“We arrived in St. Louis at noon. I took a walk down by the Mississippi River and watched the logs that came floating from Montana in the north – grand Odyssean logs of our continental dream.”
– Jack Kerouac, “On the Road”
The meat of this post is below the slideshow, and it’s about the McCain ground game. It's probably going to make a little stir.
Our apologies in advance to the Obama organizers and volunteers who aren’t going to get the full justice they deserve in this post. They believe Missouri is going blue this year, and they’re working their bodies into the ground to make that happen.
We’re getting used to this relentless Obama operation: organizers trained in both tactics and campaign culture, working so hard they have trouble remembering what happened 48 hours ago – it’s too distant – and convinced that if they stay in their lane and trust the structure it’ll pay off in the end.
Obama has 40 offices now open in Missouri, and Justin Hamilton, Obama’s Press Secretary for Missouri, told us that while he couldn’t confirm below or above the published reports of 150 organizers (it didn’t come from the campaign), the campaign is only adding to its ground force. Organizers have now recruited 2500 neighborhood team leaders statewide, folks who do the far more effective work than any 30-second ad or yard signs, actual face-to-face contact and persuasion of their neighbors.
For a Democrat to win Missouri, he or she has to follow the Claire McCaskill map, which is win the blue urban centers in Kansas City and St. Louis city by wide margins, hold down the losses in outstate Missouri (McCaskill spent huge time in and around Springfield, and got to 42% there while Kerry only managed 37%), and then win highly populated St. Louis County (20% of Missouri’s overall vote) by enough votes to hold on for a win. McCaskill won St. Louis County by 12, Kerry only won it by 9. Barack Obama beat Hillary Clinton in the County, 63% to 36%.
Something interesting is happening with John McCain’s campaign. Up until now, we’ve had no trouble gaining access to field offices and volunteers. Here in St. Louis, we were told by Tina Hervey, Missouri Republican State Party Press Secretary, that she had never heard of FiveThirtyEight, and while they trusted Politico, we were people who they had to decide whether we “shouldn’t or don’t need to be talking to.” (McCain’s Missouri press secretary actually works out of Iowa, and did not return calls or email.) I told Tina that’s not a story we wanted to write, that this was our first Republican resistance, and that while she may not have heard of us, we’d probably go over 2.5 million site visits this week, now that we’re regularly past 400,000 per weekday. I told her I’d hold off writing her flat refusal and give her the opportunity to change her mind.
No budging. We were told that we’d be asked to leave public field offices we now attempted to visit. We did not get any promised follow-up helping get access to the post-debate Palin rally last night, and we were locked out. Hmm.
Let’s be clear. We've observed no comparison between these ground campaigns. To begin with, there’s a 4-1 ratio of offices in most states. We walk into McCain offices to find them closed, empty, one person, two people, sometimes three people making calls. Many times one person is calling while the other small clutch of volunteers are chatting amongst themselves. In one state, McCain’s state field director sat in one of these offices and, sotto voce, complained to us that only one man was making calls while the others were talking to each other about how much they didn't like Obama, which was true. But the field director made no effort to change this. This was the state field director.
Only for the first time the other day did we see a McCain organizer make a single phone call. So we've now seen that once. The McCain organizers seem to operate as maître Ds. Let me escort you to your phone, sir. Pick any one of this sea of empty chairs. I'll be sitting over here if you need any assistance.
Given a choice between taking embarrassing photos of empty phone banks, we give McCain’s people the chance to pose for photos to show us the action for what they continually claim we “just missed.” No more. We stop into offices at all open hours of the day, but generally more in the afternoon and evening. “Call time,” for both campaigns, is all day, but the time when folks over 65 are generally targeted begins in late afternoon and goes til 8 or 9pm. Universally, McCain’s people stop earlier. Even when we show up at 6:15pm, we’re told we just missed the big phone bank, or to come back in 30 minutes. If we show up an hour later, we “just missed it” again.
The McCain offices are also calm, sedate. Little movement. No hustle. In the Obama offices, it's a whirlwind. People move. It's a dynamic bustle. You can feel it in our photos.
