Road to 270: Alaska

Today we continue our Road to 270 series with the Last Frontier State, Alaska.

BASTION OF HOCKEY MOMMERY, Alaska was nearly a triple drama this cycle for the first time in many, many years, if ever. Before the Sarah Palin pick, Barack Obama was threatening in Alaska, and might well have closed from the 5-7 point deficit at this time of national sharp movement in his direction. With Palin on the ticket, Alaska is seemingly locked into the McCain column. Though we are very skeptical that VPs “bring” states that the candidate would not otherwise have won as a general rule, in smaller states that get typically get little to no national presidential-level attention the addition of a popular candidate to a ticket can move numbers.

Now what remains in Alaska is one of the most dramatic Senate races this cycle, with Anchorage mayor Mark Begich challenging the indicted Ted “Tubes” Stevens. In Alaska’s lone House race, longtime incumbent Don Young, who is under federal investigation for bribery, faces former Alaska House Minority Leader Ethan Berkowitz in a race Dems are expected to pick up. It’s a messy enough situation that Sarah Palin refuses to say whether she endorses either Stevens or Young.

Key Demographics

Note: Factors colored in red can generally be thought to help McCain. Factors in blue can generally be thought to help Obama. Factors in purple have ambiguous effects. Except where otherwise apparent, the numbers next to each variable represent the proportion out of each 100 residents in each state who fall into that category. Fundraising numbers reflect dollars raised in the 2008 campaign cycle per eligible voter in each state. Figures for seniors and youth voters are proportions of all residents aged 18+, rather than all residents of any age. The figure for education reflects the average number of years of completed schooling for all adults aged 25+. The figure for same-sex households reflects the number of same-sex partner households as a proportion of all households in the state. The liberal-conservative index is scaled from 0 (conservative) to 100 (liberal), based on a Likert score of voter self-identification in 2004 exit polls. The turnout rates reflect eligible voters only. Unemployment rates are current as of June 2008.

What McCain Has Going For Him

Sarah Palin. With that selection, John McCain locked up the state for the Republican ticket, as polls moved from mid-single digits to medium double digits in a blink when the selection was announced. The fact that Alaska has been a Republican bastion since its inception into the Union – save for LBJ’s landslide in 1964 – is also a great starting point. George Bush won here by his 7th largest margin and gun ownership is the 2d highest in the nation. It’s also the number one percentage state for military veterans, and was the 2d lowest Democratic state by self-reporting in 2004.

What Obama Has Going For Him

The fact that Alaska hasn’t been friendly Democratic territory historically didn’t deter Barack Obama from making an attempt in the early going to make a play for this state. Alaska has the smallest percentage of voters 65+ and the 2d largest percentage of youth voters 18-29. Not to mention, Alaska ranks 10th on the Starbucks:Walmart ratio. It’s a fairly well-educated state, and Obama’s fundraising beats McCain’s here by more than 2-1. Unemployment in Alaska is relatively high, and the number of independents here is relatively high. Although Obama has now abandoned the paid organizer effort in Alaska (we met some of them in Nevada), he was the only candidate to even mount a ground campaign, and the DSCC and DCCC have put resources into what would be historic pickups. It's a case where the lower ticket ground game will continue to help Obama overperform past Democratic candidates, even if he doesn't win.

What To Watch For

Democrats have not won a House seat in Alaska since the 1972 plane crash death of Nick Begich, Mark’s father. Mike Gravel, who left office in January 1981, is the last Democrat to serve at the federal level for Alaska’s constituents. This year, Democrats are favored to win both seats.

The other thing to watch in Alaska is the respective legal events occurring for each of these candidates. As they did with Social Security and the US Attorneys scandal, among others, Talking Points Memo has completely owned the story of Alaska Republican Party political corruption, and regular readers of TPM were fully versed in the Alaskan mess long before the announcement of Sarah Palin as VP. If a legal maneuver occurs in any one of those cases (Stevens' indictment, Young's investigation, Palin's Troopergate scandal), you'll find it on TPM.

robby,

you just have a way different philosophy and set of life experiences than I do, I guess.

I see many poor people that are poor because of their own volition. They don't give two shits about saving. They just want their nails done and an outfit to go to the club. Screw paying the electric bill or working a few extra hours at a job to get off government housing.

I also see people who are trying to move up in the world, who are regulated and taxed into high hell, raising many obstacles to starting any kind of self-sufficient upstart business.

