7:25 PM EST [Nate]: So far, Chambliss appears to be overperforming his November 4 margins in the few counties that have precincts reporting results, although those precincts may be non-representative and/or consist of absentee ballots.
6:45 PM EST [Sean]: Quick update.
We're hearing that there are lines in Athens (home of the University of Georgia) in Democratic counties. We also hear DeKalb has been doing particularly well. The staff here is dialing voters in the last-minute push.
For the Obama organizers around the country who could not make it here to Georgia, there is a special tool that field staff created to help make dials into Georgia.
Over 25,000 calls have been made via this tool, and we can say that Ohio's staff has been called out for "weak sauce." After ten calls, one reaches "Data Intern" status. 25 calls, and you reach "Yard Sign" level. The 20-ish labels escalate on perceived value and/or badassery. Right now, "Rahm Emanuel" is the top level. (Some people have resumes out.)

I just heard a report on cable news that turnout has been very lite.....
It would be nice if they kept the polls open in the Democratic areas to ensure everyone got a chance to vote, rather than cutting off. Wonder if there's time for a court order.
Badassery is a truly great word. I don't care if it ever makes the dictionary and I am not sure what part of speech it is, I'm just looking forward to the next time I can use it.

Of course, once again the highly populated Democratic areas have lines, because they tend to be poorer areas and so don't have the money to buy enough voting machine.

Turnout has been light in Democratic counties like Dekalb and Clayton. It was pretty heavy in my home county of Glynn, with the amount of people voting today higher than on election day (Nov 4). This is a 2 to 1 Republican county though.
My guess is Saxby Chambliss 55.6% Jim Martin 44.4% with a total senate vote of 1,960,000 between them. Too bad, but I wanted Martin to win :) Drove my parents to the polls so they could vote Martin :)
What is amusing about our angry mule is that he significantly increases the traffic to the 538 site, by his own hits and those of the amused, thereby increasing the revenues generated. I would venture that the main issue underlying the anger is jealousy. I am of the amused and thoroughly enjoy the robust and diverse vulgarity of the rut mule is in.

The one good thing about the troll is that it reduces the quantity of posts trying to anticipate the answer, when it will come soon enough. 538 readers, myself included, could use a membership in impatients anonymous, and if it takes a sterile halfbreed troll to get us there I guess that's OK.
Still, for the long term, I think Nate should either ban the troll or make a clear statement of policy that we should not respond to it. Either one will work as the troll is obviously a slave to its need for attention.
I voted in Athens, GA at noon today. I was the only voter at 2pm. I showed up to the wrong polling place initially (I just moved, I'm not an idiot), and there was only one other voter there besides me. My wife voted tonight and had only about 20 people in line at 6:30 PM. The poll workers were running low on registration forms at our precinct this evening which seemed to indicate that the turnout was larger then had been expected. I have Broun Chode for a congressman, and would like to have a senator that is not an embarrassment.

My area is Democratic leaning, and the majority of voters my wife saw at the polls were African American. Unfortunately, is looks like I am stuck with Saxby.
Nate, isn't that a bit of an overreaction? The seat was never in the cards for Martin: he really over-performed in November to hold Chambliss off from a majority. This is not a repudiation of Democrats' supposed messaging. It's just a Red state electing a Republican. No reason to panic.
Though not a Georgia native, I am currently in graduate school at the University of Georgia, where I have taught Political Science. Georgia is RedRedRed. I mostly agree with Richard's comment above.
However, there is a message here for 2010. There is a historical reason to believe that republicans will gain seats next cycle. Democrats will need to settle on a majority message.
But give them a break - its been less than a month since Nov. 4. No reason to be too disheartened.
