This site made its reputation awfully fast, largely on objective numerical analysis. The bonus articles, such as the road trip series, were nice during the election in part because they were reportage.
What would be bad for 538 IMHO is to become yet another political rumor page. The thing with Matthews, nyeah, I don't really care, but it's not the sort of thing I expect to read here. If you happen to get an exclusive like this -- tip another site, build up a little private credit, but I'd just as soon keep 538 focussed.

As a longtime Pa resident I ask Matthews to look somewhere else to carpetbag. We need an obnoxious bluedog like a hole in the head.

He has to deny it, if he is organizing a political campaign, he would be off the air Monday. I have no doubt he has approached people about running his campaign off the record.
Nothing will happen until his contract is up. I`m thinking come June all this will depend on him getting a new contract.
If not then the senate may look good.
Sean was the only reporter who actualy reported on the campaign. The rest just mobed the principle players.
He was rewarded with a story that, had there been any justice, should have won him an award. It was here, and only here, that we learned that McCain's GOTV was not just inferior, but a holow shell.
All other reporters just took the McCain campaigns' word on campaign office numbers. Only here did we learn that Obama's were buzzing and McCain's non-functional.
This time Sean got it wrong, but it will take far more than that before I stop being a fan.

I don't know what to think about this. Specter isn't that bad, but if we're going to replace him, I don't want him to be Bob Caseyesque, and we CAN elect a progressive if our state just voted for Obama by 11 points.
Of course I'm not complaining about Casey...ANYONE is better than Santorum.

I tend to believe 538 more here. Matthews has more of a reason to Bullsh-t Nate than multiple Obama staffers do. Not that I'm not understanding of Matthews' situation. I mean, he would hardly be the first political candidate to pretend he's not running for office. Matthews knows how this works.

Well, maybe Matthews is just testing the water. America is in a state of electoral exhaustion, and 2010 is so far away. Specter is a good Senator. He's moderate, sensible, corruption-free and very well-liked. Unless he declines to run in 2010 or his increasing age caches up with him before election day, it's very difficult to conceive of anyone that could beat him. I think Matthews will find the water pretty cold, and decide that dipping anything but his toes in it will be a painful experience. It could, however, increase his ratings, unless he makes a serious gaffe that completely destroys his credibility.
@Sean; You and Nate aren't just numbers jockeys. You're also providing original analysis and reporting, based on research of various kinds including direct observation and talking to people.
You weren't the first to "break the story" that Matthews is feeling out the idea (see Huffington, for example). But you have an interesting source of information and angle on this, and you do well to rely on your source.
Congratulations. And stick by your guns.

I noticed the narrowness of the denial. He is not actively recruiting staff. So, he's not recruiting staff actively, NOW!. He could, of course, be sounding people out. 'If I do decide to give it a whirl, are you interested?" "Please don't commit to anyone else until we have had a chance to talk." an so on ad nauseam.
Short of a Sherman, he hasn't actually said that he will under no foreseeable circumstances running.

Actually, the denial doesn't say what he's denying. Just "it." What is "it?" Is "it" the original report that Matthews is "in," that he has made a final and firm decision to run? Because he can deny that until he files to get his name is on a ballot.
By the way, Sean, it would help if you could quote either what you said or what he said prior to this one-sentence quote.

He's running. Of course he can't admit it yet, but if he can get the backing he wants I think it's done.
Matthews may have been tossing the idea around in his head for a while, but the election of Obama has had him chomping at the bit to get involved in politics. Also don't forget his "gaffe" on Joe Scarborough's Morning Joe about him feeling like it was his job to help this new administration work. Maybe it was inappropriate for a journalist, but I think he was saying what he really wanted to do.
I'll miss seeing him on TV if he does run, but my first piece of advice to him would be: Get a larger Phillies cap. As a fellow large-meloned person I sympathize with his plight, but you can't go around wearing a hat that only sits on the crown of your head.
A friend of mine who works for a Pennsylvania political advertising firm (Democratic) told me yesterday that his boss had been contacted to work on the Matthews campaign.
An aside: Someone up-thread called Matthews a carpetbagger. He's a Pennsylvanian (in fact, he never shuts up about it).
My friend asked this question a month ago when he came to talk at a Harvard study group. And he said he had no comment on the matter. Which basically means he is running in my opinion.
I have to agree that Matthews' chances against Specter are slim. An often-clueless cable TV gasbag is not going to unseat a five-term moderate Senator in a swing state. But Specter has had health problems (cancer) and at the age of 80 could plausibly retire.
If that happens, there'll be a serious Dem primary which Matthews would hopefully lose.
