"There's Dr. Dan! There's Jose the air-conditioning man!" said Sen. John McCain. Other notables attending McCain's "Joe the Plumber" rally at Everglades Lumber in Miami included Gus the Homebuilder, Jeb the Former Governor, Mel and Lindsey the Senators, Pete the Exterminator, Lincoln and Mario the Congressional brothers, Joe the Connecticut-for-Lieberman Party leader, Joe the Engineer, Tom the Color-Coder, and Charlie the Early Vote Extender.
In a forceful and passionate speech that whipped the crowd into an enthusiastic roar, John McCain pronounced his full intention to win Tuesday's election. "I'm an American and I choose to fight!" he proclaimed. Repeating "fight" and "stand up" in a battering conclusion to his speech, McCain gave the crowd the feeling that he would never go down without full effort.
Notably, however, McCain still failed to mention the "middle class," only saying "I know you are worried" about the economic climate. In an otherwise strong speech, it seemed the only weakness. McCain attacked Obama as "more interested in controlling (wealth) than creating it." Playing to the anti-Castro Cuban-American crowd, McCain painted Obama as a socialist and a "redistributionist" who wants to take "your money" and give it to someone else.
As for readiness to meet crises at home and abroad, McCain assured the crowd, "I've been tested, my friends, I've been tested." The biggest crowd reaction came when McCain said he would bring the troops home, "but NOT in defeat!"
As I sat in the media area wrapping up work after the rally, several different crowd members walked by and demanded that we "be objective" and "report the truth." It was apparent that just being in the media area meant an implicit assumption of unfairness. One woman was in her 80s and I had to lean in to hear her repeat her demand twice. Another man, with whom I engaged in brief conversation, insisted that I wasn't being objective and asked me to basically tell all the rest of the reporters to deliver the message. We noticed this same attitude in other rallies, notably Palin's Wilmington, Ohio rally several weeks ago. In Republican minds, the media and ACORN are stealing this election, and that's that.
When we left the rally, we saw a disturbing scene that involved two Obama supporters in distress from an angry crowd. We reported on it here.
Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and President Clinton also spent the day stumping around Florida, and we stopped at some McCain and Obama offices before driving three hours back up to Kissimmee for the midnight rally. Brett's access to the buffer zone was denied (ironically on the day we passed the New York Times' circulation figures), so the photos aren't as exciting (we did get a shot of a girl on the beach with "Miami Beach" on her butt, so there's at least that).
Bill Clinton spoke as powerfully on Barack Obama's behalf as I've seen this year, despite a curious line early on: "Even a few old white guys like me, you haven't cut my demographic out yet." Um, what?
Still, Bill Clinton is at his very best when he gives a declarative line and then launches into, "and let me tell you why." At his convention speech that many liked but I thought was mediocre, Clinton only said that Obama was ready to be president but offered no "and let me tell you why" behind it, which is his trademark. In Kissimmee, Clinton met that standard and more, arguing point by point why Barack Obama would be the better president.
According to Clinton, Obama had better (1) governing philosophy; (2) policies; (3) ability to make decisions; and (4) ability to execute those decisions. He laughed at the "redistributionist" argument John McCain had continued promulgating earlier in the day. Referring to the Republican-controlled government of the recent past, "they just presided over the biggest distribution of wealth upward since the 1920s, and we all know what happened (then)."
Referring to his own record, "We made more millionaires and billionaires" than the Republicans did, it's just that it doesn't get noticed because the middle class also saw its incomes rise.
Clinton highlighted Obama's superior economic, education, health care and energy plans. "Just look at his plans!" Clinton challenged.
In all, it was a passionate, full-throated argument for Barack Obama that many Democrats wished had come earlier in the campaign, but one that in the closing days will certainly resonate with any of the last few Clinton Democrats uncertain about getting on board with the Democratic nominee.
Some, of course, will never come aboard, and one of these incidents presented a personal highlight for me. At the McCain event in Miami, a woman approached Brett and me inside the media area to ask what media outlet we were with, and subsequently to pitch her argument. She said she was a "blogger with No Quarter" and I thought, oh, this is going to be good.
Sure enough, she proceeded to argue that there were many former Clinton supporters now supporting John McCain because they were outraged at Obama's lack of experience, a claim that is absurd on its face. (Nobody ever gets outraged about someone's "lack of experience." It doesn't drive anger. Bad policies might drive anger. Not inexperience.)
Brett had to leave because he couldn't take the barrage of ridiculousness, and half an hour later bailed me out with the fake "phone call" move. For my part, I listened to her patiently. When she finally paused, I looked her dead in the eye and calmly told her that her site was "rancid." Everything about what Larry Johnson was doing was scummy, I told her squarely, his site was a grotesque disgrace. I'm not sure that was the reaction she expected, but I even got her complimenting me on my honesty and forthrightness and reasonable tone with which I explained how horrifyingly unacceptable the racist bile on Larry Johnson's site truly was.
But then it just went on waaay too long. Eventually she thought she had me trapped. "I hear you talk about racism, but nothing about sexism." I replied that it is unacceptable to make racism and sexism into a race to see which one is worse, when they're both awful things. She asked me to think long and hard about whether I was a sexist, because I was in the media, and so was the sexist Chris Matthews and the sexist Andrea Mitchell, who had commented on Sarah Palin's clothes in a sexist way. Yeah, you heard me. For half an hour. Til Brett did the phone call thing.
Later, catching up with the great Al Giordano over a pint of Guinness in Tampa, he recounted having a similar conversation with this same woman (by description) who trapped him next to a broken elevator in Denver during the convention. "Oh man, that woman was crazy!" he recalled.
We visited McCain offices and Obama offices in Miami and the region, and we noticed that McCain's effort is clearly ramping up as the election gets closer. At around 3pm in one of McCain's Victory offices in Miami-Dade, the phone bank was half full with a promise of a bigger effort that night, which we believed. There was a clear sense of activity, even if the Obama side is still much bigger.
Obama's central offices during this early voting GOTV period have mostly emptied into staging areas. "Every Day is Election Day" is the mantra. The big news was Charlie Crist's expansion of the voting hours. Theories we heard ranged from the cynical ("he knows Obama's going to win and wants to position himself as a hero," "he's angry with McCain for passing him over,") to the optimistic ("he sincerely believes in voting rights") to the practical ("there would have been a massive backlash if he hadn't made this move, and if courts reverse it he can legitimately say he tried.")
Whatever the cause, Crist got a very tepid response in front of the Republican audience at his speech on behalf of McCain (he'd made the announcement the day before), and is uniformly praised among Florida Democrats in the past few days.
Obama's staging locations are spread out, having blossomed all over the state in the closing days. We didn't talk to any Obama volunteers in our breakneck day that involved an impromptu report on the fracas in Miami, so we hope you'll excuse their absence in this report.
It's on to Tampa (where we spoke with Voter Protection Obama volunteers and saw a busy McCain office on Thursday night), then Daytona Beach today and the Panhandle tomorrow. 11,781 miles.

