If the news is true that Caroline Kennedy has withdrawn her bid for the Senate, then one of two things has happened. The first possibility is that David Paterson decided some days ago to go with another candidate, and gave Kennedy the opportunity to save face by withdrawing her name from consideration. You know: the old "You Can't Fire Me! I Quit!" shtick.
The second possibility, not entirely mutually exclusive with the first, is that Kennedy was just not all that into being a senator in the first place.
The sequence of events is fairly easy to imagine:
1. Barack Obama, somewhat unexpectedly, taps Hillary Clinton to be his Secretary of State, creating a Senate vacancy in your home state.
2. Having gained some notoriety because of your role on Barack Obama's campaign -- not that you needed much notoriety, since you're a Kennedy -- you start to hear your name tossed about by the press and by some of your associates, all of whom are behaving with the best of intentions.
2a. Also, your uncle, one of the most famous senators in history but also someone who is gravely ill, encourages/hints/urges you to take the seat.
2b. Deep down, however, you're conflicted. Your relatively public role on behalf of the Obama campaign went better than you thought -- maybe you don't mind the limelight so much, being so overtly involved in electoral politics. But you're also fundamentally a fairly private person, a free spirit, and the idea of becoming a senator feels constricting. Everyone seems to want this for you more than you want it for yourself.
3. Well, maybe not everyone. New York is a very big state with a lot of very famous Democrats, and some of them want the seat instead. So if you want the seat, you're certainly going to have to look like you want it, whether you actually want it or not.
4. And so, you embark on a media campaign and "officially" declare your interest, finding your powerful family and their powerful friends all too eager to help out. But when you're actually put on the spot, you come across as nervous, indifferent, and underprepared -- perhaps because you are nervous, indifferent, and underprepared. Your public image takes a hit. Some powerful figures in the media begin to criticize you, mocking everything from your resume to your speech patterns. You have even less privacy than you're used to. This is exactly what you were afraid of in the first place.
5. But you're also kind of stuck. A lot of people -- the Mayor, maybe the Clintons, and certainly your uncle -- have gone out on a limb for you. You could probably have the seat if you really wanted it. But you've never been entirely sure that you really want it. In fact, you're not sure that you want it at all.
5a. You sort of schlep your way through your remaining media hits. Deep down, perhaps, you're trying to sabotage your candidacy.
6. Finally, something breaks. Paterson lets you know that he's leaning in a different direction. Or, one of your best friends sits down and has a real heart-to-heart with you. Or, you summon the courage to let your uncle know that you don't really want the position. In any event, you withdraw your name from consideration. And you haven't felt better in months.

That last name is starting to become a curse.
Starting?
Could Ted Kennedy's recent incident and ongoing health concerns be a factor? You know, wanting to spend more time with him, etc. At the very least, perhaps it might be an excuse if she needs to give one?
It's really hard to read her since she's really shied away from the press during her lifetime. You would think if she were serious she would have seemed a bit more prepared and came out of the gate at full speed.
But like I said, I can't read her at all.
On a side note, did everyone see the explosive information on Countdown from the ex-NSA guy saying the NSA targeted news organizations with 24/7 monitoring 365 days a year. Not only that, they monitored everyone and not just calls originating from overseas as previously thought.
Talk about being on the brink of fascism.
So much for life, LIBERTY and the pursuit of happiness.
Latest word I heard is that the story is being denied.
I say - more power to her either way. If her heart wasn't in it New York state would suffer.
There are and have been very good prospects.
I have to force mtself to engage in my state (NM) and not much goes on here.
Good piece just the same.
@Archaeopteryx: do you mean really denied, or did they say the story was "ridiculous" (or "absurd" or "laughable" etc.)? "Ridiculous", of course, is code-speak for "true" (as in, "any accusation that we played any part in overthrowing the government of Badistan is ridiculous").
And there's a conficting report that she still wants it. Is this now a rumor site? Or are we going to talk about politics?
If I wanted rumors I'd go to Drudge. I don't.
Please don't cheapen the site.
Now they're reporting that Caroline Kennedy has not backed out after all. Guess we'll see what we see.
