(WASHINGTON) — Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens has been convicted of lying about free home renovations and other gifts he received from a wealthy oil contractor.The election being thrown into "disarray" is a polite way to put it. Obviously, we'll want to get Ivan Moore or Rasmussen out into the field ASAP. But it's hard to imagine Stevens having more than a snowball's chance in hell of hanging onto his seat. In some ways, the 12 jurors in Washington may have been the first voters of the 2008 election.
The Senate's longest-serving Republican, Stevens was found guilty on all seven counts of making false statements on Senate financial documents.
The verdict throws the upcoming election into disarray. Stevens is fighting off a challenge from Democrat Mark Begich and must now either drop out or continue campaigning as a convicted felon.

joshua, take a look at the NC numbers then - they have comparisons with 2004 too. Already, there are 15% more early voters, and far more dems etc. IMHO NC has already gone.
So I've been doing a lot of thinking about Palin lately... I remember Nate's story about how Palin was a better pick on paper than in reality. I think the problem with this analysis is that the reality was created by McCain. Obama has never really framed Palin, they were cuaght pretty flat footed. This has been McCain and his people. They have completely messed up her roll out. Part of it is that she wasn't ready and lacks intellectual curiousity but a lot of it is the McCain campaign. They have turned her into a characture. They themselves call her a diva even though they were the one's who dressed her up in 150,000 dollar clothing.
Shame on you McCain campaign.

I couldn't agree with you more (or, as John McCain would say, I couldn't agree with you). It's a shame that the whole clip isn't played more often so people could see how long Obama spent talking to this tool--admittedly far longer than I would have.

Not true. Keep trying. In North Carolina, this is an issue. There are many Dixiecrats. That said, we can look at polls and how Dems are saying they'll vote. We can also look at past history. In North Carolina, McCain is likely to win about 20% of the dem vote. That said, there are many more Dems than Pubs. also, if we look at the Voter ID and see that in 2004 it was 48% dem and 37% Pub and in 2008, it's 55% Dem and 27% Pub, the Dems are doing better. In most states, this is not an issue as Dems and Pubs tend to vote about 90% for their own.
You really are dumb, the internals claim 83% of dems were supporting Obama. Which part of that don't you understand. If a dem gets 75% of dem support in NC the win everytime, espcially if they hav a 20 pt lead in indies. You should really learn something about NC.

Day 15: IBD/TIPP Tracking Poll
After seesawing between 3.2 and 3.9 points over the weekend, Obama's lead slipped to 2.8 Monday. Battleground also has Obama up 3, and other polls have tightened, including Rasmussen, Zogby and Gallup to 5. Some polls show swings in independents, but IBD/TIPP has them in a stable, 5-point range.

Here's a pitch for the fences:
Stevens drops out. Palin leaves the McCain ticket in order to replace Stevens on the Alaska ballot. McCain announces if he is elected then Tom Ridge will be his veep. Conservatives go along with it to avoid Obama socialism. McCain/Ridge carries Pennsylvania which wins him the election while Palin keeps the seat in Alaska for the GOP and goes to Washington anyway.
Any reason this couldn't happen?

Reason it won't happen. If Palin drops out of the ticket, so will the conservative wingnuts, causing him to lose the strongest supporters he does have. Regardless of the reason, and especially considering the recent revelations of acrimony within the ranks, the decision to drop Palin will be seen as just another hail Mary from an "erratic" McCain, and what independents were considering voting for him would run the hell away. Lose the wingnuts, lose the independents, and you've got a big, fat nothing.
That would be one scenerio under which Obama will carry just about every state in the Union.

We vote for electors not the actual names - or something like that. If McCain were to become incapacitated tomorrow the early voting for the GOP would still count. What I don't know is if they can place ANYONE at the top of the ticket. Could someone please respond with the answer to that. I am very curious.

What I do know is they exhibit many of the same qualities or so it is written. As for divinity, above my paygrade with respect to both.
I'm going to put off flying to Anchorage to visit family for a few weeks--until the new signage is in place for "Felon International Airport" or whatever it becomes.
OK, another Alaskan here.
Stevens still has a very good chance to win here. Before you bash Alaska, remember that other states have elected dead guys. Plus, Stevens is unique. And, before you flame me, I've lived here for almost 30 years now, and I've voted against Uncle Ted every time.
First, there's the pity vote. The guy is 84 years old, and now faces jail time. Alaskans will not like that prospect, and might vote for him just to show support. After all, this guy has probably brought more money to this state than oil (which most of you won't like, but Alaskans do).
Secondly, he has built up a tremendous following in other ways. Just one little story. I took a cab home a few years ago, and somehow the discussion turned to Stevens. The cab driver told the story of meeting his wife, a foreigner then, and having endless trouble with the state departement getting citizenship for her. One call to Ted Stevens, and the problem was solved the next day. This is a *cab driver*. Uncle Ted actually did care about *all* Alaskans, and I will give him credit for that.
And, as others have pointed out, if Stevens wins, but gets booted from the Senate, Alaska will have a special election to replace him. Many Alaskans will think this way, and we're a very republican state, so they may decide that is the way to go.
In summary, I wouldn't start celebrating just yet. I will vote for Begich, and I think he will win. Unscientifically, I'd say about 3:1 in favor of Begich.

