Today we continue our Road to 270 series with the Peach State, Georgia.
ALWAYS ON OUR MIND, Georgia might be the Election Night shocker on two counts -- Presidential and Senatorial. There's always a shocker, and this would be the On the Road crew's nominee. FiveThirtyEight pulls into Atlanta early tomorrow. Bill Clinton won the state for Democrats in 1992 by 1%, and lost by the same margin four years later. Since native son Jimmy Carter was on the ballot, Democrats have found Georgia tough sledding. But with African-American turnout soaring to unprecedented levels, Georgia may be a state where the public polling models are off, and indeed Barack Obama has put last minute advertising resources into the state in an effort to both go over 400 electoral votes as well as help a rising tide lift Jim Martin's boat against Max Cleland-smearing incumbent Saxby Chambliss.
Key Demographics
Note: Factors colored in red can generally be thought to help McCain. Factors in blue can generally be thought to help Obama. Factors in purple have ambiguous effects. Except where otherwise apparent, the numbers next to each variable represent the proportion out of each 100 residents in each state who fall into that category. Fundraising numbers reflect dollars raised in the 2008 campaign cycle per eligible voter in each state. Figures for seniors and youth voters are proportions of all residents aged 18+, rather than all residents of any age. The figure for education reflects the average number of years of completed schooling for all adults aged 25+. The figure for same-sex households reflects the number of same-sex partner households as a proportion of all households in the state. The liberal-conservative index is scaled from 0 (conservative) to 100 (liberal), based on a Likert score of voter self-identification in 2004 exit polls. The turnout rates reflect eligible voters only. Unemployment rates are current as of June 2008.
What McCain Has Going For Him
Georgia is home to a large white evangelical base that identifies with "American" ancestry at a high clip, given that much of northern Georgia is in Appalachian territory. Not many Catholics live in Georgia, a demographic that shades Democratic, and self-identifying Republicans still outnumber Democrats. Bush won here by double digits twice, and bigger the second time. Moreover, Barack Obama had a sizeable ground operation here earlier in the general election, left a skeleton staff and a large volunteer base, and only now is getting back to the state with any kind of spending. As a southern state, the cultural tilt still works in McCain's favor; Democrats are still seen as the party that tried to let black people vote in the 60s, and that ruffled a lot of feathers. However, unlike neighboring Alabama and South Carolina, Georgia has more of an urban base and many young voters, so attitudes have shifted a bit quicker here than in other parts of the South, and Georgia is generally going to be the first state in the five-state Louisiana-South Carolina arc to go blue. McCain should have enough Republican votes to barely hang on, but look for Georgia to be tighter than the polls predict.
What Obama Has Going For Him
Only two states have more black voters than Georgia, and it appears a gigantic wave of individuals in the Obama-supporting demographic is brazenly attempting to exercise its Constitutional rights. Georgia has many young voters, more Starbucks than Walmarts, not many military vets by comparison, and a surprisingly high number of same-sex households. All of these factors help Obama, as does the lower number of senior voters (only three states have fewer). Obama likely has the benefit of a contended Senate race helping upticket, simply because we've seen overwhelmingly more energy on the Democratic organizing side this year. We expect to confirm ourselves tomorrow.
What To Watch For
It's entirely possible Georgia will give the Democratic Party its 60th Senate seat on Election Night, if Jim Martin beats Saxby Chambliss. All the House seats are pretty much safe, with incumbent Democrat Jim Marshall in central Georgia facing the toughest re-election in Georgia's Republican-gerrymandered districts. Republicans are on defense all across the board again this cycle, so if Marshall survived in 2006, he should pull it off again in 2008. If the polls close in the eastern time zone and the nets can't call Georgia for John McCain because it's "too close to call," we'll all know who the next President-Elect will be.

There's no way anything is settled Tuesday night, is there? The polling places in most states are going to be overwhelmed. I see this going another week, at least.
Just convinced a friend in Ohio to vote Obama. Yeah!
Second, maybe?
Obama leads in Mason-Dixon poll
"Democrat Barack Obama holds a slender lead in the neck-and-neck race for Florida’s 27 electoral votes, a prize Republican John McCain must have before he can claim the White House on Tuesday.
A survey conducted Wednesday and Thursday by Mason-Dixon Polling &
Obama leads in Mason-Dixon poll
Research shows Obama ahead 49 percent to 47 percent, with 7 percent of voters still undecided. The lead is well within the poll’s 4 percent margin of error.
It is also a reversal from the 46-44 lead McCain held last week in the same survey.
The poll of 625 likely voters shows Obama leading among crucial independents, 48-39."
With that Mason Dixen 3-point republican lean that means Obama has a steady +5 lead.

After what he did to Cleeland, a Martin victory here would be unbelievable.
Senate Spotlight: Georgia
thanks deadpixel-
go georgia. im hearing palin rant in the background and am feeling sickly
why cnn shows her again and again is beyond me.
Only a few more days before I will never have to hear the shrill, nasally voice of BibleBarbie on my answering machine again.
Emailing my GA friends to be sure to get out TODAY and vote! (and bring friends and neighbours)
Oh, Tuesday, please hurry up!
~FL PUMA
Turn FL Blue! Vote Alan Grayson in FL-08 District!
WV = trubp. The sound McCain makes when someone reads him the poll numbers while he's eating.

