Actually, that seems a bit more newsworthy and credible than many of the things that Drudge posts. And here we all thought that Obama had the youth vote all sewn up!

brooklynkevin said...

LMAO!!!!! Now THIS is just what I need first thing in the morning! Thanks, Nate, for all you do.

Of course, these early polls don't hurt my morning attitude, either:

Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby, Obama +8
PA, Morning Call, Obama +10
NJ, Quinnipiac Obama +23
IL, Chicago Tribune, Obama +24

And away we go!

Hmmm. Useful information for advertisers, I guess. What do you think it means -- maybe that more Repubs have cable TV?

DC Sox Fan said...

this is great news for john mccain...(I don't even have the energy for caps and exclamation points...)

Jesse Radin said...

This poll was drudgebotted or freeped.

Was the nick poll taken online?

crash32583 said...

What remains to be seen is whether Republican and Democratic toddler voter turnout will be equally impacted by the "Naptime Effect".

Wesley said...

The republicans may not get as big of a gain out of this as they had previously hoped. Apparently, before this poll was taken they were working to keep people under 18 from voting.

newsfromOH said...

I just saw the moveon moose ad on TV here in Ohio. That should scare the toddlers away from Sarah.

Jesse Radin said...

I think part of this could be because of the extremely liberal parents who inaccurately think TV/sugar are evil and don't let their kids watch it/choose not to own a TV.

In California there are a lot of those who think that if you give your child sugar at all you are a horrible parent.

the undomiciled sophisticate said...

this is what happens when paranoid parents lurk over their kids' shoulders when their surfing the interwebs. it must be stopped.

New McCain electoral strategy:

1. Win 2004 Bush states -IA -NM -VA -CO to get to 252 EV.

2. Reverse 10 point polling deficit to win PA and 273 EV.

3. Everyone gets a free pony.

Note: Free pony may have to be distributed in PA prior to election .

Green-Guard said...

WOW! Even kids realize that Obama will make a better president than MCCain... (drudge must be running out of ideas!)

P.S Am I the only one to find drudge absolutely appaling not only content-wise but also format wise? I mean, that place is like a huge pile of dung one on the top of the other... At least rcp and Free republic are neatly arranged.

Sam said...

I went to the site. Quite amazing heh, to think that is newsworthy.

But heck, its tame compared to some other rubbish on these blogs out there.

Anyway, I visited the nickolodean site, and it was basic "how we elect presidents" stuff, not the strict polling we've come to be used to.

Nonetheless, it did make my day.

I must add, I think that the chance of John McCain winning now (approx 6%) is roughly the same as an unexpected "gamechanger".

That's quite ironic.

Terry said...

Unfortunately it could be reflective of the attitudes at home. I am constantly worried about this being much closer than the polls suggest.

Mike said...

If McCain could only postpone the election until those kids grow up, he might...well, he might not lose by as much as he would on Nov 4.

Sam said...

Here is a question for you all.

HOW CAN MCCAIN POSSIBLY WIN, AND WHAT MUST HAPPEN TO DO SO?

e.g. Terroist attack perhaps...

Your answer

assmole said...

I think both candidates can take something away from this result.

Lei'nad Rendies said...

I'm particularly upset they didn't include such venerable third party candidates as Kermit (whose flush with green in the form of big dollar donations), Humpty Dumpty (whose taken a big fall in the polls recently), or Mother Goose (whose laid a big, fat 0 in the last projection).

Nate, please consider factoring in what you believe these legitimate contenders might have done to a real poll.

Rob Hayward said...

I think you guys have all missed the point.

And OBAMA IS IN FRONT!!!

Ha Ha Ha HA HA HA HA HA !! HA

Sam said...

Another thing, you know with the bellwether states. E.g. Missouri.

Does 538 place a special category for them. Because Missouri is several points behind Obama's average, and he can easily win (in a closer fashion) without it.

Aren't these states meant to be more in line with polling to be, as John King points out, a "show me" state?

DCDemocrat said...

Poor Grudge.

Matt is old school

Jesse Radin said...

McCain can win with a few things:

1. Stock market rebounds a lot, unemployment goes down.

2. Terrorist attack on US soil and Obama looks unprepared.

3. Biden says something racist again.

Though 3 would probably not be enough considering Palin's rallies.

Obama can win even further (400+)

1. Stock market crash

2. McCain/Palin bring out the GAY MARRIGE BAN AMENDMENT, which around 55-60% of americans oppose. Americans are now split on Gay marriage, and two thirds support civil unions. If they play the gay marriage moral value card, they will lose Indiana, North Dakota, and Montana. Especially if someone talks about McCain cheating on his wife.

3. More "anti-america" "pro america" crap.

4. Underestimate the youth vote, meaning Obama wins states like Indiana, WV, MT, ND, even GA, and gets within 5 in Texas and AZ.

