While we continued to tour Georgia, the dominant political news of the day was the official announcement from Barack Obama that he will nominate Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State. Regardless of one's opinion of the pick, it's clear Clinton has a golden opportunity here to refresh her image not only within the Democratic Party, but with the country as a whole.
Her future presidential ambition is now inextricably bound to Barack Obama's success as President. From Obama's perspective, harnessing that energy to work in his favor was apparently worth the risk of the horrendous message discipline the Clinton machine brings with it wherever it goes. At first blush, it wouldn't seem like a position endlessly scrutinized by foreign governments would be the ideal place for a political group that cannot keep a secret.
But most Democrats seem willing to give Obama's judgment in the matter the benefit of the doubt. In a battle between skepticism of Clinton and trust of Obama, right now most of Obama's supporters who mistrust Clinton seem willing to trust Obama's judgment.
Not that they have a choice. Obama's the boss.
In other news, with Janet Napolitano's expected successful appointment to Homeland Security, Republican Secretary of State Jan Brewer will take the vacant governor's seat. Hillary Clinton's Senate seat will be appointed by Democratic Governor David Paterson. This is the third Democratic Senate seat that needs to be filled. Ted Kaufman will replace Joe Biden in Delaware, and in Illinois Rod Blagojevich will name a replacement for Barack Obama.

I think it is more of a case of keeping her neutralized. When she has to report to him, she is less of a threat.
Also, if Obama's term goes south, Hillary won't be in much of a position to oppose him in 2012.
Besides, the Clinton name is remembered warmly across the ocean, it could help boost the image that Bush and his barnyard friends destroyed.

First. I'm not sure if I agree with the argument that Obama's "judgment" will keep the Clintons' "message discipline" problems under control... some remarks from other members of his campaign (initial reaction to Palin, Biden on clean coal, etc) would indicate he may be less in control than we think.
Hillary herself seems to have tremendous discipline. And I expect that folks she'd hire for the State Department (as opposed to for a campaign) may have some discipline as well. Of course her husband may not have the same discipline, but he might surprise us as well.

if i may, let me venture that actually he's genuinely looking for brainpower. First of all, he was always gonna keep gates at Def. Or if he picked hagel, then he'd need an equally strong state department to avoid overshadowing, and influence-peddling between the two departments that undermine administrations with the best intentions. If you're ever gonna have a strong personality in the room, first of all u need to work against groupthink (that's how we got Iraq-well along with neoconservatism-, and a lot of goodnatured policies badly implemented), but also the list of challenges on foreign policy is just staggering enough but we have a twice in a century economic meltdown.
So, he was always gonna need all the brainpower he needed. I mean, if he got biden, then he needed a strong defense, which then brought the need for a strongly democratic institution at state (who better than clinton), and for all of them to work together, he needed someone who is perceived as an honest broker to both state and defense, is strong enough to bring them in-line when needed. And policy-wise, we have the threat of nuclear proliferation- could end up in the hands of terrorists-, closing of guantanamo, which is more popular than the solutions (send the prisoners home or bring them on US soil or have them incarcerated by allies? could end up being obama's pandora box if he's not careful), kashmir- i mean u have two countries with nuclear weapon and the country that is the battleground for the war on terror involved-, iraq, iran, north korea, russia and its missile plans/expansionist tendencies, the israelo-palestine conflict all the way to africa which is increasingly becoming fertile ground for the expansion of terrorism as well as forming an overarching strategy and framework for dealing with unconventional threats in the 21st century, for which conventional weapons aren't optimal. I'd venture that he wants all the brainpower that he can get. Now this is uncharted water. if the defense department or jim jones decided to go rogue (they're more likely to do so than hillary), that could definitely derail the whole administration and perhaps send us to stone age. but that's the kinda risk he's supposed to take. what's he gonna do? pick a bunch of lightweight with a strong person in chief perhaps? then what the hell does biden do? obama's always said that he thinks his expertise is in foreign issues. does he just delegate the whole foreign policy to biden like bush/cheney? if he's ever gonna take a risk, this is it. im freakin' scared though.

If you think about it, that is true for any Democrat who runs post-Obama, regardless of whether she serves in the administration or not. If Barack succeeds over the next 8 years, the post-Obama nominee of the Dems will be in good shape in 2016.
If he fails, just the opposite. Obama will either be ousted in 2012, forcing the 2016 Dem to depend on a failed Republican successor to Obama; or he will, like GWB, become unpopular in his second term and that will harm his party's nominee in 2016, as it hurt McCain (who was never in the Bush Admin) in 2008.
How much Obama's success or failings directly touches Hillary depends also on how long she stays as his Sec of State. The longer she's in his administration, the greater the effect.
If Mrs. Clinton serves successfully for three years as Sec of State, for example, and then runs for Gov. of New York and wins that office, she won't be seen as a product of the Obama Admin. come 2016. Nevertheless, if he is a failure, it will hurt her chances to win the presidency, just because of her party affiliation.
All that said, I don't think Hillary will ever run for president again. She'll be too old by the time Obama is done. And by then, some other, younger Democrat will emerge as a better candidate.

