Road to 270: Maryland

Today we continue our Road to 270 series with the Old Line State, Maryland.

CHESAPEAKE BLUE, Maryland and its ten electoral votes are among Barack Obama's safest. This is one of the most liberal states in the nation, with every statewide office Democratic-held and both state legislatures holding Democratic super-majorities. Six of eight House seats are Democratic, with only the 1st and 6th CDs held by Republicans. After a series of four single digit elections (Carter '76, Carter '80, Reagan '84, and Bush '88), Maryland has broken Democratic by double digits each of the last four elections beginning with Bill Clinton.

Key Demographics

Note: Factors colored in red can generally be thought to help McCain. Factors in blue can generally be thought to help Obama. Factors in purple have ambiguous effects. Except where otherwise apparent, the numbers next to each variable represent the proportion out of each 100 residents in each state who fall into that category. Fundraising numbers reflect dollars raised in the 2008 campaign cycle per eligible voter in each state. Figures for seniors and youth voters are proportions of all residents aged 18+, rather than all residents of any age. The figure for education reflects the average number of years of completed schooling for all adults aged 25+. The figure for same-sex households reflects the number of same-sex partner households as a proportion of all households in the state. The liberal-conservative index is scaled from 0 (conservative) to 100 (liberal), based on a Likert score of voter self-identification in 2004 exit polls. The turnout rates reflect eligible voters only. Unemployment rates are current as of June 2008.

What McCain Has Going For Him

Honestly, not much. Unemployment is relatively low, the youth population ranks on the lower end of states, and McCain's Maryland fundraising ranks it in the top third of states. In the Appalachian areas of Maryland, the "American" ancestry responses start getting high, but there isn't anywhere near enough population there to compensate for the huge Democratic margins in the BWI corridor. Only four states went for John Kerry by bigger margins, and unfortunately for John McCain it'll be just as tough for him in this blue mid-Atlantic enclave.

What Obama Has Going For Him

Barack Obama has extremely high per capita fundraising in the state, given the number of DC-proximal residents. It's also the 4th highest percentage of African-American vote, the 2d highest percentage of female vote, and the single most-educated state (good job hitting the books, Maryland). It ranks 10th most liberal on the Likert scale, and has the 2d most self-identifying Democrats. Same-sex households by percentage rank in the upper quartile, and there are many more Starbucks than Walmarts. The high education rates lead Maryland to be the 2d highest per capita income state, which doesn't directly correlate with Democratic voting. Obama's favorite TV series, the legendary show The Wire, was set in Maryland. Ah, McNulty, Omar and Stringer Bell, wherefore art thou?

What To Watch For

With no statewide races and the presidential race not dramatic this year, the race to watch is Maryland's 1st district, the Eastern Shore/Baltimore suburban open seat held by Wayne Gilchrest until the Club for Growth primaried him. That primary, against eventual winner Andrew Harris, was so bitter that Gilchrest actually endorsed Frank Kravotil, the Democratic challenger. Gilchrest is not a happy camper, and the race is considered anywhere from lean Republican to toss-up.

“Let's see, the Republican Party, or my eternal soul?" Gilchrest said.

"Party loyalty, or integrity?”
Not a big Andrew Harris fan, is Gilchrest. Every other House seat in Maryland (six Dems, one Rep) is considered safe.

Springfield News Sun endorsement (Ohio)

"You are not better off than you were four years ago. Or eight years ago for that matter.

The Bush administration has put the nation in a tailspin. Its experiments in war, economics and denial of scientific facts have proven disastrous. Its veneer of truth have too often proven to be lies.

This is not a rehash of the past; it is the basis for a decision on the future.

It's time for a change and that change cannot be delivered by the Republican candidate who has voiced no real split with the policies of the Bush years.

The News-Sun Editorial Board is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama as the best hope for the nation to return to prosperity and to regain its standing in the world."

@PeteKent: Less government meddling is what is needed not more.

Capitalism is totally dependent upon the State. Increases in State involvement arise as a direct RESULT of capitalism's failure to work out its own problems.

Without state intervention, capitalism would have fallen a long time ago due to social and political frictions resulting from its nature.