John The Loser.
Without John McCain, this would be a landslide for Obama. But war heroes are probably more respected in America than any other figures.
I think Obama will win either 51-48 or 52-47. I'm not sure which at the moment.
I just read about this on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_ticket#North_Carolina):
In North Carolina, voting "straight party" (using the term from an NC ballot) does not include a vote for the President and Vice President of the United States. North Carolina voters therefore must make separate selections for the President/Vice President and the straight-party option (see sample ballot from Precinct 3, Durham, North Carolina).
This idiosyncrasy on the North Carolin ballot is described by some as "a ballot flaw" that may confuse voters[3], potentially resulting in voters failing to cast a vote for President and Vice President when doing so was their intent. It was introduced in the 1960s to shore up Democrats at the state level as Republicans were gaining strength at the national level.[4]
In the 2000 presidential election, there was a 3.15% "undervote" ((total voter turnout - total votes for President and Vice President) / total voter turnout); in the 2004 presidential election, there was a 2.57% undervote. This means that in raw numbers, more than 92,000 North Carolina voters in the 2000 election turned out to vote but did not vote for president; similarly, in 2004, more than 75,000 North Carolina voters turned out to vote but not vote for president.[5]
As North Carolina is widely regarded as a swing state in the 2008 Presidential election, with Barack Obama having a narrow lead over John McCain in the polls (as of October 26, 2008), a similar undervote in North Carolina could impact the outcome of the 2008 presidential election.
-------
My first thought was this may hurt Obama because first time voters might not be aware of the rules. Anyone else heard about this? Thoughts? One thing one can say is that it will only make this swing state even more unpredictable.
Do any of these models consider the impact of third party candidates?
What's up with Republicans and their frenzy every time someone yells "(name) the (occupation)!!!!!!!"
It just makes me feel like vomiting.
In their closing argument, the GOP is leaving voters with a couple of simple questions:
1. "Are you right of center or left of center? If right of center, vote John McCain."
2. "Are you comfortable with a Democratically controlled House, Senate, White House, and the Supreme Court, or do you want to retain some checks and balances?"
For some, this provides a magnificent cover for voting against Obama...even if the reason really was his race.
current guess 353. 52-47-1,
Deciding what American snack am going to eat at midnight. Probably a pretzel.
@chadmbol
The voters receive a slip of paper explaining the issue. GOTV workers also tell them about it. Only the brain dead will undervote. (There will be some.)

