Today we continue our Road to 270 series with the Buckeye State, Ohio.
BATTLEGROUND OF BATTLEGROUNDS, Ohio and its twenty electoral votes are up for grabs. From what we saw in the state, Barack Obama's ground organization is unprecedented, and John McCain's had yet to materialize in force with a few short weeks to go. A smattering of polls in October gave McCain tiny leads, the vast majority of public polls showed Obama with a lead in the middle single digits in the closing month. Ohio is similar to Missouri in that its cluster of demographic data points leave it near the median in nearly every category. Only three of the 26 categories we've chosen put Ohio in the top ten: unemployment rate (7th), manufacturing job share (8th) and fewest Hispanics (10th). And, like Missouri, Ohio tends to pick winners in the presidential race.
Key Demographics

Note: Factors colored in red can generally be thought to help McCain. Factors in blue can generally be thought to help Obama. Factors in purple have ambiguous effects. Except where otherwise apparent, the numbers next to each variable represent the proportion out of each 100 residents in each state who fall into that category. Fundraising numbers reflect dollars raised in the 2008 campaign cycle per eligible voter in each state. Figures for seniors and youth voters are proportions of all residents aged 18+, rather than all residents of any age. The figure for education reflects the average number of years of completed schooling for all adults aged 25+. The figure for same-sex households reflects the number of same-sex partner households as a proportion of all households in the state. The liberal-conservative index is scaled from 0 (conservative) to 100 (liberal), based on a Likert score of voter self-identification in 2004 exit polls. The turnout rates reflect eligible voters only. Unemployment rates are current as of June 2008.
What McCain Has Going For Him
John McCain has spent a tremendous amount of time in Ohio, as has Sarah Palin. Rural Ohio is still Republican country, and Ohio has many more rural -- if more sparsely populated -- counties in Ohio. Joe the Plumber is also from Ohio. "American" ancestry is a bigger-than-the-median draw in Ohio, Ohio is slightly undereducated, slightly less favorable for same-sex households, and has more self-identifying Republicans than most states. There are more seniors than normal in Ohio, which also favors McCain. The evangelical base turnout was huge in Ohio in 2004, and if McCain's addition of Palin can generate huge turnout from these voters, he can perhaps take the state and overperform the polls. While we're skeptical from what we've seen that McCain's ground game is even in the ballpark of Obama's, stranger things have happened.
What Obama Has Going For Him
Ohio's economy is in shambles, and Barack Obama has hammered an economic message for months that resonates with Ohio voters. Southeast Ohio, the swing area of the state, is Joe Biden country, and when we caught up with him there he seemed in his element -- literally. Although the Ohio River valley was tough turf for Obama in the primary, some polls have put him ahead of Kerry's pace there, and increased turnout in other parts of the state could put him over the top. Unquestionably, Barack Obama's ground force is as good as it gets in Ohio, and if there is a sporadic Democratic voter in Ohio, one of that voter's neighbors has talked to him or her. In the Secretary of State's office, there's no Ken Blackwell this year, as Democrat Jennifer Brunner is in charge. The vote here will come down to the economy and ground game, and Barack Obama holds well on both of those fronts.
What To Watch For
In the House, one seat -- the 1st district where incumbent Republican Steve Chabot faces Democrat Steve Driehaus -- is a tossup. In two districts held by retiring Republican incumbents, Democrats are leaning favorites to pick up seats -- Ralph Regula's 16th seat near Canton and Deborah Pryce's 15th on the western side of Columbus. Jean Schmidt, whose 2d district seat is always a target for Democrats, is still favored to hold her district. Ted Strickland isn't up for re-election until 2010, Sherrod Brown was just elected to his seat two years ago, and George Voinovich's term is up in two years.
In the presidential race, if John McCain doesn't win Ohio, only three of our 10,000 simulations yesterday showed him winning the election. Simply put, McCain must win Ohio or the election is done.

Okay, sorry, I know everyone hates "first" posts, but this was probably the last chance I'm going to have. -g-

I'm sure he won't build one in the next 20h either ;-)
I'm at the call center for Students for Barack Obama at the University of Minnesota. We're going strong, and we could very well make the difference for Al Franken.
Obama's grandmother died.

