Today we continue our Road to 270 series with the Last Frontier State, Alaska.
BASTION OF HOCKEY MOMMERY, Alaska was nearly a triple drama this cycle for the first time in many, many years, if ever. Before the Sarah Palin pick, Barack Obama was threatening in Alaska, and might well have closed from the 5-7 point deficit at this time of national sharp movement in his direction. With Palin on the ticket, Alaska is seemingly locked into the McCain column. Though we are very skeptical that VPs “bring” states that the candidate would not otherwise have won as a general rule, in smaller states that get typically get little to no national presidential-level attention the addition of a popular candidate to a ticket can move numbers.
Now what remains in Alaska is one of the most dramatic Senate races this cycle, with Anchorage mayor Mark Begich challenging the indicted Ted “Tubes” Stevens. In Alaska’s lone House race, longtime incumbent Don Young, who is under federal investigation for bribery, faces former Alaska House Minority Leader Ethan Berkowitz in a race Dems are expected to pick up. It’s a messy enough situation that Sarah Palin refuses to say whether she endorses either Stevens or Young.
Key Demographics
Note: Factors colored in red can generally be thought to help McCain. Factors in blue can generally be thought to help Obama. Factors in purple have ambiguous effects. Except where otherwise apparent, the numbers next to each variable represent the proportion out of each 100 residents in each state who fall into that category. Fundraising numbers reflect dollars raised in the 2008 campaign cycle per eligible voter in each state. Figures for seniors and youth voters are proportions of all residents aged 18+, rather than all residents of any age. The figure for education reflects the average number of years of completed schooling for all adults aged 25+. The figure for same-sex households reflects the number of same-sex partner households as a proportion of all households in the state. The liberal-conservative index is scaled from 0 (conservative) to 100 (liberal), based on a Likert score of voter self-identification in 2004 exit polls. The turnout rates reflect eligible voters only. Unemployment rates are current as of June 2008.
What McCain Has Going For Him
Sarah Palin. With that selection, John McCain locked up the state for the Republican ticket, as polls moved from mid-single digits to medium double digits in a blink when the selection was announced. The fact that Alaska has been a Republican bastion since its inception into the Union – save for LBJ’s landslide in 1964 – is also a great starting point. George Bush won here by his 7th largest margin and gun ownership is the 2d highest in the nation. It’s also the number one percentage state for military veterans, and was the 2d lowest Democratic state by self-reporting in 2004.
What Obama Has Going For Him
The fact that Alaska hasn’t been friendly Democratic territory historically didn’t deter Barack Obama from making an attempt in the early going to make a play for this state. Alaska has the smallest percentage of voters 65+ and the 2d largest percentage of youth voters 18-29. Not to mention, Alaska ranks 10th on the Starbucks:Walmart ratio. It’s a fairly well-educated state, and Obama’s fundraising beats McCain’s here by more than 2-1. Unemployment in Alaska is relatively high, and the number of independents here is relatively high. Although Obama has now abandoned the paid organizer effort in Alaska (we met some of them in Nevada), he was the only candidate to even mount a ground campaign, and the DSCC and DCCC have put resources into what would be historic pickups. It's a case where the lower ticket ground game will continue to help Obama overperform past Democratic candidates, even if he doesn't win.
What To Watch For
Democrats have not won a House seat in Alaska since the 1972 plane crash death of Nick Begich, Mark’s father. Mike Gravel, who left office in January 1981, is the last Democrat to serve at the federal level for Alaska’s constituents. This year, Democrats are favored to win both seats.
The other thing to watch in Alaska is the respective legal events occurring for each of these candidates. As they did with Social Security and the US Attorneys scandal, among others, Talking Points Memo has completely owned the story of Alaska Republican Party political corruption, and regular readers of TPM were fully versed in the Alaskan mess long before the announcement of Sarah Palin as VP. If a legal maneuver occurs in any one of those cases (Stevens' indictment, Young's investigation, Palin's Troopergate scandal), you'll find it on TPM.

Wait until the Bradley Effect CRUSHES your dreams, Charles K.
I bet you would be friends with Bill Ayers, too!
"I can also see McCain losing the state if Palin gets indicted,"
_____________________________
Alex S. I do not see any potential indictments here. Showing craptastic judgment (which is what I think happened here) is not a crime. What makes you think she will be indicted?
Admit, Chuckie, you're just a Socialist. You support a Socilist. Someone who wants wealth re-distribution.
kozierok,
You must be a total buffoon to be looking forward to something like that.
"Wait until the Bradley Effect CRUSHES your dreams, Charles K."
It is pretty sad that McCain and his merry followers are counting on racists to win it for him.