The NSA issue looks like a story that could blow up in a hurry. If you're a journo of any consequence, they spied on you. And every journalist in the land knows that it's safe to focus on the story since the people who might have retaliated if you wrote up the issue are now gone.
Let the feeding frenzy begin, I say. Let the ink-stained wretches of America spend at least the next four years uncovering the sins of the Bush regime and reminding America why they were so bad, so wicked, so dictatorial, so undeserving to lead a free people.
We have two members of our caucus who have had brian surgery, her uncle shows up to vote with a brain tumor and her official statement is she can't serve because of a sick relative?
CNN.com still says she is out.
The NY Times is reporting that Paterson will announce his pick on Friday or Saturday. As Clinton has already yielded her seat, the delay seems to say that CK 's withdrawal is for real and Paterson unexpectedly must pick somebody else.
OTOH,the excuse that her uncle's illness is behind her withdrawal makes no sense at all.A "withdrawal" can only mean that it's a face-saving gesture as Nate said.
Something's not right here.
Maybe so. Had Ms Kennedy attained a degree of political experience at the state or local level or in some cabinet position prior to this, it would have been easier to see her as a serious candidate. As it was, it looked a little too much like we were looking to her simply because she was a Kennedy, which ultimately played heavily against her.
Cuomo also has a famous last name, and he also has his experience as DA to speak of what he is personally like as an elected official. While not long, his resumé is longer than Ms Kennedy's.
Ms Gillibrand, while more conservative than I like, has shown a remarkable amount of political savvy, winning her Congressional seat as a write-in candidate and surviving two years in that post with rising popularity. She has also managed to assist other outsiders who have no family name or inherited wealth to run on, like Mike Russo, to launch startlingly successful campaigns. There is a certain harm that comes with having won because of political skill as opposed to inherited inevitability.
The other candidates also have their appeal based upon their records as local politicians and one as a State Senator. In each case, we can look at their records to see how they perform in the bloodsport of politics.
Ms Kennedy is a wonderful person, who endorses a platform very much in line with my own. It was difficult to say anything against her. At the same time, we are not a monarchy, and our officials are not landed gentry that merely inherit their titles with no effort made on their own part. This country was founded on the idea that merit, not lineage, is the determining factor in one's success.
I am glad that she expressed the maturity she did when she withdrew her application. It would have been very difficult to see her turned down, no matter how principled David Paterson would be in doing so.
The analysis is incomplete because it leaves out Bloomberg. CK was a wholly owned subsidiary of Mayor Bloomberg from day 1 - it was his idea, his staff, his money and his influence. CK was an attempt to create a US Senator beholden to no one but Bloomberg.
But as we all know a Senator is a valuable thing and you don't just give it away. If Paterson can't sell the seat for cash he can at least get something for it - namely, neutralize a rival. By naming Cuomo, his most formidable rival, he maximizes his return.
For Bloomberg's CK play to work they had to move swiftly, use her celebrity would create a groundswell, and force Paterson's to give them the seat 'for free'. They couldn't do it.
Interesting theory...
In this case, she should have said that "No means no!" A little surprising if she really didn't find the strength to do that. Well, she really was a private person before that.
I think there might be a bit of this but I think option A is still the main thing.
Patterson told her she wasn't getting it and gave her the option to "resign".
I have to say I think its a good thing. If we learned anything over the last 8 years, it was the stupidity of handing a high profile job to somebody based largely on their last name.
I didn't think Caroline Kennedy was ready to be Senator. Not to say that she couldn't rise to the task but she wasn't ready yet. If she really has an interest in politics, she should run for state assembly or city council. If she likes it and does a good job, she can always run for higher office later.
I'd also point out that Sarah Palin's criticism was grade A bulls__t. Caroline Kennedy is the perfect example that the media is ready to critize an unprepared Democrat just as much as an unprepared Republican. Kennedy took a lot of heat. That is the way it should be for both Dems and Reps. The media does need to test people and prove that they are ready for office.
Assuming CK is out,I sure hope Cuomo doesn't get the job.Although talented,he is arrogant and extremely full of himself. He doesn't't work well his peers and would not fit in well in a collegial setting like the Senate.
