McCain's Concession Speech

Gracious.

Much to say about the campaign in the post-mortem days to come, and indeed there is some angry and ugly yelling going on in the crowd that can be laid to the campaign's overall tenor, but McCain's speech is touching and gracious.

Palin looks near tears.

From Bizzaro World, but Now O Brave New World . . .

I have always admired Senator Obama from the first time he electrified the nation at the 2004 Democratic Convention. You could tell then that he was a man destined to lead. His oratory soared, yes, but the content of his ideas was so much in tune with the millennium that was then only a few years old and still fresh then as it is today.

America was founded on pluralism and multiculturalism. That has been our biggest strength, that we truly have been the big tent. The New Colossus indeed. The immortal words of Emma Lazarus’ poem inscribed on the Statue of Liberty (a gift from France – those were the days!). We have taken and cradled those “tempest tossed” throughout our history. And from those many, we became one.

Did not Obama seize the hearts and minds of a nation when he spoke not of a red or a blue America, but reminded us that we are a United States of America? Could the message have been any more prescient then as it is today?

We stand here divided on a razor’s edge, fighting over this state or that state like the last panty girdle left at a sale in Filene’s basement. Obama has come to us and has asked that we reject the divisions among us and become untied in common cause, One Nation Under God, moving towards a More Perfect Union.

Narrow partisanship divides us – right and left, Democrat and Republican. Who will bring our nation together and lead us truly into this most magnificent century full of potential for this the greatest nation on Earth?

John McCain remains a man of great honor, but he is man of the last century. He approaches a world hungry for unification from the perspective of a warrior. And while there is a place for such vigilance, there has got to be a new way, because the old way never quite seems to work.

Let us begin with the Natural Law: We here on this Earth are One Common Human Family. What is wrong then with proclaiming oneself a citizen of the world? If I am part of one thing and devote my soul to it, can I not be party to a larger thing, bringing to it the spirit, ingenuity and integrity of that smaller thing and thus make the larger greater than before? Obama gave voice to reason in Germany and he was criticized for it. I guess our international alliances and partnerships are meaningless and we had best pull up the draw bridge and take our balls and go home.

Hah!

As if that would work!

New ideas must never be resisted; rather they must be tested and confirmed or denied. In broad strokes Obama speaks of a “bottom up” approach to economics and society. We have tried the top down, trickle down approach and while it has had some success, can it not be admitted that this may be the time for a new approach?

The consumer drives our economy. By his work and her effort and their spending. Let us empower each citizen to create and retain wealth and not just rely on the wealthy to be the engines of economic dynamism.

Barack Obama embodies this new approach and philosophy. It is time to turn the page.

McCain has shown himself to be a maverick, to buck his party and to work across party lines to achieve goals - - some noble and some not. His efforts will be judged by history. But I wonder about this “maverick” label. Is it not just a mask for a lack of coherence and a love of iconoclasism borne perhaps out of an ill-tempered man’s conceit that he must buck the trends and march to his own drummer? You do not easily achieve near failure at the Naval Academy or crash several multi-million dollar aircraft easily and without design!

Today the nation and Barack Obama stand at a precipice. He is a curious man, different. Being different is not a value judgment (remember: out of many, one). He will select a running mate in the next few hours and he has the entire world on the edge of their seats. It seems the identity of that person is less important than the process.

Obama has the power to hold us in thrall, because we know in the recesses of our hearts that it is he that we have been waiting for. He is the one, the only politician in modern memory who could captivate a nation from nowhere.

This is no mean feat, ladies and gentleman. His power is undeniable.

Will the nation have the courage to risk itself on a gut instinct that this man, who himself has been forged in the crucible of our multi-culturalism, can lead us and this fragile world into the greatness that is God’s destiny for mankind?

I hope so.

In truth, I can barely contain my anxiety that it be so. Would that I could, I would fall asleep now and wake up in a brave new world on November 5th!

But I cannot slumber; I must stay awake and, yes, agitate for what must be.

Barack Obama, President of the United States of America. Leader of the Free World.

God speed him and us on our journey!

That was a pretty good speech, but still tone deaf on a few fronts -- it seemed almost like he was discounting Obama's victory at certain points as simply the victory of black folks. I mean, I wasn't proud of GWB on behalf of white people.

Again, not to rip on the guy, but that was a great speech only in comparison to the absolute dross he's been peddling for months now.

But will the outraged genie go back in the bottle? There's a lot of America I wouldn't want to visit right about now.

I agree. If McCain had run his whole campaign the way he came off in that speech he would have made this a closer race.

He should have picked Gov Crist of Florida , shown respect for his Obama, and not catered to the far right faction of the Republican party. He needed to avoid the negative attacks, as that pulled him down.

But with issues of Iraq and the economy really against him, it may still not have been enough to win.

Besides, Obama was just too good a candidate to beat I think, for anyone in 2008.

sunspot said...

You guys who think his (for a Republican) gracious speech represents the "real" McCain have things exactly reversed. What we heard tonight is the same fake McCain that BS'd his way back into Congress after being caught with his hand in Charlie Keating's cookie jar 20 years ago.

What we saw on the campaign trail this year was the real John McCain. He's every bit as nasty and spiteful (and pig ignorant) as his booing supporters. The reality is, he had to run as his own nasty self in order to draw out all the bigots, idiots and nutcases which comprise the Republican "base", and which wouldn't have come out to vote - at all - if he hadn't peddled a steady diet of ignorance and hate these past 4 months.

