategy, but I have heard it frequently.
I fear much slight of hand in BHO's behavior- not that I do not trust his ability or intention. I am confident that he will serve above and beyond.
- but he is allowing people to believe in things that he knows cannot persist. Lincoln promised in his first inaugural that he had no intention of ending slavery- Thank goodness Lincoln did not follow through on that promise.
I hope Obama is willing to apologize for the way we use energy and human labor.
1. I liked the bit where they sang 'God Save the Queen'.
2. Is '538' a 'think column' in a 1984-sense?
3. Good thing that the oath was not essential to that big-eared one becoming president.
4. rays242 was Obama's biggest supporter always and I blame him for everything.
Somebody send a wire to Taegan Godless: it is not difficult to mock Snowbama.
Okay, so yesterday I was in class during the Inuaguration. Could have skipped, knew Warren was going to piss me off, decided it was better to get a grade than watch hypocrisy at the coming out party of a man I otherwise admire.
In the student lounge during lunch, the TV just kept talking about minutiae at the Presidential welcoming lunch. CNN zoomed in upon pics of Rahm Emmanuel, and commented on things like the manner in which he held the salad fork. Went home before they started comparing the relative food chewing techniques of the cabinet.
Downloaded the inauguration from CSPAN. Yes, I use my iPod to listen to CSPAN. Went to the computer lab to work on a report. Got to Rick Warren's speech and my blood pressure shot through the roof. My hands were shaking and my vision started to grow dim. I got nauseous, but it tasted like bile. The anger was so intense I shut the iPod off and got up and walked out, assignment still unfinished, because I was afraid I would make a public scene. I was still shaking when I made it to the door.
Walked for a bit, calmed myself, then fast forwarded to the Big O's speech. It was good, but diminished by Pastor Hateful's invocation before it. Kind of like trying to enjoy a beautiful creme brulee that some asshole urinated on in front of me.
Saw the whitehouse.gov website's stuff about GLBT civil rights protections being on Obama's agenda. It felt like an apology. I accepted that apology tentatively-I'm going to hold out and give him the chance to live up to his promises. Then I felt a little ridiculous for getting that wrapped up over a speech by a guy I'll never meet. I never get that worked up over sexual relationships, so why should I feel jilted by Obama?
This morning, the Al Franken campaign sent me another email. I had tried donating to their recount fund even though I had gone over the max for the election. Turns out I overmaxed that too. Man, this credit card bill is gonna suck ass.
What was it that Cheney said? "Democracy is sometimes messy and inconvenient?" This was democracy, and out of the chaos emerged beauty and grace. At least in the eye of this beholder. Who was back near the Lincoln Memorial. Didn't matter. We were there, we were together, and we can do this thing.
Get to work now y'all.
I absolutely love the image of a phalanx of folk tromping up the down escalator chanting "yes we can." Thank you for the imagery.
Not a 'phalanx of folk' say rather a 'bunch of gimps'.
And, Nate I hope you bought your Obama condoms and took as many of those gimps as your vast sexual appetite could handle.
I went to the inauguration too, sat on the mall starting at 7:30, left right after his speech. Then watched the first part of the parade to let the metro clear up. The crowds were insane. So many people, with a large percentage of them who hadn't planned out their exit.
But, I could have done without the extensive booing when President Bush was shown on the screens. One: there is little to say that he knew he was being shown, plus the few second delay altered everything. Two: He is now back in Texas. Once that Marine helicopter went over you knew he was gone.
One question: What happened to Cheney? Why was he in a wheelchair?
Cheney got into a limo - and left for parts unknown (although, he unfortunately likely did not go far - McLean, VA).
@ DCM (Just parts):
"from the first person accounts on WaPo blogs & elsewhere, apparently tens of thousands of ticket holders were made to stand in lines for hours & never got close to being allowed onto the mall"
I can't imagine this to be true if the people who came had done any planning. The gates opened at 8:00 (but really opened at 7:30ish) to let people onto the mall, and the security check was quite speedy and was completely large enough to handle the crowds. In fact, by about 8:45, it seemed as if almost all of the ticketed people got in as the stream of people had been reduced to a trickle. Having said that, I saw people entering up until about 9:30.