I can admit that George W. Bush wasn't a real conservative.
Can you libs also be intellectually honest and also admit that Obama is a leftist? And possibly a Socialist?
"It is pretty sad that McCain and his merry followers are counting on racists to win it for him."
Winning is winning, lib! Go move to Canada!
david,
yeah, your guys are "at least intelligent". That's funny. Arrogant much?
But you're right, when you believe in wealth redistribution, you believe in wealth redistribution. Fuck the fact that the people worked for the money. He'll tax the hell out of it anyways. Now that's real motivation to succeed!
Obama is not even close to a leftist. He is at best slightly left of center.
A socialist? LOL Funny how socialism has come to mean concern for your fellow man to the neo-cons.
"I bet you would be friends with Bill Ayers, too!"
Friend? Wouldn't know until I met him. He would be an interesting person to spend a few hours with.
I'd probably be more likely to befriend him than Sarah Palin. At least Ayers has something between his ears other than notes stuffed there by Steve Schmidt and Joe Lieberman.
Chuckie would rather be friends with a radical 60s terrorist than the next Vice President of the United States.
Says a lot about libs, doesn't it?
P-r-e-s-i-d-e-n-t O-b-a-m-a.
P-r-e-s-i-d-e-n-t O-b-a-m-a.
May November 5th be a day of celebration against you right-wing racists, liars and general fucktards.
Obama demonizes the wealthy and wants wealth redistribution by government force.
He also wants to make everyone dependent on Papa Government, like Chuckie already is living in his parents basement with his worthless Art History degree.
Obama is not even close to a leftist. He is at best slightly left of center.
ROFL!!!!!!!!!!
I nearly fell off my chair with that shittastic line of nonsense.
Actually, I've looked at Obama's tax plan, and it appears that my tax burden (as well as the tax burden of everyone else making less than $142k) will go down, relative to McCain's "FREE MONIES 4 MILYUNAIRS LOLZZZ" plan.
I was really worried that Obama's gloves-on approach during the first debate would negate any 1980-style breakaway; I'm glad to have been proven wrong on that score. As for the mud slinging, there's nothing that McCain can say that Clinton didn't say months ago. If you'd like to see how that worked out, please refer to the Democratic National Convention of 2008.
Side note: color me surprised that Mule Rider is here again acting like an asshole. Really, I don't care what your point is: I stopped reading any post after your name weeks ago. It's improved my 538.com experience exponentially.
To any other right-wing commentators on this site, let his experience be a guide: if you're here to talk numbers or (assuming a big bag of civility) issues, you're more than welcome, but if you're just here to get the attention mommy wouldn't give you, politely troll elsewhere, please.
"Chuckie would rather be friends with a radical 60s terrorist than the next Vice President of the United States."
I never said that. I think Biden is a pretty interesting guy, too.

-Chuck Shumer
Show me that Biafra or Chomsky are not intelligent.
You probably don't know who Biafra is, and Chomsky is only one of the smartest and intellectually accomplished people on the planet.
If you think Obama believes in wealth distribution you aren't even worth conversing with. Because that is as far from the truth. It is Bush who believes in it: A smaller and smaller group of people control a larger and larger amount of wealth. Bush is a corporate welfare advocate who knocks over the middle class and puts a boot in their back and mocks them because they can't get up.
Obama is offering a hand, nothing more.
robby,
why raise taxes on anyone?
cut spending first.
That's my argument. Why is your side's first instinct to raise taxes at all instead of doing that?
"Sorry, oct, it's not you I'm mad at."
MR- you are mad at one person on this board. Why do you have to take it out on everyone else? When you are not insulting everyone, you can make some intriguing points (not that I agree with them). Why do you get so butt hurt all the time?
Why are there so many freeptards here tonight? Did their server buckle under the constant strain of idiocy?
stop the studder,
You don't even know what a liberal is. Obama ain't it.
About Intrade:
As Nate posted a few days ago our friend at intrade is back and manipulating the market. Every few hours he buys McCain up 5 points or so and sells Obama short at the same time resulting in a 10 point swing. Here if the McCain graph over the last day or so. Check out those spikes.
http://www.thewizardline.com/McCain.jpg
david,
you are wrong. the tax rates came down for all under bush. Consumeritus makes people poor. Not Bush tax policy. Trust.
I don't need to hear about your "intelligent" bloviators that you choose to enhance your point of view.
"why raise taxes on anyone?"
It's called the deficit and debt. Duh.
"cut spending first."
McCain isn't advocating any real spending cuts. He just wants to borrow more and more.
He doesn't even want us to leave Iraq. And he'd start more wars too.
Who's going to pay for it, genius?