Obama could give a crap less about helping people start businesses successfully. He just wants to give to the helpless Americans (oxy-moron we all know) who are hungry for hand-outs.

"Republicans are GOOD closers.

BHO won't hold on, he can't. and it will be TOO CLOSE TO CALL and you libs will be shitting your pants! LOL!"

Obama has been running a large campaign very smoothly.

McCain can't go a single day without drama.

Yeah, people are going to start supporting an erratic liar.

"Trickle down is not a farce."

And nearly 30 years of it failing to trickle anything down but pain doesn't count as farce?

It has failed, it is dead. Deal with it.

West Virginia.

I can think of another candidate that had a rough primary there.

"I see many poor people that are poor because of their own volition. They don't give two shits about saving."

How the hell can poor people save anything when the cost of living is skyrocketing in no small thanks to trickle down economics and the endless incompetence of the Bush administration.

david,

are you serious?

Even the most poor and destitute Americans have cell phones and nails painted and manicured. Even those who are the biggest losers, have to work hard to avoid getting a job.

Just a question, do you live in the real world?

david,

you are a socialist who is not worth trying to converse with.

"Bush policies" have led me from near bankruptcy to almost a six-figure income this year. Without a college degree.

STS,

the better question is do you? You don't know shit about the real world. In the real world - which is to say, the world of housing projects, payday loans, minimum-wage jobs, and relatives who are dead, missing, or unwilling to help - you'd be bent over a trashcan while the locals fucked your pansy ass.

"What is to explain?

Everything in the universe is expanding, with no evidence that it has ever been different. That leads logically to the big bang."

I was unclear. Even if you are a creationist, I do not see how the Big Bang would be inconsistent with that world view. I wanted someone to explain to me what/if the evangelical objection to the Big Bang theory is. Do you have insight on it?

For the record, I am definitely not a creationist, nor do I disagree with the Big Bang theory.

I am having trouble understanding morons like stop the stutter who bleat on about lower taxes. We had a $500,000,000,000 deficit this year. That's a tax my 11 year old daughter will be paying off.

The conservative hero Milton Friedman wrote that increased debt is essentially an increase in taxes. And it is the most regressive tax of all -- on the unborn.

By the way, it was great seeing Mule Rider back here once again making an ass out of himself -- once again. Reminds me of a story about Harry Truman, when he tried to mount his horse and the horse tried to flick a horsefly and wound up with a hoof in one of the stirrups. Truman looked at the horse and said "If you want to get on I'll get off." Mule Rider is riding himself these days. An ass on an ass.

I almost voted Nader over Tipper, even though I was in a safe Gore state. I just thought Bush was too dangerous to take even the slightest chance. Sigh, talk about being proved right.

Bruce in AK said...

I've lived in rural Alaska for 26 years, and one of the things the survey misses is that Alaska is 15% Alaska Native. They tend to vote Democratic, as does rural Alaska in general, Juneau and parts of Anchorage and even Fairbanks. While McCain/Palin will likely carry the state, and Palin is generating some enthusiasm just for being a homegirl, everyone I know was stunned by her selection and believes she's completely out of her league.

In the Alaska context, Palin is an urban politician, from an exurb of Anchorage. Except for the scenery, you could drop Anchorage (or Los Anchorage as we call it)and its burbs into any western state with weak zoning and they wouldn't be out of place.

One of the odder things about the Republican Palin madness is the "small town virtues" nonsense. I live in a small town, Dillingham, and I expect it to go for Obama by a modest margin. Alaska used to be a Democratic or Democratic leaning state, until the pipeline brought in lots of oil industry people.

By the way, we own guns because we hunt, and we hunt to put food in the freezer. Nothing odd or particularly Republican about that.

Don Young will likely lose to Berkowitz, but Stevens/Begich is a toss-up that probably will be decided by the outcome of his trial. I think Begich could win anyway, but if Steven is acquitted he would likely get a bump that would last through the election. I've heard a lot of people who would normally support Stevens who think he's just too old to be running again.

Palin's reputation is also tanking in Alaska, and I suspect she'll have real problems as Governor if she loses the national election. Troopergate is a big deal, and she's burned a lot of bridges with both sides of the aisle in the legislature. Yes, the last poll I saw had her with a 66% approval rating, but among people who actually pay attention to state politics its much lower than that.