If it is true that she has withdrawn, I would actually be disappointed. Carolyn Kennedy has her heart in the right place. She may be shy but she will be a quick study. If she gets appointed and/or runs for the senate in 2012, she will definitely inherit the people behind her uncle Ted. Ted Kennedy and his staff has an encyclopedic knowledge of issues and experience in cases of Labor Unions , Health Care reforms and Education programs that would benefit most of the poor and underprivileged.
Everything about Sarah Palin is bullsh!t, and it's not grade A either.
Stat-
Cuomo is Attorney General of NY,not a DA.He previosly served in Clinton's cabinet as HUD Secretary.
I think that this is probably a very close summation of events...
Are we going to get an update with the denials from the Kennedy camp? I'm not ready to speculate about this until we hear something definitive.
Is this our "Dewey Beats Truman?"
dbrodbeck said...
CNN.com still says she is out.
So you think CNN is 'god of news'?
Sorry to say, once Ted Turner left, and when CNN started to look more and more like Faux News is the point I stopped looking to CNN to report facts, but rather any and all rumors that would hurt any politicians except the neo-cons. That type of reporting permeates their 'reporting' to this day.
David Gregory just appeared on Rachel Maddow's show saying Kennedy hasn't withdrawn. FWIW.
imho, fuck you nate. Stop rubbing it in. Nothing personal. But i feel like i've been stabbed in the back. And it's the wrong time to be engaging in a 7-step traffic-inducing rant about how much she may not have wanted it. you got nothing.
If she withdrew her name, then it's either because she wasn't going to be selected or there's dirt on her that she knows would come out. I don't believe the notion that after a month or so of campaigning for the job and on the eve of being selected, she all the sudden found her voice and decided that she just didn't want to be senator. That's just not credible.
@Mike, no I do not think it is the god of news.... Indeed, I rarely use the word god...
I was just reporting what they had updated moments earlier. Sorry if I somehow offended you.
With all due respect, Caroline Kennedy couldn't carry Kirsten Gillibrand's hand bag. Gillibrand beat a three time incumbent against all odds, and just last November stymied a guy who spent $5 mil of his own dough to beat her.
She's polished, smart (Dartmouth BA / UCLA JD), and knows the game.
We'd hate to lose her here in the NY 20th, but that's politics.
Lupercal, who are you, and why do you feel like YOU've been stabbed in the back?
When I first heard of it, and the reason she gave (to spend time with Uncle Teddy) I thought she withdrew her name now, and for that reason, so that she could have her Uncle's seat (which was JFK's seat before him) once Teddy dies/resigns. I still believe that...
I appreciate the sentiment of your argument here -- as I understand it you are saying that she is simply a human caught in a situation that very few others would ever be able to relate to and her actions are made up of a series of extremely sympathetic small steps.
However, I think you gloss over point 2 a little quickly. I think the general complaining, that this post seems to be a response to, is not simply directed at Ms Kennedy (though it is very easy for her to personify the issue) but rather at the whole crowd who were seriously discussing her as a candidate; though as you point out it is very possible that the crowd started talking about it before she had any interest in the position.
Although this crowd may have been behaving with the best of intentions, what people (I) fear is that they weren't behaving with the best of sense. I believe there is a growing concern among some, myself included, that it is becoming very easy for some people to confuse celebrity with legitimacy, and many of these people have voices in the press.
So while it probably wasn't Ms. Kennedy's fault that the general understanding became that she could have the senate seat if wanted it, there is a real question of how we got there if it wasn't for her.
Huh. So Caroline Kennedy was an inexperienced Democrat who wasn't prepared for the office. So of course, there's a post that goes out of its way to try to make a wealth of excuses for her and make us sympathize with her.
But I'm sure you could of cared less about giving any respect to Sarah Palin and derided her as unfairly as otheres derided Caroline Kennedy. I doubt Paln got any your sympathy though.
Which is fine. Our PSCI Professor told us to follow your website, but made it pretty clear that it was going to be pretty biased. Ah well...
Dave, she's just not that into you.