Oh, and now we gotta walk out the Bradley/Wilder Effect. Again.
::sigh::
Repeat after me: with the exception of several specific demographic groups, Obama outperformed his poll numbers in the later primaries; this is a direct repudiation of the Bradley Effect, which states that an African-American candidate should underperform his poll numbers.
Also, note that Clinton underperformed his poll numbers against Dole in '96; this is most likely the result of a well established phenomenon in which polling data overstates support for the front-runner, irrespective of race.
You're gonna have to do better than that, guys.
david,
you are right. He's not liberal. He's more like a radical, it just so happens that his brand of radicalism (shrouded now for the purposes of being elected) is closely alligned in many ways with liberalism.
Ever wonder why such an "intelligent, well spoken" man stutters so much when off teleprompter? He has to think very carefully about what he says so he keeps the shroud going.
I say release your thesis Barry! Why hide it?
"I was really worried that Obama's gloves-on approach during the first debate would negate any 1980-style breakaway; I'm glad to have been proven wrong on that score."
I think it worked so well because people are tired of the hateful, divisive politics of Bush, Cheney, McCain, and Palin.
The more erratic McCain becomes, the more he falls in the polls, which makes him more erratic, ...
What is funny is how many hateful, ignorant neo-cons have been polluting this website. That is the true measure of how badly McCain is losing.
Democrat Primaries aren't the same as a general election.
It's unprecedented for a black man to be running for President in a general election.
Come election night, it will be crying time for libs.
Oh, seems your pal Sean Scummity had a raving anti-Semite on his little show this evening. Color me shocked.
Scummity and Rush Blowhard and all the others are traitors who have contributed far too much to the rape and destruction of this nation. I look forward to their sad faces on Election night.
Yeah, Chuckie K., come election night you will be all WE WAZ ROBBED BY TEH CORPORASHUNZ!!!!!one1111 take it to the STREETS!!!11111111011
kozierok,
That's totally backwards!!
Obama wants to DOUBLE FOREIGN AID!!! how does that cut the deficit? Instead of doing that, pay the deficit and keep taxes low.
As if raising taxes on the wealthy somehow creates more tax revenue. All it does is turn off people from falling into those punitive brackets. What's the point of being rich if you can't be rich?
"Ever wonder why such an "intelligent, well spoken" man stutters so much when off teleprompter?"
How many times did he stutter during the first debate, you lying piece of shit?
Oooo! I know how McCain is going to cut spending! He's going to cut out all earmarks?
What? Earmarks are only about 1% of the budget? And about half of that is actually useful stuff?
Oh.
"Evolution AND big bang"
If you are a creationist, how does the Big Bang not fit in? A single event that begins time? Can someone explain this to me?
If you want to track what is going on in Ak here are 3 sites, the best being Mudflats:
http://mudflats.wordpress.com/
http://divasblueoasis.com/
http://www.andrewhalcro.com/
These are great resources on all the AK issues...great post in Mudflats on the rallys..
"Obama wants to DOUBLE FOREIGN AID!!! how does that cut the deficit? Instead of doing that, pay the deficit and keep taxes low."
Both candidates' policies have been reviewed by independent groups. Both are not sufficiently responsible, but McCain's is worse. Stop peddling bullshit.
"As if raising taxes on the wealthy somehow creates more tax revenue."
Trickle-down economics is a farce. We cut taxes on the wealthy and the deficit has skyrocketed.
Chuckie K. and Hussein believe in Trickle-Down Government.
"What is funny is how many hateful, ignorant neo-cons have been polluting this website. That is the true measure of how badly McCain is losing."
Yep. Although I have noticed some of the lying asshole phony Democrats have disappeared, which is nice.
I look forward to rubbing these assholes' faces in it on Election Night. They deserve every bit of it, and more.
I love all these people that are keeping track of these obscure irrelevant Maury Povich issues in Alaska. For someone as "dumb" as Palin, why worry about stuff like that? Let her fall on her own sword...or could it be...no...it couldn't be that you think she's a credible threat.
Bush = spend, spend, spend, borrow, borrow, borrow.
My taxes are higher today.
The deficient is at a record high.
Historically, since Truman, taxes have slightly dropped with democrats, borrowing is higher with republicans, and the size of the government is always higher with republicans.
People call Palin a fiscal conservative, yet the stated definition of one is the exact opposite of her actions as Mayor of a Podunk town. Of course, her action fall in perfect harmony with the fiscal conservative actions across the board. Take a ledger that is not in debt and pour red ink all over it.
And I am sorry that you can't find value in intelligent discourse, but that seems to be a hallmark of neo-cons as well.
