Road to 270: Washington

Today we continue our Road to 270 series with the Evergreen State, Washington.

STARBUCKS HEAVEN, Worshington state, my friends, has 13.63 Starbucks for every Walmart. Larry David ordering a "Vanilla Bulls**t" notwithstanding, the power of coffee-drinking liberals in Worshington is not to be mocked. Unsurprisingly, Barack Obama will carry the state's eleven electoral votes.

Key Demographics

Note: Factors colored in red can generally be thought to help McCain. Factors in blue can generally be thought to help Obama. Factors in purple have ambiguous effects. Except where otherwise apparent, the numbers next to each variable represent the proportion out of each 100 residents in each state who fall into that category. Fundraising numbers reflect dollars raised in the 2008 campaign cycle per eligible voter in each state. Figures for seniors and youth voters are proportions of all residents aged 18+, rather than all residents of any age. The figure for education reflects the average number of years of completed schooling for all adults aged 25+. The figure for same-sex households reflects the number of same-sex partner households as a proportion of all households in the state. The liberal-conservative index is scaled from 0 (conservative) to 100 (liberal), based on a Likert score of voter self-identification in 2004 exit polls. The turnout rates reflect eligible voters only. Unemployment rates are current as of June 2008.

What McCain Has Going For Him

Lots of military vets live in Worshington, so do a lot of Mormons, and a not-uncompetitive number of Republicans live in the state. Factors that normally favor Obama strongly aren't as prominent here (female voters are under the median, youth voters are only just past the median, black voters are under the median), so it's not an obvious state where a Western-based Republican couldn't compete. The problem McCain faces -- aside from not actually competing here -- is that the large eastern expanses of the state, where he'll do well, don't have enough people to offset the large population base in the SEA-TAC corridor.

What Obama Has Going For Him

Hipsters. Lots and lots of them. They love Obama. They're educated, they live in their same-sex households, they donate to Obama at a much higher clip than most states, and they're going to wear ironic clothing and send in their permanent absentee ballots for the Democratic candidate for president. The state has a higher percentage of Hispanic voters than African-American voters, and Obama is winning independents here at a strong enough rate that he should even bring in some coattails for downballot candidates like Darcy Burner in Worshington's 8th U.S. House district.

What To Watch For

The Christine Gregoire-Dino Rossi rematch for the governorship and the aforementioned Darcy Burner-Dave Reichert race is where all the drama unfolds in Worshington, my friends. The Gregoire-Rossi race was the most dramatic of 2004, where recounts ultimately produced a 129-vote win for the Democrat. Six Democratic House seats are safe, as are the two Republican seats comprising the eastern 2/3 of the state. The 8th district, smack in the west-central part of the state extending from the eastern Seattle suburbs into the rural county areas, saw Reichert narrowly hold onto his seat in the 2006 wave, and Democrats have coveted winning a seat for Burner for several years now. The race is a tossup, due to Reichert's personal popularity (he famously and successfully led the investigation into the Green River serial killings) in the face of a national headwind for Republicans. If Burner manages to take the seat, expect to see netroots Democrats taking special pleasure in the win. If Reichert holds on, expect strong disappointment, including from Burner donor Brett Marty.

What's with the "Worshington" bit? My southeastern Ohio relatives call it that, but I lived there for quite a long time and never heard anyone call it that - east or west of the Cascades.

Yay, Washington, my home state, home of the greatest city in the world (Seattle) and the worst sports teams in 2008...or almost any other year for that matter. Proud graduate of the West Seattle High School (former) Indians, now called some politically correct name. First got interested in politics at age 10, carrying a "Rosellini for Governor" sign, and shaking his hand just 2 blocks from my house...he lost that year to Dan Evans. Go Obama, Go Darcy, Go Christine...keep Washington BLUE!

I'm glad to see you finally covered my state, as we sometimes get overlooked. Actually, we are two states neatly divided by the Cascade range. My side is a deep dark blue and will vote for Obama in overwhelming numbers. We are also very tolerant, except when someone calls us "Worshington".

There are three syllables in Oregon. The third is stressed, unlike the second in London and Boston.

Does anyone else find the McCain/Palin adverts to be, well, poorly thought out. This site has him losing harder than any other . . . it's as if they are buying ads just to have improved bragging rights should they swing the 5% chance win.