Barack's grandmother just died. I know his staffers read this blog. Please pass along our condolences...

ops double post sorry
RIP - Toot
How sad that a day before his greatest triumph he is faced with such grief.
Sad news about Obama's grandmother. Does anyone think this could provide even more motivation for people to go out and vote for him?
Best poll of the day:

Can we agree that these people have no shame?

Obama's grandmother and the NV state director passed away today.
wow
O dear god...Obama's grandmother has just passed. How very very sad for him. Go on Obama, keep your chin up. Our prayers are with you and WE WILL give you a victory tomorrow!
Tomorrow is a turning point in history, alright. It's when the greatest democracy in modern history, to correct for the blunder and utter failure of one presidency, elects the most illegitimate candidate ever, thus accelerating the decline from a superpower to the throes of a third-world backwater.

My condolences to Sen. Obama for the loss of his grandmother. Tomorrow will be bittersweet for our candidate.
I'm glad he got the chance to see her before she went. At the same time I'm saddened that she didn't make it long enough to see her grandson President Elect.
If their GOtV in Ohio is anything like it is here in barely contested Michigan, I have faith...
Just received my second phone call reminding me to vote, making it my 5th in person contact with an Obama campaign volunteer. Its pretty awesome they have the extra human resources to keep contacting guaranteed voters like me...
Bring it hommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmme!
I was just about to say, how will the neocons spin this into a negative....
and Drudge steps up to the plate. :P
By the way, I worked with Terrance Tolbert here in NYC on education. He was a good guy who died too young. Wow. What a doubly sad set of events.
YES---lets go vote tomorrow NO MATTER WHAT!
My sympathies to Senator Obama and his family, on the death of his beloved grandmother, 'Toot'.
Sad news regarding Obama's grandmother. I'm sure he'll mention her in his speech tomorrow.
As martijn pointed out, Biden's not really literally in his element unless he has Bidenium or something and walks constantly through a block of it.

can you tell me, do these GOP voters that are going to come out of the forests have transport? Because if not, they are not going to make it all the way to the polling stations in time..
wv flater - that picture of John MCC with his tongue hanging out sure doesn't flater him
Special place in hell for Matt Drudge.
So sad for Obama but at the same time his grandmother lived a good life and may end up being responsible for shaping the life of the one of the most important figures in American history.
ok mccain, out of respect, if you have any left, stop the negative attacks NOW please!
@shap
I'm sure we'll see some freeptards suggesting he pulled the plug on her somehow.
The evangelical base turnout was huge in Ohio in 2004...
...because there was a scary "gay marriage amendment" on the ballot. That more than anything drove religious conservatives to the polls, and that's why Bush got reelected.
oh, just read the news about Obama's grandmother. That's rough.
My thots and prayers go out to the Obama family.
A victory will not only be a victory to us all, but to 'Tut" for raising an exceptional leader and motivator in Barack.
May your soul RIP.

leave drudge alone. you cannot argue with a fool
Deepest sympathy to the Obama family on the loss of his grandmother. I know all of his supporters wanted HER to hear the good news. She gets to watch from a better place.
9th inning rally.....get on the phone and get your circle of influence to the polls!
I live in Cincinnati- we must have seen a half-dozen Obama canvassers in our neighborhood. Zero for McCain. My wife and I waited on line for 3 1/2 hours Saturday to vote. I would estimate 80% of the crowd was African-American, and I bet 90% of the people on line were Obama supporters. It almost felt like a rally. The level of enthusiasm between the two campaigns couldn't be more different.
gotta love how foxnews TV does not even mentions this....nothing....cnn and MSNBC already did stories on this and gave condolences already.....
My condolences to Obama and his family.

Very sad about Obama's grandmother.
Does anyone know how Ohioans are responding to the whole "Joe the Plumber" thing?
Not that Drudge doesn't have a special place in hell, but the fisrt line of the AP story is:
"Barack Obama says that his grandmother has died."
We have a Honda Element, so maybe Biden does, which would mean he would be literally in his element...
"I reweighted the polls with numbers that made me happier by subtracting 20 from all of Obama's values and now McCain wins my simulation" a little impersonation from a previous thread..

Huh. Did he have PoA over her in her medical decisions? If so, how long before we hear from the GOPers the following:
"Obama pulled the plug on his typical white granma Toots on the last day of the campaign to garner the sympathy vote. Murderer."
I hate that I expect this of them.
Must give them the benefit of the doubt (repeat ad inf).
man...that is heart breaking.

