On the Road: Wilmington, North Carolina

Hillary Stookey wouldn't tell us her age. "60 and holding" and a big smile was all we got. But on her birthday, Hillary Stookey canvassed Wilmington, North Carolina for Barack Obama from 1:30 until 8:00 pm.

That's three hours past the time the Republican office had closed.

I-40, End of the Road - BrettMarty.com

Stookey, a British citizen and Rhode Island resident, came down to North Carolina because her son, Ben Stookey, 28, lived nearby in South Carolina. She'd done the same in the primary.

Her "conservative" husband David had earlier called her from Rochester, New Hampshire -- where he was also canvassing for Obama -- to wish her a happy 60-something before he knocked his own first door of the day. Work demands meant his battleground state had to be closer to home. "You can do anything you want on your birthday," Stookey recalled her husband's words. She did.

"Single minded," chuckled her son. Indeed, since she began canvassing in Lebanon, New Hampshire during the primary, Stookey has become something of a doorknocking addict. When she first walked into the Lebanon field office, "the energy was huge. The variety of people just blew me away." People were coming all the time from different places. A woman from Florida, two brothers from Virginia, a young man from Iowa who showed up following Obama's caucus win there. "His mom had had breast cancer. He drove all night from Iowa. I was astounded."

When she started thinking of applying more elbow grease to the election, "I think it really occurred when he lost New Hampshire," Stookey told us. "I have to do more."

So she began making trips. South Carolina in the primary, where her son lived, was first. "I got back from South Carolina and said to my husband, 'I really want to help.'" She even pointed out some of her gray hair, laughing that she purposely let it look gray to convince voters that some in Hillary Clinton's demographic were indeed supporting the Senator from Illinois. "The minute the primary was over I got my hair done."

From there, it was Pennsylvania, and phonebanking from home into North Carolina and Indiana. Wherever she went, Stookey collected new canvassing partners. The woman in South Carolina who'd driven from California to do two days and drove back. The older man with a pickup truck from West Virginia. A lawyer from Texas. "She was very quiet," Stookey remembered. In Pennsylvania, she canvassed with Cynthia Johnson, a photographer for Bush 41 who told Stookey of the first time she met Bush's son W. It was on an escalator, apparently, and the younger Bush wanted to move past. "Move it or lose it, lady," was the introduction.

As for her British accent, had that led to any pushback? No, she said. "I've used that sometimes," to show how important she believed this election to be.

"Every day has its challenges," Stookey said of her now many days knocking doors. In Wilmington, numbers on doors were sometimes difficult to see, sometimes they weren't concurrent or had randomly large gaps ("One house would be #19, and the next house on my list would be #423, but it was the next house"). She hadn't yet tallied the data to count her knocks, but she had what appeared to be twenty pages of names and houses with data dutifully recorded.

Wrightsville Beach - BrettMarty.com

In her countless experiences at the doors, had she heard racist comments? She mentioned several incidents in New Hampshire at the doors, in South Carolina with one young white man, and in Indiana over the phones during the primary. Ugly comments included, "They're n***ers. They all stick together." And: "I won't change. He's black. You think I'm going to vote for a black man?"

Undeterred, the graceful Stookey emphasized that this was work anyone could do. "It's the people you meet that you canvass with that makes this experience so exhilerating."

"Every day, Barack Obama gets up and is brave," she said. "I can be brave."

Brilliant analysis of WHERE McCain is picking up strength by the Research 2000/Daily KOS tracker: http://www.openleft.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=9513#121338

Check it out! It confirms exactly what I thought! McCain is picking up ground in states that are NOT battlegrounds where Obama is not advertising or campaigning. Specifically check out this movement:

Northeast:

October 25th: Obama: 64% - McCain: 30% Obama +33%
October 29th: Obama: 60% - McCain: 36% -- Obama +24%
McCain gain: 9%

Midwest:

October 25th: Obama: 52% - McCain: 40% Obama +12%
October 29th: Obama: 52% - McCain: 42% -- Obama +10%
McCain gain: 2%

South:

October 25th: Obama: 41% - McCain: 51% Obama -10%
October 29th: Obama: 38% - McCain: 55% -- Obama -17%
McCain gain: 7%

West:

October 25th: Obama: 51% - McCain: 39% Obama +12%
October 29th: Obama: 53% - McCain: 41% -- Obama +12%
McCain gain: 0%

So, McCain has gained 7% in the Northeast where it will do him absolutely NO good at all, because he's not going to win any of those states anyway!