Amazing news!

No Hallowe'en references, my pumpkin-brained friends?
chadmbol, this has been discussed on lots of other threads. I voted yesterday in NC. Specific instructions are printed on the ballot itself, there was a sign in the voting booth, and the poll worker gave me specific verbal instructions when she handed me the ballot. It may vary from location to location, but from what I saw, they're trying to make it clear.
I've also gotten mailers from Obama with a heads-up about the ballot design, too. They're aware of this and working to make it clear that you have to vote separately for President.
Also in the AZ link- IND's in AZ are more unfavorable opinion on McC than favorable 51-48.
Check out the link- its amazing- if it weren't McC than AZ would be blue- and it may just be blue with him.
despite a curious line early on: "Even a few old white guys like me, you haven't cut my demographic out yet." Um, what?
The actual quote was:
"Even got a few old gray-haired white guys like me - you haven't cut my demographic out yet"
I think it was more a self-deprecating joke about old farts.
chadmbol - I am an NC resident, and I don't see where this will have a large partisan effect. Yes it may disproportionately affect new voters slightly, which is presumably democratic-leaning anti-bias.
But president is right at the top of the ballot and the language is really pretty clear. And when I early-voted, the person handing me the ballot also stated that the president had to be voted for separately.
I think a higher proportion of registered republicans here will vote straight ticket too, so that may offset any of the above effect. I say that because NC has a large # of conservative democrats, and in addition, we have some serious corruption cases in the democratic party at the state level. I voted against Beverly Perdue for governor just because I think the State needs a break from dem rule (and her opponent is relatively moderate). I think many Obama supporters may do the same.
@ Carrie and STepper
Thanks for the info! I suppose I should have trusted that well run campaigns wouldn't let this go unaccounted for.
I live in Orlando and think I may miss my calls from Barack daily, my text messages and emails. I am going to miss the voicemails from Michelle Obama, Jill Biden, Bill Nelson, George Lopez (yep)...I hope to get over it by awaiting the inauguration of my guy.
GO VOTE!! My early voting location was featured in our local news of 3hour wait, not too long compared to other sites, but I may MAY wait until election day. I don't know. I don't mind the 3 hour wait, I waited 7 hours standing with no water or food to see Obama on the 20th here with Hillary.
I just hope he wins.