The problem I have with this article by Nate is in the very first words:
"If the news is true that Caroline Kennedy has withdrawn her bid for the Senate, . . . ."
If
Nate gave absolutely NO consideration to the possibility that the reports are not true.
Also, if the reports are not true (or were not true at the time they were being spread by various new media), it could be that the reports caused events to make them true. After all, if the reports were not true, what kind of cloud would CK have over her head if she had been named to the Senate seat, and thus she withdrew her name from consideration (if some of the current reports are true).
The initial reports were stating 'unnamed source' or 'unnamed sources'. That unnamed source or sources could have been speaking to several news organizations, spreading a (at that time) false rumor, with the news media not realizing that their unnamed source(s) was not unique, but the same as all the other media was reporting as an unnamed source(s), thus a self-fulfilling rumor was started, i.e., a withdrawal of the candidate. However, the reason for the withdrawal was not as stated in the rumor, but the result OF the rumor in the first place.
If true, she probably came to realize their was more to the job than just getting the gov to anoint you. Despite her proximity to prominent candidates, it's different when it's your but in the seat.
But now we can get real -- a real New Yorker for the seat,
LOU REED for NY SENATOR!
-- born in Brooklyn & raised "upstate." He knows foreign policy (e.g., Berlin album); he knows crime (e.g., ex-junkie).
Self-employed like Joe-the-Plumber, too!
http://loomisnews.wordpress.com/2009/01/16/lou-reed-for-new-york-senate/
If the story is true, then at least Caroline Kennedy figured out that she was inexperienced and unprepared. Sarah Palin still hasn't figured that out about herself, and is probably still furious that no one is impressed by her foreign policy experience.
A simplified version of Nate's explanation: Kennedy got a little firsthand experience with the day-to-day slugfest that is political life, and decided that remaining a wise, lofty observer whose words are always respected was a better gig for her. Fair enough, and good for her - if true.
Or, or, or...
Or this is all speculative stuff that was pulled out of the arse. Let's just wait and see how this all plays out. Your guess is as good as mine, but it's still only a guess.
I'm hoping for someone other than Cuomo now (perhaps Valasquez)...
Session In Order: Inside the Texas Legislature
A third option: this was a concerted and narrowly-held leak to flush Paterson out now w/ a decision, on the day Clinton's resignation was effective, to pre-empt a post-resignation period of media frenzy and political jostling, to make it look like Paterson had to convince her to take the seat, in order to reduce the unmerited-gift appearance, and to confirm his interest in appointing her, yea or nay. Nobody's talking, which means they're in some kind of stand-off. My bet is that Paterson is fighting it but if he wants her he'll have to cave. We'll see soon enough.
I second that motion;
SENATOR LOU REED OF NEW YORK
C'Mon, he inspired Vaclav Havel for fuck's sake. If you appoint him, the Czechs will love us forever. And since government is all about Czechs and Balances, he's the man you need.
I'm waiting for my man.
And speaking of Senators,
Coleman's being a dick
speaking of sweet Caroline...
whatever became of Macaroni & Pushinka from her WH days ?
and why are the Obama girls gaga over the Jonas Bros ?
a scavenger hunt ending in a private 'surprise' concert in the WH for Sasha & Malia & 50 of their newest BFFs while mom & dad were dashing in-out of 10 galas...
don't spoil 'em so much & so fast or instead of a pound puppy they will want 101 dalmations...
CAROLINE ANNOUNCES HER WITHDRAWAL!!!
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/22/nyregion/22caroline.html?hp
And on the other hand, as we see, it looks like Paterson forced her out. Great, just great. I love nearly everything about New York.
And on the other hand, as we see, it looks like Paterson forced her out.
How do you figure that?
I tend to think she thought she was a shoo in and when it didn't turn out that way, she decided to back out. And I have to add.......her bid for this position has to be one of the worst rollouts in some time. It was so clumsily done you would not know her family had been in politics for the last 100 years.
If she has in fact taken herself out of the race, this can only increase my chances!
Gov. Paterson, I await your phone call.
