Vice-Presidential Debate Liveblog #2: Live From Wash U.

10:06 CDT: [Nate] The CBS poll of undecideds had Biden winning the debate 46-21, with 33 percent calling it a tie. But few votes were moved as as result. Among the undecideds, 18 percent committed to Obama, and 10 percent committed to McCain, but 71 percent remained uncommitted.

Biden won the CNN and CBS focus groups. Palin won the Luntz focus group. The candidates tied in the Halperin focus group.

9:38 CDT:
[Sean] Brett and I are going to rush over to SLU where Sarah Palin is having a rally, and then later a few well-earned drinks in the Loop. Nate will do some post-mortem thoughts in a bit.

9:37 CDT: [Nate] I think this one is likely to go to Biden in the post-debate polling, and perhaps by a fair margin. The expectations game is much more important for the media than for the public, and for a lot of people, she's going to come across as too scripted, come across way too close to the SNL caricature.

9:29 CDT: [Sean] The woman too chicken to face a press conference says she sure doggone bumdiggity wishes there could be more of this with less of that pesky media involved.

9:24 CDT: [Sean] Biden is really hitting it strong here at the end. Really emotionally connecting with kitchen table issues and middle class struggles while Palin has been cutesy throughout.

9:23 CDT: [Sean] Wow, Nate.

9:22 CDT: [Nate] What kind of prop odds could you have gotten on Biden being the one to cry?

9:21 CDT: [Sean] Biden has had a number of moments where he has emotionally connected, including that moment just there, where he looked like he was choking up about a child who might not make it. Biden's best moment of the night, hands down.

VP Debate- BrettMarty.com

9:19 CDT: [Nate] I think her VP answer might be one of those things that turns out to be a bigger deal after the fact.

9:16 CDT: [Nate] Actually, the dial-testers liked her last answer. [Sean] It was a "Whoa!" breathtaking moment here in the crowd when she said the teachers' reward would be in heaven. Given that Obama has argued for increased teacher pay, I have to believe this is going to be an issue the Obama camp pushes in the coming days.

9:14 CDT: [Sean] Palin's suggestion for the vice-presidency, as a tweak? Maybe give it a little more power. There has been open laughter at Palin the last few minutes. Wish I could see those dials.

9:12 CDT: [Sean] Palin on Biden's teacher wife: "God bless her, her reward is in heaven, right?" That is the sound of every teacher in America voting for Barack Obama. Wow. What a mistake.

9:07 CDT: [Sean] It seems the meta thru-line of Governor Palin's performance tonight is that we need change from the folks who've been in Washington for a long time. That can't be a good thematic element.

Biden, on the other hand, was strongest in the beginning when he was middle classing it up left and right. He's gotten away from that.

9:00 CDT: [Nate] For those of you with CNN HD, watching the analyst scorecards reminds one an awful lot of watching Olympic Boxing.

Final thooughts:

Palin did not defecate on herself -- at least that we could see -- nor did she leave the stage a crying mess. (Though Joe -- God love him -- almost did.)

So, the Neocons will pee all over themselves with excitement. She was able to string together a total of 4 coherent and complete sentences. SHE WON!!!

On substance Joe won. But she did redeem herself from the ignoramus with lipstick who was an embarassment to McCain. And appearance is everything in these debates.

Luckily Joe did not disgrace himself, and he was able to continue to drive home that McCain = Bush pretty much unmolested, so the Obama campaign is breathing easier, too.

I wouldn't alow this woman to answer the phones at my law firm, but in the Republican Party she will be the presidential nominee-presumptive after November 4. Go figure.

Palin lost. Obama Landslide.

Its all over. Repubs ruined the place--time to boot them out.

She could only read from index cards and even then her sentences did not make coherent logical arguments. Remember she never answered questions or responded to Biden's attacks on McCain's record of Bush's last 8 years. LOL

The only civil liberties they talked about were of gays.

What about journalists arrested at the convetion, voters in places like Michigan and Indiana where there is voter suppression, Immigrant rights, detainee rights, the 4th amendment?

Had Biden or Palin mentioned those, they would have figuratively knocked out their opponent.

Instead we get a nervous Palin and a boring Biden.

Now if you said exceptional knowledge for a 5 year old instead of 5 weeks on the national scene, your comment would be a little more reality based. I don't think she is a moron, but she seems just as incurious about the world as W, and that is not a good thing.

On the one hand, Sarah Palin didn't accidentally eat her own face, so she beat expectations.

On the gripping hand, history shows that VP debates, even when there's a blowout (think Dan Quayle), never move the overall horse-race.

It's true that Palin "stopped the bleeding," which is sort of a success. But that's not really the point. What was accomplished at this debate?

For Palin, she didn't really screw up in any way, but what appeal did she have that she didn't already have? She was cute and quirky and joesixpacky, but who didn't already know that about her? People who like her, will continue to like her. People who like her enough to vote for her, will continue to vote for her. Will she win over any Obama supporters? No. Any undecideds? Very few.

Biden, on the other hand, was just "likable," he was impressive. Anyone who is thinking about Obama, would have to find Biden at least reassuring.

This debate will stop the bleeding for McCain, but it will help Obama.

Trevor said...

Obama is up by 4 in 18-34, if I am reading it right, still not by as much as you'd think. The 35-49 huge McCain lead is more surprising, as is Obama's large lead with older voters.

The one thing the poll has right is that Franken will probably run about 9% behind Obama. How close is the Rep/DFL/Indy ratio of 30/37/21? Sounds reasonable to me.

SUSA polls have been all over the place lately...

but a poll to hang your hopes on if a GOPer partisan - and the close poll in CO O+1 by Ciruli & MsnDxn VA M+3..

that was about it for positive polls in battleground states for Mac today...

how many cutesy gimmicks can one ex-beauty queen throw out there ?

too cute x12 - and she made my 79 y/o professional [retired] widowed mother squirm in discomfort for women everywhere...

plus my mom was upset that palin had dumped her disabled infant on her pregnant daughter AGAIN - then dragged the infant on STAGE - then paraded the infant around the stage under those lights late at night when the baby should be in a nice quiet comfortable crib with it's mother in the next room on the monitor !!!

my mom despises Palin now just for that - maybe because my mom had her own downs child late in life but her baby died right after birth...

so the entire Palin 'special needs' drama is open to a big backlash from parents who do not parade their special needs baby around for PR purposes when they should be caring for them...

some 'family values' to go with the pregnant daughter too... as well as all the other baby mama dramas in that disfuntional family...

While Palin repeated her script for the 3rd and 4th time, the real aggressive Biden came out demonstrating passion to go with his superior breadth and depth.

She may be likable, but nobody can seriously view her in the White House as anything but a disaster or a puppet.

The proof is however that they have inherited on several occasions large surpluses from Dems and then lowered taxes to the rich. This has propelled us into huge deficiets. okay it all comes down to this...: AMERICA DO YOU WANT ANOTHER GEORGE BUSH? if you are deciding to vote republican for McCain you are basically asking george Bush to stay in office because thats all its going to really be.

Really consider what youre thinking... and if McCain were to pass away PALIN would be our president! Really, what could we ever benefit from that??????? Nothing so the smart decision would be to vote for Obama... did you see the vice presidental debate last night???? Did you see how Palin never clearly answered her questions? she has no idea how to run the country... The End.