McCain has gained 7% in the South, where it will do him SOME good -- if he gained 7% in Florida and North Carolina, the only competitive Southern states! But, from the state polling he's LOST ground in Florida where Obama now leads, and he's at most gained a few points (3% or 4% at most) in North Carolina. Not much comfort there.

In the Midwest -- where McCain DESPERATELY needs help, he's gained 2% and narrowed Obama's lead from 12% to 10%. He's apparently lost ground in Ohio, gained some in Indiana and moved up perhaps around 7% in PA, but he's still a long way from winning PA. Ohio if anything has moved AWAY from McCain. Indiana is now leaning McCain, which is small comfort to him.

In the West there's been no net gain for McCain at all. He's toast in all the Western states he's losing (CO, NM, NV, CA, WA, OR) and still winning all the western states that don't matter: (AZ, UT, ID, MT, WY). Probably his gains in some red western states is balanced by losing ground in Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico, all of which are moving away from him in the state polling.

This analysis shows why McCain is doomed even if the daily tracker moves into a virtual tie!

Republicans will get their shorts into a lather about the "tightening polls," but it just won't matter what the water-heads in Mississippi or Tennessee think about anything and McCain getting even more of these morons won't help him on election day!

And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: "Holy Jesus! What are these goddam animals?"

Yes, well, a being community organizer is sort of like being a small town mayor...except you can actually win an election!"

My grandmother was a community organizer. She developed something called the South East End Neighborhood Development. Factories had moved into her neighborhood and fled during the early 80's. What they left behind after they had moved to wherever, was a groundwater that was filled with toxic chemicals that would kill you dead if you drank it.

She lived in something that was originally a chicken coop. My grandfather had built it out into something sort of like a two-bedroom house.

No one could sell these houses because everyone knew they had poisonous well-water. You were just stuck either drinking and bathing in poison and no one sane was going to buy these things.

She gathered petitions, badgered the hell out of people until Reagan's EPA finally set up a trailer there to cut checks to hook up city water and try and figure out something to do with the groundwater. It took years. It took grit. It took the power of not giving a shit who said "no" to you.

If you don't respect that, you aren't a citizen. You are a slave.

did you make it to the midnight rally in Kissimmee with Bill & Barack & tens of thousands of us ?

what a night !!! truly a once in a lifetime type of event

Bill Clinton at his finest hour perhaps ?

can't wait for your report & Brett's photos

wish you couldea watched it from my vantage about 50 yards in front of the podium in the sea of diverse citizens of FL & the world

even met foreigners in town for the attractions who HAD to come for this amazing night

my favorite memory was a small 9 y/o latino boy [Alex] with his family that I bumped into [literally] before the speeches started when the crowd surged forward...

he had no chance to be able to see over the literal sea of taller humanity - but he was excited & waited patiently

I asked his mom if she had figured out a way to let him see both Bill & Barack when they came out on stage

I offedrred to hoist him up during their speeches if he weighed under 50 lbs so I would not kill my back

he said he weighed only 70 lbs, so I figured out that if I knelt down with one leg to the side bent at 45 degrees that he could step up on my knee and see over the crowd in front of us

he tried & it worked & he got super enthusiastic

of course all the short people asked if they could use my knee as a stepstool too

anyway, after Bill started to speak, Alex got up with this HUGE smile & bright wide eyes of wonderment that he could see a POTUS right in front of him

later when Bill passed off to Barack & the crowd settled down a bit, I let Alex up again for figuratively the site of our next POTUS, a man of color, and the boy was estatic as he towered over the crowd

he even got to take photos from up above as he had a better view than ANYONE around us for a minute or so

I have no doubt that for this young lation boy it will truly be a memory that will inspire him & last a lifetime

it also was something special for me to be able to literally give a deserving young person a leg up on a cold clear night in central FL where we got to see history in the making

I forgot to take a picture of Alex in all the excitement - but I wish I had because it was something special indeed

I am a retired white female public school teacher in SC. Today I plan to make at least 5 calls to Florida voters to get out the early vote for OBama. I believe that OBama is the best hope for our children's future.

For Jen - Barstow is in the picture because Wilmington is one end of Hwy 40 and Barstow CA is the other end.

If anyone is in Wilmington tomorrow (Friday) some of the locals are planning a Halloween march for Barack starting at the Reel Cafe.

We're trying really hard here folks, if you're in a swing state get on the phone and help us make some calls. I think NC is going to be awfully close and I won't be the least bit surprised if it reports late because people are still in line. We've had 30% of registered voters vote already.