I'd be okay with Hegel at CIA. In fact, he's probably better than whoever Obama has in mind. Personally, I'd go with Richard Clarke, Scott Ritter, or Robert Baer.
On Hillary. After Biden was picked for VP, she became my first choice for state, with Susan Rice a distant second. I actually wanted Obama to float her name aftet convention season. As it turned out I was pretty much spot on with Hillary and Rice. Both are going to the UN.
Bill Richardson or John Kerry would have been decent, but would barely make a dent on the world stage. Dick Lugar would have been unnaceptable.
I'm a bit quizzical over the claims here and elsewhere that Clinton was a "threat" that needed to be "neutralized" because she might undermine the Obama administration. Seems to me that while she fought hard for the presidential nomination, that battle is over. This year was her best shot for her presidential aspirations, and any future attempt to undermine Obama would only undermine any future candidacy. As far as 2012 goes, attempts to beat a sitting president in the primary process have been remarkably unsuccessful.
I think it's likely that her presidential aspirations are over, and now her interests lie in looking for a way to make her mark in history some other way. So the appointment make sense for her and for Obama.
As for other Clinton-related issues, I was never excited with her as my Senator. My gripe was that I could never name an issue where she took a position with any political risk whatsoever, even though she was in a safe seat and certainly could have afforded to do so. Nor do I understand why she would be a good Supreme Court appointment. I have read nothing to indicate that she has the background to put lasting doctrine in place (and I'd prefer someone who operates on principled legal theory over someone who is a "reliable" vote). I think there are many other options who could provide more direction for the Court for a longer time.
I don´t like this.

In REAL terms this means Buffet is down over 70% just in the last year. BRK.A went from 152,000 to 84,000 just in 2008. On November 19 he lost an un-believable 12% in one day. That’s right, Berkshire Hathaway fell a full 12% on the 19th. Look it up yourself and see. The media trots the old goat out to tell you to invest in a worthless stock market so you can be a loser with him. It doesn’t matter whether the stock market does because it is hopeless. The media is trying to tell you the housing crash has bottomed, and it’s a great time to buy a home. Baloney! The housing crash will go to at least 2011 and maybe 2012. The media claimed there are ten “hot home markets” where values are going up (Elmira, Niagra Falls, Charleston [WV], NOLA, Trenton, Amarillo, Tulsa, Wichita, Boomington, and Decatur). What a lie! The entire banking system is broke, busted, bankrupt, through, finished. They are so loaded with toxic derivatives and worthless houses and commercial property it is hopeless. Massive Citibank fell 60% this week alone! Bank of America is next. The trillion dollars given to the banks would give every one of the 138 million taxpayers in America about $7,000 each in cash- no tax. The current promised bailout is almost 8 trillion. To those who say that Hillary will be too old at 69:
(a) Women have a longer life-expectancy than men
(b) Life expectancy for those with good medical care keeps rising.
In 8 years, given these trends, 69 will not be that old for a woman. She will expect to live another 10-14 years, easily enough time for an 8-year Presidency.
Plus, she will be in better health than McCain. If he hadn't been a POW and had cancer, age wouldn't have been so much of an issue for him (a bull-healthy 72-year-old could use age as a benefit, rather than a detriment: "I'm 72 but as healthy as a 50-year-old! The hardest job in the world won't wear me down, nothing else has dented me!")
The Clinton pick is the result of careful political calculations. Obama and his political team were faced with this question: how can we best accomplish our political agenda? There were two choices: (1) keep campaign promises about substantive bipartisanship, or (2) focus on party loyalty and preventing opposition within Democrats.
The Obama choice was #2. This takes Hillary out of the Senate, where she may have been a drag on Obama's agenda, and it silences any criticism from Bill. However, it also defeats Obama's promise to be a bipartisan, technocratic leader. Clinton has severely limited experience for her new job (much less than other, better options, like Richard Holbrooke). She is also a very polarizing figure.
In other words, this selection demonstrates that Obama has chosen to jettison campaign promises of national unity and meritocracy in favor of political advantage. Only time will tell whether the gamble will work: will his cabinet be too liberal, thus ensuring a GOP Congressional victory in two years?
Mel Martinez will leave his Senate seat before 2010. Crist to appoint a replacement.