Up to this point, we’ve been giving McCain's ground campaign a lot of benefit of the doubt. We can’t stop convincing ourselves that there must – must – be a warehouse full of 1,000 McCain volunteers somewhere in a national, central location just dialing away. This can’t be all they’re doing. Because even in a place like Colorado Springs, McCain’s ground campaign is getting blown away by the Obama efforts. It doesn't mean Obama will win Colorado Springs, but it means Obama's campaign will not look itself in the mirror afterward and ask, "what more could we have done?"
You could take every McCain volunteer we’ve seen doing actual work in the entire trip, over six states, and it would add up to the same as Obama’s single Thornton, CO office. Or his single Durango, CO office. These ground campaigns bear no relationship to each other.
Here on out, our skepticism is going to be higher. We truly respect organizers on both sides, because it is grindingly hard work for minimal pay. It’s powered by a belief in doing what’s right. We do not quote them or get them in trouble. Moreover, we truly respect direct action by volunteers – who do exist on the McCain side, just as a tiny, tiny fraction of the Obama side – but if the attitude continues on this unhelpful and obstructive turn, we’re going to spend less time making excuses for what we observe. Less benefit of the doubt. Show us real work and we'll cover it. We want to.
We'll be up in Chicago tonight making Nate pound RCP shooters. Then, Indiana. There's a huge story unfolding in Indiana.

This article about the grossly uneven sizes of the Obama ground operations and McCain ground operations are certainly heartwarming. But don't assume that means a near-total lack of campaigning for McCain. It's just that the majority of the cheerleading for McCain is happening outside the field offices and campaign headquarters. Places like lots and lots of church functions, VFW posts, etc. Lots of McCain campaigning going on - just not at the phone banks or canvassing of neighborhoods and the like.

Josh,
The point is the VP in the US has two functions and two functions only. #1 Be President if the President is incapacitated #2 Break a tie in the Senate
That's it. End of story. Cheney has so much power because Bush doesn't have a clue or care in the world, so he let's whoever wants power take it. The Veep is the most power hungry and in the best position to take it since he's part of the Executive branch and GW likes to twiddle his thumbs in Crawford and do whatever his boss Mr. Cheney says. The Veep only has as much power as the Prez gives him/her. In Cheney's case, from 2000-06 Congress was Republican, so they let him wield power. Palin would be a eunuch with a Dem. Congress as VP. Far moreso than what you're seeing currently with Bush/Cheney, they would treat her like a toddler that is interrupting something important. They'd just brush her aside. She could not accomplish anything she might like to. All 535 Congress folks realize that they are more qualified ofr her position than she would be. Did you see Debbie Wasserman-Schulz last night on MSNBC? Hilarious.
Josh, I'll take the VP who doesn't know exactly what the constitution says but gives the right answer about the VP powers versus the one that thinks the office should have *more* power and that the worst thing Cheney did was shoot a guy.
Post that around some more though, I'm sure it'll convince a single voter that Palin now deserves their vote. More effective than saying anything positive she did last night, right?
"This is patently inaccurate on two levels. First, the first article creates the legislature, not the executive branch. Second, the only enumerated duty of the VP is in fact in the first article, and it is a legislative, not executive, duty. To quote one of those Founders, "Facts are indeed stubborn things."
The person who made this statement isn't the Alaskan governor who has been on the national scene for five weeks. It's the Senator, an attorney by trade, who has been in place for 35 years."
Oh please. You want to compare the fact that Biden got his article numbers wrong to the fact that Palin thinks that the Vice President isn't in the executive branch and wants to expand its power beyond Constitutional limits? And thinks she could rule over the Senate?
I understand you're holding Biden to a higher standard, but that's a minor misstep at most. And Biden did make some serious factual inaccuracies yesterday, but that's not one of them.
My take on the "Why isn't Obama further ahead?" rhetoric:
The person asking has the implied assumption that everyone in the country is a clear-thinking, well-informed potential voter.
Even though the person begging the question is not.
There is also the assumption that all information about the candidates is truthful and unbiased.
My evidence?
His middle name is Hussein, his last name sounds like "Osama", but he's not a Muslim, yet, at least one person thinks he is and isn't voting for him on that basis.
