Obama Approval Ratings Not Dented by Blagojevich Scandal

With Rod Blagojevich facing the triple threats of impeachment, court-ordered removal from office, and a federal indictment, the tribulations of the Illinois Governor may yet prove to have an effect on Barack Obama's approval ratings -- but the early signs are that Blago will have no tangible impact on the public's perception of the President-elect.

Indeed, with essentially three full days of interviewing having been conducted after Blagojevich's arrest on on Tuesday morning, Obama's approval ratings remain pristine. Gallup shows that 72 percent of the public has a favorable view of Obama, and 18 percent an unfavorable view. The 72 percent favorability rating matches the 72 percent score that Obama achieved on November 7th-9th for the highest since the election, whereas the 18 percent disapproval rating is Obama's lowest yet. Three days ago, before Blagojevich's arrest, those ratings were 70 percent and 21 percent, respectively.

Rasmussen, likewise, sees no change to Obama's approval ratings. 67 percent of their voters now approve of Obama's performance, and 31 percent disapprove, exactly matching Obama's ratings from three days prior, and within a percentage point of his peak totals.

What happened to the reports on the day of Blagojevich's arrest that it may have been Obama's trasition team that tipped off the FBI to start the wire taps? It would make sense and end any Right Wing speculations that Obama was really involved. It seems strange that those reports stopped after the day of the arrest.

Look, these things take time. Even with today's media, things take time to be revealed.

The President Elect's chief of staff, Rahmmy, will be asked to step down when the pressure mounts. As most of you know, he had numerous discussions with Blago that have been captured by the prosecutor.

And, above all else, Obama knows how to throw people under the bus as evidenced by Rev. Wright, Ayers and his wife Michelle (when she was pulled from the campaign)

BostonKid said...

As I seem to never get an answer to, I'll ask here to, why should this have an effect? With everything else going on, I find it appalling the media has spent so much time on Obama's roll in this...If this was anyone else, do we think that it would hurt someone who the culprits are on tape insulting that person for not being willing to play along??? It's sad that so many on line think this is worth more than a passing sec of time...

Yeah all you sucka DJ's. That was my first first.

Not to be a concern troll, but I do kinda worry about Rahm's involvement in the Blagoshere. What will Fitzgerald do if there were some recorded calls from Rahm where Blago was pitching his twisted ideas? The ranting has already begun from the Obama baby eating conspiracists about how this administration is dirtier than Watergate.

BostonKid said...

Davy, there are rumors that Rahm is actually the guy who dropped the dime...Which would somewhat jibe with how things have gone thus far. The weirdo Ohatebots can't really think for themselves, so they read these weirdo sites that take 15 steps to go from A to B to try to show some connection to O. The Ohatebots are so consumed with fury, they can't tell there rectum from their elbow. Anyone who thinks Rahm of all people who listen to a guy everyone knew was being watched about something like this is quite silly. Remember, Obama and Rahm are competent enough to "rig" an election in these people's minds but can't wait 3 weeks to sell a senate seat, it's too funny.

Davy, there probably were calls between Rahm and Blago, which would account for how Blago knew that he would get nothing but "appreciation" for appointing Valerie Jarrett to Obama's Senate seat. Fitzpatrick has reiterated that he has no reason to suspect the Obama camp of any wrongdoing, so any recorded conversations between Rahm (or whoever) and Blago are of no significance. The Fox News crowd can have as much fun with this as they want, but it just ain't going anywhere.

I have happily come the the conclusion that Obama is quite like Bill Clinton in that his governing values are a mile wide and about an inch thick. Each is more interested in power and control that a governing philosophy. In general, this is very good for the American people.

Because of this, he can come to an agreement with a soon to be GOP congress on some important issues. Spending will remain in check even if tax rates remain the same.

I will give him credit when he throws the true believers (Kos, wacko enviros, global warming alarmists, uber socialists, homosexuals and radical abortion crowd, all under the bus.