Who find the mistake? ;)
what about the "differential nonresponse" that jon cohen discusses in
his wapo article?
If anyone truly deserves to lose, it's Saxby Chamblis for what he did to Max Cleland. Evil evil evil.
This is great news!!!11 For Georgia Peaches!!111one1

It would sure be wonderful to see that arch-slimeball Saxby be put into permanent retirement! Truly a man without shame, almost on the level of GWB and Karl Rove....
Remember when people wondered if Obama would be able to win anywhere in the old confederacy? Well looks like Virginia is looking very good, North Carolina and Geogia in the possibility column. Obama is looking good for a potential big win.
IBD/TIPP

M 43.4
Had to turn the TV off. Non stop Palin Mc Cain rally's what is going on? So tired of hearing her screaching high pitched nauseating voice ranting about taxing people who make $42,000.
If the current polls are true and the profile of the electorate is being generally reflected in the early votin, I suspe4ct Obama can pick GA off.
GA, AZ, ND, MT, the lone NE district
all have potential to be "shockers"
and a handful have the potential of being true shockers, MS, SD, LA
This election is looking stable for an Obama mandate win. I'd say IN, MO, and MT are pure tossups, with AZ, GA, and ND in the "lean Republican" category and FL, NV, and NC leaning for Obama.
WV: forit: McCain's opinion on the political philosophy of George W. Bush.
"Only a few more days before I will never have to hear the shrill, nasally voice of BibleBarbie on my answering machine again."
Oh, we are going to hear her again, even after this Obama landslide. Haven't you heard? She is the new leader of the Republican Party.
This make me almost believe there is a God.
There's no way anything is settled Tuesday night, is there?
If Obama wins Pennsylvania, he's President. If Obama wins Nevada and New Hampshire, he's President.
If Obama wins Ohio, he's President. If he wins Florida, he's President. If he wins North Carolina, he's President. If he wins Indiana, he's President. If he wins Arizona, he's President.
The only way this isn't decided early is if all those states are too close to call or McCain wins.
@potion - I wish
2010 she'll be back, first as an unsuccessful Primary run, than 3rd party candidate.
A friend from NZ writes:
Strangely enough, New Zealand is in the middle of an election as well (8th November). The US elections are not getting that much less than ours in our news, however. New Zealand is such a small country, that what happens in the US is very important.
Sean, thanks for the updates from the road. They are interesting.

Could have gone with:
"Leavin' on the midnight train to Georgia"
or even better, from the MAN - Ray
"Georgia, Georgia just an old sweet song...keeps Georgia on my mind." :)
Palin speaks with such strength and confidence. It's hard to deny her appeal.
She is also politically very savvy, delaying her speech so she could step over Biden's and make sure he got no coverage. Only CNN carried him live. I am sure in FL NO ONE did he is a NONENTITY.
WV: sterss -- What the stoke-prone Biden feels when he realizes he is getting bested by a dame!
Larry - great point. There's just so many paths to Obama victory. There would have to be massive nationwide vote fraud to confuse matters... Not that I think that's totally impossible, mind you.
Power loves power and this despicable Bush admin. leak of this aunt of Obama that he barely knows biz shows that they will do anything to win.
CHENEY + MCCAIN.
One day of real camapigning left, tomorrow America watches football. Monday is it!
"There's no way anything is settled Tuesday night, is there? The polling places in most states are going to be overwhelmed. I see this going another week, at least."
This thing will be settled by 9:00 pm Eastern, 11/4
" PeteKent said...

Yes it's almost as hard to deny her appeal as it is to deny the appeal of the great DICK CHENEY.
No seriously. You have to be kidding right? Hard to deny the appeal of Sarah Palin? The least popular VP candidate in history? SERIOUSLY?
This is kinda off topic, but can someone explain where all the comments go after about 200 have gone up? I see threads that end at 175-225 comments but the front page often says there are hundreds more...and I don't know what to click on in order to see them. In this case, I am referring to Nate's "Trick Or Treat" post from last night, which has 800 comments...except I can't see the last 600 or so.
How many PeteKent are there? My favorite PeteKent is the one who insisted that the "Fundamental shift" from Obama to McCain had occured.
If Obama wins PA plus one of FL or OH, its over. We should know by 10 PM Eastern the latest. The FL Panhandle is in the Central timezone, so they can't call FL until 9 Eastern. PA and OH close at 8, I think. We could know ny 830!
How exciting for Obama and his supporters!
Will his Aunt be watching from a jail cell?
Lou Dobbs is seeking to have her deported before Tuesday.
It does seem that GA will be to-close-to-call. Look at the 1.99MM early votes, and assume the following split:
35% African American
(5M 93O 2other)
60% White
(67M 30O 3other) I pegged a slightly higher Obama share of white votes, assuming a higher motivation for Obama's white supporters to turn out that the overall white voter pool
5% All other
(40M 55O 5other)
That is Obama leading 53.3 - 44.0, or 185K votes.
There will have probably another 2MM votes casted on the election day. How large a margin do you think McCain has to win, in order for the networks not to label this one "to-close-to-call", at the onset of poll closing? Something close to a 400K or so vote margin? a 20% win on the election day?
That is, if the exit poll for the election dya does not have McCain up by 20%, the network will not, mark my words, will NOT call this outright for McCain. They will have to keep this one as to-close-to-call for a while.
Constant coverage of Palin is great for Obama/Biden.
She's such a failure that she's managed to be more of an anchor on McCain than Bush & Cheney.
Thanks to dave brodbeck, we now have this link:

It's getting totally slammed right now for a GREAT reason.
Two Montreal radio personalities pranked Palin into thinking she was talking to Sarkozy . . .

SEAN
I have been looking forward to your analysis of GA
good job covering FL the past few days
have a great time in Hotlanta
just as it looks solid for Barack to flip FL, it truly does appear that they also have Georgia on their mind
I believe that we will have a BLUE eastern seaboard on 11/4, as the rising tide will wash the red out of every state [except for SC only comming in 'close'] from ME-FL
and then you got the annual battle in JAX [which is really So GA] where as I type this the GA Bulldawgs are starting their highly anticipated throw-down with the FL Gators !!!
catch that football game if you can
"Palin speaks with such strength and confidence. It's hard to deny her appeal."
Only one problem; she is a pathological liar. Most folks don't find that appealing.