What This Economy Needs...
1. Rewarding companies to make products of quality HERE and penalizing companies who only see quantity without demand THERE as the road to wealth.
2. Graduate the capital gains tax over five years to incent long term investment.
3. Establish pilot national health care insurance pool with the auto industry as part of the recovery loan.
4. Cut executive positions and salaries for executives in the auto industry. Cut union salaries to between $14 and $21 an hour with a freeze on non-health care bennies for three years.
5. Demand the industry and their suppliers "go green" within a year.
6. Get real competition in health care by letting the government into the game with a non-profit company who forces the other companies to behave like a true free market.
7. Name Jack Welch the Transportation Secretary and give him direct control of the auto industry recovery.
8. Increase investment in rail transportation to relieve the use of current transportation model.
9. Eliminate interest income as a taxable form of income for those making under $250,000 a year.
10. Give tax credit for full payment of credit card balances monthly at a rate 25% of entire yearly balance on card.
Hillary Clinton doesn't HAVE any "Presidential ambitions" left. 2008 was her chance and that's it.
By 2016 she will be too old.
And of course there will be an entire new crop of Democratic contenders all of whom will be younger and better positioned than she will be.
When talking about the future people always act as though it will be like the recent past. But, of course it won't.
Who talked about Barack Obama in 2000? Nobody.
Who talked about George Bush II back in 1992? He was then the ne'er do well son of the defeated ex-President with virtually no accomplishments and lots of liabilities, not least that he was a useless rich-boy party-drone.
The next 8 years will see lots of new faces and one of them will be the nominee of the Democratic party.
Some Republicans predict that Jindal will be the Republican nominee in 2012 or 2016 and they might even be right. After all Republicans have a habit of appointing the "usual suspects" like John McCain.
But, the last 4 of 5 Democratic nominees, with the sole exception of Al Gore, came out of nowhere: Dukakis, Clinton, Kerry and Obama were hardly the front runners 8 years before their nomination!
Perhaps "tea on the tarmac at Tuszla" was a vision rather than a memory, and she was momentarily confused.
Mel Martinez only said, according to one source, that he MAY retire before 2010, but all the MSM are reporting only that he will not run for re-election.

Hey, here's the deal. HRC is smart. She took Obama to school on policy in every debate--he narrowed the gap, but by his own admission, he had to work to reach her standard. I completely agree with the "smart" angle. President-elect Obama is with the best minds he can find that share most of his vision. It seems picking Clinton is as much internal politics as it is policy. This rewards Clintonites (although I'd rather see her on the SCOTUS - but I guess she's too political for that body) + she is a good ambassador for the u.s. As far as policy, clearly she is more centrist than he, so it remains to be seen if they can actually work together. I'm concerned about this pick than any other Obama has made.

From the outside looking in, the only Democrats anyone in the world outside the US has heard of are Bill and Hillary, Al Gore, Barack Obama and possibly Madeleine Albright.
Having a star Democrat as SoS does give a message to the world that Obama means business in this area, especially given that Obama himself is likely to be very tied up with domestic economic policy in at least the first months of his term.
As a woman I also think the symbolism of having a woman in one of the highest offices is important. From the perspective of the rest of the world, America is going to be represented by a black man and a white woman which I think gives a pretty powerful message in all sorts of ways.

Having a star expert at the helm of SoS would probably send an even stronger message than yet another lawyer-turned-politician. Obama could have chosen Richard Holbrooke, who is much more qualified for the job than HRC, but instead he made a calculated political move. It was all domestic politics.

Which seems to suggest any ex-president automatically has a machine. And also supports my point.
-Al Gore and the Clintons haven't exactly been cogs in the same machine, this dating back to the election campaign of 2000.
-Ditto for any number of former Clinton cabinet members and officials, two examples being Bill Richardson and Robert Reich, who not only aren't part of any Clinton machine, but came out in support of Obama during the primaries.
It's just one of those terms that seems canned by the MSM, and is used by lazy writers and lazy thinkers.

Why do people continue to overstate Democratic disunity?
According to Gallup polls from the last 2 weeks, Democrats favored Clinton's appointment 79%-12%, and 80% of Democrats have a favorable opinion of her.
The number of Democrats who are supporting Obama's selection of Clinton because they trust Obama--despite not trusting Clinton--is extremely small. Why give them such a voice?

Nice rebuttal. Do you have evidence to support your claim? With the exception of his economic team, Obama is no bipartisan. His Attorney General is an old, partisan Clinton hand, instrumental in the type of corruption (pardon) that Obama promised to end. Tom Daschle is a hyperpartisan. And are you going to tell me that Hillary Clinton has either bipartisan credibility or foreign policy experience to exceed that of Holbrooke or someone similar? She's a very polarizing figure and a former lawyer with nothing near the experience Holbrooke has dealing with foreign policy. But she does give Obama several domestic political advantages, which is the reason for the choice.
This is the kind of "old Washington politics" that Obama was elected to eliminate.