Does this mean McCain is going to be "Slimmed" now?

Question for Nate or anyone who knows:

How do the pollsters take into account the fact that many people have now voted early?

And if the bulk of the early voters were enthusiastic Obama supporters wouldn't this skew the remaining sample?

Matador said...

Obama down to +10 in Morning Call tracking. He was +16 five days ago. Fact is, +10 is probably way overstated.

So where is Obama's presence in Pennsylvania? At least have Biden there 4 days out of the week. We should also be reading that he is spending $10 million a day on TV there. Losing PA is the only POSSIBLE way Obama can blow this. It should be priority #1, #2, and #3 for the campaign. Why don't they seem to understand that?

And please do something to counter the "Joe the Plumber" B.S. What happened to "instant response?" Thye campaign has let McCain go unchecked on this crap for a solid week, and it's working, esp in places like PA. What is so hard about countering with a strong message based on FACTS, like explaining in clear everyday language that Joe is a fraud and doesn't represent the working class in the slightest, in fact, he's the poster boy for the trickle down sucker? Take on the argument head on. It's gold. McCain is extolling Bush's economic ideology, and the public is falling for it hook, line, and sinker. You can't beat the "trickle down helps everybody" line at this point? Please, DO SOMETHING!

They'd need to lower the age to 5, but block those between 13-17.

Even if by some miracle, McCain gets to within 3 in Pennsylvania, he hits a hard wall. At his post-convention peak, he wasn't able to take a single lead in the state. Just like Bush was never able to win the state after spending a huge amount of time and resources there.

Actually, the nickelodeon poll makes perfect sense. Imagine that kids simply pick who their parents say they're going to vote for, and thus actually reflect the voting public with children who watch nickelodeon. Now not all adults will have children at the right nickelodeon-watching age. Mostly it will be households with children 7-13. The voting adults in this household are probably between the ages of 35-44, a much more conservative group than the voting public as a whole. Furthermore, these families are probably more likely to live in a suburban area, be well-off enough to own and watch a TV, and to be well educated. In short, the poll is representative, but only of a certain sector of the US population

Cugel said...

Reminds me of when I was a wee lad back in 1960! There was a voting booth outside the main voting hall in our town where kids could vote (in Lancaster PA). The voting tally was open so you could see that Nixon was stomping Kennedy badly -- mainly due to Republican kids who voted again and again!

Just like in real life!

I remember being shocked at how badly Kennedy was doing until my parents told me that it didn't count!

Now today, McCain is pinning his hopes on Lancaster county and other rural Pennsylvania counties to be just as redneck and stupid as those kids in 1960.

Could happen too, but it's not the way to bet!

It seems the race has not tightened. I am surprised by this fact. If it doesn't tighten by the middle of next week, I think the GOP will be demoralized entirely.

Also, if McCain's strategy is now PA, why are they telegraphing it? You would think 'stealth' would be the mode of choice. The leaks coming from the McCain campaign strike one as either duplicity or utter incompetence.

You basically announced to the Obama campaign that they should send the Clintons to PA in the last week and Obama on the lost days to sew up a Democrat-leaning state.

I have no inside knowledge, but I suspect there are some high-level GOP who secretly want McCain to lose so they can gear up with "one of their own" in 2012. There are way too many leaks right now for me to think otherwise.

-Socialist lil’ bastards.

-Wow that’s close! President Kerry—er-— Senator Kerry blew President Bush away in 2004!

This is very encouraging.

-Believe it or not, kids tend to be a good indictator of how their parents will ultimately vote.

The race has tightened slightly from Obama's big lead last week. Even this site is seeing it - but its not anywhere close to what McCain would need to win.

And in fact the tightening is showing up as you would expect it to - undecideds deciding that they cant vote for the guy in the lead. The slight gains McCain had made last week were almost all his numbers recovering from their lows, not Obama losing people.

Case in point - he has been above 50% in Rassmussen for 26 days now. Same with Gallup registered, and he has never dipped below 49%, even in the Gallup "traditional" LV.

The worst part for McCain is that becuase of the EC - he probably has to get a national lead of 1-2% to even have a shot.

Drudge is relatively harmless, but I am concerned that he is inciting conservative militancy, just like the Palin/McCain rallies were last week. I have read more and more reports of effigy hangings, tire slashing, and car destroying. The next step is you know what. I am afraid that there are enough nutjobs with guns out there to have a very very ugly incident take place in the next couple of weeks, not to Obama but to one of the campaign's volunteer canvassers. If that does happen, I hope the media absolutely excoriates the GOP for inciting hatred and violence in this country, and that it will never be able to recover its good name.

andrew said...

It makes me so incredibly happy that this site exists to endlessly mock the drudge report. Everything they post is so unbelievably asinine...now there's someone to call bullshit. Thank you.

