Senate Projections, 11/1

Democrats appear to be on the verge of wrapping up several more pickups of Republican-held seats -- but their odds of finishing with 60 or more seats are becoming longer.

The good news for Democrats comes in several races that already leaned Democratic, and now appear to be more solidly so. Further polling in Oregon confirms that Jeff Merkley has established a lead there. Frankly, since much of the vote has come in from Oregon and Republican turnout is depressed there, I think it's more likely that Merkley will win by double-digits than Gordon Smith will hold on to his seat. In North Carolina, we have added polls from Research 2000, Elon, and CNN, all of which give Kay Hagan leads ranging from 5 to 9 points; the race remains competitive, but sits on the brink of "lean" and "likely" Democrat. There is abundant polling of New Hampshire, and John Sununu does not appear poised to make any kind of late surge.

Meanwhile, in Alaska, Research 2000 has become the second firm to poll the race since Ted Stevens' guilty verdict, and gives Democrat Mark Begich a 22-point lead. That, plus the 8-point lead that Begich had in an earlier Rasmussen poll, lead the model to conclude that the race is essentially unwinnable for Stevens. Notwithstanding the weird things that can happen to turnout in a state like Alaska should the presidential race get called early, it too looks like a safe Democratic seat.

Those races, along with Colorado, New Mexico, and Virginia, which we had already "called" for the Democrat, constitute what look to be 7 fairly certain pickups (although partisans on either side of the Dole-Hagan race should still be making all the phone calls they can muster); this would give the Democrats a 58-seat caucus counting independents Bernie Sanders and Joe Lieberman. The 59th and 60th seats, however, may be tougher. Minnesota remains about as much of a toss-up as any race can get; the only poll added since our last update, from Research 2000, gives Norm Coleman a 3-point lead. My sense is also that Minnseota may behave fairly independently from the trend nationwide; that is, I could see Coleman holding onto his seat even given a fairly bad night for the Republicans overall, and to a lesser extent the reverse holding true for Franken. (The contrast might be something like North Carolina, which feels like more of a 'surge'/wave election).

Meanwhile, the three Southern seats in Georgia, Kentucky and particularly Mississippi are increasingly looking close-but-not-quite for the Democrats. The surges of Jim Martin and Bruce Lunsford in the first two races appeared to be dictated principally by the financial crisis and the attendant bailout, as the Republican incumbents in both races voted for the bailout bill. However, given the relative lack of bad financial news over the past couple of weeks, it is not surprising that they have stalled out some. Martin, though, probably remains in a stronger position than our numbers indicate, as I think some of these turnout models are conservative in Georgia given what has transpired in the early voting; at the very least, he has a good chance of salvaging a run-off.

In Mississippi, Roger Wicker is neither a particularly unpopular incumbent (he was wise enough to vote against the bailout) nor has Ronnie Musgrove been a particularly compelling opponent. Although Musgrove might theoretically benefit from a black turnout surge, Wicker is now winning a comparable percentage of the white vote to John McCain.

We'll have at least one more of these updates before Tuesday, and possibly two as polls and events dictate.

they are so reluctant to admit that Obama's #'s are stable with a significant lead of 4.5%...

but they try to blame it on Halloween...

"Obama's lead firmed heading into the final weekend as drew even with men, made inroads down South and added to his new lead in the suburbs.

But this may have been due to parents out with trick-or-treating kids.

McCain held on to married women and Catholics but can't seem to get traction among independents or in the middle class."

Those of you who are so distant from your families or think that such disaffection is common are truly sad souls. No one should be so into themselves as to ignore their kin. If it happens, be sad over it, question it, do not excuse it.

I think Obama went to Hawaii to make things right concerning his birth certificate.

The trip had nothing to do with that typical racist white woman he refers to as his grandmother. Had he been as concerned for her as he appeared, he would never have said those things he said about her, cementing her legacy for the World and his Kids in a rather unflattering light, opportunist that he is! I mean wasn’t she in bad shape in April? How much more time did the poor dear have?

Absolutely. It is a national disgrace and it is by design. I live in New York State and vote in a all white precinct. I've voted every year for the past 24 years and have NEVER waited more than 10 minutes in line to vote - including presidental election years. The hours-long lines to vote in minority precincts in battlground states are engineered by election officials of those states and are no accident.

You reaction might have been better applied to Joe the Plumber, as for whom few here feel any sympathy, but many people in fact feel outrage, especially among the independents who are by nature questioning and skeptical.

I am much more offended by the Obamas lack of concern about this woman who attended his Senate swearing in and whom he has failed to visit despite numerous trips to Boston in the intervening four years.

Here you go, Auntie, a couple a hundred bucks. Or give an aide a few bills and have them drop them off even if you can't get to her.