First of all, not really seeing what Drudge is doing wrong here besides reporting a story. This is news, correct?
Second, you who are issuing your pre-emptive conspiracy theories of hate and vitriol are the sick ones here, not the ones you try and demonize in your paranoid world.
You are the ones dreaming up the sick, twisted plots. I'm yet to hear any grossly exagerrated or misrepresented "spin" from the right on this story.
Ont thing that McCain has going for him is the loss of population in traditionally Democratic strongholds such as Cleveland and Youngstown. The collapse of the manufacturing sector in Ohio has, oddly, helped the Republicans. Of course, many of those people moved to Colorado and North Carolina, putting them more in play.
Obama has a great ground game in Ohio, and college students are breaking for Obama and working for him.
And sympathies to the Family.
Just when you thought libs couldn't go any lower, it seems they killed Obama's gramma the day befoer the election in order to get a simpathy vote.

"I'm yet to hear any grossly exagerrated or misrepresented "spin" from the right on this story."
when Obama went to Hawaii last week, right-wing nutjobs were all up in arms about how he was really going to keep her from telling the truth about his birth, going to pull the plug on her, etc.
For once Mule Rider is correct. Let's wait a few hours and see what happens.
Let's remember that "He" is a liberal poser who specializes in ridiculous parodies of conservative military members.
I went out canvassing in Ohio today, down in Cincinnati in the heart of the Republican areas. I was just hanging door tickets with polling information, but every bit helps, and I know there were lots of us out today.
Keep it up, everyone! Final big push!

Yes, yes I do. Joe has greatly hurt McCain here in Ohio. Keep in mind that while Florida may not get the local channels looking into him, we did and so the facts about his so called story were pretty well spread in his home state. In fact if you really look at the Ohio polls, you'll find we swapped places with Florida shortly after the JtP bs.
sympathies to the Family.
@sherwick
I'm positive that the McCain campaign would like to stop negative ads at this point, out of respect. Unfortunately, it's too late. They really would need 24 to 48 hours to unwind their ad buys. This is one time I really do feel badly for them, but hopefully, they will issue a condolence statement.
While it's crushing for Obama's grandmother to have passed on only the day before her grandson almost certainly becomes president-elect, at least the outcome is sufficiently certain that she basically knew before she died that he would likely become president. Still, it's sad that she couldn't last a couple of more days. I can't imagine being more proud of a grandchild than she must have been of Barack.
picking up theme from previous thread about calling the election,
in the UK it's illegal to make predictions while the polls are still open. I appreciate the US is a BIG country. But...
any Aussies lurking? You have a BIG country too. Do you have announcements about NSW and Tasmania before the polls close in Western Australia?
Prayers and condolences for the Obama family.
On a lighter note. I see that the faux news site has removed its national poll numbers from the front page and don't even mention them in the linked article. Guess they got a lot of complaints from their readership.
If Mule Rider's words ring true, I will be back here to apologize to him personally.
I still have my doubts, though. Limbaugh and Hannity are scum, and I wouldn't put it past them.
Second, you who are issuing your pre-emptive conspiracy theories of hate and vitriol are the sick ones here, not the ones you try and demonize in your paranoid world.
Someone who has read freerepublic.com? Someone who grew up among the people who founded "freep"? Someone who was (inadvertently) subjected to "Truth Raido" from a very young age because my father found it helpful for understanding the poor, crazy-ass, cow-town where he'd choose to hang his shingle after residency? It was traumatic, let me tell you.

I just saw a comment on WaPo guessing that Obama's visit to Tutu last week was a "death knoll" (whatever that means) to ensure she died without "confessing" he wasn't born in America.
There is a lot of hate out there, even now.
Luckily she's beyond all that now. God bless and God speed, Tutu!
Tomorrow is the apocalypse. The forces of light led by Obama will clash with the forces of darkness led by McCain. Stay close to our leader and Obama will lead us through the valley of darkness and into the eternal paradise that waits on the other side. Do not fear for he will protect us. When light and darkness meet, the darkness is vanquished. So has it always been, so shall it always be. What people need to understand is that we are founding a new Earth tomorrow. A new Eden will be built upon the ashes of the old world. Benevolent king Obama will rule from his throne on Jerusalem and usher in an eternal era of peace and happiness. No more sin, no more hate, no more war. We will all live in a paradise just a breath away from God. Those that side against us and join McCain and his legion of darkness will be cast from this new Eden into a pool of Hell fire where they will be burned by flames that burn but do not consume. When you make your vote you are truly deciding your fate. Do you side with the light or do you side with the dark?