Ah, but it wasn't. It was very bad. Sorry to hear it, Sean! And sorry to say you'll never get that half hour back.
Thanks for being objective, though.
My prediction: Obama wins with a 16% popular vote margin, and wins the EV count 412-126. The early voting plus the polls discourages late-voting Republicans, giving Obama GA, WV, IN, MT, ND, AZ, and one EV from Nebraska.
trying to keep all your minds off tightening, PA, and Diebold, I'm interested in whether anybody has done any research into whether voters are switching allegiance. From what I have seen, you know how many registered GOP and Dem voters there are now and how many there were in 2004, but does anybody know whether any of 2004's GOP/Dems have switched sides since? And what stats are there on voters registered for one party voting for the other?
Here in the UK you just register to vote, and nobody knows your allegiance We party supporters have to go out and knock on doors to find that out. One of the things we do is compare what people say they are voting this time to what they said they would vote last time. Evidence of switching shows who has the momentum and helps predict who will win. How do you do that in the context of having voters affiliated to parties?
WV hovei - what all those Hispanic Jewish voters are saying in Florida
McCain is truly the "say anything" candidate. Yikes. Scary.
There's no doubt that thanks to early voting Georgia will be in Obama's column as the polls open on November 4th. The GOP desperately needs their supporters to turn up on election day or they'll lose the state.
So, did McCain call out Thomas the Tank Engine too?

I agree. If Governor Janet Napolitano runs against him for Senator, he would have a real fight on his hands. It would be wonderful if she became the next national figure from Arizona.
Aww, Sean, I hoped you'd make a stop in GA before haring down to Florida. Excellent post, though - I commend your patience in the face of NoQuarter, a site that's bad enough when there's a 'back' button to save you from the madness... She really said that it was okay to write for a raving racist site because sexism exists? Erm, did no one ever tell her that two wrongs don't make a right? I am a feminist blogger; there's plenty of sites that write against sexism, many of them organising new and productive anti-sexist work in the real world. NoQuarter is not one of them. It's not about fighting sexism, it's about promoting racism.
ogre,
I did enjoy the Daily Shows bit with Bob the Builder the other night. But that whole [name] the [occupation] bit has run its time now, and if its all McCain has going down the stretch then he really could go down very big.
Last 3 day battle of the surrogates, Joe the Plumber (well sam the tax evader) against Bill Clinton and Al Gore. Kind of makes you realise ho badly the GOP is losing.
"MSNBC reported around 12:15pm that people at one place in Atlanta are waiting 8-10 hours to vote early."
I think there will be a number of states considering mail-in voting after this election.
No one should have to wait more than an hour to vote in any precinct, early or election day, in this country.
I am very concerned that we are a society that put a man on the moon nearly 40 years ago but act like we cannot solve this problem.
It is easy.

Voted early in Maine today. Little tiny town and in it a little tiny townhouse where there were a dozen people waiting. The biddy at the desk says she's never seen that many people in that room at the same time to vote. We're doing our part, but up here on the Mid-Coast there's plenty of McFail signs. Thank goodness for Portland! Going to make some calls this afternoon and have got a full day of driving on Monday.
If you haven't done so yet, believe me your local office will welcome your call. I know many folks don't like to make calls, but anyone you drive to the polls will be grateful for your service, as with Barack Obama. Believe me, when this man wins you'll be that much more pleased if you know that you were in a real way part of getting the job done.

I doubt McCain will run again in 2010. He is getting old and he will probably never get over losing to Obama. he will spend the rest of his term trying to obstruct him as much as possible.
I suugest everyone check out free republic, they are expecting a giant landslide by McCain based on some loon who claims he has the gop internals.
It`s pretty funny, they claim 37% of democrats in Pa are voting for McCain and are lying to regular pollsters. Also Mc is only one back in CA.
These people may flip out come tuesday.
Sean, your series "On the Road" has been such a breath of fresh air. I love the pictures, the stories and all that comes through in your pieces. Keep up the great work.
Could the undervoteing be people showing up to vote in their local elections but not wanting any of the options for pres and so just not voting? My mother has done this before (2000) and my father is considering it this year.
2 things
1- AZ is real- look at the trend in the mtn west area.
Also- look at the last 7 polls before this one today- McCain up (from older to now) 8,4,2,5,6,4
I get that a lot of people think don't worry about AZ because they think if he wins there it'll already be landslide area- but if you ignore that it's McCain's home state you are left with this- AZ is likely within 5 points- it has 10 EV's- the race could be close overall- and Obama can win. McCain's going to AZ Monday, and Obama is putting up ads. Obama should go to Phoenix and stir things up. Plus, because polls are close- ads and a visit will make the media focus on the polls and it will put a damper on Republican attitudes and GOTV- and excite voters in AZ who may vote Obama.
2- RCP has put up 4 of 6 PPP polls and hasn't put up the CO pull that has Obama up big.... huh that's weird RCP avoiding mking it look incredibly bad for McCain
Teaser from Daily Kos (stay tuned)...
"We've already seen our own poll from Arizona showing a neck-and-neck race. Over the next couple of hours we'll release polls from Georgia and North Dakota showing similar results. This is the real deal, and we are well within reach of winning all three of these states."
I just wanted to point out that Joe Lieberman is not the head of the Conneticut for Lieberman party. He never joined the party, and he's still a registered Democrat. I'd say no one ever joined the party, but one guy did...funny stuff. Look it up.
Wow, so Arizona really is turning into a toss up?
This "on the road" series should get some kind of media award. You fellas are doing yeoman's work.