If people came and didn't arrive by 9:30 and then got turned away, I can't feel too bad for them. Yes, the transportation and stuff like that could have been tough, but we figured out a way to get there and were able to do it by planning. I can't feel too sorry for those people who didn't plan and just expected to show up. 1.9 million people is a *lot* of traffic.
"I loved Rev Lowery's benediction - but it appeared on TV that most of the crowd on the mall had already stampeded toward the exits"
That's because of how the proceedings were shown on the TVs. After Obama's speech, the camera pulled back to show the whole stairs and everyone kinda stood there for a second, and then started moving toward the exit thinking that it was over. A moment later, when Rev Lowery started speaking, everyone paused to watch again, although I'm sure that the start of the crowd hadn't even realized it, so they kept going.
"but there was next to no crowd energy picked up during the Obama speech - very subdued & off-putting imho"
It's the problem of putting the most subdued members of the audience near the front. We noticed that in the ticketed sections, before the inauguration they were just playing soft strings music, while the back of the mall got the concert from Saturday played on it. A group of us discussed and figured that because we were ticketed, we were supposed to be the "more mature" group of people.
It showed poorly on TV, as the crowd got more crazy the back further it went. It seems that the sections behind ours were all given flags to wave, and they got the music to sing along with before the ceremony started. We just sorta got to stand there and talk, which was good too, but would have shown as more subdued because of that.
Having said that, during his speech there were a number of cheers that went up throughout it in our section that were nice and loud, and after watching it on TV they didn't pick up *any* of that crowd noise except for on a couple stations that only covered it briefly (like Bush's introduction on MSNBC where he got booed and serenaded with Goodbye and Hit the Road Jack, but the TV stations didn't pick it up in the 'normal' coverage).
"maybe it was the many hours waiting in the January cold for all except the usual VIPs up front who as usual are more equal than others with their heaters & special access..."
Although I hate to say this, it makes sense. Each person gets so many tickets to give out, and they have to figure out who to give them too. Since the Representatives are powerful people that have powerful friends, those people are the ones most likely to get the best seats. Having said that, I have no relationship with my Senator other than liking the NBA team he owns, and we got tickets.
"I think he looked & sounded overly somber & scolding ['childish'] - not optimistic or hopeful enough for the times"
And this is where I *really* liked the speech today. So many of his most famous speeches were about getting people to rally around a theme, but they never struck a chord with me because they didn't have much in the way of content. This was a very content driven speech that laid out some of his plans, as well as his statements on his positions the best way that I personally think that he has to date. I came away from it knowing that some of the stuff that was appalling about the last 8 years, like torture, were going away while he wasn't just going to roll over to anyone.
It wasn't the 'Red State / Blue State' speech that was awe inspiring because of its message and great hook. It was an incredible laying out of his policies for the next four years. I was probably one of the lesser Obama fans before this weekend, and the speech totally took away the doubts that I had about him.
"not a great example was set by endless $$$ spent on ceremony & galas tonight when you are calling for sacrifice"
The campaign has said that almost all of the money was spent on security for the event and beefing up the Metro to accommodate the crowds. There were things like Jumbotrons brought in so people could see, but without them it would have been impossible to have any idea what was going on. At least for the inauguration itself, I don't think they spent money on anything frivolous.
Also, I think that the 'cost' of the event is being inflated thanks to the states now trying to "charge back" the extra labor they were using for the event to DC. Maryland and Virginia said they needed to bring in a ton of extra security and overtime to secure their Metro stations and whatnot, but normally in these situations the tax money generated by people staying in their states would be what they would cover it with. Now, everyone is asking for a handout.
"the visual image of Cheney in the wheelchair & Bush being razzed by the asembled crowd as he flew away in disgrace on the helicopter - now THAT was GREAT !!!"
The flying away in the copter was one of the funniest moments for those on the ground which I also don't think was picked up well by TV. When he started coming over the crowd the first time, everyone started waving and yelling things like, "Get out of here!" and whatnot. When he came around the second time, everyone started chanting, "Leave! Leave! Leave! Leave!"
When I've seen that part of the day reported, it said that the crowds waved to him with respect as he flew away. We waved, but it was the most insincere wave I think anyone has done in a long time...