Does Georgia have early elections?
I just convinced 2 friends in Ohio and 1 in North Carolina who had never voted before to go to the polls and cast their votes for Obama.
GO OBAMA!
New Zealand has their own Joe the Plumber
I don't think Republicans get it. It's good for Democrats that Palin is all over TV. Look at any single poll- Americans HATE her. Her negatives are through the roof. She is not viewed as being ready for president- nor VP in the last poll. She doesn't know what the VP does. She believes humans lived with dinosaurs. She doesn't believe in global warming. She doesn't understand what the first amendment actually says with her last comment. She lies, she is unethical (no question about it- even though she has lied about it), and she is divisive.
All her yelling, and divisiveness hurts the GOP. America has had enough of this type of politics- we know Bush policies and the Republican party is not good for America. Saying there's a real and fakje america, and that some love this country more than others won't help the GOP for two reasons. One, that type of politics isn't as effective post-Bush. And two, it worked for Bush when Rep=Dem or Rep>Dem for the base- but this year is different (only Zogby doesn't get that). There are more dems than repubs, if you try to solidify the base by picking Palin it will work for the GOP vote- but it ruins Independent and Dem switching vote. That is why she has tanked.
Pete-
Palin not only has no appeal to me, she repulses me and her lack of knowledge infuriates me.
Obama will win 385 EV. Stop stressing over PA, VA, CO, NC, IN, GE, FL, and OH - he'll win them all. It's called a landslide, people. Stop worrying and start acting like this is going to happen, get out and vote, take 3 people with you and MAKE IT HAPPEN!! Don't hope that the Election Fairy sticks a win under your pillow - GET OFF YOUR A@$ !!
McCain will lose. So will Palin. And, no, Palin is not a viable 2012 candidate, unless 2/3rd of the nation has a lobotomy between now and then. Please, there are enough idiots in this country to elect her this year, so if it doesn't happen, it won't happen, no matter how many extreme makeovers she has. She is not qualified, and nothing she will do will make her such.
Turnout will be the story. I wouldn't be surprised if election results will be delayed because of long lines in key states.
The big turnout story, however, will be WOMEN for Obama. It will overshadow Palin so much, she will become marginalized even more than she is (if possible).
Stupid America * (see definition below)will recede to their mudhuts and televangelists, clutching their gun, butter and religion. To move forward, these voters are not the patriots to take us there. These voters pull us back when we get cocky. Cocky is over. It's time to for real work, something Stupid America doesn't know how to do.
Obama has the potential to fundamentally change this nation for the better. McCain has no such ability. He couldn't make an independent decision if Sarah's life depended on it. He's is a unqualified as she is. Give the new guy a shot! He's smart, he knows what he wants to do, and he has a reason to execute the plan. Can't say the same for McCain - he's not smart (see ranking at US Naval), he doesn't know what he WANTS to do, he knows why he doesn't want to do the other guys idea, and he's not motivated (he likely dies before the next election).
What amazes me is when interviewed, McCain supporters actually say that they won't vote for Obama because he's a: communist, socialist, terrorist, eceterist. These people couldn't define any of those terms, nor have the intellectual curiosity to find out for themselves. And the news organizations EQUATE the legitimacy of that opinion to one that is more reasoned, researched, and balanced. CNN - stop that bullshit, and call people on the carpet. Why not ask these idiots, do you know what the word "communist" means? If they do, then print it - if not, stop making the rest of us have to listen to that meaningless crap!
My rant is over. GO BACK TO WORK MAKING THIS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY FILLED WITH GREAT PEOPLE AND A GREAT FUTURE WHAT IT SHOULD BE!
* Stupid People - defined as those people too blinded by their prejudice or anger to see clearly the choices before them; not intellectually challenged, just impaired by their thinking minds.
Josh: Thanks for that. That's what I was doing last night but I was hoping there was an easier way. :)

any states polls coming out ?
The freepers are running out of pollsters they can hang on to. The tipp poll is the only one they trusted because it had it close, now they say keep him under 50 and McCain wins.
It`s downright scary, these people are nuts. Obama will be hounded before he even gets sworn in. The hard right will never give the guy a chance.
Anyway tuesday night turn in to fox news when they declare Obama president elect, the looks on their faces will be worth it.
Hopefully Hannity will be there so I can see him have a breakdown!
Yup, Palin got spoofed and it comes out Monday!
Way to hire an idiot for a pro's job John!!!!
From what I understand, Atlanta is the cultural hub of the South, and it attracts a lot of high-education, liberal voters from the neighboring states. Atlanta is actually a very nice town; I was surprised how much I liked it upon visiting. As the city continues to grow and attract more non-redneck types, I expect it will be to the state of Georgia what Chicago is to the state of Illinois. Looking forward to a large, fast-growing, perpetually blue state for decades to come! (if not this election than soon).
if Mason-Dixon has BHO up, he must be up. They have the most repub bias this election.
zyangunc:
Surely the exit polls will take early voting into account? Otherwise they'll be pretty worthless when so many people have already voted before election day.
Being pranked by two DJs is great news for John McCain.
There are quite a few in jokes there, the guy playing Sarkozy got the names of the Canadian PM and Quebec premiere wrong (on purpose, using Quebec comedians' names) and said Sarkozy's American affairs advisor was Johnny Halliday....
I cannot STAND Sarah Palin and I know I am just one of many. She is infuriatingly ignorant and divisive. I do not believe she is very intelligent and any intelligence she does have she wastes by being totally uninterested in the world.
This is someone who seeks power for power's sake. I do not believe she has any vision for America other than maybe to make it more bible-y. Maybe for Evangelicals that's enough but for the rest of us it makes her even more frightening.
Palin is everything wrong with America.
She makes me believe that McCain/Palin would be an even bigger disaster than Bush/CHENEY.
Time until first polls close - 75 hours, 15 minutes.
Probable time until winner declared - 79 hours.
Early voting and exit polls:
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/29/early-voting-and-exit-polls/
exit polls will take into account early votes
Bob Barr's presence might make a big difference here. I imagine his crowd will be largely made up of regular white voters who are unhappy with Bush but are not happy about voting for Obama. In other states, these voters might break to McCain but they have an alternative in Barr.
I'm not optimistic for Martin's chances--best case scenario seems to be a runoff, and his chances in a runoff have to be less than in the general election, right?