Thus, the rhetorical scare tactic is flawed on assumptions, and can be discounted outright.
Obama is doing incredibly well even in republican strongholds, and is threatening to tip states that were thought red.
He's not further ahead because the GOP is fighting back with everything they can, regardless of maintaining ethical standards and truth.
If the trolls wanted to see how far ahead Obama should be, they'd try to stop all the 527s and campaign activity... though, seems like McCain's doing the latter for 'em!
Wow, ultra-conservative, Charles Krauthammer, writes the McCain/Palin obituary and actually tips his cap to Obama (with many digs, of course)
Compares Obama to Reagan in 1980... Ummm, I already did that here months ago.
He finishes thusly,
"Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. famously said of Franklin Roosevelt that he had a "second-class intellect, but a first-class temperament." Obama has shown that he is a man of limited experience, questionable convictions, deeply troubling associations (Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers, Tony Rezko) and an alarming lack of self- definition -- do you really know who he is and what he believes? Nonetheless, he's got both a first-class intellect and a first-class temperament. That will likely be enough to make him president."
Anyway, here is the link:

I think the numbers updated, but there's no post yet.
Re: Palin, I wonder what to make out of her wanting to go back to Michigan. Is she going to get a talking to by Schmidt? Will McCain recommit resources? Will they point to RNC expenditures and say,"see how we listened to Sarah?"

re healthcare reform, you're going to love it. My annual health insurance premium is $600 for full single cover including hospital, dental and glasses. Public hospitals are free, but private requires payment or insurance. I can go to a doctor and get free care or minimal charge. My prescriptions can be as low as $5 to $31 as the highest.
Of course, I live in Australia and can't afford to live in the US any more purely for the cost of health care.
For those of you that don't feel like you know enough about Obama. If you like reading at all, pick up either of his books. Audacity of Hope and Dreams of my Father. Boh are fantastic. Dreams of my Father is especially good if you're looking to really understand who he is.
My brother is a Fundy and he was telling me that McCains GOTV system is partly from the party and MOSTLY from the churches.
Apparently the Fundys (and ilk) are organized to vote Retard er... Republican (always get those two words mixed up) by organizations set up throughout each church. Each member is called and urged to get out and vote Neocon - in the belief that godless communism must be stopped at all costs.
Apparently, they're also afraid that Rock Hudson's ghost will come back and turn their male children into sissy boys. They must be really be scared of Helen DeGeneres.

Krauthammer is one of the smartest conservative commentators around... if not the smartest. Granting Obama a first class intellect is a major endorsement. Comparing him to Reagan and FDR, two of the most effective (ideology aside) presidents of the last century, was not done casually.
Wasn't there a debate in this thread about whether Obama was truly a once in a generation leader/politician?
"You want to compare the fact that Biden got his article numbers wrong to the fact that Palin thinks that the Vice President isn't in the executive branch and wants to expand its power beyond Constitutional limits? And thinks she could rule over the Senate?"
Palin did not say that she thinks the VP is not in the executive branch.
There is not "constitutional limit" on the power of the VP, though. The Constitution doesn't expressly put the position in either the legislature or the executive, but, barring presidential incapacitation, the VP's only constitutional role is legislative. The first VP, Adams, did little more than preside over the Senate. Washington kept him out of cabinet meetings.
Biden was wrong on that question, even if you give him the benefit of the doubt for getting his article numbers wrong. Palin, and Cheney for that matter, have been correct.

All of the intellectuals in the country have basically endorsed Obama. It doesn't matter Conservative, Moderate, Non-Partisan, or Liberal. They all know that what makes them have a career is making the intellectual argument. The only one that can possibly be mad is for Obama. This is why you're seeing so many conservative columnists for Obama. If they appear intellectually dishonest it could hurt their careers. There's no argument whatsoever for McCain/Palin. If thee were someone out there would make it. I still haven't heard it. And I've been listening for it.
the update is up
Neither Krauthammer nor Will has endorsed Obama. Krauthammer just said that he thought Obama would win, and Will has said the same, though not in print.
No, an endorsement would be what Joe Lieberman has given the other candidate.
