Today's Polls, 10/29

We're getting to you a little bit late tonight, so let's keep this short and to the point...

With no fewer than 45 polls released since our last update, covering essentially all of the major swing states, we have a pretty good idea of where this race stands -- a far better idea than you'll get by trying to discern the meaning of John Zogby's divining rod or paying any attention to what you see on the front page of Drudge Report. What we can say, when we put all this information together, is that there are two things that John McCain is NOT doing.

Number one, John McCain is NOT closing Obama's margin as quickly as he needs to (if indeed he is closing it at all). This appears to be a 6- or 7- point race right now ... that's where we have it, that's where RCP has it, that where Pollster.com has it. In order to beat Barack Obama, John McCain will need to gain at least one point per day between now and the election. Our model does think that McCain has pared about a point off Obama's margin -- but it has taken him a week to do so. Now, McCain needs to gain six more points in six more days. And he needs to do so with no real ground game, no real advertsing budget, and no one particularly strong message. Not easy.

Number two, John McCain is NOT gaining ground in the states that matter the most. The top tier of states in this election are Virginia, Colorado and Pennsylvania. There is lots of lots of polling in these states, particularly in Virgnia and Pennsylvania, and it's all coming up in roughly the same range, showing Obama leads in the high single digits (in VA and CO) or the low double digits (in PA). The second tier of states is probably Ohio, Florida and Nevada. McCain seems to be getting a bit stronger in Florida; Obama seems to be getting a bit stronger in Ohio and Nevada. McCain does seem to have halted Obama's progress in some of the third-tier states, particularly Missouri and North Carolina. On the other hand, some other third-tier states, like New Mexico and particularly New Hampshire (where Obama is getting some insane numbers lately), now appear to be off the table.

My feeling is that John McCain still needs some sort of external contingency to win the presidency. Even if some of the more conservative turnout models are correct AND even if he were to win large majorities of the undecided vote, he is probably a little bit too far behind to catch up. Rather, McCain will need to find some way to eat into some fraction of Obama's decided vote, and because most of Obama's support is quite hard (e.g. enthusiastic), that will not be easy to do.

"Yes I've been explaining this to people as well. Kerry+IA+VA=Victory. People are still questioning PA, but it's clearly blue. Once VA comes it, it's not a matter of if we win, but by just how large a margin."

Not only that... but Obama could win pretty easily even if McCain won PA in such a scenario as Obama is also very likely to win NM, Nevada, & Colorado which would make up for the lost EV of PA.

When you really break it down state by state that's where Obama looks strongest.

That being said, I still want to see a huge lead in the popular vote totals. I want to see a total rejection of the policies of the last 8 years and the disgusting dishonest campaign tactics of McCain/Palin/Fox News.

When asked by the McCain campaign by a CNN reporter why they were bringing up a six month old article in the LA times about a dinner party that happened five years ago they responded with "Because in a week Obama could be the next president of the United States". They admit they are doing this in desparation...

You folks who are saying what great things Obama said at the Khalidi dinner should be clamoring for release of the tape to prove your point.

Honesty is a tough thing. The reason you guys don't want the tape released is because you are afraid it will hurt Obama. We all let bias affect us. But you should tell the truth.

And no, no one ever went to jail for not honoring a promise to a source.

For those of you who are relying upon the alleged promise to the source, which obviously did not include not disclosing what was said on the tape because the original story quoted from the tape, do you have a legitimate reason for opposing release of a transcript of the video?

By the way, the local news tonight had the latest poll showing McCain up 2% in Missouri.

"If Obama is pro Isreal then the Jewish voters can be happy and if he's not America can possible get peace in the Middle East"

Derek--that's inappropriate. It's NOT an "either/or" situation. There is nothing incompatable between being pro-Israel (in the sense of believing that Israel has a basic right to exist as a Jewish-majority, democratic state) and sincerely seeking and achieving a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. Statements like yours can easily be read as anti-semetic (which, I hope, is not your state of mind), and are the sort of thing that has been pushing Jewish American voters out of their traditional home in the Dem party. The GOP just LOVES picking off the Jewish voters driven into their arms.

Yes, Israel's governance has had its flaws, but to simplistically criticize how it kills "children", and to paint the Palestinians as oppressed, innocent victims is outrageous. The situation is MUCH more complex, and there is plenty of blame and hurt on both sides.

Beammen.. I know that it isn't an either or and it was poor wording on my part but my point is...