TED
well, you know that Caroline, you know, is a Kennedy... so, you know, I guess that she could/shoulda/woulda. you know, been a fine senator if only, you know, Patterson gave her a chance
actually I think she would have been just fine at least as a 2 year placeholder [just like Burris & Kaufman]
but skip Andrew Cuomo too & put in Mario for a real qualified placeholder
maybe Bloomberg was also behind this PR effort to first promote the hell out of her then now scuttle Caroline to keep the seat in play for 2010 ?
Governor Paterson has handled this whole process with total ineptitude. He has dawdled over the selection for over a month and now needs until at least Monday to pick somebody.Pathetic!
He'll easily win this year's Harry Reid Award.
OPUS
agreed. Patterson is doing worse in managing this selection than Blago did !!! He has been too coy by half imho, and now it is blowing up into another prolonged & unnecessary distraction
I think she threw her hat in the ring for a little publicity, and some free polling to see how the public sees her as a political figure.
She is bowing out(hopefully) because she learned that this is the wrong way to enter politics.
I don't think it is any more complicated than testing the waters without having to form a committee and raise money, and deal with all of those headaches,
DCM-
I don't see Bloomberg having the personality to be just a cog (Senator) in a wheel (the Senate). He founded and ran (still runs?) a multi-billion dollar company and runs one of the largest cities in the world.
I'm sure he wouldn't be happy being anything but the top dog of an enterprise. He'd much rather be Governor of New York,or better still, the first Jewish President.
I think we are jumping the gun on this story and also on the Bowers story. Too much rumor, not enough fact.
OPUS
I agree about Bloomberg & the senate not being a good fit
my comment on keeping it in play was that it might fit into his 'schemes' to get into Patterson's head in this affair by first promoting Kennedy hard to 'use' her [which he did, correct ?]
then setting up this farce tonight & making Paterson look the fool & making it difficult for both Cuomo & Paterson to look good no matter how this turns out
but triangulate both of these NY state pols through this gamesmanship to weaken them both [or remove one or the other entirely] to help clear his way to Albany in 2010
now that sounds like Mike to me
Apparently, we know have a statement released by Kennedy herself saying she was withdrawing.
I would echo the comments regarding Governor Patterson. The proper way to do this was the way that Colorado did it.
As anyone who has ever had to go through a long process to get a job or appointment knows, there is a point somewhere in the process when you question why you are putting up with all the b.s. with no end in sight. That doesn't mean that you aren't interested or don't want the position, but you ask whether it is worth the effort with no guarantee that you are going to get the brass ring in the end.
Alex S. said... "In this case, she should have said that "No means no!" "
Probably what she said was, "Uh, governor Paterson? You know, I'm just calling to say, you know, I've been thinking, and um, I'm not totally sure whether I should, you know, or not, but, you know, on the other hand..."
@Michael: presumably Lupercal = MuleRider = rays
OPUS
Paterson should appoint BLOOMBERG !
everyone knows he would hate being a junior senator under Shumer no less !
make him take the job or turn it down publicly
IF Mike turns the job down when offered, he would come off as a schmuck & could kiss his shot at Albany bye bye
THEN appoint Andrew Cuome [as second or even third choice after Kennedy & Bloomberg]
that would remove his competition in one fell swoop
now that would be good clean political fun for all
Now I understand what it takes to become a good poker player and why Nate has become one of our most insightful and amusing commentators.
OPUS
again I agree. the whole party turncoat thing for Bloomberg is just part of the FUN !!!
why ol' Norm Coleman did the same thing in MN by switching parties for his political opportunity
so to take the senate seat Bloomie would have to I suppose come back out as a DEM or maybe he could join Bernie & Joe as a senate IND caucusing with the DEMs
heck, let him caucus with the GOPers in the Senate - they deserve him there !!!
good times for all - and then make him stand for election in NY in 2010
hehe - I love the idea, and the DEMs do not need the caucus vote but he would probably join them since he craves access to realpower, right ?
DCM
Sounds good to me.We could use a little fun after suffering through the Burris and Franken torment!
But seriosly,Bloomberg has a problem running for Governor of NY.
He was a registered Democrat but turned Republican to run for Mayor of New York. After being re-elcted in 2005,he left the Republican Party and declared himself an Independent! Quite the little turncoat is Mr.Bloomberg.