I have to say that I believe I am one of the most liberal thinking people and yet I do not take issue with what MR is saying "he can teach his kids that homosexuality is against his beliefs" That's no different than a Christian saying that atheism is against their beliefs. That doesn't mean their children will be intolerant of a gay person or an atheist outside of their home. C'mon - sometimes we take gay rights too far and try and impose views and opinions on others that have nothing to do with rights.
What if one or more of Mule-Rider's kids happens to be one of the 10% of the population who is born gay? (assumming he has 2-3 kids, that's about a 1 in 4 chance). Just how messed up are they going to be by this teaching? That's like defending someone who wants to teach their daughters that being female is inherently sinful and means they're automatically a bad person (oh, I forgot, that's called "The Doctrine of Original Sin").
Obama to go after McCain on Charles Keating
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Monday will launch a multimedia campaign to draw attention to the involvement of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the “Keating Five” savings-and-loan scandal of 1989-91, which blemished McCain’s public image and set him on his course as a self-styled reformer.
"It's unprecedented for a black man to be running for President in a general election."
It would be unprecedented for you to make a logical argument based on facts rather than on your racist bullshit.
Bush = spend, spend, spend, borrow, borrow, borrow.
My taxes are higher today.
The deficient is at a record high.
Historically, since Truman, taxes have slightly dropped with democrats, borrowing is higher with republicans, and the size of the government is always higher with republicans.

And I am sorry that you can't find value in intelligent discourse, but that seems to be a hallmark of neo-cons as well.
Now that the gloves are off McCain can go after BHO on Rezko, Ayers, Wright, his illegal foreign donations, and his secret connections to the Muslim Pakistani Chandoo Brothers.
It is good that McCain's record is coming out. Especially the Keating 5 "incident".
I have to wonder though, does anyone not know that McCain was in bed with that thief?
kozierok,
Wrong wrong and wrong.
Biden said in the debate that Obama wants to double foreign aid. Maybe it does for you, but that doesn't help my "kitchen table".
Trickle down is not a farce. It creates jobs and more importantly, keeps alive the incentive to succeeed. Why try and succeed if you are just going to be punished by high taxes for it? You'd be better off sitting on your ass and collecting your Obama "I'm a poor little ole' victim" entitlements package!
stop the stutter
Obama's gonna raise taxes on people making more than 250k a year, i.e., the people who got tax cuts under Bush when the economic climate did not warrant it. It's the fiscally responsible thing to do.
As for tax cuts for the under $125k crowd, it makes sense to me: give tax cuts to the people who spend the largest share of their income (the poor and the middle class), keep it roughly the same for the people who are making it (the $75k to $125 consort), and raise it for the people who can afford it.
It's not like Bill Gates is gonna wake up one morning and say, "oh, my taxes just went up 10%; I guess I'll stop making millions of dollars selling shitty software." Progressive taxation allows for the maximum societal benefit from tax revenue with the minimum tax burden on those who for whatever reason can't find a job with a six-figure salary.
Spending cuts? Not a bad idea, but you gotta come with specifics. What government program is worth less than a millionaire getting a new Mercedes? I'm sure if we pored over the federal budget, we could come up with a couple good candidates for the axe, but you're not gonna come up with the $410 billion that the government estimates that we'll be in the red come the end of the fiscal year, and you're certainly not gonna do it while tossing free money at the people who need it least.
For me, the sensible solution would involve fiscal responsibility (repeal the Bush tax cuts) and economic stimulus from the bottom up (tax cuts for the poorest Americans, who are less likely to put it in a saving account and more likely to put it right back in the economy).
(and j/k Bill Gates you know I still love you.)
david,
how in the hell did you manage to get higher taxes?
Mine are only higher because I've made more money lately. Did you do the same?
"I love all these people that are keeping track of these obscure irrelevant Maury Povich issues in Alaska."
Says the moron who keep screeching about Bill Ayers. LOL.
Charles,
I'm still practicing 'President Obama' and it still sends chills up the spine. Someday I will really believe it has happened in my lifetime.
RWC, somewhere in the past posts is Nate's analysis of the Bradley effect for this election. You might also want to find the one on polling cell phones.
I believe Palen could be indicted for interfering with the Worker's Comp decision for her former brother in law if the rest of the testimony supports the charge. I've done WC case management in CO and AK. Not sure exactly how it would play out but it is clearly an abuse of her office.
Let me bring a little more medicine into the food fight on all us 'socialists'. The fact is I started voting for Dick in '72 because the folks were solid GOP. Went for Carter in '76, moved to AK in '80 and voted Libertarian then and '84 (not a throw away vote in deepest red AK) Got rejected by the AK GOP in '88 because I didn't quote and tote a Bilbe. (This is the basis of my distrust for the ADN.) Went to the Dem caucuses and discovered, to my very Objectivist surprise, that Dems are Americans too. They just understand that humans are imperfect and very very vulnerable.