We go blue for president, but for state and federal congress it's always interesting to watch. The last time the "hipsters" were complacent the libraries, schools, and emergency services suffered big time with a narrowly passed "tax saving" initiatives. doesn't hurt that the local "hipster" paper (The Stranger) in the I-5 corridor actually calls people who don't vote f***ing idiots, gives lots of reminders, and does endorsements every year.

w/r/t Ore-ag@n vs. Ore-a-gone (@ = schwa), it's simply a regional difference. Plenty of words in English have the pattern (stressed)(unstressed)(-on), and some of them have the final, short-o syllable reduced, like "Washington" or "Harrison", and others have it pronounced as a full vowel, like "Pentagon" or "Mastodon". For "Oregon", both are correct. If you want to sound like you're from the West Coast (at least from the Bay Area northward), say it with a schwa. If you want to sound like you're from anywhere else in the U.S., say it with a full vowel. Neither is wrong.

Nick said...

Something important to note, almost all of Washington is permanent vote by mail. IIRC, all but one county. It's practically Oregon in that regard.

A lot of Washingtonians have already voted.

And it isn't just Starbucks, up here, we have more coffee stands per capita than just about anyone else.

Seattle and 2.5 per 10k people, Bellingham (woo!) has 2.1 per 10k. It's part of the culture, no doubt. (And, no, drive-your-SUV to 'bucks doesn't count.)

Daniel K said...

Yay, my home state! Just to note, no one calls it "Worshington" within the state, only easterners. People who say "worsh the car" rather than "wash the car" will pronounce it that way.

Anyway, yes we're going Obama not because we're black or hispanic or female, but because Washington is full of intelligent people who don't appreciate BS on the campaign trail. We want an honest president, and a smart president. Bush falls into the dumb category and Palin doesn't help McCain's ticket, not to mention the fact that he's slowly losing his mind.

Fear-based politics is also a turn-off. I'm not trying to speak for all Washingtonians, but I really feel like we appreciate respectful politics. That's why I think (hope) Dino Rossi will lose. His negative campaign ads are running non-stop on TV, constantly blaming Gregoire for the state of the economy. We won't fall for it, Rossi is the enemy of education, vote for Gregoire!

This is why McCain will certainly win FL and now PA. It will help in OH as well, but it will be less crucial.

People are going to come out of the Woods to oppose this man.

You are fools to think that Obama will win in a landslide.

The media has filled your heads with mush and you who have been out of power so long have been seduced by the Siren Song of a fringe Liberal whose voice sounds sweetly on your ears but who for the great, silent majority it falls on thankfully deaf ears.

The post misses a few key points about the race here in WA.

This is a state where John McCain is riding the coattails of the down-ticket candidate, not vice versa. There is little enthusiasm out there for McCain, but a great deal of enthusiasm for the Rep. challenger for Governor, Rossi.

This is also a stubbornly "independent" state (well above the median), in that we don't register as members of any political party. We also cling to balloting methods where we can choose from all candidates and parties during the primary, and this routinely throws our primaries into confusion and discord.

The self-identified "independent" nature of the WA voter is questionable though; many of them will tend to vote Democratic even while stubbornly insisting that they are independent. But it's real to some extent, too; numerous state executive positions are held by Republicans. I think a lot of voters will vote for some Republicans whose names they remember and who haven't done anything stupid, just to bolster this internal image as independent.

The upshot is that the downballot coat tails for Democrats may be weaker here than in other states. The incumbent Governor is not particular popular, and her poll numbers have moved very little while Obama's numbers for the state have climbed steadily after the conventions.

And hipsters? Really? That's like assuming that CA is primarily populated by barefoot Berkeley residents, all playing Ultimate.

Jason said...

Last time I checked, Nevada is in the U.S., not Mexico, and we're talking about pronunciation in the English language, not in Spanish. Nevadans and people from nearby say it one way, other Americans say it another way. As with soda/pop/coke, this is difference in regional dialect, not a matter of being correct.

If we take how a word is pronounced in its language of origin rather than how it is pronounced in its adopted language as a guide, then we should all be saying silly thing things like "moan-TAH-nyah" and "cah-lee-FOR-nee-ah" when talking about those states, too. Have you ever been to Norfolk, Virginia? Many locals pronounce it Nah-f@k, with a very Boston-like accent, while the rest of the state pronounces it Nor-f@k (@ = schwa). So I wouldn't assume that the local pronounciation should be considered more "correct".

Meanwhile, in Norfolk, Nebraska, its pronounce Nor-folk, with the l pronounced.

Even if you're talking about regional variations within a language rather than separate languages, would you advise someone named Warren who moves to the Mid-Atlantic coast and finds everyone calling him WAH-r@n rather than WOR-@n to get all annoyed about it, or just to recognize that in that part of the country, that's how the word is pronounced?

