The Drama of the Night is Now the Senate

Four Democratic pickups have been called: Warner (VA), Shaheen (NH), Udall (NM) and Hagan (NC). That gets Democrats 55.

Mark Udall in Colorado looks very strong. Ted Stevens, convicted felon, will lose. Jeff Merkley is heavily favored in the Oregon race, but those results aren't in yet.

Al Franken leads Norm Coleman in very early returns. However, Mary Landrieu looks like she's in a tight race in Louisiana, with a small lead over John Kennedy there. Roger Wicker leads Ronnie Musgrove in Mississippi.

If Udall, Begich, Merkley and Franken can win their races, and Mary Landrieu hold hers, Democrats will sit at 59 Senate seats. Then Democrats need to either keep Chambliss under 50% (some big Democratic counties are outstanding) or somehow pull off the Musgrove-Wicker upset, another race that has not been called.

Before I forget:

How come Joe the Plumber didn't work? That was such a nifty idea.

what a moment. I can't wait for the speech!

When we see numbers for Indiana/Virginia, does that include early and absentee ballots? If not, I don't see how those two can get called tonight.

How many people would have guessed that Obama would win the election...thanks to the Hispanic vote?

Wondering what to do after the election?

I am starting a new board for discussing politics, current events and other interesting topics. It is a spin-off of the blog that some of you know about; you can read an overview of the forum here.

If interested, follow the instructions at the bottom to contact me. Brain-dead right-wing trolls need not apply. :)

Anyone see Joe the Plumber get roasted by Rick Sanchez of CNN? HILARIOUS

CRLIndoland said...

When do they count early and absantee voters?

Sean said...

Joe the plumber getting roasted by Rick Sanchez was classic. Forgive me for sounding naive but how many seats is needed to be filibuster proof?

Cugel said...

But? Say it ain't so Joe the Plummer?

Joe wants to run for election himself. Ho! He! He!

I'm still fretting over the 6th Minnesota Congressional District; the early returns have that nut Bachmann in the lead.

Will you be posting commentary on how accurate different pollsters were this election, after things die down?

Joe the Plumber was nifty in 1950. Welcome to the future Joe.

so when does McCain concede? When he loses VA I'm guessing

You need 60 votes to escape a filibuster

Joe the Plumber didn't work because he was too busy being an idiot. And to Sean, I saw him get spanked by Sanchez, and it was a beautiful moment.

The old GOP tricks have finally stopped working. America is sick of all the B.S.

Proposition 8 could still be pretty dramatic, and much more important than any single U.S. Senate race.

Any updates?

The Joe the Plumber gambit was definitive evidence that the McCain-Palin campaign was in the toilet.

wv: soricit (?) What kind of question is that??? Yes, it is sore.

Kevin said...

Joe the plumber didn't work because, as McCain said, (he's) rich. As soon as I found out he was in the top tax bracket, I really didn't care about how he felt about getting taxed another 5%.

Dammit. CALL FLORIDA ALREADY!!

samfrye said...

Joe the Plumber was an insult to most of the middle class: the idea that one guy somehow represented an entire demographic. McCain even called him "an American hero" in one of his speeches. That's a pretty huge load of BS to swallow.

Why are we still focused on whether Dems get to the "filibuster-proof" magic number of 60 when that count includes Joe Lieberman. He has already publicly stated that a filibuster-proof Senate would be the worst thing ever, a national tragedy, yadda.

Does anyone really think that Democrats can rely on Joe Lieberman to back a progressive agenda?

Has anyone checked in with the freeptards?

Hopefully they are taking it well.

North Carolina just went red. :(

I don't think McCain will concede (sp?) before California closes. Maybe he'll even wait for Alaska out of courtesy to Palin. (Or do these close at the same time?)

Joe the plumber didn't work because very little sympathy can be felt for the economic woes of someone making over 250,000 grand a year. Even though he wasn't...

I did the same, Tyler, but the results do not look good for Tinklenberg. This district is full of idiots.

For me, the "big drama" is whether NC turns blue (I am waiting with bated breath...), which is what I have been volunteering toward for weeks, including canvassing in the rain today. Pleeeeeeez?!

akoolromeo said...

I wouldn't be surprised if Joe Lieberman becomes a Republican. he might as well, since the Democrats hate him and the Republicans don't like him much either. He's a politican without a home.
The Republican's problem is they are too White. As this country moves more towards a multi-cultural country, a party who primarily caters to just one race, and mainly White Males, I just don't see how they are going to compete Nationally in the future, especially if they keep up the anti-immigration rhetoric, which some Hispanic perceives as racist. When McCain loses 35% of the Cuban vote in Florida, that is a bad sign, because there was a time not so long ago, there weren't any Cuban Americans who would vote Democratic. That time wa sonly about 4 years ago. (Granted those 35% were the young Cuban American voters)

Steve said...

Joe the Plumber might have worked if he had been:
1. Introduced as a campaign gimmick earlier, before Obama was a near-lock,
2. Closer to median income,
3. Charismatic,
4. Able to explain how he would benefit from a McCain administration,
5. Able to explain how anyone else would benefit from a McCain administration,
6. An actual licensed plumber.

Terry said...

Mere Creetur: NC still probably too close to call, but looking good for Obama with 87% reporting.