Being an RN for three decades, health care is sort of a HUGE issue for me. It has to be single payor. Obama is not there yet. We (even the MDs are 59% for single payor) will push it until we get it. Single payor is not socialized medicine. Anyone who thinks that is clueless. Think of what Medicare did to American medicine. Once seniors had the money to pay for health care, the innovations, new drugs and massive care started flourishing. From the time I had decided to become a Dr in '62, to starting pre-med in '70, the whole system was unrecognizable.
The real killer here is that America's BEST system of medical care - as in percentage points above the others in out comes- is the VA. The vets do NOT want the VA privatized. The VA is socialized medicine. The hospitals, all facilities and employees are run/emloyed by Uncle Sam. (Don't confuse Walter Reed with the VA.)
Sometimes the low info comments around here are enough to make me want to abuse alcohol. (I usually throw it on rocks. Shaking is second best)
"Trickle down is not a farce. It creates jobs"
Yes, we can all see how well it is doing on that count, can't we. LOL.
"Rezko, Ayers, Wright, his illegal foreign donations, and his secret connections to the Muslim Pakistani Chandoo Brothers."
Rezko- No proof, just innuendo, old news
Ayers - Overblown old news that will blow up in McCains face
Wright-Old irrelevant news
Foreign donations - Doesn't even rise to farce.
secret connections to the Muslim Pakistani Chandoo Brothers - LOL
This just shows that McCain has nothing else, no substance, nothing. Hate and division is all he is peddling. Which is why he is losing.
Western Pennsylvania.
Southeastern Ohio.
Southwest Virginia.
Colorado Springs.
All areas BHO had trouble in in the Democrat primary against Hillary, and can't win in the general. And therefore, will not win the general
Laugh at the Chandoo Brothers, but it will be THE October surprise, mark my words Socialist libs!
"A single event that begins time? Can someone explain this to me?"
What is to explain?
Everything in the universe is expanding, with no evidence that it has ever been different. That leads logically to the big bang.
The plan to steal the next election:
http://markcrispinmiller.blogspot.com/2008/09/spoonamore-reveals-plan-to-steal-next.html
"All areas BHO had trouble in in the Democrat primary against Hillary, and can't win in the general."
Yeah, just like he won't win California, because Hillary won there. And McCain won't win in Kansas because Huckabee beat him there.
You pay a grade-schooler to turn on your PC for you, right?
You'd be better off sitting on your ass and collecting your Obama "I'm a poor little ole' victim" entitlements package!
To exactly what 'entitlements package' do you refer?
I thought not.
Wait until Joe Sixpack in Uniontown, PA, hears about Muhammad and Ali Chandoo!
Hey, I wonder if the Bradley Effect still exists...let's go to Google...
http://election.princeton.edu/2008/09/27/the-disappearing-bradley-effect/
Polls did show a significant Bradley/Wilder effect through the early 1990s, which includes the period when Bradley and Wilder were running for office. However, Hopkins notes that the effect then went away in races from 1996 onward. To quote the study: “Before 1996, the median gap for black candidates was 3.1 percentage points, while for subsequent years it was -0.3 percentage points.”
Question answered! Moving on.
"All areas BHO had trouble in in the Democrat primary against Hillary, and can't win in the general. And therefore, will not win the general"
LOL
Hillary is different than McCain, you can't extend the primary results to the general election.
The conventional wisdom was that Obama couldn't win over women as well. So much for that theory, of course McCain choosing a total moron for a VP helped Obama.
Mc9Cain: "Sometimes we take gay rights too far. . ."
This is an offensive remark! Because a group of people expects the SAME rights as the rest of us they are taking it "too far?"
Wow.
Substitute African American, women, Latino, Native American, or any number of other descriptors in there, and see how it sounds.
"Wait until Joe Sixpack in Uniontown, PA, hears about Muhammad and Ali Chandoo!"
I wonder what Joe Sixpack in Virginia thinks of McCain's brother calling them all communists?
Google the Chandoo Bros., libs, and try not to cry.
@David
Nice, way to work in the gratuitous Jello Biafra reference.
You are correct that the right wing hacks are all a product of Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes. They are the best (or worst) examples of media advertising and deregulation.
BTW if you don't believe me look at Roger Ailes resume and tell me where he worked before taking over Fixed News.
McCain doesn't really want to get nasty.