Jen said...

"I can think of another candidate that had a rough primary there."

But which candidate needs WV?

I guess we just have to see what happens on November 4, won't we? How about you and I meet on this site on November 5 and if McCain wins I will freely admit that America clearly agrees with you, and if Obama wins, you have to admit that either Obama is not a socialist or that America wants to be socialist. Deal?

Jen said...

"Even the most poor and destitute Americans have cell phones and nails painted and manicured."

I called the one of the men who live under the freeway underpass near my house on his cell phone yesterday but he did not answer. Do you know why he did not answer? Because he doesn't have a cell phone and his manicure looked terrible.

Your comment was very ignorant to the real suffering going on out there. I am sorry that you lack any empathy. It might make life easier, but it makes you worthless in my eyes and the eyes of many people who actually care about other people.

About West Virginia: I was making a point, namely that a loss in the primary does not necessarily predict (or even presage) a loss in the general.

If Obama were having problems with Hillary's key demographics (women, older voters, middle-class WASPs), you might have a point, but frankly, everything has played out exactly as the "Obamacons" (or whatever the crap the people at Hillaryis44 were calling us) said it would: Clinton's supporters were disappointed, look at McCain, realized they disagreed with him on practically every issue, and decided to vote for their party's candidate (as us "Obamacons" would have had Clinton won the primary).

As for our different experiences, I've been blessed and grew up in an upper middle-class suburb, but after college I moved into the city and saw poverty firsthand. Yes, there are people making bad choices, but they are for the most part trying to do better for themselves with the limited resources they have available.

Senator Obama just wants to give them a little more; Senator McCain wants to give that money to rich people like the ones I remember growing up with. It's not that they're bad people, it's just that they don't need it as badly.

Robby said...

Oh, and as a side point, I do expect Obama to lose West Virginia, but not because he lost it in the primary.

David said...

"I was unclear. Even if you are a creationist, I do not see how the Big Bang would be inconsistent with that world view. I wanted someone to explain to me what/if the evangelical objection to the Big Bang theory is. Do you have insight on it?"

Apologies for misunderstanding you.

I have been trying to figure it out myself. Since neither theory says anything about the existence, or non-existence of God, I find it odd that some religious people get offended.

It should be obvious that God didn't snap his fingers and things magically appeared. Further, it should be obvious that the laws of physics and chemistry apply to a being that is part of the universe, even if our understanding may not be perfect.

The only thing that makes sense and is supported by empirical evidence. Those people who are religious and educated have no real issues with them. It is the uneducated, religious people who generally have the issue, because they don't fully understand them. There are certainly exceptions to both rules, although I suspect the educated people that rail against it are just kowtowing to the flat earth society for some odd reason.

The problem is that a minor, but very loud sector of Christianity(Dobson, Wildman, people like mule rider, etc although I don't think they are Christians in any sense) make waves about it and get all offended just to get offended. To this sector, outrage sells.

David said...

"you are a socialist who is not worth trying to converse with.

"Bush policies" have led me from near bankruptcy to almost a six-figure income this year. Without a college degree."

That explains it and there is no need to say that you are uneducated. That was obvious from your incoherent rantings.

So you profited from some shameful Bush act, warmongering perhaps?

That doesn't make it right.

Of course you can't see that you needed Bush to help you, you couldn't make 6 figures on your own.

Obama will make it possible for everyone with brains and self-drive to be able to succeed. No wonder you oppose him.

I am not a socialist, nice try though. I am a capitalist that realizes that greed needs external control. The US economy is in the toilet and states that you would consider socialist(even though they aren't-morons like you don't understand what it means) are doing better than us.

Odd that.

On a side note, it appears state employees will now testify in the Alaskan legislature sponsored Trooper-Gate inquiry.

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/state_employees_will_honor_tro.php

"On the heels of the dismissal of the Alaska attorney general's suit to quash subpoenas issued in the legislature's Trooper-Gate investigation, seven subpoenaed state employees who had previously said they would not cooperate with the probe have now agreed to testify.

From the Anchorage Daily News:

"Despite my initial concerns about the subpoenas, we respect the court's decision to defer to the Legislature," [Alaska Attorney General Talis] Colberg said. "We are working with Senator Hollis French to arrange for the testimony of the seven state employee plaintiffs."

French has said they still expect the investigation's report to be completed by this Friday."

Is this another game-changer?