RWD,
Yeah, and there are still several thousand people who swear that Bush was responsible for slaughtering nearly 3,000 innocent civilians just so he could go poke around in the one country who gave his daddy grief (Iraq) and another that is a 3rd world shit hole with nothing else to offer (Afghanistan) so another 4,000 or so military men and women would die in vain.
@mulerider
The vile is on freerepublic already. It's been there since the first thread came up. Don't worry, no reason to speculate here. It's like watching the earth turn (same thing everyday).
Drudge change his headline and Fox did a decent little snippet so maybe they get some redemption.
Not sure how those are comparable, Mule. I'm talking about very recent history, in the last 2 weeks. I haven't read anyone on a pro-Obama board spouting 9/11 conspiracies this election season.
Joe said...

Ohio has counties in three other states: Ohio County, Indiana; Ohio County, Kentucky; and Ohio County, West Virginia.

Never mind. The Freeptards are already spewing their vile and digusting accusations.
I have to agree with Mule Rider on this. Although I too expect little from the likes of Drudge and Faux, I think it best to offer our condolences and leave it at that. If they Drudge/Faux go conspirital, then only they look the bitter fools. But to spout vitrol about them for what we expect them to do in the absence of any such actual statements makes us as intollerant as them.
My thoughts to the whole Obama family. Toots, you have given all of us hope through the great job you have done raising your grandson. Thank you and rest in peace.

If you press the link that is given in post #11, you'll see that the thread was pulled quickly.

FROM FREE REPUBLIC BLOG:
"Cancer patients usually pass away from a planned terminal sedation.
This may be the first politically timed terminal sedation ever, though."
Does it really surprise anybody what kind of pond scum neocons are?
Just remember, Joe prime:
That's the lunatic fringe. If it stays out there, that's cool. They're so delusional that they think McCain is winning.
Radio/TV are another matter.
You hear these anecdotal reports about how there's always some trouble with an electronic voting machine...and the problem is ALWAYS someone voting Democratic having their vote change to a vote for a Republican.
Yet, you never hear sound, solid proof that it's anything more than a very isolated issue that may work both ways....if AT ALL.
Makes me wonder if there aren't some sick liberals out there just spouting random accusations to build the case that there's a constant effort by Republicans to "steal" the election when their evidence is weak at best.
These conspiracy theories can work both ways.
I wanted to see what the idiots at HUMANEVENTS.COM had to say about her death. Disgusting as usual. Is this really what the conservative movement is left with?
Here's an excerpt from one person.
"Well Barack just lost granny, may she rest in peace. She probably died last week and he has had her on ice til today so he can get the sympathy vote now. I wouldn't put anything past that guy.
Nov 03, 2008 @ 04:43 PM
FACTS SPEAK, for themselves"
My heart goes out to Barack Obama and his family on the death of his grandmother -- I know she will be sorely missed.
Here's an anecdotal report from my drive across Ohio -- I went from Cincinnati to Cleveland and back over the weekend. My tally:
Obama signs: 23
McCain signs: 6
The Obama signs were all in front of old mansions in Cleveland Heights, while the McCain signs were all in cornfields next to the highway.
Obama bumper stickers: 9
McCain bumber stickers: 2
"Sarah!" stickers: 1
The Obama bumper stickers were all affixed to actual bumbers. The McCain bumper stickers were taped in back windows. The "Sarah!" sticker also adorned a back window.
The "VOTE 4 HOPE" I've painted on my back window got a thumbs-up from a guy on a Harley.
Oh, and I also saw 19 (count 'em NINETEEN) dead deer by the side of the road. I have no idea how that tally matches other weekends, or whether it has any statistical significance.
WV: menes, as in "Menes is the votes we'll be casting for Obama tomorrow."