Granted, there is a chance that we could get another swerve in the polls. The media will probably try to sell this angle near the end of the race, to keep things exciting (and keep eyeballs on the TV set).
But if you're paying attention to the models, a lot of things have to go right for McCain for him to win, and much fewer things have to go right for Obama for him to win.
Sean and Nate, I don't suppose you want to clue us in on where you will be doing shooters tonight, as a local Chicago fan would like to buy you a drink.
538 party anyone?

While there are many compelling arguments for universal healthcare (and several good counter-arguments), you need to stay away from using infant mortality as a yardstick: in the US it is measured in a different manner than most other countries (i.e. other countries do not count "low birth weight" babies as a live birth.) If you were to control for this factor you would see that the US infant mortality rate is no better or worse than any other modern industrialized nation.
Even though Palin is obviously stupid and the McCain campaign doesn't have a ground game, Sean should think about being more neutral and were they want to take the site.
...and to summarize, in regards to the McCain ground campaign offices f*ck all y'all muthaf*ckas.
I love the road trip. I just love travel with a theme in general. It makes me nostalgic for my misspent youth.
Great job guys.
As a State employee in IN, I sincerely hope (as do a LOT of my co-workers) Obama can not only take IN but has enough coat-tails to get rid of our current rode-Bush-connection-and-broken-promise-of-1-term-into-office Gov. He's used more budget tricks and Palin/Dick C.-style firings (including of some loyal, moderate R's!) to bamboozle the R-at-heart Hoosiers. Of course the D's didn't help by putting up a weaker candidate than we should have (Hillary won the state & Jill rode *her* coattails into an upset, but the heavily-overmatched state D party hasn't been able to mount any sort of ad campaign). I fear the "surprise" is that the MI $ are headinginto IN & O may not take the State. How much do the D's need to take the State by to have a shot at dumping our Gov?
And for a supposed budget genius (sorry this is geeky/statisticy, but heck, what more appropos place?), any stat person would be head-scratching at Daniels' lame "merit increase" system--it presumes a perfect bell curve and one is not allowed to even recommend for a raise--or give a rating of exceeds expectations--unless there is an equal number of current employees who are *below* expectations in that same Division--yes, excluding those who didn't make it through probation or left for any reason! I can almost see the eyebrows raising of the stat folks here, but it's true. If your Division had no one "below expectations" and also had a Business Weekly "Employee Of The Year" that person could NOT, by Daniels' rules, get better than a "meets expectations" rating. This is the true story behind his claim to have "stopped wasteful spending"--a crock!
Not all R's are bad; I've campaigned for some. But Lugar and Snowe would be embarrassed to be associated with what's been coming out of some trolls' mouths here & on other sites. Shame about the level political discourse has sunk to, at least as evidenced a lot on the 'net.
Last point: NPR now has leaning/solid over 269; RCP has that at 265 (a single additional state goes over 270 there); CNN is close to the same. More and more it looks like the R's will have to throw more "babykiller" and other disgusting crap on the air as in WI as they *have* to turn at least one "leaning" red or they lose. Moral: D's need a blow-out; if it's close, R's can cheat their way into a win. And forget about OH & FL. Diebold/Bush cronies will see to that. More chance of a blue IN (despite the horrible SCOTUS ruling re: voter ID here).

PLEASE HELP ME.
I've lived half my life in Southern California but am not a US citizen so I can't vote. I'm in Europe for a couple of months at the moment so I can't campaign.
But this woman is nuts. Truly nuts. I almost regained a little respect for her last night.. Except I don't get how hockey moms banding together and saying "never again" will solve a financial crisis.
But after reading this I had had it with her. She is completely nuts.
Does anyone know of anything I can do from over here, to help make sure this woman will NEVER become VP, or even President?
I've already put a lot of cash on the McCain/Palin ticket just so I know I'll be left with a nice slump of cash if they actually do win.
This woman, by insinuating that Obama should rather lie, and deny that civilians HAVE been killed in Afghanistan, has now, beyond any doubt, what so ever, proven herself, to be completely and utterly incompetent for this job.
I got out of the army last year, and I am infuriated by this comment.
And to any "He" trolls out there. Learn how to become a good soldier before you go online a pretend to be one. Learning how to properly spell the name of your candidate, marine CORPS, and SEMPER FI is a start.