So what's this I hear about Cheney throwing his back out while trying to sneak mountains of paperwork out of the White House and Naval Observatory.
To not get too much attention he rented out a U-Haul and tried to accomplish this on his own, hence the strained back.
@ Mrs B -- "As for Rick Warren, he probably shouldn't have been there at all, but he certainly did not come out of it with an enhanced reputation. The other guy (Lowery?) wowed everyone, on the other hand."
It was interesting to be in the crowd to hear people react to things too. When W was seen, it was booing. When Bill Clinton was seen, it was cheering. The most interesting reactions were Laura Bush (complete silence in our area at least) and Warren, who was greeted by the same complete silence, although with a light smattering of boos. After it, there was silence.
I don't think he did anything well for himself. Lowery at the end got cheers when he came up, as well as a lot of laughter during it and a very loud cheer at the end.
rays242, you have been referred to the authorities. Bye bye.
Statler N Waldorf posted thusly:
"Nate, did you get to throw your shoes at Bush and Cheney on their way out the door?
Try not to miss this time :)"
In case you haven't seen it (most everyone probably has by now):

That was fucking awesome :)
@michael
I only hit him once, but I'm going to have another go..... or six.....
MICHAEL
thanks for the link - that was fun !!!
even though I missed on most of my flings...
the MSM sorta hid the story, but did you see on Sun or Mon that a group of protesters did fling shoes at the Bush WH ???
now that was symbolic - but Cheney in the wheelchair [followed by Bush in the copter] is THE iconic image of the transition of power
Once past editorial nonsense (who cares about a typo or three) and freeper jostling, Mrs. B kindly injects some interest into the discussion, thanks. Also loved the Cheney comments.
Some of you might enjoy this. Extract:
"... a sign that reads "JOBS WON'T FIX AMERICA," which is either a bearish take on the utility of the iPhone, or a warning to the nation that employment is sodomy. Both are probably a little bit true, but, jeez, that's no reason to yell at people."

Thus showing I can waste time with the best of you!
It worries me that Warren's phony affect appears to be invisible to a vast swathe of Americans. Doesn't bode well for us all.
yeah nate, we were on the LAST train that was allowed into l'enfant. we cheered at our luck. but as much as going to pentagon sucked, you should know that the REASON they closed l'enfant (as we soon saw) was that it was 100% solid unmoving humans. it probably took 45 minutes to get from leaving the train to out of the station. yikes!
but what a day. i think i saw you.
Goatdan, that wasn't my experience at all. I can't speak for the conditions on the mall-- I heard it wasn't bad-- but I know that for thousands of ticketholders, the morning was a nightmare. We arrived at 7 and didn't make it in until after 11, and we were fortunate. Friends of ours in some sections who were holding tickets and who had arrived at 3 or 4 a.m. didn't make it in at all. Some checkpoints may have been speedy, but entrances for some color tickets were MUCH slower than others. Some people were even turned away for arriving too early.
I know that people with purple tickets, who had mostly been field organizers, stood in a line about a mile long that wound from 1st and Louisiana down to D St. and down D half a mile into the 3rd St. tunnel. A woman went into labor waiting in line. The people waiting in the tunnel could neither hear nor see anything, and were never let in. Thousands of people who'd worked on the campaign, some of them for two solid years, weren't admitted at all. People traveled across the country for this-- the gates should've opened at 7. There wasn't even space in the standing areas for all of the people who'd been issued tickets.
http://www.myfoxdc.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=8290754&version=8&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1
In addition, many of the police officers in the vicinity who were from other cities didn't receive information about where the entrances were, or even relative geography (through no fault of their own-- it was just poor planning). DC transit workers and police were quite helpful, but they were few in comparison with the legions of police brought in from outside, who apparently weren't given anywhere near the kind of information they needed. PIC volunteers were supposed to be omnipresent to answer questions, but I didn't see a single one.
Still, the crowd was incredibly patient and well-behaved. I don't think there was a single arrest or major disturbance. Even though thousands of people waited in 20-degree weather for 8 to 10 hours to see nothing at all, they kept their disappointment pretty private and very peaceable.
wv: prondable. I don't know what it means, but it damn well ought to be a word!

Pron = shorthand for pronunciation, so prondable would by extension be a word that can be pronunicated