He knows he's playing with fire if the Democratic 527s decide to let loose on everything from his angry, petulant, spoiled, boy-prince attitude, to his abject mediocrity (in school, in the navy and w/r/t his intelligence), to his gross incompetence on the USS Forrestal that killed 134 Americans, to his repeated acts of adultery, to his abominable treatment of his first wife, to his ties to Charles Keating and the banking crisis of the 80s (how do you think that will play in the current environment), to the fact that "maverick" really just means he can't get along with anyone, to....
McCain doesn't really want to do that.
McCain's turn to character assignation and gutter politics, while expected, offers tactical problems for Obama. How do you keep your campaign focused on a positive economic message while at the same time defending yourself against this nonsense?
The MSM will cover these attacks wall to wall because calling someone a "Terrorist sympathizer" is outrageous enough to get headlines. Counter-attacking with Keating-5 while necessary, gets you further away from the economy where you want it. It will be interesting to see when someone in the media starts to call this what it is:
Racially tinged misleading attacks who's ultimate purpose is to scare voters into believing that the black man named Barack Hussein Obama is "Not who he says he is."
Obama is a liar.
Obama is not who he says he is.
Obama doesn't believe in the same America as you and me.
Obama is a radical.
Obama's father was a muslim.
Obama cannot be trusted.
Obama is black.
This is what the McCain camp means with their new line of attack. How effective it is depends on a few factors:
(1)Have the American people seen Obama enough to trust him
(2)Are the American people mature enough to call this what it is, bullshit.
(3)Are the economic conditions so worrisome that the economy trumps all.
The jury is out as to whether or not this will change the election dynamic. It's sure to rally the right wing, but McCain's already got their vote. Independents and conservative democrats are the key. Are they past their "Worries" about Obama's background or not. By the end of this week we will have a good idea where this is going, and how Obama is going to counter. It will be an interesting final 30 days.
Never mind Chandoo, what about Vindaloo?
Nothing better than a good Vindaloo.
Chuckie is the typical arrogant lib.
This thing will be TOO CLOSE TO CALL going into election day, and McCain will win it narrowy.
Socailist Libs like Chuckie will scream FARUD! THEY STOLE IT!
So do we get to pick on Palin's witch hunting pastor?
Or how about the fact that McCain didn't seem to have a problem arming and training Bin Laden and Saddam in the 80's?
Or that he didn't think Bin Laden was a threat in '98?
With the economic climate, the Keating 5 would drown him by itself.
Or the fact that the day after McShame voted for the bailout, he said Bush should veto it. McCain has 0 credibility anymore, and that is the bottom line.
Alaska.
Georgia.
Louisiana.
Tennessee.
West Virginia.
All areas JSM had trouble in in the Repuglican primary against Huckabee, and can't win in the general. And therefore, will not win the general
Yeah, pretty stupid reasoning, huh?
"This thing will be TOO CLOSE TO CALL going into election day, and McCain will win it narrowy."
He's going to win a narrowy? What's that?
Hope that makes him feel better about losing the election. ;)
"Jello Biafra"
Is he on the teevee now? I really liked his music when I was a kid.
"Nice, way to work in the gratuitous Jello Biafra reference."
It is always better with Jello :)
Democrat candidates are very POOR closers.
Republicans are GOOD closers.
BHO won't hold on, he can't. and it will be TOO CLOSE TO CALL and you libs will be shitting your pants! LOL!
RWC,
what will you do if that doesn't happen?
One of the "bestest" things about this election is going to be the weeks after it. Seeing the mindless right-winger droids crying and moaning will be fun. But watching them turn on "war hero" McCain and especially Caribou Barbie -- that will be priceless.
""Jello Biafra"
Is he on the teevee now? I really liked his music when I was a kid."
He has been on Oprah once or twice, slamming the vile Tipper Gore.
He does lots of performances and has been nominated in one or two states for president by the Green Party, not sure if he is this time.
Doing good work with The Melvins lately.
It WILL happen. No "ifs" about it.
President-Elect McCain and Vice President-Elect Palin agree!
"Trickle down is not a farce."
That statement is a farce. I prefer the term "trickle on" economics.
Liberals prefer Trickle-Down Government!
robby,
you just have a way different philosophy and set of life experiences than I do, I guess.
I see many poor people that are poor because of their own volition. They don't give two shits about saving. They just want their nails done and an outfit to go to the club. Screw paying the electric bill or working a few extra hours at a job to get off government housing.
I also see people who are trying to move up in the world, who are regulated and taxed into high hell, raising many obstacles to starting any kind of self-sufficient upstart business.
Obama could give a crap less about helping people start businesses successfully. He just wants to give to the helpless Americans (oxy-moron we all know) who are hungry for hand-outs.
"Republicans are GOOD closers.