@Mrs B
How the 'rolls' are kept is, like voting eligibility, a state by state thing. So, for example, when you register in VA, you just register, there is no party affiliation.
I live in MA, and I can register as Rep, Dem or Independent. I am not obliged to vote that way, of course, and in hotly contested primaries, many people will switch from I to R or D in order to be able to vote (you can only vote in your party's primary). Some I's that switch for that purpose just never switch back.
As always, registered party is a strong hint at how someone is likely to vote, but it's up to each person once they get in the booth.
Analysis of Ras numbers from this AM:
http://donklephant.com/2008/10/31/rasmussen-obama-up-by-4-7/
"My prediction for the popular vote? I think it’s going to turn out something like 51.8% to 46.2%. Because all of that early voting is really favoring Obama at this point. And while that spread certainly won’t dictate any sort of “mandate”, it could push Obama up to 350 electoral votes."

Also, early voting on Gallup is up to 24%. I interpret this number as the percentage of registered voters who voted early. Is that correct? So, if we expect a turnout around 70%, 24% means more than a third of votes have already been cast in this election.

The surge in Gallup that has also been reflected in the past two days in Zogby, R2K, Rasmussen, Hotline and Battleground, is a direct result of Obama holding his nerve in the knowledge that his informercial and appearance with Bill would destroy McCain making him look like the bitter, angry and petty man that he is.
It's time we recognised what a master tactician Obama is and what a magnificent campaign he has run. At the various moments of panic (after the Ohio/Texas primary, the celebrity attack, the Rev Wright episode, the peak of the Palin RNC GOP boost), he never lost his nerve, he stayed cool never undercutting his message of reason, composure and decency. Now comes his reward.

give mc 100% of the undecides in Gallup, and guess what: he still loses. ditto for pretty much every other poll.
Today's poll numbers, along with the behavior last week confirms a belief I've had about 'big' events. The pundits, and many others act as if they should show up in poll results immediately (i.e., after Powell endorsement, you say headlines like "Powell endorsement doesn't change results", etc. and same after the infomercial). I think this is ridiculous. Events probably don't change that many minds anyways, but the ones they DO change probably take a couple days to show up I believe. It's not like an undecided voter heard about the Powell endorsement and thought, "That seals it. I'm now 100% for Obama!" More like, "hmm, another data point." After a few days, these folks might start to swing, but not immediately. Given that, I think Obama timed his commercial perfectly. It will be on people's minds over the next few days, and if it DID sway them, could be part of today's good results.
Tucker Carlson, campaign spokesman, is saying AZ is not competitive. Ya, right Tucker.

If I were to take office as the 44th President by any numbers, I would be sorely tempted to say, "By 2000 and 2004 standards, the voters have given us a mandate! My administration doesn't work that way."
It'll be interesting to see what the President elect actually does say.
Haven't you always wondered why you have never seen Joe Biden and Real Joe together.
I can't countenance calling Al Giordano "great."
This is a person who treats all criticism of Obama as if it comes from Concern Trolls or Republican shills.
Anyone who is that into stifling dissent (and this is coming from someone who has always dislike Sirota and thinks Matt Stoller would do everyone a service if he gave up blogging) can't be that great.