Like Clinton, he will care much more about re-election that creating single payer health care system that sizable majority oppose (See Ras. Polling out today)

What I would like to see is a new Ford motor Company, headquartered in a right to work state, maybe Arizona, that thrives. Yes, it will produce energy efficient cars that are of high quality, but it will also produce gas gusselers if the market desires them. A properly run domestic auto company will swamp the competition.

Davy said...

@BostonKid

Yeah, I guess I can see how Obama camp would want to step lightly regarding this given Fitzgerald's need to make a case. So Rahm's reluctance to immediately go on record with conversations would be justified as evidentiary fidelity.

Thus far, I've seen no evidence that Obama or anyone on his team tipped off Fitzgerald. Indeed, Obama has been trying to emphasize that he had no contact nor knowledge of this. If any of his underlings knew about this, and didn't tell OBAMA before they tipped off prosecuters, that would be pretty irresponsible.

There is also considerable evidence that this investigation predates the election, when Obama would not have been involved anyway.

Though I think Obama and his team will come out unscathed in this one, there is still the possibility that Blago made it clear to Obama's team that he wanted something in exchange, that Obama and co. didn't play along, but they ALSO didn't inform anyone that Blago was apparently playing dirty. The press legitimately will wonder if this is the case, until everything comes to light.

Why don't you face reality and take it like a man?

Although you may now claim that you dislike Bush, the fact is that you got a narrowly elected president who actually tried to enact your ideological agenda.

Result - the wingnut party has nearly been destroyed (arguably already has been as a national party).

The experiment has been done many times now. Completely unregulated or ill-regulated "laissez faire" capitalism is almost as stupid as its mirror image, a centralized command economy.

A framework of free markets and strong human rights, with intelligent regulation for the common good, a social safety net, and a progressive system of taxation is what works.

Americans don't want your egocentric right wing fantasy system.

In fact, they never really did. Bush ran as a "moderate" in 2000 and lost the popular vote, then won by the narrowest margin ever for an incumbent in '04, by exploiting fear and hate.

Compare that to the results of the 2008 election.

Your baseless comments about Obama's character are at best an extreme and tasteless expression of sour grapes.

And in the end, it doesn't matter. It's ludicrous to suggest that an intelligent politician like Obama would have been dumb enough to be involved in this, but even if he had been, people still don't want YOUR guy.

I think the percieved culture of corruption in American politics presents Obama-Holder with an opening to go after the Bush, Cheney, Rove and their buddies. Before, this would have been seen as a partisan political act. But now, after Blagojevich and, presumably Norm Coleman, I think a large majority of the American public would wholeheartedly support such action. In fact, I reckon they'd be ecstatic if the Obama justice department investigate, prosecute and incarcerate members of the Bush regime. Not to mention the corporate crooks.

Obama has made a few references to "where the bodies are buried" at transition press conferences, in particular the unveiling of Tim Geithner and Eric Holder. And the other day Obama suggested cleaning up politics. Well if he's serious about it, here's his chance. It's time to investigate criminal activity inside the Bush White House. Biden promised as much to a voter on the campaign trail.

Shows exactly how uniformed the average troll is.

Obama was never for a single payer universal healthcare plan, and neither was Hillary. In fact, Obama's opposition to a health care mandate was one of the few major differences between him and Hillary Clinton during the primary.

On taxes, Obama has always kept the option open to either repeal or allow to expire Bush's tax cuts. Here is a list of qoutes dating back as far as 2007 confirming this: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/12/9/51424/7856/271/670967

As he has said several times before, Obama's first priorities are the economy, tax cuts, and health care. Here is a link to a CNN interview where he says just that: http://m.cnn.com/cnn/ne/politics/detail/197508/full

The environmental legislation you seem to be so fixated on will come later.

Please read my comment about Jack-be-Nimble 2 comments up from yours, because you seem to suffer from the same inability to seperate your perception from reality that he does.

Alex S. said...

It even seems that Obama gained popularity in the recent weeks. His disapproval rating is down to about 25% in the chart. I am guessing that these 25% are also the people that approve of George Bush so this might be close to Obama's best achievable numbers. Obviously, his cabinet selections have been accepted by the public.