During 2008's primary season,Bloomberg was evaluating running for the Presidency as a self-financed Independent.(Yes,he could afford it.) Obama's rise made that impractical.
I'm not sure what he would run as in a NY gubernatorial race.Regardless, charges of being a turncoat and rich opportunist would abound.
But it would be interesting.I might even move back to NY to become part of it.
I will never understand what it is that makes people think there is some magical quality that you must obtain to be a senator. Caroline has graduated from law school. Senators make laws. Sounds to me she has all the knowledge she needs. Why do we always have to run people through political machines in order to make the "fit" to be a candidate for X. I don't know enough about Caroline, but always heard she was a fairly smart person. isn't that what we really need in Congress some smart peopel and if they aren't part of a political machine so much the better. All, I can say is I come away from this article with the feeling this is just more more Kennedy bashing. This poor family has suffered greatly at the hands of their fellow Americans. Hell, if I was a member of this family, I'd run as fast as I could away from this country.
Oh yeah,he's addicted to power all right.
After supporting NYC term limits,he changed his mind. Why? Because his second (and last) term ends this year which meant he would be OUT OF POWER this November with nothing to do until 2010-2011 when he could run for something. So he applied pressure to the City Council and, completely disregarding 2 referenda by the electorate, had the term limit law changed, from a 2 term to a 3 term limit.
How I'd love it if he lost the mayoral election this November!
OPUS
but Giuliani vs Bloomberg for NY Gov in 2010 would be entertaining as well
@livemild
sorry I missed you in the last thread. You asked if I had just had a birthday? No - but why did you want to know?
@ celtic_hackr
I too have never bought the "experience" factor for being a senator. Or mayor, congressman, governor, etc. Intelligence is paramount.
I am also surprised by the Caroline Kennedy bashing. But it wasn't Kennedy bashing in general but bashing only of Caroline. Many second generation Kennedys have run for and held elected office, particularly in Massachusetts.Poor Caroline stumbled in her first public appearances and that did her in.
I still don't know for sure why she withdrew. And if Paterson wasn't going to pick her,I wish she would have stood her ground and made Paterson reject her rather than giving up.
DCM
Amazing! I was going to drag Giuliani into it but ran out of time. (I'm a slow one-fingered typist who's compulsive about spelling, grammar and punctuation.)
I dislike Mike but I detest Rudy,so I'd like to see that contest and see Rudy destroyed once and for all.
I know someone who is happier than George Bush is right now after leaving all that mess to Obama ...
and that person is Caroline Kennedy ...
That one month senate bid stint must have been a bitch for someone as reserved as she is ...
There is no doubt she will continue to be an asset to New York without her being officially in Government ...
Battling headlines:
First the NY Times rumor from an unnamed source that gets all the headlines, and brings out all the Caroline Kennedy bashing, then we get this headline:
Caroline Kennedy renews bid for Senate
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/nation/bal-te.briefs220jan22,0,4715200.story
There is no byline, and there is no credit to whether it is a Baltimore Sun, AP or other source, but the date of the article is January 22, 2009.
As I stated earlier, the original entry by Nate started out with the word 'If', but then he only presented one side. When you have an 'if', there is at least one (or more) other possibilities.
I think it may have been family pressure more than anything. Maybe not even direct family pressure. It's been the family business and when Teddy dies, the Kennedys are out of politics. Arnold doesn't count.
The BBC confirms that Miss Kennedy has withdrawn.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7843951.stm
And there's a statement:
"I informed Governor Paterson today that for personal reasons I am withdrawing my name from consideration for the United States Senate," said Mrs Kennedy in a statement issued by her spokesperson.
So, I think that Nate was right after all.
@ daybreaq
when Teddy dies, the Kennedys are out of politics.
Wrong! Patrick Kennedy,41,Teddy's son,is a Congressman from Rhode Island.
STepper proves himself to be an idiot. The New York Times, MSNBC, NBC, and lots of reputable new agencies went with this before Nate. Go find a fact before you make yourself look stupid.
It looks to me like Patterson was going a different direction and let her know to withdraw instead of being embarrassed. A face saving move.