1. Jews and Muslims have a complex history
2. Because Jewish voters make up a small but key voting block in big swing states esp. FL
3. Because of this there has been a lot of pandering to the Jewsih community dispite the fact that the obvious solution is to be pro peace and common ground and blame one side or the other
4. Isreal has a right to exhist but so does Palistine

That is all I'm saying

As an Arizonan, it seems like there is a huge surge for Obama. I have been politically active since I was 16, and I am having friends and even acquaintances that I hardly know come up to me that I *know* are not politically active, and I *know* didn't vote in the last 3 Presidential Elections and are telling *ME* that I need to make sure I vote (I have already mailed in my ballot btw).

TONS of people are fired up about this election, people that I never hear from. The other significant thing I am hearing is how quiet my extended family is. They're dyed in the wool red state Evangelical Republicans. I got to read that Focus on the Family letter before anyone in the media had commented on it. I know that the older parts of my family will vote, and some already have, but the Republican parts of my family that are my age - I'm not so sure. Even if they agree with McCain on some issues, they're generally pretty progressive on social issues, and the whole Prop 102 thing might just be enough for them to stay home and not vote.

We'll see. I have the same feeling I had when Janet ran and was slowly raising her numbers just days before her election. You want to be trending up as you reach the election, let's see if Obama can turn AZ blue! ^_^

LOL @ Zogby. He is funnier than Chris Rock.

I see no usefulness in his polls in terms of a gauge of the mood of the electorate. But it certainly contributes to the spin. And if tomorrow the spin is positive for Obama (or at least a counter to the tightening meme) then I dont see how thats a bad thing. But anybody who thinks there has actually been a shift in electorate preference corresponding with his poll shift...well I dont know what to say.

I know some will argue that a tightening poll situation discourages Obama supporter complacency. But to hell with that shit. Number one, its bad on my nerves. Number two, its a double edge sword...tightening polls may also increase McShame supporter enthusiasm. Gauging from this and other mostly pro-obama sites, paranoia about voter suppression/election fraud seem to be enough to counter any complacency. I'll believe in the complaceny effect the same minute I start believing in the bradley effect.

So I guess we can expect Rass to show a shift back to Obama on the economy question.

I figure anything less than 5% is stealable, so we should assume Ohio, Nevada, MO, Florida, & NC are lost to the Repubs, even without the vote probs in NC. (And even if McC's not in on it directly: He *did* once have some integrity.) Assuming that the 2-4% cushion is stable in MN, PA, NM, and NH, O's still 5 EVs short of victory. So he really does need Virginia or Colorado, which may be borderline riggable. Hopefully their Dem. governors can keep them reasonably honest.

I konw this has been pointed out but it is so funny how Bad the Palin pick is... In his interview with CNN McCain was defending Palin by saying a lwhile ago a governor of a small state of AR couldn't compare to Bush 1 after we had just won the cold war...

So Barack... who just had this great president who McCain is comparing Palin to endorse him again... who doesn't have a lot of foreign policy creds... but certaintly more than Clinton/Bush 2/Palin/Romney etc. had or has...

So Barack should be the next president because it isn't about experience. McCain undercut his one and only decent argument by picking Palin over someone who is strong on the economy

It's astounding. When he first picked her, I was euphoric - I couldn't believe how incredibly stupid it was. But then I started getting nervous - they must have some trick up their sleeves - and sure enough, she became a superstar and McCain started surging in the polls even after Obama's magnificent acceptance speech at the DNC.

But now she's turned out to be even worse than I'd originally hoped.

People say that McCain would be losing no matter what, but I can't imagine him not doing a LOT better if he'd run a scrupulously honest and honorable campaign and picked Meg Whitman or Tom Ridge, and gone back to McCain 2000.

I was not goona go because of our cold weather [I wore a stocking cap & wool overcpat]

but it was a once in a lifetime opp so off I went 90 minute drive to far Kissimmee

huge crowd for that late at night

Jimmy Smits warmed up the crowd, kanye West played over the sound system, diverse enthusiastic people, young, integrated, foreigners too that had to be there tonight to see both Bill & Barck together as Clinton metaphorically annointed Obama as his deserving heir to POTUS

when we could see the Obama bus pull up behind the stage, the crowd started to really get up...

not the greatest oratory tonight - but that was not a priority

also no sweet potato pie story [damm] but he did do the 'dug us into this deep hole & Bish wants to give the shovel to Mccain' punchline effectively [Bill liked it alot]

they actually acted like they really LIKE each other on stage tonight !!!

when it ended, everyone in the crowd was singing 'signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours'

but my favorite memory of the night which required 6 hours total for me was posted on Sean's thread earlier.