It's struck me over and over again these last few weeks that the GOP would probably actually like Obama to win - so that he has to deal with the mess that they've left, he has to supervise a country in dire financial trouble with unprecedented supressions of human rights and disparities of income, and then they can try and blame it all on him come the next election or the one after.

So true. I have seen a number of French Canadian films at Cannes - the Quebecois are so proud of their Francophone commitment, yet it is obvious that the French regard the accent and overall sound as inferior to their own, and this really deflates the Canadians.

In my so-so French, the difference is obvious. It sounds like French spoken by Ohians.

"Meanwhile, in Alaska, Research 2000 has become the second firm to poll the race since Ted Stevens' guilty verdict, and gives Democrat Mark Begich a 22-point lead."

I watched the Alaska senate debate between Begich and Stevens. What was abundantly clear is that Begich is another Alaska politician not ready for prime time. He's not a total idiot. But like Sarah Palin, he doesn't seem ready for the job. Very often, he couldn't answer simple, easy questions posed to him by the journalists in the debate format. On quite a few occassions, they had to repeat the questions to try to elicit a senisble answer from Begich.

On the other hand, the felonious Ted Stevens seemed much smarter, much more aware of what the job entails and how to get things done. Obviously, being an incumbent for as long as Stevens has been in Washington has helped him. I thought Stevens would be worse, at least somewhat frazzled by his conviction.

On a sharpness scale of 1-10, 1 a total Dan Quayle-esque dullard and 10 sharp as a chef's knife, I would say Stevens rates about an 8. I doubt he ever was a genius, and in some instances he shows his age. He had to have some questions repeated just so he could hear them. But he's not fermisht along the lines of Strom Thurmond in his last years in the Senate. As for Begich, sadly he's no more than a 3 (as dull as Washington state's Patty Murray). It's a shame that Alaska didn't put up a better Democrat, because Begich will win. He'll likely only serve 6 years and then get replaced by someone better.

On Palin -

(Those regulars over the past month I hope recognize I am a pretty serious poster, and don't make stuff up).

This is from the upper echelons of the Obama campaign; I'm a couple degrees of separation, but the info I've previously gotten has always proven true.

There are high-ups in all campaigns who have friendships with the other side, and as in any relationships, gossip occurs.

The disenchantment with Palin among most McCain people is real, even beyond what has been revealed. This stems, as we heard, from the initial issue debriefings.

Anyway, my friend has gotten a list of specific basic foreign policy and geography issues that she had zero knowledge above - we're talking about someone who would be out early on "So You Think You Are Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" - Absolutely stunning ignorance.

I've been sworn to secrecy until Wednesday, but it won't matter, since the McCain folks say expect this all to come out - both for scapegoating her (which she doesn't deserve, except to have agreed to be the candidate), but also to destroy her chance of ever running again.

The sense also was that even if McCain won, he would want to find some way to keep her from ever being sworn in - leaking this and other info, hoping the Troopergate charges widened, maybe some McCain electors refusing to vote for her so he could redo his choice. But anyway, they, more than anyone, know how utterly unqualified she is to be president.

It seems to me like the graph of "seats won" is off by one. The chance of "winning all safe seats" (= 56 seats, 5 pickups) is only shown as 90% - the app. 98% next to it seems more reasonable. Of course it may be that all the 100%'s listed are in reality 99.5%

The next steps in the graph then roughly correspond to the chances of pickups in OR, NC and MN (with chances of a miss higher up being balanced by chances of an extra pickup further down.

If I am right, the chances of a filibuster-proof majority is a little over 40%, not a little over 20.

2)The philosophy of the Democratic Party is not based on logic because the human mind developed that concept quite recently. It doesn't work that way all the time because there are other things for the mind to consider. The needs of our neighbors, family, society, etc. Research in neurobiology using PET scans to determine how we think, arrive at morality based ideas has so changed our understanding of that relationship, there are several books in the legal field advocating a serious rethinking of our criminal judicial system. Given that we have the highest worldwide percentage of our population incarcerated, I think there is solid evidence that what we are using is not working (except for the privitized jail companies).

3) It is based on this part of the Constitution:
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Note that a huge portion of our national budget goes to providing for the common defense. In fact, we spend ~ 15% more than all other countries on earth COMBINED. Some of us revere Ike's comments on this foolishness. We would rather build schools than bombers, safe roads and bridges than aircraft carriers, effective dams, levees and better environmental recoevery than SDI. As much as I respected and loved my Uncle, I wonder what he could have accomplished as a rocket scientist if he had not spent his career on the design and implement team for the Poseiden, Polaris and Trident missiles for the nuclear subs.