This is one of my first posts here, thanks for a great website Nate, and thanks to everyone who writes here, liberal or conservative. It's great to be able to read comments from intelligent people, both Republicans and Democrats. My apologies if this post sounded trollish, but that comment she just made, infuriated me, scared me, and motivated me more than ever to make sure this woman never gets anywhere near a foreign head of state.
Could anyone please explain what's going on in MN, particularly re the Senate race?
Eons ago, when I worked for a Democratic Congressman from Wisconsin, Minnesota was a state with a strong fellow "Democratic-Farm-Labor Party.
I know the state suffered an apparent "brain freeze" a few years ago when Minnesotans elected Governor Jesse Ventura, but I didn't think there'd been a state-wide lobotomy!
Is Al Franken really that bad a candidate that Carpetbagger Norm Coleman can beat him?
What gives?
So is McCain merely relying on paid phone-bankers and robo-dialers?
I have volunteered for McCain, and while I've actually been making calls and completing assignments, it really frustrates me that all the organizers seem to have other things to do. They've even promoted some volunteers to "organizer" status and then they too can just sit around and not do anything. Likewise, many other volunteers just come in and basically hang out and talk to each other. It's unbelievably frustrating to feel like you're on the side with all the do-nothings.
I thought it was just this one office.
This is what happens when you have an ORGANIZER as a candidate - the campign is actually ORGANIZED!
"Don't mourn, organize!"

Sean, thanks so much for your great posts on the road. I am in Indianapolis, IN and we are fired about the possibility of Indiana going for Obama. It is truly amazing. I have an Obama organizer staying at my house and have committed to house more if needed. I am canvassing Sat and Sun this weekend. When you go to Obama offices in Indy (I have been to 2) the energy is so HIGH, busy, busy, busy, volunteers in and out constantly. It is like nothing I have ever seen and I have worked on several campaigns. I so hope Sean visits the Obama office in Broad Ripple, it is ROCKIN!!!!
"there's a huge story unfolding in Indiana ..."
I like the sound of that teaser
"And I have to say, slightly off-topic, that Claire McCaskill has done Missouri Dems proud. "
Holy Cr*P sandwitch on stick with a side of buffalo chips! If its 'change' you want then incompetent incumbents like her should be the first to go - the Democratic incumbent Pelosi/Reid Congress has been the worst ever. Just look at what damage Pelosi, McCaskill and the Democrats have done to the economy in the past year alone. McCaskill - That moron has helped raise energy prices and like obama is dead wrong on drilling American resources, she likes higher gas prices. The same Dem folks that f'd up by protecting fannie Mae in recent years and made the housing bubble happen, now the Dems point fingers and gouge the taxpayers; now saddled up and delivered 3 pointless and expensive 'bailouts', 1 crappy farm pork bill.
What a sorry specatable - Obamaniacs wasting time foisting the most horrible presidential nominee in our lifetimes on America. Obama, leftwing activist, ready to give amnesty and drivers licenses to illegal aliens, photos ops to our enemies, welfare expansions mislabeled as tax cuts, and ready to crater our economy with tax hikes and leftwing activist stupidities.
Electing Obama an act of utter moronic sadism and an assault on our freedom, dignity, life, and American sovereignty. A cr*p sandwitch being sold as godiva chocolate will still make you gag.
America is hurtling towards the abyss thanks to the misguided efforts of brainwashed numbskull Obama supporters.
My take on the "Why isn't Obama further ahead?" rhetoric:
"The person asking has the implied assumption that everyone in the country is a clear-thinking, well-informed potential voter."
If people were clear-thinking and well-informed, they would come to know that Obama's accomplishments are nonexistent, and that he is an elitist and extremist who is out of step with America's values. He offers nothing but more socialism at home and more defeatism abroad.
The Obama campaign is the biggest bamboozling operation in American history.
"This woman, by insinuating that Obama should rather lie, and deny that civilians HAVE been killed in Afghanistan, has now, beyond any doubt, what so ever, proven herself, to be completely and utterly incompetent for this job."