I will go copy it & paste it here in a few minutes FWIW

Can you add Right Wing Conspiracist to your list of 'vanished trolls'? After the "I'LL KILL YOU ALL" rant about the now-revealed-to-be-lying RNC woman who said she was attacked, and forgot that looking in a mirror to scratch a letter in your face you have to reverse it, RWC has vanished from the comments. Instead of apologizing, which would have been the proper thing to do.

It's not so much the over-the-top reactions I mind so much, as the fact that even when they're proven wrong, these folks simply can't own up to it, ever. As the French say, only a fool doesn't change his mind. Far right nuts should consider that thought.

SEAN

did you make it to the midnight rally in Kissimmee with Bill & Barack & tens of thousands of us ?

what a night !!! truly a once in a lifetime type of event

Bill Clinton at his finest hour perhaps ?

can't wait for your report & Brett's photos

wish you couldea watched it from my vantage about 50 yards in front of the podium in the sea of diverse citizens of FL & the world

even met foreigners in town for the attractions who HAD to come for this amazing night

my favorite memory was a small 9 y/o latino boy [Alex] with his family that I bumped into [literally] before the speeches started when the crowd surged forward...

he had no chance to be able to see over the literal sea of taller humanity - but he was excited & waited patiently

I asked his mom if she had figured out a way to let him see both Bill & Barack when they came out on stage

I offedrred to hoist him up during their speeches if he weighed under 50 lbs so I would not kill my back

he said he weighed only 70 lbs, so I figured out that if I knelt down with one leg to the side bent at 45 degrees that he could step up on my knee and see over the crowd in front of us

he tried & it worked & he got super enthusiastic

of course all the short people asked if they could use my knee as a stepstool too

anyway, after Bill started to speak, Alex got up with this HUGE smile & bright wide eyes of wonderment that he could see a POTUS right in front of him

later when Bill passed off to Barack & the crowd settled down a bit, I let Alex up again for figuratively the site of our next POTUS, a man of color, and the boy was estatic as he towered over the crowd

he even got to take photos from up above as he had a better view than ANYONE around us for a minute or so

I have no doubt that for this young lation boy it will truly be a memory that will inspire him & last a lifetime

it also was something special for me to be able to literally give a deserving young person a leg up on a cold clear night in central FL where we got to see history in the making

I forgot to take a picture of Alex in all the excitement - but I wish I had because it was something special indeed...

YES WE CAN - SI SE PUEDE

FL is going BLUE - gonna rinse that red right outta our state !

The Palin pick will always be a mystery, or just a very good illustration of exactly how inept the McCain campaign was.

On the other hand, everything BHO touches turns to gold. One gaffe in March when an infiltrator snuck into a fundraiser. Virtual perfection since. True to form, Obama will dominate the narrative for the last few days.

Today the GDP numbers will come out. If it's negative, then it would be another blow to McCain's campaign, otherwise, he'll make some progress from today until the day of the election. Although, if the GDP is in "high" negative (i.e. 0.0 - -1.0), then the McCain's campaign may brush it off as another "fundamentally" sound economy that is going to come out not beleaguered in near future and run with that notion to bury the economical anxiety people are suffering right now.

Another point is that according to electoral-vote, on Oct 29, 2004 Kerry was trailing Bush by (Kerry 236 Bush 281). Obama has a very good chance of winning this election if there is no major blowout until the election day.

I'm still surprised that Nate refuses to consider how vote-flipping etc will effect the outcome. Given evidence of prior Republican manipulation of voting machines, misinformation to minority voters, and other suppression techniques, does he really think that CO, VA, and PA really will go for Obama? Nate,

There is a flaw in your analysis. You say that McCain, being down 6 points, has to make up 1 point a day to overtake Obama's lead on Election Day. But it is actually much worse than that. 25% of the country has already voted, and it will be higher by election day (and it is higher in some key battlegrounds). If the polls are accurate, that means that Obama has already won 1/4 of the electorate by 6-7 percentage points. This means that if the election were held today, McCain would have to win something like 54% of the remaining vote to pull even. If he only makes up a point a day and people continue to vote in the numbers they have been, he would need to win something like 60% of the votes cast on election day to overtake Obama. In other words, if the polls accurately reflect the way people have voted and continue to vote, the election is already, for all intents and purposes, over.

My hypothesis: The discrepency in tightening between the national and state polls is showing the air and ground effect for Obama. There is a natural tightening going on as frustrated Republicans hold their noses and get in line behind McCain. The battlegrounds, however, are resisting this movement to some extent as Obama's ground game is getting more and more sporatic voters to log actual votes and his air game is soaking up undecideds.