Agreed. But we should all be watching closely. The stench of desperation is thick...
Some of the comments on the freerepublic thread are disgusting. Someone ought to bring this website and its posters to the attention of the wider public.
Basically just restating what Mason said, but...
You can't quote shit from some of those blogs and attribute that to the vast majority of conservatives.
Those are lunatics, and there are an equal number of fringe idiots on the left who, when you read there bs from the other side, would also send a chill down your spine and make you sick to your stomach.
Quit attributing what 0.01% of the population say as representative of 45-50% of everybody.
You hear these anecdotal reports about how there's always some trouble with an electronic voting machine...and the problem is ALWAYS someone voting Democratic having their vote change to a vote for a Republican.
Of course it is. You didn't actually think anyon really votes for the GOP, did you?
But seriously... These "vote swaps" on touchscreens are really little more than a miscalibrated TS, probably. I've encountered touchscreen ATMs with the same problem, and guess who makes the ATMs?
Mechanical-electrical buttons are where it's at.

I am deeply saddened that Madelyn did not get to see her grandson finish his race. But we can take some solace in the remarkable legacy she has left the world in Barack Obama. Her light will shine through him across our nation and around the world in the years to come and on into history.
Andy JS,
Welcome to America - where the 1st amendment to our constitution defends the right to freedom of speech, even when that speech is vile, disgusting, and without human.
I hope you are as disgusted about people in the streets burning flags and saying "Fuck America!" and "God Damn America!" and "Death to America!" as you are by a few idiots on a message board who unleash disgusting and detestable conspiracy theories about Obama simply because they despise him sorely.
just watched BBC 10 o'clock main news lead with election, mentioning Obama's grandmother's death. They did a pretty good summary of how the electoral college works for the Brits who don't follow 538, including a map that morphed the states according to their votes, and identified NH and PA as the blue battleground states, and had GA, FL, NM, NV,AZ OH, IN, MO, VA etc as the red battlegrounds. But I was ashamed at their look at the polling since the summer - they used Gallup!! BY ITSELF! NOT EVEN SAYING WHICH GALLUP MODEL! Boy does the BBC need a lesson from Nate!
Can't wait to hear what Limbaugh says about this. As he goes so does the millions of ditto heads brainwashed by him.
Tomorrow it is then. We've been here, some of us, every day for weeks on end. Watching the ups and downs, the ebbs and flows.
And here we are, almost there...

I'm an Ohioan at OSU. I was incredibly surprised to see McCain advertising Joe online, because I had been under the impression that Joe was a huge gaff for the campaign. Everyone thinks it is idiotic - but most of my friends are voting Obama. I don't see any McCain fans talking about Joe in general or in sidewalk chalk/flyers/etc, so they're not warming up to it or embracing it at all.
zebra,
You aren't worth a stack of shit. Don't ever address me unless you have something worthy or intelligent to read in rebuttal to what I say....an ignorant one-liner like "You need help!" ain't gonna cut it.

hi aunt karen, you are the voice of sweet reason as usual.
How are things in your neck of the woods?
I wonder if the Obama campaign somehow knows I voted early. I haven't been bothered by canvassers from either campaign even though the Obama campaign knows I'm a supporter from canvasser contact during the primaries. By all accounts, Obama's ground game here in Columbus isn't lacking by any means, so it's a bit strange.
I don't think the market will reacto much if Obama is elected. There might be some volatility if McCain is, however, although I'm not sure which direction it would be.
Stock markets behave similar to futures markets in that they are pricing expected future events in well before they happen based on the best available information. The market has been pricing in an Obama win for some time now, not that it's likely to have made much difference.
It's just to say that the market has been planning for it, so it coming true will be of little surprise. The only surprise will be if McCain is elected, hence my prediction of volatility.
Is there going to be a Road to 270 for Washington, DC as well? It and Virginia are the only two left. Even though DC isn't a state, it IS 3 electoral votes...