real joe, when are you going to tell us your big surprise?
To think that those of you who post regularly on this blog represent more than 10% of the country is folly.
Palin is a heroine to 40% of the people and she will inherit their affection and be the standard bearer of their discontent during any Obama administration.
Her ability to rebound from the current low standings she has been handed due to unprecedently negative media coverage that sought to destroy her is testament to her strength. She is the real deal and the people will ultimately coalesce around her amidst the wreckage of an Obama administration.
I will be posting my election summary sometime this weekend – stay tuned!

petekent - you are unbelievably full of crap.
If the GOP goes the Sarah Palin path they will be the party of ONLY the loony fringe right wing for some time to come.
She is receiving unprecedentedly negative coverage because there has never been a major party candidate as ignorant and as unqualified as her before. She has set a whole new low in American politics.
And no it's not just those of us who are very liberal (which I am) who think that. I've heard many very "average Amerian" type people say they too are "scared of Sarah Palin" - hell I've even heard people who are voting for McCain say that.
If you think we are going to get an early call on CNN (who are cautious and in my opinion the only ones who are guaranteed not to fall into an early incorrect call- they waited on Missouri in the primaries; look to FOX NEWS for the fastest call they are trigger happy). Anything under 5% in polling indicators they are going to wait for results. Running the counting process, whatever it is, does not start until after the last voter has left the precinct. Maybe early voting will start tabulating at poll closing but the people doing that are probably the head honcho's for a city or county so they'd be diverted by any issue. If you are in line at closing time you may vote so the start of tabulating could be delayed by the lines.
Reporting of tabulated results in most states with an urban rural divide is going to start out as favoring John McCain so it won't be in favor of a quick Obama call. Thats because the smallest and quickest precincts tend to be rural. Well run problem free large urban/suburban will follow and last will be some of the largest most problem plagued/long lined urban precincts. If a state can't be called by polling CNN will wait for those numbers.
This is the pattern in Missouri, VA and lots of states. Webb couldn't be called til about midnight in VA in 2006. Don't look at the poll closing times and guarantee an early call even if Obama pulls out a decent but not overwhelming number in a traditional red state. They might wait on VA because their early exit poll results in 2004 had Kerry ahead. They needed the complete exit poll + actual numbers to realize it was +5 Bush. It took an hour or two to call.

Obama probably won't be declared the winner quickly on Tuesday night. To do that, he'd have to be ahead in the key states by more than 10% in the exit polls. If he leads by, say, 5% in the exit polls in Ohio, Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania - (which seems very likely) - all of those states will be declared as too close to call because the networks won't want to make any mistakes this time.
So it could still be a long night even if Obama ends up winning easily.
The Mason-Dixon poll has definite right-wing leanings. If they have Obama ahead by 2 in Florida, you can bet it's really closer to 4 or 5. Rasmussen is also quite suspect. They are heavily involved with Fox, and you know where those people stand.
As far as Georgia goes, the state still has too many right-wing reactionaries and yahoos for Obama to win. However, it may be close, say, McCain by 1-2 points.

Palin is at least as educable as Barack Obama. I think she does a great job on the stump and has a lot of common sense things to say.
The hidden Palin vote may be greater than Bradley Effect. I think a lot of working class white women see her as a kind of cultural heroine and while they won't admit it, find her and her messy but cohesive family irresistible.
If Obama fails, she will seem like a Prophetess!
Its a well known fact that the only reason Saxby won his Senate seat was because of the evil, nasty tactics he took against Max Cleland in 2002 (Cleland, in my opinion, is one of the best senators and individuals Georgia has produced). Cleland voted against the Patriotic Act because, as he said, he didn't go to war and lose 3 of his limbs for democratic process just to have civil liberties of the public stripped away in fear.
Martin is a great candidate and individual, and would make a fine senator for GA. He, like Cleland, served in Vietnam. Saxby opted to dodge the draft and claim he had bad knees from a football injury (Personally, I don't think anyone who has never been to war and seen the hardships of war first hand, should ever be allowed to make decisions about sending other people to war.)
However, the same charge haunts Martin and is used in attack ads, in this election and the previous elections Martin ran. 2 children died while he was commissioner of the Dept of HR. The cause of those deaths were because of the mistakes of caseworkers, who had no direct interaction with Martin. However, he has been held responsible. The deaths of those kids was very sad, but not Martin's fault by any means.
This was the claim that caused Martin to lose his last race - Lt. Governor of GA.
And Saxby is using this claim in some of his TV ads. Its all about wording the information in misleading ways for Saxby. Another sign that Saxby will scrap the bottom of the barrel to win this election.
Sadly, the DNC and DPoGA have not been assisting with funds for Martin's campaign until recently. Well over a month ago, Saxby started airing TV ads. It wasn't until very recently that Martin has started showing his TV ads. The DNC and DPoGA should have been putting money into Martin's campaign from the start. If Martin loses his senate race, I will blame the party for not showing the support they should have.
I can only hope and pray that Martin wins this senate race. Georgia cannot afford 6 more years of Saxby Chambliss.
Sarah Palin is intellectually deficient and suffers from delusions of grandeur. Combine this with her unbridled ambition and bizarre religious beliefs and you have one dangerous political force. If the GOP embraces this jack-ass they will be in the wilderness for 30 years.
Cast your vote for "skinny arms" Obama... ahahahhaha
Those of you who think the election will be announced when the polls close in VA at 7:00 pm EST, keep in mind that the networks won't start calling stuff until the polls close on the WEST coast, around 11:00 pm EST.
It'll go something like this:
At 11:01 the networks will call the entire east coast except SC and GA for Obama. SC goes McCain. GA is too close to call, but will go Obama for anyone who stays up past 3:00 am.
McCain, in one last attempt to be classy, will wait until the polls close in Alaska at midnight EST before conceding, but it will be a long, painful hour for him, with the map turning blue in a few unexpected spots and a lot of red states being surprisingly close.
It seems that after the daily tracking polls of Gallup, Rasmussen, Research 2000, IBD/Tipp and Diageo/Hotline all went up slightly for Obama today, even Drudge is embarrassed about last night's Zogby fiasco and has purged his page accordingly. LOL. Nail in Zogby's coffin!