I don't think that there is any possible significant damage for Obama in the whole Blagojevich affair. Low-information voters will remember Blago's expletives against Obama, while high-information voters will understand that an association that is established by chance (locality and party) is not relevant. And the story is over now anyway. At the weekend, the car bailout will be the nr. 1-issue. I guess Rahm Emanuel might feel a risk of having his no-bullshit-with-me image threatened by some discussions with Blagojevich. But well, he couldn't have completely ignored the governor of the state he is a representative of, what do the republicans expect? Should we blame Bobby Jindal for David Vitter's prostitution scandal? I guess they have talked to each other, too - a few times.

ecarlson said...

@ Lucas:

The link you provide contains itself a link claiming those close to Rahm Emanuel denies he had anything to do with the tip off. It seems very unlikely anyone from Obama's team triggered this event. It is conceivable that someone knew something and FAILED to blow the whistle, but it's going to be hard to prove that, and it isn't that damning.

Berkeley Bear in Illinois said...

Couple of points:

No reason for this to taint Obama. He was never close to Blago, Blago cursed him, Fitzgerald (and Fitzpatrick is a totally different (and common in Scots-Irish communities)name, not a nickname for the prosecutor) cleared him.

Rahm has blown his stack, but that's because a jackass of a reporter approached him in front at his kids' recital and others have made his street address a matter of public record - when he hasn't been accused of squat. I'd be upset too - in fact, nothing as polite as what Rahm said would have come out of my mouth.
It appears that members of the Indian-American business community, who were big backers of both Blago and Jesse Jackson, Jr., may have approached Blago about raising money in return for JJ getting the seat. The timing works - Oct. 31 Blago meets with them about a fundraiser, later that day says he'd been approached about pay to play and emissaries for JJ saying they'd raise money, then a fundraiser is actually thrown right before the bust. It's entirely possible they did all this without ever talking to JJ, assuming that he'd want the help.

By a freaky coincidence, when I was in India during an election season many years ago, the prevailing attitude from people I talked to was that the only reason to run for office was to have the power to benefit your family members and trade jobs for favors/cash. I was stunned, which they took as a sign of my American naivete. Not that this was the attitude of the folks in Chi-town, but it was interesting.

Several people here have suggested that Emanuel tipped the FBI to Blago's Senate Seat Sale -- the story having originated with a Chicago reporter Jack Conaty. But Emanuel denies the story. Is there any reason not to believe the denial?

Joe The Fake Virginian said...

@ JMNorris

Inside the beltway, many times a denial about tipping the authorities to a wrongdoing is a fancy way of saying "You are damn right I tipped them off."

It takes time to unravel what really happens in events like Blago's scandal. All that can be said is that people from all sides are spinning away.

sfergus said...

Tipped off could be mean to mean that it was the first the FBI heard about it.

Emanuel could have informed them of Blago's demands, but not have been the first to do so, thus not qualifying as the person who tipped them off.

Oh, for Chrissakes! All of you, take a breath!!

I realize that, since about 1975 everyone feels an urgent need to take any situation, and interpret it as casting the most dramatically negative possible light on the President. There is almost a gleeful frenzy about seeing how one can be the most clever in "taking him down."

But just STOP! All you are doing is pouring more and more poison into the well that is our society.

FIRST: There was, is, and will never be anything criminal or even wrong with the person vacating a senatorial seat (or his/her staff) discussing his/her potential successors with the governor of his state. There wouldn't even be anything wrong with that person (or his/her staff) energetically advocating a particular candidate for the open seat.

SECOND: There was, is and will never be any reason for the person vacating the seat (or his/her staff) to be suspicious of the governor contacting him/her (or his/her staff) to discuss the selection process generally, or any of the potential candidates.

The person vacating the seat, after all, by definition has valuable insight into what characteristics will make a good senator from his/her state.

THIRD: Hell, it wouldn't be that problematic if Blago was contacting the person vacating the seat (or his/her staff) to see how he could leverage the appointment in order to maximize the benefit TO THE PEOPLE OF ILLINOIS.