And one comment on McCain's latest erratic hail mary strategy. If Bush couldn't win PA in 2004, at nearly the height of his popularity and in the midst of a still-then popular war, against a lackluster marginal candidate, how could his senile mind believe he'll win it in 2008 against the most exciting democratic candidate since Kennedy? As he stopped taking his dementia medicine?

About McCain's Pennsylvania strategy: Seems stupid to me, but then McCain has to try something. What I don't see is why Colorado where McCain is within 4% is worse for him than Pennsylvania where he's down at least 10%!

I believe McCain's move is NOT driven by internal polls showing him within striking distance! It's simply based on electoral math!

He simply needs the 21 EV in PA if he's going to lose Kerry States and VA, CO, IA and NM (total: 286 EV).

If he wins PA, then he can afford to lose BOTH CO and VA, (Kerry-252 + IA(5) + CO(9) + VA (13) = 286 - PA(21) = 265, so McCain wins!

(But this only works if he doesn't lose any other states: NC, FL, OH, IN, GA, ND, NV).

ozzie said...

PA has no early voting. The inside numbers on early voting for the McCain campaign must look really bad if they are betting on winning PA instead of CO. Maybe they think they have great Republican GOTV in PA?

Either that, or he actually likes Obama as he hinted in the summer with his pro obama bias but he knows his audience is angry conservative men, so he has to play to them

My opinion on PA, is that McCain and his campaign have conceeded all but conceeded the race, but they cant give the impression that the race is over or there will definitely be an EMBARRASSING landsled.

PA is the big Blue state that they initially targeted to turn Red. I think they are continuing the fight in PA in order to give the perception that they are still playing offense until the end. Its only a symbolic "play" for PA. And after pulling out of Michigan, its no way they can pull out of PA quietly without demoralizing the party.

Nam Vet Joe From Jersey said...

Agree cugel---there is no way for McCain to win without flipping PA. He can win every toss up state that would bring him to 252 EV. I don't think there is another state that can get him to 270+

Cugel said...

It occurs to me that the REAL lumps in McCain's Metamucel are that even if he wins PA, he will STILL be sunk by losing MO or NV.

He's losing in NV and MO right now, but he's in the sweet land of denial, just like he is in GA.

BTW: Making a big effort for Georgia helps organize Democrats in that state and will make it more competitive for years to come even if Obama loses, as is likely.

I do think he needs to send Joe Biden back to Scranton for a few days though and tour around the state drawing huge crowds.

Hey guys, I've been mulling over a question and I would love some of your insightful analysis:

Now that McCain's camp has all but declared CO "unwinnable," what effect will that have on the voters in that state? Will Republicans just stay home? Will undecideds automatically break for Obama, reasoning that McCain doesn't even want them? If a candidate says he's pulling out of a state, is it all but a sure thing he will then lose the state?

Thanks.

My parents are democrats, my brother is a democrat. Please, don't put any more Drudge items on your page, this is the 3 one that has been a complete waste of your time. By the time I was 5 (1990) I hated Republicans. I didn't know much, but my parents talked badly about the Republicans. I didn't like saying the Pledge of Allegiance because it had "Republic" in it, and that reminded me of Republicans.

Until I was in my teens and read things online, I assumed Ronald Reagan was considered one of the worst presidents ever by everyone, since my mom would always talk about his quadrupling the debt. It really confused me that he was worshiped by so many when I found out.

I think the kids actually had to vote online for this one though, on Nick's online site or mobile service. Or, freepers/drudgers found the poll and voted McCain too.

I expect McCain to announce shortly that he's NOT pulling out of Colorado, even though he secretly is!

When he pulled out of Michigan he STUPIDLY ANNOUNCED IT! Palin even created MORE publicity and controversy when she criticized the decision.

Result? Look at the polling in Michigan since then! Both Quinnipiac and Rasmussen have Obama +16%! A total Blowout in a state Kerry only carried by about 2%.

I don't think McCain will actually publicly pull out of Colorado, nor will the media confirm it. He could leave his advertising in place here to give a fig-leaf to prevent the media from talking about how impossible it is for him to win and start throwing around terms like "desperate" "Hail-Mary" "unlikely scenario" or "last-ditch play."

If the media starts talking about how this McCain is conceding this and that state and how much of a "long-shot" his chances are, lots of Republican voters who don't really like McCain that much to begin with might well shrug and stay home.

Tom Hughes said...

OK, but what do the cross tabs look like?

Ian Monroe said...

@Cugel limited advertising isn't a figleaf for staffers being pulled out. If that happens, the local press will report it as a pullout.

Keeping your staff, but limiting ad-buys might work though. (As thats not really pulling out then.)