Is there anyone waiting in the wings who can rescue the GOP from short term oblivion. They need an Arnie who was born here.
rodlik: um...do I really need to go there?
GA Arithmetic:
GA has 30% AA eligible voters. Maybe 45% of them voted in 04. Probably 80% will vote this year, with all the increase for Obama, an increase of 35%. So that's 35% x 0.3 = 10.5% bump in Obama numbers, above what the polls are showing (assuming the polls do not take this AA increased turnout into account), due only to increased AA turnout, not counting the other highly energized Obama groups -- i.e., Dems, youth, Starbucks clientele, who will also turn out in droves. GA shows 4% lead for McCain. This 10+% Obama bump will win it for him. You heard it here 1st: President Hussein calls GA for Obama!
Pete-
Obama went to Columbia and Harvard and was the editor of the Harvard LAw Review. Obama teaches constitutional law at a top 5 law school! There is NO comparison between Obama and Palin.
@Henry - "bizarre religious beliefs"
I thought everyone who loved Obama was supposed to be tolerant. Oh Palin believes something different than you? She must be labeled bizarre then. So much for tolerant and embracing all ideas and opinions...

I bet Zogby will claim Obama had a big Saturday in an effort to keep his numbers steady. Otherwise his margin will continue to shrink while all other trackers are going the other way.

"Her ability to rebound from the current low standings she has been handed due to unprecedently negative media coverage that sought to destroy her is testament to her strength. She is the real deal and the people will ultimately coalesce around her amidst the wreckage of an Obama administration."
Her negative coverage and appeal has everything to do with the fact that she is a fucking retarded, mean-spirited fundamentalist that doesn't understand concepts that third graders does.
She is ignorant, and proud of it. Her approval rating directly corresponds to the percentage of drooling idiots in this country. There is no way she will ever sway intelligent independent, which means she will never win a national office.
That her approval rating are below the national poll numbers for McCain is scary. That means people think she is unqualified, yet are still voting for the crypt keeper who represents the worst of Bush and Cheney in one wrinkled package.
Seeing Chambliss defeated would be analogous to seeing Santorum defeated in 2006.
I was thinking for a while that Stevens would be 2008's Santorum, but I think Stevens is more like 2008's DeLay, in that he brought all his (criminal) problems on himself.
Chambliss is just a piece of crap who needs to be sent packing, like Santorum before him.

There is alimit on religious beliefs as pres - they must be secondary to your ability to think through and analyze the problem. If your ONLY approach to problem solving is praying, well, not so good.
IT is also scary to have an evangelical (who thinks the end of the world is near, and that ending it is good) on the nuclear button.
Religious beliefs don't matter much, but they do when they interfere with important decision making processes.

How long before the McSame camp starts talking about 'bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Canada'? (Reminds me of Canadian Bacon-A movie with promise but falls a little short). *Ominous voice come on TV-"Did you know that 90% of the Canadian population is amassed within 100 miles of the American border?"
By tomorrow, Palin will be pointing out that Canadians are not real Americans.
I remember clearly election night 1976 – it took until almost 3 AM Eastern for the Nets to call AL (or was in MS?) for Carter and hence the election. It was a tough four years, not only for me, but for America.
It was then with great hope and excitement, but a good deal of anxiety, that I looked forward to Election Night 1980. I remember I made a big pot of coffee and had a notebook full of charts and graphs and stats I had gleaned from the available print media. I was ready to read the tea leaves along with Brokaw, Jennings, Cronkite and Co. By 830 it was over. I was so disappointed; I had been denied my evening of suspense. I think with Obama it will be the same. If these polls are right he will swamp McCain and take PA and either FL and OH and it will be over but for the counting by 9 PM.
You can enjoy the breadth of his victory, waiting anxiously for the returns in MT and AZ.
Me? I will be packing for Switzerland!
voice of reason:
I thought that each state is called when that state's polling ends provided that the exit polls show a winner with a clear margin - (usually above 10%). So if the Virginia exit polls show, for example, that Obama has won the state by more than 10%, they'll call the state for Obama at 7pm Eastern. They won't wait for the west coast at 11pm Eastern.
petekent, Switzerland is where the 'liberal elites' live..
"By tomorrow, Palin will be pointing out that Canadians are not real Americans."
Snark + Zing = sning!
Regarding Palin's future:
A large part of her current appeal comes from her newness/"freshness" in my opinion. Obviously, that can't sustain her in the future. For the time being, I think many of her supporters are willing to look beyond her fairly obvious shortcomings, but this won't be true forever. Therefore, she'll need to redefine herself somewhat to be effective.
It's possible she can do this. But she has her work cut out for her. Let's face it: her accomplishments in Alaska are suspect and riddled with suggestions of impropriety. In other words, she doesn't have much of a record to run on.
Nor does she have ideas to run on. Nothing we've seen from her so far suggests that she's given any serious thought to any matter of importance. Listening to her speak suggests that she's repeating things that she's heard more than it suggests she truly understands what she's talking about.
Now, it's possible that these things can change. Maybe she can return to Alaska and do something positive there. Maybe she can put some thought into a few issues instead of rejecting intellectualism completely.
My point is simply that for her to be a viable candidate going forward, something has to change. After she loses on Tuesday, the shine will begin to wear off and unless she shows us something different, even many conservatives will begin to see her as a symbol of what *doesn't* win instead of the future of a conservative movement that can appeal to a majority of voters.

presidenthussein,
"GA has 30% AA eligible voters. Maybe 45% of them voted in 04."
AA turnout in 2004 was 72% of 1.1million eligible
2008 there are 1.6million eligible AA voters
"Probably 80% will vote this year.."
Yes, this is possible since 699,000AA have voted early. If AA turnout is 80% of 1.6 million Obama wins GA, even 72% of 1.6 million probably does it.