What WAS the one and ONLY offense here was that Blago tried to turn the process of selecting a new senator to his PERSONAL, material benefit.

NOTHING I have seen, heard or read suggests that Obama (or his staff) had anything but innocent contact with Blago on this matter. Obama (or staff) may have somehow communicated with Blago that they supported what's-her-name as the potential candidate, but it is very clear that, when Blago then tried to suggest he be given something in return, they told him to go to Hell.

It takes the most hostile, mean-sprited, biased and tortured interpretation of everything to somehow smear Obama, Emmanuel, or others in Obama's camp because Blago tried to get something for his troubles.

Quite the contrary, it is clear they shot him down as soon as he got out of line. As some have suggested, it may have been Obama's team who ratted out Blago to the FBI.

Okay,

Senate Repugnants shot down the auto industry bailout. On paper, thsi was because it was too abstract. The White House, fully aware that most of the last ditch efforts to establish a good name for Bush have failed pitifully (like the Annapolis Peace Talks, the War in Iraq, the Banking Bailout, etc), offers to do a bailout using TARP (the banking bailout) money.

The TARP plan has even less strings than the plan in the Senate did. In fact, the TARP plan doesn't have much of any strings at all.

Substantively, the GOP has managed to screw the taxpayer by giving money too loosely to the Big Three while simultaneously appearing tough on bailout by shooting it down int he Senate, and sympathetic to autoworkers by issuing funds from the White House.

It's Three Card Monty. We lose more than we spend but feel like we've made a profit. Until you get home and realize your wallet is empty and you can't remember why.

MWHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Seriously; my loathing for repuglicans is beyond comparison.
My pity for you is equally as intense.

But let's look at the car thing. The Detroit bailout fell through at the last minute today. Republican Senators tried to get concessions that would break the Unions. Since they have foreign car companies doing business in their states (successfully, admittedly; and without Union representation) they took it upon themselves to make one last hurrah in the senate and torpedo the GM, Chrysler bailout.

Now I personally think GM, Chrysler had it coming. They failed to predict the demand that the foreign market did. They thought that Americans would continue to lust for Hummers and other SUVs. They did not anticipate a banking financial collapse; as the rest of us did not either. The Car companies are merely a harbinger of things to come. There is more fallout from the banking collapse to come.

In a perfect capitalist world we should let the Detroit car companies die since they did not have the forethought to address the public will as Toyota did. We have seen this movie before, by the way, when the OPEC embargo happened in the 70's. Toyota and Honda became dominant in the market (while our response was the Ford Pinto exploding car). Chrysler had to ask for a government bailout then, too. It worked then and will likely work now but it will require a massive reorganization.

But everyone agrees that letting Detriot die would have dire consequences. So what do southern republicans do? They take this opportunity to turn it towards their own interests.

You guys suck and make me ashamed to have been born in Alabama.

Statler, the Senate GOP tanked the auto bailout because (1) they are the biggest hypocrites in the history of humankind (Wall Street good, Detroit bad?); (2) they love to union-bust every chance they get; and (3) apparently getting the shit beat out of them in the last election has taught them nothing. Their sudden "we-can't-waste-taxpayer-money!!!!! fiscal conservatism" is the kind of bullshit that makes my head explode. Frankly, I can't believe the Bush administration is even getting involved in the auto bailout, but if they allocate TARP money to it, how is that any worse than just handing it off to banks, if it's no questions asked either way? The public is getting assraped either way, and no one feels good about any of it, but from the polls it appears the auto bailout has slightly better support than the bank bailout.

Strikes me this is business as usual.....

Also, on the car industry bail out, what this looks like from the UK is that the Republicans in the Senate were more interested in a)breaking the unions than curbing the excesses of management, and b) protecting the parts of the car industry in their own home state for personal re-election reasons, than in looking after the US economy as a whole. And also that the White House realised quite how bad the Republicans looked and how bad it would be for the economy, so had to do something to make sure a bail out happened. Republicans in the Senate don't appear to have learned anything from Nov 4th.