BHO won't hold on, he can't. and it will be TOO CLOSE TO CALL and you libs will be shitting your pants! LOL!"
Obama has been running a large campaign very smoothly.
McCain can't go a single day without drama.
Yeah, people are going to start supporting an erratic liar.
"Trickle down is not a farce."
And nearly 30 years of it failing to trickle anything down but pain doesn't count as farce?
It has failed, it is dead. Deal with it.
West Virginia.
I can think of another candidate that had a rough primary there.
Tax hikes kill the economy.
"I see many poor people that are poor because of their own volition. They don't give two shits about saving."
How the hell can poor people save anything when the cost of living is skyrocketing in no small thanks to trickle down economics and the endless incompetence of the Bush administration.
david,
are you serious?
Even the most poor and destitute Americans have cell phones and nails painted and manicured. Even those who are the biggest losers, have to work hard to avoid getting a job.
Just a question, do you live in the real world?
david,
you are a socialist who is not worth trying to converse with.
"Bush policies" have led me from near bankruptcy to almost a six-figure income this year. Without a college degree.
Prepare to be SWIFTBOATED, libs!
ialex,
no, i do not live in your world of the daily manufacured crisis.
STS,
the better question is do you? You don't know shit about the real world. In the real world - which is to say, the world of housing projects, payday loans, minimum-wage jobs, and relatives who are dead, missing, or unwilling to help - you'd be bent over a trashcan while the locals fucked your pansy ass.
"What is to explain?
Everything in the universe is expanding, with no evidence that it has ever been different. That leads logically to the big bang."
I was unclear. Even if you are a creationist, I do not see how the Big Bang would be inconsistent with that world view. I wanted someone to explain to me what/if the evangelical objection to the Big Bang theory is. Do you have insight on it?
For the record, I am definitely not a creationist, nor do I disagree with the Big Bang theory.
I am having trouble understanding morons like stop the stutter who bleat on about lower taxes. We had a $500,000,000,000 deficit this year. That's a tax my 11 year old daughter will be paying off.
The conservative hero Milton Friedman wrote that increased debt is essentially an increase in taxes. And it is the most regressive tax of all -- on the unborn.
By the way, it was great seeing Mule Rider back here once again making an ass out of himself -- once again. Reminds me of a story about Harry Truman, when he tried to mount his horse and the horse tried to flick a horsefly and wound up with a hoof in one of the stirrups. Truman looked at the horse and said "If you want to get on I'll get off." Mule Rider is riding himself these days. An ass on an ass.
"He has been on Oprah once or twice, slamming the vile Tipper Gore."
I almost voted Nader over Tipper, even though I was in a safe Gore state. I just thought Bush was too dangerous to take even the slightest chance. Sigh, talk about being proved right.
I've lived in rural Alaska for 26 years, and one of the things the survey misses is that Alaska is 15% Alaska Native. They tend to vote Democratic, as does rural Alaska in general, Juneau and parts of Anchorage and even Fairbanks. While McCain/Palin will likely carry the state, and Palin is generating some enthusiasm just for being a homegirl, everyone I know was stunned by her selection and believes she's completely out of her league.
In the Alaska context, Palin is an urban politician, from an exurb of Anchorage. Except for the scenery, you could drop Anchorage (or Los Anchorage as we call it)and its burbs into any western state with weak zoning and they wouldn't be out of place.
One of the odder things about the Republican Palin madness is the "small town virtues" nonsense. I live in a small town, Dillingham, and I expect it to go for Obama by a modest margin. Alaska used to be a Democratic or Democratic leaning state, until the pipeline brought in lots of oil industry people.
By the way, we own guns because we hunt, and we hunt to put food in the freezer. Nothing odd or particularly Republican about that.
Don Young will likely lose to Berkowitz, but Stevens/Begich is a toss-up that probably will be decided by the outcome of his trial. I think Begich could win anyway, but if Steven is acquitted he would likely get a bump that would last through the election. I've heard a lot of people who would normally support Stevens who think he's just too old to be running again.
Palin's reputation is also tanking in Alaska, and I suspect she'll have real problems as Governor if she loses the national election. Troopergate is a big deal, and she's burned a lot of bridges with both sides of the aisle in the legislature. Yes, the last poll I saw had her with a 66% approval rating, but among people who actually pay attention to state politics its much lower than that.
"I can think of another candidate that had a rough primary there."
But which candidate needs WV?
I guess we just have to see what happens on November 4, won't we? How about you and I meet on this site on November 5 and if McCain wins I will freely admit that America clearly agrees with you, and if Obama wins, you have to admit that either Obama is not a socialist or that America wants to be socialist. Deal?