Grandpa: I'm not sure.
Kiddo: Well, you have to vote for Barack Obama or John McCain.
Grandpa: Well, I'm not voting for John McCain.
Kiddo: Then you have to vote for Barack Obama. Those are your only choices.
Grandpa: I think I'll vote for you!
Kiddo: No, Grandpa! I'm not on TV and I'm only a kid!
Grandpa: Well... then I'll wait until you're older and vote for you then.
Kiddo: (sigh) okaaaay. Then I can be on TV.

We've been trying to explain what's going on to her, but it's pretty funny nonetheless. A couple weeks ago, she told me she wants Obama to win because "I agree with his politics."

The McCain campaign played up the immigration issue to get those numbers. Apparently, anti-'Dora the Explorer' sentiment runs high amongst the Nick jr voting bloc.

jblueep said...

I'm a republican, and I realize that Obama is very likely to win this election.

However, I wonder if this Nickelodean poll should be so quickly dismissed for the following reasons:

1. First of all, Nickelodean kids are not toddlers. They are 7 to 12 year olds who pay attention to what their parents are talking about much more than parent realize. For this reason, they are likely to parrot what their parents believe.

2. A lot of Christian conservatives (a very reliable voting block) do not have TVs, or if they do, do not have cable, and if they do have cable, strictly limit what their kids watch. I would think that the Democratic weighting (for their parents) would be pretty high, certainly greater than 50%.

I realize that this is not a scientific analysis, but I'm not sure it should be dismissed as a joke.

Finally, even though I desperately want Obama to lose this election, if he is elected, he will be MY president.

@jblueep:

well, there's more than 3 million kids in this country, and idk that evangelicals restrict nickelodeon viewing (i mean are they really gonna be like Ned Flanders and block out everything but religious channels? lol), and kids born to a lower economic class are less likely to watch tv or go online in the first place, so I think it undercounts the kids of parents who support Obama in that regard.

Chris Andersen said...

Sounds to me like some McCain people took it upon themselves to pretend to be kids and call in to "vote" for McCain. I just have a real problem imagining that many kids going out of their way to vote for McCain.

flwyd said...

The first vote I ever cast was in kindergarten in 1984. The teacher drew two smiley faces on the chalk board with an R (for Regan) under one and an M (for Mondale) under the other. I voted for the R because i thought it looked like a better stick figure body than an M. (As it turned out, this wasn't too different from the reasons man adults voted for him.)

A few years later (during the Iran-Contra hearings), I started picking up on a sense that Regan was a bad guy and I worried that my vote helped him get elected.

jblueep said...

@Nick,

You would be surprised how many Ned Flanders there are out there. The fact that I know who Ned Flanders is shows that I'm not one of the them :)

Interesting point about lower income. You might be right, although even the poorest people seem to have cable or satellite these days. And the TV tends to be a babysitter in lower income situation, where both parents work all the time.

I wonder about the influence of teachers to. Sometimes that influence is bigger than the parents (as far as face time with the kids anyway). Most of the teachers I know are Democrats. I don't know how many use their teaching pulpit for politics, but surely some of it must come out intentional or not.

3 Million is pretty big sample size for a poll. But, it's an internet poll, so it might be totally useless.

It will be interesting on election night so see if there is any credibility to it.

Nick said...

@jblueep

yeah, you're right, there are alot of Ned Flanders' out there, but at least where I live (Maryland), the evangelicals I meet aren't thaat restrictive

And yeah, youre right that it is surprising how many lower-income families have (or have had at some point) some form of cable service, but still this was an internet poll, and at least where I live most lower-income kids don't have computers, and so the libraries are always filled with kids using the computers. So access is still an issue.

As for most teachers being democrats, that's prob true, but I went to a high school where most of the teachers were republicans and the democratic teachers were afraid to speak their minds (some actually swore me to secrecy). Every day the republican teachers would go on long rants about welfare or something stupid and Id call them out on every falsehood - yeah, they loved me there :p

I was worried at the time cuz it seemed like they were having an effect on the students' political views, but now that Im in college I've found that alot of the people I knew in hs who said they were republicans have become democrats due to family and friend influences, so in the end teachers dont matter.

and yeah, 3 million is a big sample size for a poll, but being internet-based we all seem to agree its undercounting some groups. I remember during the 04 election the school system for the county I live in had EVERY student (as in it was mandatory unless you chose to opt out of it) "vote" for Kerry or Bush. Kerry actually did 8 points better with that "vote" than he did with the county as a whole. Now that's a representative sample :p

Zahlman said...

Come on, guys, this one is easy to explain. Ever since "Kerry's crack about McCain wearing adult diapers", it's a lot easier for the kids to relate to him. ;)

Eh. Whenever high and middle schoolers get "polled" in Canada, the left-wing parties do WAY better than they do among the adults. But kids... sheesh... idk.