That said, their rounding is still off.

Obama 439/924 = 47.51
McCain 405/924 = 43.83

Obama's number should have been rounded up to 48. Instead their top line is 47-44.

You have to look to the laws of each state on party declaration.

I am assuming that where there is a large number, it is in a state that has an open primary and those individuals declare as independent or open.

I think you can just split that vote according to the most recent polls and it will give you a conservative number.

Marion County (Indianapolis) Early Voting "Off the Charts"

From the Indianapolis StarNews

Marion County Clerk Beth White is once again increasing her prediction for early voting based on “off the charts” turnout at three sites open before Tuesday’s election.

She now expects 105,000 to 110,000 county residents will vote before the polls open at 6 a.m. Tuesday. That would be more than one in every seven registered voters. Her earlier predictions had started at 60,000 and later rose to 80,000. In 2004, there were a total of 27,430 early and absentee votes.

Still a three point difference, but I don't see how in the world they get a 47 for Obama and a 44 for McCain.

Their LV is 924 not 889.

Anyway, 43:47 is well within the error limits. Using the currect trend estimate of ~6% margin (from 538, RCP and pollster) and acounting for the 9% undecideds of the FOX poll the expected result is (42.5:48.5) +/-3%. They get 44:47 which is well within the expected range.

None of the polls out there individually have enough statistical accuracy to claim anything about tightening or widening on a daily basis.

Average of recent state level polls (weighted by registered voter population) gives a margin of about 6%, so does the average of a dozen national polls. More sophisticated analysis at this site and elsewhere also point to essentially the same level of margin.

McCain has gained a point in last 10 days or so, no other movement is visible in any publically available data. There is no evidence for any sudden tightening. Relax and GOTV.

The only time I call it 'worshington' is when I am mocking my home state. There is lots to mock, starting with the total lack of foresight in nearly every major decision made by the government, and pride in the crappy traffic(a symptom of the first issue). Incompetence is too kind of a description of the state and local government offices.

That said I have a warm spot in my heart for this state since I was born here and lived most of my life here. Generally nice people, you get a wide extreme of weather(temp in winter >0 and temp in summer > 100 is not uncommon), although it is unpredictable, making outdoor planning miserable. Fishing used to be good, but the aforementioned incompetence has ruined fishing state wide.

I only wish Obama or Biden had come to the east side to help defeat the Palin-like Cathy McMorris. It didn't help that Peter Goldmark didn't run, but I think we can turn the east at least a little blue. After all, this is the seat that former Speaker of the House Tom Foley held.

It is amusing how Worshington State has so many Starbucks(thankfully they are starting to close their far too many stores due to over-saturation and overpricing their low quality swill)and so many Mormons.

Re: the IndyStar Article

Indianapolis has about 750,000 registered voters. 105,000 out early is about a 400% increase from 2004.

In Indiana, you can only determine the total voters and because party ID is effectively dropped as a stat in the general election, you cannot determine leanings without an exit poll.

In 2004, the Presidential race in Marion County went as follows:

Kerry 162,249
Bush 156,321

Total Votes: 318,321 of 621,452 registered voters. 27,430 early and absentee ballots cast.

Forward to 2008:

An estimated 100,000 may vote early and absentee. There are 130,000 more registered voters in the city/county.

Predictions:

Turnout - 475,000

Obama 275,500 (58%)
McCain 199,500 (42%)

If Marion County is above 55% for Obama, the state is done for McCain. Lake County and the other urban areas of the state (Ft. Wayne, Evansville, Terre Haute, Lafayette, South Bend, Kokomo, etc.) will add 75,000 votes to that margin. Those votes account for 90% of the vote in the state since all of the rural communtities have lost so much population since 1980.

In last polling with crosstabs, Obama had a +2 in rural communities.

I can see a 250,000 vote margin for Obama on election night in Indiana.

In fact, I was rear-ended at a traffic signal while downtown a couple years back and on Washington Avenue. The one thing I remember best? The pissed-off driver from the other car chattering into her cell phone about how her brakes went out on "Warshington Street" and how she wanted to eat her mechanic alive.

It's yet another of those local things like the use of the word Hoosier, not for Indianans, but almost as a term that means "redneck." I've seen Sean catch odd looks for that too, lol, but check Slanguage, Wikipedia, or UrbanDictionary to see what I mean. There's also the way the "outside" pronunciation of Missouri is "Mizurry," but locals largely call it "Mizurruh." Don't ask.

And yes, adults here really do ask you where you went to high school when meeting for the first time. I'm a small town native, and that surprised even me.