"I doubt McCain will run again in 2010. He is getting old and he will probably never get over losing to Obama. he will spend the rest of his term trying to obstruct him as much as possible."
You're probably right that he won't run; at least, I hope you are. But his refusal to rule out a second Presidential term and his (and his campaign's) general difficulties with ascertaining reality, only a portion of which has been tactical, make me think that the increasingly senile old coot might try again, like Strom Thurmond.
On Sunday, Obama has rallies in all 3 Big C's of Ohio: Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati. Should be great!
Holy shit! Look at this question from the Research 2000 poll!
If the 2010 election for U.S. Senate were held today for whom would you vote for if the choices were between Janet Napolitano the Democrat and John McCain the Republican?
McCain (R) 45
Napolitano (D) 53
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH
Gallup should make you want to get out and vote even more....don't get comfortable let's run up the score...
Exactly. When your enemy is defeated is no time to ease up and allow them to regroup. Crush the GOP now!
WV: uninged, what's likely to happen to PeteKent when he sees these poll results.
Some time ago, the satisfaction of having Obama's opponents have to deal with him as president surged ahead of the satisfaction of his supporters getting to have him as president.
It's petty I know, but it happened.
If Obama is wasting money in AZ, what about McCain's robocalls that started the day before?
I saw an Obama closing ad in PA last night touting the Warren Buffet and Colin Powell endorsements - perfect!
Brett & Sean, can I just say that your On The Road stories are the highlight of my day. The pictures are amazing and you make me feel like I was right there with you. Especially the 30-minutes with the "blogger with no quarter".

"People! Margin of Error does not mean that polls can only be off by that percentage. Please, look up margin of error on wiki or take a class on statistics."
True, but the chance of the polls being off by more than MOE, and in McCain's direction, is less than 2.5%. Remember, MOE goes both ways, so polls could just as easily be underestimating Obama's support. The most likely occurrence is that the polls are off by much less than the MOE.
I have even more respect for you knowing that you drink Guinness. Sláinte!
It's not over yet. Just since yesterday, Obama's lead in the RCP national average has tightened by -1/2 point since yesterday. If that daily trend continues, his lead will be down to 8.4 points by Election Day!
So if Arizona's governor decides to run for the senate in 2010...
Say goodbye to McCain! Haha!
As someone said before, your "On the Road" series need to be made into a book.

I have always assumed the early voting numbers gallup quotes are those who said they have already voted or plan to when they are interviewed by a gallup pollsters.
Yes, I realize that. But that gives us an idea about the general early vote stats, just like polls do. If 24% have voted, that's more than 1/3 of a total turnout of 70%. Am I missing anything?
Man, I wish we had some more polls of ND, MT and AZ. I figure if NC, FL and IN are tightening, those must be too. Any numbers out there?

Yes. I don't want them voting for the same party that has taken my beloved country so far off course. Why would any patriot want more of the same last eight years?
As to tolerance and peace, how is hoping someone will not turn out intolerant or violent? No one said they're not entitled to vote or should be threatened in any way. Sheesh, talk about your strawman arguments!

It's time we recognised what a master tactician Obama is and what a magnificent campaign he has run. Now comes his reward.
It's coming home my friends."
That may be what impresses me the most about Obama. It seems he never had any doubt that he could win this thing (and yes I KNOW its not over...I think we've all gotten the "dont get complacement" memo at this point)
From the first day he announced his candidacy, all through the primaries and this general election cycle, he has been possessed with a sense of purpose, mission and destiny that is truly an example for anyone aspiring to any goal, particularly one for which the odds seem stacked against success.
Sorry, I of course meant Tucker Bounds. Too many cold meds on the brain today.
Tucker Carlson is not even a well informed talking head!
You gotta love Bounds, he is puching the talking points hard, but there is an air of giving up at the end of alot of his answers.
recksadd - the story of the campaign media effort.
Tucker Carlson isn't a McCain spokesperson, he's just a commentator. Tucker Bounds is the McCain spokesperson I think you may have meant.
Tucker Carlson knows this is over (or did during is 2PM WaPo chat:

inkstain, not really. He was selling stuff out of his van, yes. But it was high quality. And he had thousands of dollars worth of inventory. No way someone just fronted him that. He made a significant investment, that I'm sure will pay off. He must have sold $200.00 of stuff in the five minutes I stopped by. Good for him, I say.