If McCain had spent the election giving speeches like tonight's, his % of the popular vote would be under 40 and he'd have earned fewer than 100 electoral college votes. And even more Republicans would have been turned out of the House and Senate.

Jeremy said...

Victory speeches are rarely remembered in American politics. It is the concession speeches that most reveal the character and define the candidate in history. (Checkers, anyone?)

Obama's masterful speech tonight will break that rule, while McCain's will go a long way toward rescuing him from his lesser self.

milwsport said...

It was a great speech, BUT it doesn't make up for a campaign that race baited, divided us into "real" and fake Americans and in general divided us.

John Mc Cain was someone we respected even if we disagreed with him on many issues. After this campaign he's turned himself into someone many of us revile.

A gracious concession speech doesn't change that.

I for one was actually moved to sympathy by Gov. Palin's tears. She had a lot invested in the outcome of this election, and the disappointment at having her ambitions thwarted is keen indeed. Now is not the time for payback - we voted for peace and reconciliation, and we'd better live up to it, by welcoming back our neoconservative brothers and sisters into the fold of responsible, honest citizenship.

Neither the gracious conceding McCain nor the angry, nasty old man during this campaign was the real McCain. That said, it was a gracious and very welcome speech.

One hopes that the Republican party will move more toward that mood of reconciliation. If not -- more of 'no Republican house members from any NE state.'

Palin needs to return to Alaska and never return to the "lower 48". Sarah, just go back, rock yourself in the fetal position, and wait for the rapture. Oh, and try to summon up an ounce of compassion; it'll serve you well.

Shakeer said...

Gracious? I would call it racist. After abstaining from much discussion of the racial implications throughout the campaign, he couches the entire thing in terms of the victory, "special pride" this night is for African Americans. It's not about America electing Barack Obama for anything related to the man, his campaign, his politics, his vision, or also the comparison of these things to himself and to the last eight years. It's about finally having overcome prejudice. Of course that's an incredible and noteworthy aspect but coming from such a totally negative campaign, it's hard to read his perspective as anything besides trying to frame the loss in terms of black people finally getting what they want and America finally electing a black person. Well, thank you for noting that black people have finally been fully placated McCain. I think most voters will agree, as will have followers of the campaigns and also analysts of the results, that tonight was about far more than black people finally achieving equality. A lot more has changed, and a lot more will change in the next four years.

It's true that Americans have finally elected their president based on the content of their character. John McCain meanwhile still can't see beyond the color of Obama's skin.

David said...

Have to disagree that McCain was gracious. After salting the Earth in the waning days of the campaign trying to convince white voters that Obama was any form of "other" - be it black, foreign, or terrorist - to start his consession speech by focusing on Black people having a right to feel proud that THEY elected their candidate did nothing to douse the torches he has been lighting intentionally these last few weeks.

Tonight, he doesn't have desperation as an excuse anymore, and he owes the country a lot more to repair the damage he's done during the past month.

sarik said...

mccain's followers must feel like chumps after his speech. ya mean he's NOT a terrorist? he's NOT "risky"? He's NOT a socialist.

Did anyone else notice that Sarah Palin damn near pulled Todd's arm out of its socket in her rush to get off the stage after the speech ended?

There's no way she goes back to Alaska now...she's tasted the good life, and it's hard to give up.

I see two options: A:) If "Tubes" wins (wow, Alaska...just, wow...), she appoints herself to be his replacement in the Senate after he finally resigns or is expelled. B:) If "Tubes" actually loses (sorry...not much faith in that happening), she resigns as Gov, and finds a 7-figure Fox News job waiting for her.

She does have that degree in broadcast journalism to fall back on...

Julie Janiski said...

It's disappointing that the crowd at Senator McCain's speech insisted on booing Barack Obama - even more so when contrasted with the applause given to Senator McCain during President-Elect Obama's speech.

With the unfortunate exception of those who felt booing was necessary, I'm so proud of us today.

Katemonster said...

Wait... this was "classy?" The first full minute of this speech was spiteful and racist. There was no reason to play the race card at this point in the game. It was as if he was saying, "Obama won 'cuz he's black."

If the booing crowd and McCain's racism is indicative of what Palin calls "real America," I want absolutely nothing to do with it.

For the first time in my life, I feel proud to wear red, white and blue. Thank you, America. I've never known how it feels to be proud of my country and now, for the first time in my life, I can scream with joy, "USA!"

Ed said...

Katemonster, if you heard racism in McCain's speech then it's because you are dealing with racist issues yourself. I urge you to listen again, but without prejudice. There was more honesty and heart in that speech than you will hear from any other politician. Except of course, from our new President.

sice that horrible day in America. By electing a non-American to be our leader. stock market has crashed, we borrowed 700 million from China. the unions are manipulating the big three car makers to get more money for them. Now you can't blame Bush. Obama came on tv and said that the President (Bush) was a lame duck and could not get anything done right now. that was a week after the election. So I blame the Dumbacrats, they have controlled the senate and congress for 2 years now and look what they have done. Now if the Supreme court rules that Obama has the right to be pres. (because of his birth certificate [forgery] and he is n Indonesian citizen) Then he can have total control and in four years we can blame him and all the other dumbacrats for the mess we are in.