Palin told the truth in calling out Obama's statements as wrong. Obama said a horrible and disgusting thing that was disgraceful and dishonest. Obama said that we were air-bombing villages. He should have, but never did apologize for his insult to our military.
Then again, Obama has a certain hubris and arrogance to him, like his "clingers" comment.
By your same standard, that a comment that is out of line disqualifies someone for P or VP - you are in effect agreeing with Governor Palin's standard here. Well done, good job affirming her.
"This is patently inaccurate on two levels. First, the first article creates the legislature, not the executive branch. Second, the only enumerated duty of the VP is in fact in the first article, and it is a legislative, not executive, duty. To quote one of those Founders, "Facts are indeed stubborn things."

PALIN WAS CORRECT (she never said it wasnt in the executive, she mentioned it had a legislative role too wrt Senate). BIDEN WAS WRONG.
That's the point. She knew more than Biden, 36 veteran, who got his Article numbers wrong *and* got wrong his claim that the VP is not mentioned as part of the Article on legislative branch - It is.
Biden got 23 thing wrongs - lies, misstatements, evasions, errors, gaffes - 23 THINGS!!
Biden's Lies
"All of the intellectuals in the country have basically endorsed Obama."
That is complete and utter baloney. Another sales job for the cr*p sandwitch of socialistic elitism. There is no argument to be made for the hollow and unoriginal empty suit. None at all. there is marketing and campaign BS and phony hype.
Like the in-the-tank liberal MSM, the liberal intellectual class has sold their souls, or forgot they had a soul, to cheerlead for this dangerous and awful President. In the end they are suck-ups to power, and screw the people and their freedoms and sovereignty.
These intellectuals that manufacture consent for the Soro-funded Obama regime are the enablers of the same type of cult of personality that sustained Hitler, Mao, Stalin and Peron.
If you cant see the puppet strings and the charade, then you are a victim of the bamboozling.
Possibly the big story in Indiana is that McCain's numbers are dropping precipitously because the Indianans are ticked that he ditched their native son David Letterman.
Republicans usually are runaway winners in states where they have 24-hour gun/liquor stores.
I'm an Obama supporter in St. Louis. It's 3 am and I just left a couple of local bars registering voters and will be knocking on doors in 6 more hours. The polls will never reflect the voters we've registered and the work which will be done to insure those supporters get to the polls on election day.
The city is solidly blue and our efforts here will help MO swing to Obama. I have yet to see a McCain office here, someone tell me where one is so I can witness it myself.
So look.
You're pushing it a little hard. It might help to stop unloading when someone resists recognizing the site as a legitimate organization that they must respect. It's incredibly new, and while the brand is very strong, it's going to take a little while to sink in with people. And the core of the brand is relatively unbiased polling projection.
Aggressively pushing this journalistic respectability on people just strikes me as the wrong way to go about it. Right on the heels of the RCP dustup, you might want to work on sounding a little less vindictive. Facts, fine; just don't sound quite so bitter about it. Releasing bad facts, harshly delivered, in response to a criticism... it sounds worse for you than them.
Well, we are working much harder. That's absolutely true, but it's because we have to.
I work in Indiana ... it's hell here, with our older voters, single-issue pro-lifers, and knee-jerk Republicans.
Heaven help two of my good pals - our old RFD who is now DFD in NC, and the campaign's most legendary canvasser, now a DRFD in MO.
Go MO!!
Go NC!!
Go IN!!!
We may lose, but we work harder.
And we are not going down without a fight!
(I'm into the shower right now ... off for a full day of canvassing. I wouldn't be in such a dreadful precinct if I had the choice, but I've already knocked all the good ones :))
GEORGIA is similar. Obama has at least 40 offices; McCain has ZERO -- only the Southeast regional office in Tallahassee, FL.
Don't forget us in Tippecanoe co. (Lafayette), IN. I'm all for Crawfordsville (go, Montgmery Co Obama!!!), but if we may brag ... we were the smallest co. in IN to be won during the primary, and the one w/ the smallest proportion of African-Americans.
We did have PU (Purdue U.) on our side, but the early voting results there were a tiny fraction of the co-wide vote.