Palin's response to Montreal radio:
"Gov. Palin received a phone call on Saturday from a French Canadian talk show host claiming to be French President Nicholas Sarkozy," emailed spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt. "Gov. Palin was mildly amused to learn that she had joined the ranks of heads of state, including President Sarkozy, and other celebrities in being targeted by these pranksters. C'est la vie."
WV: eakers--what the more polite Palins staffers said when they heard about the phony call
Not only will Georgia go Blue, it may never go Red again. The new coalition of voters will ensure victory in 2012 and every election in the future. The powerless have felt the strength of their own voting power this year. With the knowledge that they sent the Republicans home empty handed, they will vote in greater numbers in all future elections. Pollsters will have to crunch new numbers for GA. Politicians will have to change their strategies in the future. How many college campuses are in GA? How many people are on cell phones and, due to the economy, have shut down their land lines?
They used to call Georgia a part of the "New" South. But that call was a wee bit premature. It was just a matter of the old South doing the same racist politics with a new, smiling face. 2008 will be known forever more as the dawning of the modern day New South, where young people and minorities are given the full measure of respect normally reserved for old white guys. Minorities understand so well the politics of name calling and lies, and we can see right through it. Saxby is seen as a racist - a bigot with the power to implement his bigotry. That's why Jim Martin will win, along with Obama. It's a new day.
Palin was probably shocked by the use of the word phoque...
Obama v. Palin...um, yeah. I can only imagine the press coverage if Obama had attended 6 colleges in 5 years and graduated with a Bachelors in Journalism (instead of Magma Cum Laude from Harvard), talked like Snoop Dog and had a 16 yo unwed pregnant daughter...we would not even be having this conversation.
Sarah Palin is a JOKE, women can't stand her, she used the VP debate like a Hooters interview (you betcha, wink!) and is good for nothing more than spouting the GOP talking points. This is a woman who could not list ONE SINGLE newspaper that she reads. She also could not list one Supreme Court decision...she is a train wreck and I HOPE that she is the GOP leader in the coming years which will allow the party to continue it's race to obscurity!!
"How is she mean-spirited?"
Are you joking or are you really this blind?
At least you didn't claim she is intelligent.
justsomeguy - "Religious beliefs don't matter much"
Don't matter much?! I believe you need to go and read some history books. To think that religious doesn't matter! Religion has always mattered. Religion is the very reason that our founding fathers moved here in the first place. Not to mention that you insult everyone who still has religious beliefs in this country.
You can talk about separation of church and state, and how the government should respect the beliefs of it's citizen, but to say that "religion doesn't matter much" is at best a very untrue statement.

If you think about it for a nanosecond, not all beliefs are created equal. Some are downright nutty. And believing that dinosaurs and men walked the earth together, for example, is off the charts nuts. It's what happens when religion clouds, instead of illuminates, a person's mind.
Palin's "beliefs" of this sort demonstrate an ability to suspend critical thought that is or should be terrifying to any U.S. citizen, no matter his or her party affiliation. We need brains in the Oval Office, as our history so poignantly suggests.
"Her ability to rebound from the current low standings she has been handed due to unprecedently negative media coverage that sought to destroy her is testament to her strength. She is the real deal and the people will ultimately coalesce around her amidst the wreckage of an Obama administration."

McCain knew that Palin had no real experience but appealed to the base.
The knew the media would call her on her experience as they should.
So the strategy needed to avoid exposing here tremendous lack of experience was to disarm the media and put them on the defense. Cry sexism and unfair attacks on her family so the media would be afraid to call her out.
It backfired. It only took her to open her mouth for people to see her as she really is. Simply put, inexperienced and not ready to be vice president or president.
Yet the republican base is so repulsed at the idea of a black man being president, they would risk their lives and put her in office because she's "one of them".
A couple of questions...
Specifically, how does Palin plan to reform washington?
If something should happen to John McCain as president, how would she handle the two wars we have going on. what does she know about current condidtions on the ground to make the best decisions?
I could go on but I don't hear specifics.
I am totally confident that Joe Biden could step in at any moment and repsond appropriately without training.
Overall, I resent being told I'm so partisan or sexist (which I'm not, I'm an independent) that I can't see how she could be a benefit to our nation. It is an insult to my intelligence.
She reminds me of Janet Jackson...attractive, great performer with stage appeal but she couldn't carry a note if her life depended on it. Her voice is manufactured just as Palin's readiness to lead the country is manufactured.
In the end. No real substance.

I don't imagine Biden would have fallen for something like this. His response probably would have been, "Is this a joke?"
Georgia does represent the new new South. The Repugs have been depending on the racist vote for so long, they are just beginning to realize that their racist vote base is beginning to die off. To that I say "Bye, bye".