Bloomberg would be the real wildcard, and a great appointment. A good mind for business is what the Seante needs right now.
I'm not sure this is the best (or even close) use of your talents. I really, really enjoyed your blog during the pre-election cycle. Where are the polls to back up your assertions/speculations? Why not just let her be instead of becoming a gossip blog? Surely there's something else to write about than what MIGHT be going on in her heart and head. I thought you were about the numbers.
Nate, this is a nice reading of what we have seen unfold. It certainly fits. Thank you.
DCM in FL said...
"Patterson is doing worse in managing this selection than Blago did !!!"
Are you serious? When I see more than one exclamation point after a statement, I sometimes think that someone may have been going for intentional hyperbole, because the notion that a governor who won't be going to prison for managing one of his duties somehow did it worse than another governor who (based on the current evidence) will be going to prison as the result of managing the same duties is, well...stupid.
I find some of the commenter indignance in this thread to be morbidly funny. There are people - longtime posters, to be sure - who need to take a few deep breaths and repeat the phrase "This is the nature of political commentary" until it sticks. There is nothing wrong with taking / considering / investigating / opining on one side of an issue, and I happen to think that Nate does a very insightful job at doing it.
If the reports had turned out not to have been true...then things would have been status quo ante, unless of course, you believe that commentary by some guy that Caroline Kennedy probably couldn't pick out of a line-up would force her hand.
(No offense Nate - I love you.)
Some of you may have seen that big to-do on Tuesday. The election is over, and has been for some time. Before getting all gaga about boxing Nate in to "what he does best," you could at least suffer through some discussion of the various results, repercussions, one-offs, and unintended consequences of that election.
Don't worry - 2010, and 2012 will be here soon enough...just ask Randall Munroe.
http://www.xkcd.com/500/
Well, the only people more ecstatic about Caroline Kennedy dropping out, apart from Peter King and Kos, are the FReeptards. These morons have been insanely paranoid for weeks about "Princess Caroline" destroying Mooseburger's presidential chances in 2016. Incrdibly, they actually think their most beloved blithering idiot is running in 2012 and 2016. Forget the fact she was the biggest drag on presidential ticket in GOP history, they're still convinced she'll win by a landslide against President Obama. Just not Caroline Kennedy.
Personally, I reckon Kennedy would have made an exellenet senator, but in terms of PR, she let herself down. The only other option was Andrew Cuomo and he should be the favorite to replace Hillary. Kirsten Gillibrand would be a bad appointment. She's conservative and the Dems would likely lose her district.
Close one there.
After rejecting a Clinton Dynasty, and waving good bye to the Bush Dynasty (well there is still Jebb. The one who wasn't quite dumb enough to be a Republican Presodent), a Kennedy resugence might have been bad form.
No, not just another Kennedy Senator, a Kennedy President. Obama as an adopted Kennedy would look all too plausable. It was mooted during the primaries.
If Caroline had been parachuted into the position ahead of politicians who sweated to earned the chance, who could easily refute the idea that the fix was in? Obama looking out for his sister?
Lets face it. Kennedy cospiracy theories have allways been popular.
To give you an idea of just how paranoid and full of hate the wingnuts were about Caroline Kennedy being appointed to fill Hillary's seat, the hatred directed at Al Franken was nothing compared to what they launched at her. It was actually quite shocking. One minute wingnuts couldn't give a shit about her, the next she was the most despised woman in FReeptard USA.
Well, I think it's a shame. It would have been nice for us to get a Senator who *wasn't* a sleazy political hack.
Wow, now this is INTWERESTING at a whole bunch of levels:
"Cheney Pressed for Libby Pardon
Noting a sharp disagreement with his former boss, former Vice President Dick Cheney told the Weekly Standard that his former chief of staff, Scooter Libby, deserved a presidential pardon.
Said Cheney: "Scooter Libby is one of the most capable and honorable men I've ever known. He's been an outstanding public servant throughout his career. He was the victim of a serious miscarriage of justice, and I strongly believe that he deserved a presidential pardon. Obviously, I disagree with President Bush's decision."