We have five and a half time zones in Canada. In theory, it is illegal for western provinces to have any election results broadcast to them from the east until the local polls are closed.....
In practice, given the power of the internet and telephones, it is now recognized to be impossible to enforce and the law will no doubt be reviewed soon....
[WV: dogent : lowgrade MSM/comedy channel aka Fox News]
Isn't allowing these things to be posted an implicit endorsement of them by the channel?
SCOTUS and Congress say no. The operator of a message board is not responsible for it's content so long as they obey applicable laws.
Other wise I could post a link to something illegal on fox's board and it would be their problem.
My question was more ethical than legal.
Real Joe
is the surprise coming????
is it that you're
a) Zogby
b) Drudge
c) Palin
d) Lieberman
or
e) O himself?
zebra,
That was a sock puppet. I didn't make that statement to you about sucking balls.
@mrs b
Well, it's so blue here (Massachusetts), that I'm more keeping an eye on my sister's family (NH). She lives in southern NH, so a lot of MA influence, but I do think that it's going to be solidly blue.
Even my poor neocon friends in Augusta, ME see this as a chance to vote for sanity. The bottom line for a lot of people, is (and this is somewhat sad) that Sarah Palin is just downright scary. We'd all much rather be voting on our candidate's strengths, rather than some boogey-man garbage about the other guy. In the end, my neo-con friends just could not come up with a reason to vote FOR McCain, rather than against Obama. There's a message right there.
I also believe Susan Collins is quite safe in Maine, and I'm actually glad of that.
As an aside, we have 3 ballot questions in MA - the first is to eliminate state income taxes; the second is to make possession of less than an ounce of marijuana into a civil offense, rather than crimanal; and finnaly to eliminate dog racing (there is horse racing here, this question doesn't touch that).
I personally will be voting no on question 1 (I'd love not to pay state taxes, but seriously!); yes on 2 (why waste time and money booking and jailing for one or two joints?); and yes on three (these dogs are abused - unlike the horses - and there are only two tracks in the state, so not much in terms of jobs and/or state revenue).
I rarely agree with Mule Rider or his sockpuppets, but in this case I agree with him, to a point.
Yes, the FReeptards are going to be all over this like white on rice. Yes, there will be weird conspiracy theories. But unless Drudge posts something like SHOCK: Obama's Grandmother Said to "Pass Away", Doctors Question Timing..., we should all just chill the fsck out.
The fact that the first thing we think of is "How will the GOP spin this?" speaks volumes about how low our political discourse has sagged.
WV - towersi, as in Obama's poll lead towersi over McCains' right now.
Let's take up a collection and have the text comparison guy tell us if pk, fake mr, he and so forth are the same person. :)
I have no idea how election laws work in Ohio, well, I mean I have an idea, but I don't know about the reporting of who has voted etc. That said, in Canada there is a list of who has voted and who has not and this is provided to the campaigns, so you can target GOTV.
Colin said...
I wonder if the Obama campaign somehow knows I voted early.
If they're doing GOTV properly, yes they do. They should have the list of registered voters in your precinct and know from the election workers who's voted early.
Drudge changed their headline. Kudos.
Is real joe telling us today or tomorrow?
@aunt karen
abolish state taxes? What would happen if that got passed???? How does stuff like that get on the ballot? Nobody likes paying taxes, but how do things get paid for without them?
I am fascinated by this kind of thing. At our last GE in the UK when I was a candidate for parliament(I came 2nd, damn), one of the people standing locally was a man who wanted to put a touch screen in every home so that people could vote on the issues of the day and politicians could be abolished. My question to him was: who decides what the issues of the day are? Surprise, surprise, he worked for a company that sold, you guessed it, touch screen technology.....
Real Joe promised us today, but then seemed to equivocate -- when he counted out "three days until the surprise," it landed on Monday. But then other times it was "Wait for the surprise on Tuesday."
So no, I don't know.
I keep waiting to grow out of this frightful curiosity, but with each passing year it is as resolute as ever.
mrs b-
They'd jack up property taxes an insane degree and cut back on local services.
You know, like New Hampshire.
Long-time lurker, first-time poster. The wife and I will be getting the vote out in Philly tomorrow. We've never volunteered for a campaign before, never even thought about it. I just don't see that enthusiasm in the McCain voters I know. I think I have more emotional energy invested in this election than in anything for a long time. I'm a high school teacher and I'm sick to my stomach of having to explain to my students that bin Laden and Saddam are not the same person and that Iraq did not destroy the WTC.