"Example of Palin's bizarre religious beliefs: She has demons cleansed from her by a "Christian" witch doctor...Shall I go on? There is plenty more.... "
Remember John McCain had the class not to go after Rev Wright and his bizarre views. he left Farrakhan alone as well. One thing about McCain he did not want to win a scorched earth victory.
No one will ever care about another candidate's church again.
The hidden Palin vote may be greater than Bradley Effect. I think a lot of working class white women see her as a kind of cultural heroine and while they won't admit it, find her and her messy but cohesive family irresistible.
No. No. Working class white women won't see her as a cultural hero at all. You see that trick she does when she tries to cover up a mistake by going all cutesy and using words like 'mavericky'? The reason women liked Hilary is that they could see her as a mate, the woman who would pick them up and give sensible advice when their husbands had gone off with someone else.
Women don't like Palin because they see her as the ignorant trollop who does her best to get their husbands attention away from them.
Not a very feminist analysis, but that's pretty much what's going on in the minds of women who don't see themselves as feminists but do see themselves as home makers.
Feminists don't like Palin because she's making a virtue out of ignorance.
regralin - oh, I give up.

Who said that? You know a mass strawman is as invalid as using it against a single person, don't you?

There are lots of people as smart or smarter than Obama. Too bad the republicans couldn't find one.

From PeteKent:
"Why do so many insist that no one else can be as smart as Obama?"
You're confused. People are saying that he's smarter than Palin. Whatever you want to say about Palin, it's hard to argue that she has a great intellect. If she does, she's managed to hide it--not just during the last 2 months, but during her tenure as governor and mayor, too.
"He is a very good speaker, but he is not that smart. Shewd, but not smart. I can tell you that he kinows nothing about economics and his views of the Constitution are warped and when they finally come to light will come to haunt him"

No offense intended. My apologies. I know its not a perfect comparison, but I do think its generally true that Illinois is a more conservative state without Chicago, although there are some liberal outposts scattered throughout :)
I also want to report that I went on my first canvass today here in FL! Actually, I went on two canvasses. Nobody told me its so exhausting! I may be getting into the bottle of jimmy beam tonight!
Its also good to see busloads of volunteers from all over the south arriving at our Tallahassee office to pitch in. Its great timing too, because Joe Biden just announced a surprise visit for tomorrow morning.
75 hours until we win this thing!!!
OTF,
Thanks for the numbers. If GA AA turnout was 72% in 04 (pretty amazing given that the state was 57% overall and there wasn't much in it for them that year) then it will be 85% this year, with a higher % going blue. So, right, GA is in the bag.
PeteKent said...
Why do so many insist that no one else can be as smart as Obama?
No one is insiting on that. Probaly 10% of the people is as smart or smarter. The point is about Palin, generously, only 5% of all people are dumber then she is.
"One thing about McCain he did not want to win a scorched earth victory."
Is that why he used the terms terrorist, muslim, dangerous to describe Obama and he and his ignorant running mate have riled up the trailer park electorate to the point they are screaming for the death of Obama?
Good thing he doesn't want a "scorched earth victory". I guess he is going for a "scorched earth loss".
He is kind of like an insane ex-boyfriend: "If I can't be president, then no one can!"

Cora,
Do you think after all these months I cannot read the polls? Can the Bradely Effect really be as deep as it needs to be to elect John McCain? Even I don't think so, even as I hope so!
If exit polling indicates an Obama landslide in the eastern time states, it will be all over early. But since the GOP has invested heavily in vote suppression, I expect McCain not to concede until he finds out how well his allies in the Secretary of State offices have done this time around. By the time we have Colo. results we should know if it's close or a walk.
"I am waiting for an example of mean-spritedness."
How about calling northern virginians unamerican?
How about when she doesn't disapprove of people calling for Obama's death.
OK, you truly are blind, and retarded.
Voice of Reason,
Networks can call any state as soon as that states polls are closed. Indiana and Kentucky close at 6, and if there is a clear winner in one of those states, it could be called then. (Interesting to see how long the Presidential result in Indiana and the Senate result in Kentucky will take to be called.)
The critical hours could be between 7ish (when Virginia closes) and 8:30, when most of the eastern seaboard will have closed and many of them will have been called. We will get a sense of how things are going by which states are being called and which are holding on.
Whether or not GA goes blue on Tuesday (which I think is a definite possibility), the democrats have helped build and solidify something that has been brewing in the Peach State for a few years now. Atlanta being filled with universities and young progressives (not to mention about half of the state population and growing RAPIDLY) will help create a new democratic Georgia. Regardless of this years outcome, Obama and the democrats have made an enormous investment in the future. Georgia has all of the makings of a democratic stronghold for years to come.
PeteKent: What is in that kool-aid that you are drinking?
Pete,
"Doesn't see America like you and I do"
"Palling around with terrorists"
"That one"
Hearing numerous cries of "terrorist", "kill him", etc at rallies and saying nothing.
Obama goes out of his way to tell people not to boo McCain and always acknowledges McCain's service to our country. McCain and particularly Palin stand idly by while their rallies turn into frothing anger bordering on a lynch mob.
This is not arguable. The candidates don't hate Obama, but many of their supporters do, and they're allowing that hate to fester.
Markymark -
IN and KY will NOT be called at 6 ET. Why? Because some precincts in both states stay open an hour more (on CT), and the networks will not make a call until all are closed.
This applies to several other states, most importantly FL (most close at 7, panhandle open til 8).
They DO show actually reported results, sometimes give hints at to what the early results mean.
What term to you use to describe a woman who brings her kids out with her before a hockey game to reduce the boo-ing?
" and his views of the Constitution are warped and when they finally come to light will come to haunt him"
Name one.
Looking forward to Sean and Brett hitting Georgia! When they went to Florida, I thought they were giving us a miss.
You've got to wonder about the crossovers in these demographics... Do you know how many black, female veterans in same-sex households there are here in GA? ;)
Chambliss, incidentally, just got even more odious: he's warning his supporters that "The other folks are voting". Seriously. Dear god, could he be any more clueless if he tried?
About the runoff potential in the Georgia Senate race, I would say normally it would not be good for the Democratic candidate. But if the Democrats knew that this would be their 60th vote in the Senate, that could motivate a large turnout for the runoff race.