Stevens still has a very good chance to win here. Before you bash Alaska, remember that other states have elected dead guys. Plus, Stevens is unique. And, before you flame me, I've lived here for almost 30 years now, and I've voted against Uncle Ted every time.
Do you really believe that Stevens who was trailing before the verdict can now surpass his opponent?

I'm glad the cab driver's wife was able to gain citizenship, but this sort of small- (or big-) favor politics is exactly what got Stevens into trouble. It's a paternalistic frame of mind that leads to corruption and unfairness, and it's a pox on the democracy at large, even if it's kind to a single person.

Is early voting low in Virginia because of this? If so, it's not being reported. The only numbers available for Virginia are for Fairfax County. It has very low turnout relative to other states if the numbers are similar everywhere. Peculiar. anyone know what's up with Virginia early voting?

The polls showed Stevens gaining, and it was essentially a tie before the verdict. Now, that it has actually happened, a new set of thought processes take over. Will our 84-year-old Senator actually have to spend time in jail? There will be a pity vote, but that will be balanced against those who vote with more common sense. Anway, to answer you question, yes I really believe that he has a realistic chance to win. Begich is a strong candidate however; the best that I can remember, so hopefully Alaskans will look at him as a good choice, regardless of their feelings about Stevens.

markymark--I didn't intend to imply that agnosticism or atheism were one and the same. From my prospective and his comments, I got the impression that he was not an overly religious person certainly not of the Christian variety; hence the reference to agnosticism and atheism in my response.

"Early voting" in VA is the equivalent of absentee ballot in person (I know how absurd that sounds). Basically, you need to have a reason why you need to vote early. The only one a majority of people can probably claim is that their work hours + commute >= 11 hours. For that reason, a vast majority of Virginians, myself included, will not be voting until November 4th.
If the polling continues until 9:00 PM instead of 7:00 PM, it will be a looong night (not that I don't want everyone to have a chance to vote).
eric--I have relatives in VA who were told there wasn't early voting! That is going to make for one heck of a line on next Tuesday!

Just about every single sentence is impossible for one reason or another. Stevens can't drop out, the Repubs are stuck with him on the ballot. Even if he could drop out, Palin wouldn't want to run for a smaller office, and lose anyway. McCain could urge Republican electors to vote for Ridge for VP, but in some states they would be oath-bound to vote for Palin, since (as with Stevens) that's the name on the ballot and can't be changed now. Conservatives would never go for Ridge, because he's a "baby-killer" and they have no rationality on that topic. It probably wouldn't carry Pennsylvania anyway. And Pennsylvania isn't enough for McCain anymore if VA, CO, NV, etc. are gone.

I agree with you to a certain extent, but there are often two sides to issues. Have you every tried to fight a government bureaucracy, even when your motives were noble and logic unassailable? I have, in other circumstances, and it was resolved with political intervention (in my favor). Sometimes, an advocate cuts through much red tape.
Anyway, it's an off-topic debate. The main point is that I'd bet that the cab driver will still vote for Ted, just as long as he's on the ballot. Ted has helped many, many people over almost 40 years in the Senate (plus made a few enemies!)

Apropos of nothing, but I just got a call about voting early in Fairfax. For anyone that wants to know, the Fairfax County Gov't Center is one of the locations, and the call said something about 6 other satellite locations in the county. They also have Saturday hours.

Yes, sorry, it is a bit off-topic. In fact, I lived in a Third World, highly bureaucratized country for several years, and I know what you're talking about (e.g., having to spend a few DAYS to gain permission to make some photocopies). But the ultimate answer is to make these bureaucracies more efficient and citizen-friendly, not to work on this micro-level that bandages over problems. Stevens is an American Senator, for God's sake; he should be helping to solve these sorts of problems, not handing out favors like a feudal lord.

As AlaskaGuy suggests, I think Nate and several of the commenters here are underestimating Stevens' massive fanbase in Alaska and the powerful and not particularly rational loyalty he has accrued over the last forty years. While I think the conviction has tipped the election in Begich's favor I would be wary of writing off Stevens, period. The Mudflats says everything I want to say better than I could:

Why? Senator Stevens did a great job for the state of Alaska while he was on the straight and narrow. Just because he became a corrupt politician doesn't mean we take away all the good he did for the state before he became corrupted. I'm proud to say I did vote for an uncorrupted Stevens, just like I'm proud to say I'll be voting for Begich come Tuesday.