Prediction: RCP takes at least 2 hours to add the AZ poll, and when they do, they'll knock off the Arizona State (M+2) poll, but not the N. Ariz Univ (M+8) poll, even though they should either both be knocked off or neither, and making McCain's average a +5, exactly enough to keep him out of toss-up status.
I know how they work.
Based on the Gallup Poll results today, I'd say that 30 minute informercial was yet another smart maneuver.
If the 2010 election for U.S. Senate were held today for whom would you vote for if the choices were between Janet Napolitano the Democrat and John McCain the Republican?
McCain (R) 45
Napolitano (D) 53
That's awesome, but I bet McCain doesn't run for re-election in 2010 if (when!) he loses on Tuesday. His importance is going to be greatly reduced in a Senate with 58 or 59 Democrats - there'll be fewer instances when a "maverick" Republican can make a difference. Less ass-kissing = bad for the ego.
If Napolitano gets serious about running (When is her current term up? Is she term-limited at all?) and later polling shows a similar result, I bet he retires rather than risk going down in defeat.
I have heard reports that Sister Sarah home schooled her kids at least for awhile. Is this true?
zations - all the cool pro-Obama countries.
Vinny: I'm not surprised at all with a poll suggesting that Gov. Napolitano would beat McCain in a Senate race. Janet Napolitano is a very popular Governor here in AZ.
WV: RERSTE - McCain, rerste in peace!
Just saw the new Gallup LV numbers and the spread is great. Coupled with the early voting tally's in NM and CO (reported here in an earlier threat) plus Rick Davis announcing that 'Iowa is dead even' leads me to finally feel comfortable (not cocky - anything can happen).
I'm a Republican -- except for this election where I registered 'no party' in CA -- and I want the GOP to receive a complete thrashing. We were once the party of reason, the party of fiscal conservatives, the party individual liberty -- how the train got so far off the tracks is beyond me.
There is no place in politics for personal cultural beliefs, there should be a separation of church and state (which is why I voted 'NO' on Prop 8 here in CA), leaders in government should not pit one electorate group against others in an attempt to split the nation, wars should be fought only as a last resort and government should not borrow trillions to run up the national deficit. All of the above are what the Bush administration coupled with GOP rule in Congress for 6 out of the 8 Bush years have done. THESE ARE NOT REPUBLICAN PRINCIPLES. Tom Delay was not a representative of Republican ideology and McCarthyism should never, ever be allowed to comeback in any shape, manner or form.
The GOP needs leaders who will bring the party back to the center and avoid divisive cutural issues and fight to provide individuals the opportunity to take advantage of opportunities which has been so unbelievably lack the last 8 years.
If Napolitano gets serious about running (When is her current term up? Is she term-limited at all?) and later polling shows a similar result, I bet he retires rather than risk going down in defeat.
He's pretty stubborn.
I have adjusted my margin for Obama to a range of +6.76 to +7.34, down from +7.01 to +7.65 two weeks ago.
I am expecting 124.3 million voters nation wide.
Incorporating a 3.43% median vote for third party candidates in total, my predictions applied to hard numbers are as follows:
Obama 51.47 (@ 63,975,000 PVs)
McCain 44.40 (@ 55,190,000 PVs)
Third 4.13 (@ 5,135,000 PVs)
I cannot find a model that suggests that the margin in popular vote or electoral votes can lean to McCain at this point.
Arizona may be like Minnesota for Mondale in 1984 (10,000 votes)
I'm a Republican -- except for this election where I registered 'no party' in CA -- and I want the GOP to receive a complete thrashing. We were once the party of reason, the party of fiscal conservatives, the party individual liberty -- how the train got so far off the tracks is beyond me.
Two words:
American. Taliban.
That is all.
Palin's children have been on again off again staying with her parents.
But, it's fairly plain this isn't a family with a great deal of respect for education. Oldest son (the one in Iraq) is a high school dropout. Looks as if oldest daughter is headed that way, her groom-to-be has already dropped out of HS. Although her parents have strong education backgrounds, well, actions speak volumes here.
The McCain campaign is so full of it. Raising the highest tax bracket rate by 3 points does not a socialist make. The progressive tax code is not an evil Marxist tool that must be flattened. It's amazing that by using scare words like "socialist" and "Marxist", the Republicans are once again getting millions of middle class people to vote against their own self-interest.
Check your email. I just got a message from O saying they've reserved spots at the Election Night Party for some people who donate now. If I wasn't going to be working the polls to make sure votes get counted, I'd probably donate yet again . . .
Nate,
What are these rumors that according to a half-ass exit poll done by L.A. Times/Bloomberg, McCain is ahead by 4% in Florida!!!
How reliable is this poll?
kelly: Janet Napolitano is in her second term (reelected on a LANDSLIDE), so she will very likely consider a Senate run in 2010 (unless she accepts a high office position in a more than likely Obama administration). On the other hand, I also can't see McCain trying an other Senate term in 2010.