Capitalism has plunged more people INTO poverty than it has rescued. You seem completely ignorant of the complete and utter global chaos and immiseration that this ideology has caused. In your case, you're not ignoring the elephant in the room --- you are praising the elephant for sitting on top of you.

The shit is going to continue to get worse for awhile because capitalism has tipped over into chaos. It can't just tip back again using the same method of lending money to cover bad debt that caused the crisis in the first place. It'll take a long time to reach some sort of equilibrium and we're the ones the ruling class will attempt to squeeze.

I'm on the Eastern Shore, and we get insulted when you DON'T call us a Southern state. Maryland as a state has about 5 separate personalities going on - Baltimore, 1-95 corridor, Western MD, Southern MD and the Eastern Shore. McCain might just win every county on the Eastern Shore, but Frank Kratovil, a Dem, will pull big numbers from this part of MD-01.

The Baltimore slogan is a funny game here in this area. When I moved here it was: "The City that reads"; then "Greatest City in America" and now? I'm not sure, but the BELIEVE campaign was a different initiative by O'Malley - I think to combat the "stop-snitching" domestic terrorists that make law enforcement so difficult.

I propose the slogan: "Baltimore - we're working on it" (too honest for a slogan, I'm afraid)

In fact, it is a much improved city in the almost 20 years I have lived here.

And it is certainly BLUE!

Had the media chosen to dig into these obviously troubling associations and Obama's questionable past, along with the huge gap in his biography, the public would not be judging McCain harshly for having been negative, but rather would have finally turned a jaundiced eye on Obama and perhaps have begun to see him for the dissembling Chicago pol that he is."

But I thought that the "liberal media's" coverage was "backfiring" on Obama rather than "thwarting McCain."

Which is it? Make up your mind, Petekent.

Regarding ACORN (sorry I couldn't jump in earlier)
I daydreamed receiving the following
email from John McCain:

------------------------------
"My friends,

I must apologize for spreading false rumors that ACORN is committing voter fraud.

In reality, their canvassers could turn in a million fake registrations and yet it would not create a single illegitimate vote. It's simple: First, each registration is cross-checked by the registrar, and second, matching identification is required at the polls. If by accident Mickey Mouse's application would not be tossed right away it would still take a miracle for the mouse to show up at the polling station, ID in hand.

My campaign pushed this apparent nonsense because we're now certain that we'll lose this election. Rather than admit that myself and Sarah Palin failed to convince Americans with our policies we figured we'd claim later that ACORN helped the evil Democrats steal the election. Unfortunately, too many voters were able to put two and two together and called our bluff.

But: Let bygones be bygones - I hope you'll trust us again in 2012. Keep us tuned on Fox News!

Sincerely,

John Sidney McCain III

I didnt hear it, but I'm sure I know Chuck's assessment. McCain's only path to victory is Bush '04 minus IA and NM. No other states are possible for him. His team knows this. He has to play defense in Colorado, Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Nevada, North Carolina, Indiana, Missouri, and perhaps a few others. It's his only path whether he likes it or not. Ifhe wastes money and time in PA, MI, MN, WI, NH, ME, it's just wasting money whether he likes it or not. I beleive if the elction were held today, Obama would win or come close to winning these Bush Jr. states with margin of victory in about this order:

Colorado
Virginia
Florida
Ohio
Nevada
North Carolina
Missouri

and McCain would barely hold on in:

Indiana
West Virginia
Montana
North Dakota.

All that being said, I think the state McCain cannot flip without stealing it through VOTER SUPPRESSION is Ohio. This needs to be a big story and needs to be viewed as what it is the desperate McCain campaign trying to steal the election through Ohio. The other states are flippable back to McCain, given the right environmnt for him. Ohio is in the books , unless they figure out how to steal it. They need to be stopped!

Maybe McCain is screwed because of this:

I just got an astounding e-mail from a Republican consultant I know well. He's a guy who's always thought Obama had a "glass jaw," and was always among those agitating for hitting Obama harder.

Recently, he conducted a focus group in an upper-Midwestern state, showing them the kind of ad he thought would work: A no-holds-barred attack, cut for an independent group, which hasn't aired.