Regarding corrupt Govs. Yes, 4 Illinois Govs. jailed in the last 25 years. 4 out of 8. Louisiana and the 'Big Easy' only top that number, though Alaska is closing the gap.

I really like how John McCain has responded to all of this. He's right, we need to support our president and wait for all of the details to come out before we rush to conclusions based on speculation.

So far, it looks like Obama is doing a great job of keeping himself completely isolated from this whole mess, which is why his approval ratings are staying up. Most people don't think about this whole fiasco and Obama in the same context because they can see the divide Obama has drawn between himself and this.

I say it's best to follow John McCain's lead and not be bitter about the election and remember that we need to put the country before party. McCain's so awesome when he's not trying to make "Everyone" happy like he was when he was running for President.

What really amazes me about all of this, is that Blagojevich seems to think that he has some sort of option to resign or not, as if he won't get kicked out on his ass if he doesn't resign.

Maybe he's trying to cultivate the idea that he's mentally unfit to stand trial, because he clearly doesn't see that it's obviously already over for him. He just seems to be the last person to be let in on this fact.

Beamman is right. Man, it's slow news (since all the "interesting" cabinet posts have been filled) and Bush barely raises his head (good thing, because then he gets shoes thrown at him) so the MSM is chewing on this. It's ridiculous. I'm hearing things like "Well, it would be unusual if the Obama team *hadn't* reached out to the Governor in some way about the vacant seat, but why is Emmanuel so quiet, but the Feds made it clear he is "not a target" but where was he at the conference the other day (even though they like to immediately tell about the encounter with the press at his kids recital *a couple of hours later* - gee, do you suppose he was doing FAMILY stuff and THAT's why he wasn't at the conference?) but why is Obama so certain that no one did anything (well, gee, maybe because of all the vitriol Blago spilled in his tapes?) and on and on. Blah blah blah." These people need a REAL story because they are so bored they are trying to make more of this than there is.

David W. said...

A lot of fighting and bickering, but no post on the fact that Obama's rating hasn't been hurt by this despite attempts of the GOP and the right leaning commentators to pin something on him.

My 2 cents: People who think Obama is a secret Muslim terrorist, non-American spawn of Bill Ayers probably don't need to have the whole Blogo controversy to give them negative views on Obama, and most of what the GOP has been doing has been preaching to that crowd. Others feel that Obama isn't involved because they support him or because they heard what Blogo has said about Obama, The rest probably haven't heard the story or don't care. I doubt this story will get any worse for Obama.

Did Obama know about the corruption in the Governor's office? I bet he had his suspicions. You can't have a Governor going around shaking people down left and right without people involved in the state politics not getting a bit suspicious. I am sure stories came out. I am sure many of those involved took their concerns to the prosecutor's office which is why there was an investigation in the first place.

Did Rohm or Obama talk to the Governor about Obama's replacement. I would say that's true. After all, if you were a U.S. Senator who just became President-Elect, wouldn't you talk to the Governor about your replacement. I bet Biden and Clinton have also talked to their respective governors about their replacements too. It's probably why Blogo knows that Obama isn't going to give him anything but appreciation.

Scandal-wise: It doesn't help Obama any, but it won't leave any permanent damage. There's no smoking gun pointing at Obama or any of his staff. There may have been contacts. After all, the guy is governor of Illinois who will be picking Obama's replacement, but I doubt there's any taint of corruption. Besides the selling of Obama's seat, there's nothing else connecting Obama, Rohm, or anyone on Obama's team with Blogo's scandal.

RichardfromHB said...

The Blogo scandal hasn't been so nice for "Candidate No. 5" aka Jessie Jackson Jr. The percentage favoring his appointment to the Senante seat fell from 36% to 18% according to robo-ras survey.

Could this be because of the up front fundraiser for Blogo attended by Junior's brother just two days before the arrest? It feels like Junior is kind of like his dad in the sleaze factor.