That means we turned out the blue-coller "Hillary Demographic" voters in the city of Lafayette, which is about 40% of Tippecanoe co. We are the sixth-largest (or thereabouts) co. in the state.
Oh BTW, one of our ex-FOs is now working in Crawfordsville, and I wish you guys out there (and all Obama folks) the best!!
This isn't just a "ground game" here in IN, this is a movement.
And BTW, I have nothing to do with that "other" Raj. I'm known around here as The Mad Canvasser (with some justification).
Go NC!!
Go MO!!
Go IN!!
:D
No more excuses, now I'm off. Backpack was packed last night w/ Phillies, policy lit., reggae and even ABS w/ the mailing address hand-written on the back. (ABS are critical, we have a lot of older pre-civil-rights-era Dems. "Ya gotta work them ABS!!" hehe)
This was a fascinating article (you remember, the piece about the ground campaigns, before all the racist junk started flying).
I'm not sure what it means, though. In Ohio in 2004, I believe the GOP did have a good ground game. But so did Kerry supporters (ACT more than the Kerry campaign itself, but that's another story).
I can't prove it, nor am I sure myself, but seemed to me that the anti-gay-marriage state constitutional amendment on the ballot brought out more Bush voters than any conventional GOTV activities (canvassing, driving to polls, etc.). I understand it was extremely effective among the many Amish Ohioans (Ohio actually has more Amish than PA), who often don't vote.
36 ... but close. Was a fan of McCain when he fought the airway frequency giveaway in the 90s. Disagreed with his stance on social issues though. Mostly it's an anti-Obama vote. I am anti-union, pro-free trade and think national healthcare would be a complete disaster (more inline with Regina Herzlinger's consumer driven model at Harvard).
Anti-union, pro-free trade, anti-national healthcare...you may have historically voted Democrat but you are a Republican, with those political views.
Flip-flopper.
So they've never heard of fivethirtyeight and you can't be trusted to enter a field office but mccain-palin are buying ad space at the top of your page?!?!
Hope you guys come to Columbia, Missouri. This place is rockin' for Obama. Home of the Missouri Tigers (GO MIZZOU!), there is a big push and student involvement for Obama here. However, as news of Obama's success here, I am seeing more McCain signs--in yards, on the sides of private businesses, etc. I think people are starting to see this state turn BLUE!
Indiana resident here.
I'm a student at Purdue and I can see the difference in the ground game everywhere.
McCain has an oft visited table at the entrance to the liberal arts building at an engineering school. Obama has registration tables trying to get every out of state student registered in Indiana and doing all they can to boost voter rolls everywhere they can as the rural vote is very important here, and it's logistically nearly impossible to get a ground game across the countryside.
The Red dam is showing serious signs of cracking to the blue flood.
What the fuck? Indiana and Illinois are right next to Wisconsin! And since Wisconsin and Pennsylvania are now McCain's only real pickup targets, I think Wisconsin deserves some love. I hear that southeastern Wisconsin is a real bellweather for the state too. ...Also, everyone in our office reads 538.
Y'know, the Republican ground game isn't just GOTV, but also KITV... ("keep in the [opposing] vote")
Your description of the McCain operation reminds me a little of when I was covering the NY primary for a local weekly in Chelsea, and the contrast in energy (if not numbers) was palpable. Clinton's volunteers were calm, dedicated, and by the book. At the Obama guerrilla phone bank in Hillary's home state, ir was a different story.)
Note from a carpetbagger in Loudoun... I was canvasing in that area last weekend, the people (in the rich areas, told it would be a hard sell) were going 2/3 Obama (roughly split between "Obama all the way", Hillary supporter who will likely vote Obama", and "don't talk to me").
On the other hand I was registering people to vote today (not too many left who will admit to being eligible and not registered). I was hearing more tales about harder sales in more "traditional blue" areas. Might be because we only hit the undecided voters...
Obama's about to lose my vote if I don't get the "Republicans for Obama" stickers I ordered three weeks ago. ;)
real joe, "PUMAs" are a myth. The woman who started the group called PUMA was a McCain supporter. When asked why she'd donated to McCain and not Hillary Clinton, she made some bizarre excuse about how she was only helping him in the primaries but didn't really support him.