I'm just going to reprint his amazed e-mail about the focus group:

Reagan Dems and Independents. Call them blue-collar plus. Slightly more Target than Walmart.

Yes, the spot worked. Yes, they believed the charges against Obama. Yes, they actually think he's too liberal, consorts with bad people and WON'T BE A GOOD PRESIDENT...but they STILL don't give a f***. They said right out, "He won't do anything better than McCain" but they're STILL voting for Obama.

The two most unreal moments of my professional life of watching focus groups:

54 year-old white male, voted Kerry '04, Bush '00, Dole '96, hunter, NASCAR fan...hard for Obama said: "I'm gonna hate him the minute I vote for him. He's gonna be a bad president. But I won't ever vote for another god-damn Republican. I want the government to take over all of Wall Street and bankers and the car companies and Wal-Mart run this county like we used to when Reagan was President."

The next was a woman, late 50s, Democrat but strongly pro-life. Loved B. and H. Clinton, loved Bush in 2000. "Well, I don't know much about this terrorist group Barack used to be in with that Weather guy but I'm sick of paying for health insurance at work and that's why I'm supporting Barack."

I felt like I was taking crazy pills. I sat on the other side of the glass and realized...this really is the Apocalypse. The Seventh Seal is broken and its time for eight years of pure, delicious crazy....

Here's the thing. This election has tunred on three points:

#1 Obama seems competent
#2 McCain seems unqualified to deal with the economy
#3 McCain's pick of Palin makes him look like not only does he not understand things, but he won't choose the right people to surround himself with. She's also scary in her own right as a potential VP.

When it comes down to an election where persuadables need to be persuaded back to McCain you have to ask how it might happen. Can he dent Obama's apparent core competency. Perhaps McCain can. Can he prove that he understands the economy better than he has appeared to recently? Perhaps. That leaves us with the Palin choice. This is a hurdle impossible to climb. He picked her. It was a very bad choice. When people gointo that booth and have to pick a ticket with Palin on it, they just can't do it. I truly believe that no matter how much McCain closes this race, when it comes down to it, Palin is his biggest obstacle and cannot be overcome. Period.

I don't believe history will be recorded properly here. Obama is a great candidate and I believe will be a great President. The country wnats change and he can deliver. "The economy is fundamentally sound" was a sht heard round the world and hurt McCain considerably. But, the iceberg that sunk the ctanic was Sarah Palin. She ought go down as one of the biggest blunders and worst cnadidates in US History. A pathetic choice that should become a verb when describing imploding. You just "palined" yourself dude. This "Who is Barack Obama really?" business and the stressing of ACORN (poor black people registering other poor black people to vote) was a simple tactic designed to black-ify Obama by making moderates and independents view him as the candidate of poor black folks, and not the candidate of middle class white folks (as Obama has so ably positioned himself). It has totally backfired however, by turning his own campaign events into epithet screaming McKlan rallies and turning off the people that the tactic was meant to persuade. Not many people like thinking of themselves as racist. Lost in this is how McCain has totally lost control of his own running mate, who now believes that she's got nothing to lose in all of this and that she's the star of the ticket and possibly really even the actual candidate.

It will come out later that Palin is off the reservation at her own events and subtly (or not so subtly) undermining McCain.

Lugar and Obama clearly get along well. He's my first choice for Secretary of Defense. I'd say State, but Richardson belongs there. Regardless, a prominent Republican in the cabinet would be a good symbolic gesture.

I'll bet $500 that Arkansas goes McCain by at least +10.

Who is Nate kidding having the Natural State as just a +2.3 lean with?

I'd take that bet. Email me for working out details.

The entry way into my 1200 home community is lined on both side without one missing for the whole mile with Obama signs. and no its not a coincidence, its been like that for maybe 2 weeks now. hmm kodak moment? i think thats what I'll do.

You know what I just noticed. Under Sociological there is the Starbucks to Walmart Ratio. It would be neat to see these ratios for each state laid out side by side with the polling. I'm thinking that there is a trend, but I don't want to write it until I look at more of them.