In addition to this issue, Cheney said he disagreed with Bush just four other times: On a gay marriage ban; on firing Donald Rumsfeld; on Washington, D.C.'s gun ban; and on North Korea. "

If I were Governor Paterson, I would want to send a signal to the press that they shouldn't try to predict his decisions. Best way to do that?
Appoint Rod Blagojevich to be the Senator for New York!
If nothing else, Harry Reid would go into a apoplectic fit.
...talking about nepotism, there's always *BILL* Clinton .......
There are a lot of reasons flying around as to WHY she's declared, but I think it's a good move (for both her and NY) that she's not the chosen one to fill the NY Senate seat. It would mar Obama's aura of working one's way up to the ladder of success...and as the post implies, she would probably go crazy with the new limelight.
The media vastly over-over-estimates the amount of affection people of NY have for the Kennedy family. Baby Boomer nostalgia for Camelot is irritating. Her "inevitable, because I am a Kennedy" strategy just didn't work, and probably raised people's hackles.
Princess Caroline just got a strong taste of the nasty rough and tumble of politics, and she ran. She should stick to the private section, I'm sure she can do more good there.
I hate political dynasties and royal families. It's one reason I preferred Obama to Clinton.
Paul, I do agree. Political dynasties smack too much of the inherited titles of the aristocratic families of Old Europe, which we broke away from. The Dream of America is one where anyone stands an equal chance of success, bolstered not by primogeniture or wealth, but by merit alone. For us to promote someone to the rank of Senator on no basis at all other than family name is an obscenity.
Caroline Kennedy is a wonderful person. She and I share many common core values. However, she is like myself in that neither of us have any political experience at all. Neither one of us is qualified for the job, and while it would shock most everyone here if Paterson were to appoint me (especially since I haven't asked to be considered-I myself would probably collapse from a heart attack), it seemed almost natural for many to assume that Mz Kennedy should ascend to that role. The only difference between us is our names. Hers is a political dynasty, and I'd be rather surprised if most of you could even pronounce mine, let alone recognize it as famous.
Mz Kennedy would have hated the role anyway. that line of work affords one zero privacy, and the media are merciless (as they must be) to elected representatives. Politics at the federal level is a bloodsport, and even your closest allies will, if told they can benefit personally from walking over you, step on your throat to see if that would benefit them more. Mz Kennedy has a kind heart, and prefers to do things privately without alot of fanfare. I doubt she would ever destroy an opponent in the Senate, even if her political survival depended on it.
Andrew Cuomo is, however, quite adept at political survival. He has displayed a certain degree of integrity, such as when he stood up to Elliot Spitzer during that brief administration. At the time, the Governor was arguably the most powerful and popular figure in Albany, and a member of Cuomo's own party. At the time, Joe Bruno, the political boss of Upstate New York's GOP, was the man most reviled by Democrats (with good reason). The clash between Bruno and Spitzer would have presented most of us with a clear choice as to which side to line up on. Cuomo refused to treat it as if it were a football competition, and rather chose to do what he believed was the more ethical thing. While Spitzer would later implode spectacularly as Client Number 9, at the time Cuomo made this decision, Spitzer was the man most likely to succeed Obama as the next Presidential nominee for the Democrats in 2016.
To take a stand against the opposite party of your own, particularly a reprehensible figure like Bruno was the easy thing to do. To stand up to the most powerful force within his own party, a man widely seen as angelic at the time, would have been the most difficult decision Cuomo could have made.
And he chose ethics over political expediency.
That's what we can expect from Senator Cuomo of New York. He has the nerve that few of us possess, including myself.
Notoriety=notorious. You mean notability.
i take serious issue with being compared to mulerider.
Nate,
I'm really surprised that so few people thought you were even partially correct. I thought you were spot on (or at least highly probable [;-)]).
Posting in the relevant thread, but...I think 538 favorite Kristen Gillibrand is going to get the seat.
Now can we PLEASE stop qualifying/disqualifying people based on what their last name is? Thanks.
isn't it spelled "schtick"?
According to Keith Olbermann,Paterson will announce that he's picked Gallibrand tomorrow (Friday).