"Even the most poor and destitute Americans have cell phones and nails painted and manicured."
I called the one of the men who live under the freeway underpass near my house on his cell phone yesterday but he did not answer. Do you know why he did not answer? Because he doesn't have a cell phone and his manicure looked terrible.
Your comment was very ignorant to the real suffering going on out there. I am sorry that you lack any empathy. It might make life easier, but it makes you worthless in my eyes and the eyes of many people who actually care about other people.
stop the stutter
About West Virginia: I was making a point, namely that a loss in the primary does not necessarily predict (or even presage) a loss in the general.
If Obama were having problems with Hillary's key demographics (women, older voters, middle-class WASPs), you might have a point, but frankly, everything has played out exactly as the "Obamacons" (or whatever the crap the people at Hillaryis44 were calling us) said it would: Clinton's supporters were disappointed, look at McCain, realized they disagreed with him on practically every issue, and decided to vote for their party's candidate (as us "Obamacons" would have had Clinton won the primary).
As for our different experiences, I've been blessed and grew up in an upper middle-class suburb, but after college I moved into the city and saw poverty firsthand. Yes, there are people making bad choices, but they are for the most part trying to do better for themselves with the limited resources they have available.
Senator Obama just wants to give them a little more; Senator McCain wants to give that money to rich people like the ones I remember growing up with. It's not that they're bad people, it's just that they don't need it as badly.
Oh, and as a side point, I do expect Obama to lose West Virginia, but not because he lost it in the primary.
"I was unclear. Even if you are a creationist, I do not see how the Big Bang would be inconsistent with that world view. I wanted someone to explain to me what/if the evangelical objection to the Big Bang theory is. Do you have insight on it?"
Apologies for misunderstanding you.
I have been trying to figure it out myself. Since neither theory says anything about the existence, or non-existence of God, I find it odd that some religious people get offended.
It should be obvious that God didn't snap his fingers and things magically appeared. Further, it should be obvious that the laws of physics and chemistry apply to a being that is part of the universe, even if our understanding may not be perfect.
The only thing that makes sense and is supported by empirical evidence. Those people who are religious and educated have no real issues with them. It is the uneducated, religious people who generally have the issue, because they don't fully understand them. There are certainly exceptions to both rules, although I suspect the educated people that rail against it are just kowtowing to the flat earth society for some odd reason.
The problem is that a minor, but very loud sector of Christianity(Dobson, Wildman, people like mule rider, etc although I don't think they are Christians in any sense) make waves about it and get all offended just to get offended. To this sector, outrage sells.
"you are a socialist who is not worth trying to converse with.
"Bush policies" have led me from near bankruptcy to almost a six-figure income this year. Without a college degree."
That explains it and there is no need to say that you are uneducated. That was obvious from your incoherent rantings.
So you profited from some shameful Bush act, warmongering perhaps?
That doesn't make it right.
Of course you can't see that you needed Bush to help you, you couldn't make 6 figures on your own.
Obama will make it possible for everyone with brains and self-drive to be able to succeed. No wonder you oppose him.
I am not a socialist, nice try though. I am a capitalist that realizes that greed needs external control. The US economy is in the toilet and states that you would consider socialist(even though they aren't-morons like you don't understand what it means) are doing better than us.
Odd that.
On a side note, it appears state employees will now testify in the Alaskan legislature sponsored Trooper-Gate inquiry.
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/state_employees_will_honor_tro.php
"On the heels of the dismissal of the Alaska attorney general's suit to quash subpoenas issued in the legislature's Trooper-Gate investigation, seven subpoenaed state employees who had previously said they would not cooperate with the probe have now agreed to testify.
From the Anchorage Daily News:
"Despite my initial concerns about the subpoenas, we respect the court's decision to defer to the Legislature," [Alaska Attorney General Talis] Colberg said. "We are working with Senator Hollis French to arrange for the testimony of the seven state employee plaintiffs."
French has said they still expect the investigation's report to be completed by this Friday."
Is this another game-changer?
We should fear that we don't live in a democracy any longer. The cyber security with current voting machines is in the bronze age and paid GOP computer hackers alter results going from polling stations to district offices which total the results. Also, GOP members in office are purging voters in VA, MO, and LA. Please see the videos and sites below, then call the Obama campaign to express your concern and voice your opinion (especially if you are a contributor like I am) and tell them you want something done about it.
Obama campaign number is 1-866-675-2008 and press option 6 to speak to a volunteer. They are answering the phone 7 days a week.

Please act somehow in whatever way you are comfortable with doing. I hope these sites and videos educate you on what is really going on with the GOP and that we need to do something... anything, except sit idly behind our keyboards.