Clinton had won already, GOP came out much more strongly in runoff,

Speaking as a University of Chicago student, I can tell you that Sarah Palin would be laughed out of any classroom here as a student, never mind as a professor. Every time I hear the "Palin is just like Obama" argument it just sounds utterly ridiculous.
Grace Notes
There is no doubt that McCain ran a respectful campaign.
The two highest grace notes of the past few months have belonged to McCain. His congratulatory commercial the night of Obama's nomination and his excellent speech at the Al Smith Dinner in which he recognized with conviction the specialness of Obama's place in history and how we all as Americans must stand in pride and awe over it.
I don't think Obama beat either of those two moments for all his cotton candy pretty rhetoric.
W Ver: ovoutya – a word coined by Radical Feminists to enhance the “otherness” and “foreign body” nature of anything relating to female participation in reproduction and the making of a baby, a fetus, a “thing” that is hers to destroy virtually at her whim.
PK--
I fail to see how it is "intellectually dishonest" to call a belief that has NO basis in fact whatsoever "nutty". Maybe you mean "intellectually snobby", or something. Whatever you mean, you are wrong, and you know it. "Quaint" is just a code word embarrassed conservatives use to explain away deeply irrational "beliefs" of their own kind.
At best, it's "quaint" if Joe the Plumber believes it--the consequences of his belief to us all are nil. It's something far more disturbing if a person with the power to make decisions that affect us all believes it. Again, the capacity to suspend critical thought in this way is downright frightening.
And, just to give you a heads up--Bush is crafty, but dumb, incurious and mentally lazy (and he manages to be all those things as a scion of astonishing privilege and opportunity, education at the best schools, etc.) Palin is the same, albeit with much less opportunity.
But Obama is crafty AND smart, thoughtful and well educated. Unlike our current president, he doesn't substitute "belief" for critical thought because it's easier to do so. It is simply impossible to have achieved what Obama has academically without having serious wattage upstairs.
You don't like this, but it is true. Much like the polling discussed here.
For Barack Obama to win Georgia he needs the AA vote to be 30% of the electorate. You know what portion of the electorate AA's are now? 37 PERCENT! That is UNPRECEDENTED, the turnout will trump all the polls and with it, we will win GA and shock everyone on election night. Bank on that shit.
Only two states have more black voters than Georgia, and it appears a gigantic wave of individuals in the Obama-supporting demographic is brazenly attempting to exercise its Constitutional rights.
...I'll admit it, I lol'd. (Yes, really.) Definitely the best line in an OTR piece.
That said...from what I'm reading (on 538 and a bit on Politico), I'm not quite holding out hope that McCain and Chambliss will have their asses handed to them. Certainly, it'd be delicious schadenfreude if they did get their asses handed to them in Georgia, of all places.
On the other hand, I think 538 may be selling GA-Sen a bit short. Chambliss is a one-term incumbent, right? Meaning he was elected at the height of Republican feeling; at the time, we were only 14 months removed from September 11. (Not to mention, the effect was most noticeable...you know...outside of the Mid-Atlantic.) Without the entire meme of "ZOMG REPUBLICANS WILL KEEP YOU SAFE FROM TURRISTS" and a black presidential candidate, it may likely be that African-Americans (who do vote straight-ticket Democrat most of the time) were being undersampled for the Senate polls.
WV: panster. What I'm hoping Obama and Martin will be in Georgia.
Im a grande blanco Obama supporter who moved to GA 12 years ago from CT. Obviously i would love to see the D's make an impression here - but frankly i really don't see it.
The one caveat might be that there is substantial support for Libertarian causes here, radio host Neal Boortz is VERY popular. I could see this pulling from Republican's numbers, but with everyone reporting how close this race will be i find it unlikely that those Republican's who might have voted Libertarian would do so if the race is that tight.
God willing though...there is hope.

If the belief in god is rational and not just made up, how come at least 70% of people in the world are wrong about what form that god takes? Is Hinduism correct about there being either many different forms of the same god, one god venerated above others, or in fact no god depending on what particular parts you pay attention to for example?

The hidden Palin vote may be greater than Bradley Effect. I think a lot of working class white women see her as a kind of cultural heroine and while they won't admit it, find her and her messy but cohesive family irresistible.
------
WHAT? Are you KIDDING me? Palin makes me want to rip out my ovaries using my bare teeth. She is the the 'lucky toenail' in the sunday potato salad at the church picnic. And as with Katherine Harris before her, she will never, EVER, everneverever, be elected to any office more involved than heading the PTA bake sale. Seriously. Palin makes Baby Jaysus cry.
~FL PUMA, turning FL blue even though FL Dem party leaders are corrupt morons. Vote Alan Grayson in FL-08!
WV: tantwe - 'tantwe all just get along in an Obama Administration?
Palin 2012 pretty much concedes to an Obama win, because if McCain wins, she'd be running against an incumbent republican. What as an independent?
"As a southern state, the cultural tilt still works in McCain's favor; Democrats are still seen as the party that tried to let black people vote in the 60s, and that ruffled a lot of feathers.""
I realize that most people who summarize the political landscape in GA like this have spent very little time in GA and talked to very few Georgians. That said, can we please start recognizing the GA's (hopefully departing) Republican leanings in at least the past 20 years were about more than just race? Like any other state, there are a variety of issues in play. It's just this sort of sentiment that often turns Southern voters off from the national Democratic party.
I waited in line here in Atlanta for 5 hours. By God, my voice will be heard!
It's true - blacks don't vote here b/c they figure that whatever they do, neither party will properly address their needs. This time it's different - get ready to be surprised at least by the margin. Atlanta can't change the state's party affiliation alone but it can sure make a dent.
There's a new video that shows why Georgians should actually vote Obama. Watch it here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4Eah06_3-k.