We've waited this long and come this far. Get down to your local Obama office and volunteer tomorrow. We cannot let this slip away.
So sad to hear about Toot. I'd like to think she died knowing he would be President.
just thought - maybe Real Joe's surprise is that there isn't one!
sorry, posting way too much in my excitement. Will go and get a nice cup of tea.
what I read on freerepublic makes me sick, I'm loosing all my faith in any kind of decency coming from these people. I really hope someone will talk about this in the media. We should copy the whole thread and send it to all the newspapers we can think of...
Mrs. B,
I am prepared, as ever, for disappointment.
Now if only I could bail on my students tomorrow, instead of them bailing on me...
What is with you people and real joe's surprise? He's just waiting to see if Obama flips Montana (or something comparable) and then he'll come on and say, "Surprise!"
WTF?
Or seeing as you're English/Irish/Welsh/Scottish, you might not know.
New Hampshire has no income/sales taxes. Therefore my in-laws were, at one point, paying 3x as much in property tax on a crappy 1.5 bedroom ski-condo in NH as they were paying on their 4 bedroom house outside of Boston.
Samule and others...
I would strongly encourage you to stop being so outraged at FreeRepublic and its ilk.
This is not news -- paranoid, petty fear-mongers have existed in many times and many places.
Instead, may I suggest that you do not read there? I am all for confronting "evil" where it appears, but it has never seemed like a worthwhile allocation of resources, emotional or otherwise, to deliberately court it. For similar reasons, I do not read along on KKK messageboards, nor am I obsessed with all the latest happenings in the Jihadi blogosphere. You have a choice, exercise it.
1.9%!!!!!!!
satenexe: beelzebub's wife after the divorce
new thread and polling update - McCain win% down to 1.9!!!
JMIMLC-
But but but... They have some funny shit on there.
Like... Did you know that Obama is black? I mean, come on. That's far out.
He's a muslin, too.
@ mason
English. Our local taxes at the moment nationally are all property taxes (set locally, in bands, based on the estimated value of your house in, I think, 1992). Very regressive form of taxation. Some of us want to switch to a form of local income tax. For some reason, rich people don't want us to do it.
Real Joe is Nate, Brett and Sean.
Mulerider is correct about wingnuts on the right AND the left- remember, PUMAs are(were?) democrats, and they are spewing some of the craziest, vilest BS about Obama on the interwebs. That said, nobody should look at FR or point anyone their way- after tomorrow, the echo-chamber effect is going to go past 11 there and at other extremist sites.
My heart goes out to the Obamas for their loss- that said, I'm going to be so supremely happy for all Americans Wednesday- even the freeptards!
Viva Obama! Viva 538! GOTV mofos!
Transition 1000 words
The real issue is not how well Obama or McCain might do state-by-state, but that we shouldn't have battleground states and spectator states in the first place. Every vote in every state should be politically relevant and equal.
The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC). The bill would take effect only when enacted by states possessing a majority of the electoral vote (270 of 538). All the electoral votes from those states would be awarded to the candidate with the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC).
The National Popular Vote bill has been approved by 21 legislative chambers (one house in CO, AR, ME, NC, and WA, and two houses in MD, IL, HI, CA, MA, NJ, RI, and VT). It has been enacted into law in Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, and Maryland. These states have 50 (19%) of the 270 electoral votes needed.
See http://www.NationalPopularVote.com
Thanks for visiting us Governor and supporting Senator Obama. If I were still living in Virginia, you'd have my vote.
Now, any chance we can get you to Georgia to support Jim Martin if there's a runoff? You make a great messenger for the party in purpling southern states.
Hehehe, anyone else noticed that on intrade.com McCain has moved into single digits??
Change is coming guys.
Just noticed that IBD/TIPP has O+5. Yesterday was O+2 IIRC. Finger on the scale?
In Ohio Look for this
Holmes, Stark, and Delaware CO’s if McCain is fewer than 60 percent in Holmes and Obama is up 8 or more in Stark and if Delaware is a split Obama wins.
My Condolences to the Obama Family “May your faith give us faith my your strength give us strength
Two things:
1. The first picture (of the bent I-70 exit sign) lacks all context and is insulting. It's in the middle of a huge construction zone (in Dayton, thus the planes on the overpass support). By focusing on the smashed-up sign, it reinforces the idea that Ohio is a dying state.
2. I read somewhere about a year ago that while more people voted in Ohio in '04, and many were Evangelicals trying to pass the "Defense of Marriage" Act, that those "extra" voters were split between the candidates at about the same rate as those who voted in '00. In other words, there were lots of extra Kerry voters too, and many of them also voted against the "DoM" Act.
No matter what happens today, at least I won't have to see that picture of Dayton anymore.