Even if we can't get McConnell, I hope we can at least crush Suxby.
@vermontdem - He's grasping at straws. There was a poll showing a 46-46 tie but it is weeks old and a tiny sample.
Daniel---thank you. Although I am a Democrat--I agree completely. I hope that the election of Barack can end the partisenship in this nation. I hope that Republicans and Democrats can work together to heal this nation. There is no need for either party to be at each others throat.
are we 100% sure Trig is Sarah's and not Bristol's? Palin is white trash. Let's just keep it real. Political correctness is unnecessary right now. We need to speak the truth. Have we ever had a candidate as trashy as she is?
McCain has surrounded himself with folks like:
Tucker Bounds
Rick Davis
Steve Schmidt
Sarah Palin
...and walked away from a handful of people that could have been really helpful to him and were obviously good at what they do. He would be a terrible President. walks away from good people he's surrounded by and replaces them with crap.
@CameronsCrusaders and @mysticlaker,
another $100 from me too. now I just gotta convince my wife to vote early (here in CA) so we're ready if we win tix to the Grant Park rally!
Those Gallup numbers warm my cockles. Not because it shows an Obama surge, but because those are the kind of gains I'd expect to sse at this stage, especially after the Obama-Clinton rally in Florida. I don't buy into the conventional widom that polls are expected to tighten. I'm waiting for the national polls to catch up with PEW, and I'll be disappointed if they don't. Obama SHOULD be over 50%, and McCain SHOULD be about or below 40%. To me that seems reasonable. The conservative nutbase is locked up and will turn out in droves, there's no surprise element there. But you'd expect the Democratic base to be rock solid and independents to break decisevely for Obama, or falingf that, vote for 3rd party candidate. I can't imagine what appeal the increasingly unhinged Republican ticket holds for any undecideds.
BTW, is Gallup are the first pollster to confirm these results are the first to be completed post-Obama informercial?
I'm getting tired of this election, where's the picture of the Miami Beech Butt? ...this wasn't a shot of Palin from behind

McCain hasn't been ahead or tied in an NM poll since early September...which is around the last time he was ahead or tied in the national polls as well.
I love your reports, Sean and Brett, I base a lot of my election predictions on your reports. I know that time is running out, but I hope you can tell us something about Georgia and Arizona on your way back to California.
Was the tie NM a Arizona State Poll?
Because I went to ASU and trust me we aint so smart when it comes to numbers.
From what I have seen, you know how many registered GOP and Dem voters there are now and how many there were in 2004
There's also a significant number of people who have become old enough to vote in the last 4 years.

Without John McCain, this would be a landslide for Obama. But war heroes are probably more respected in America than any other figures.
Since when does crashing four military jets (and one private one), bombing people (he was a bomber pilot, not a fighter pilot as people keep claiming -- look it up), getting captured, and then squealing under torture (there were North Vietnamese propaganda films starring his recanting) make you a hero? Several of his former fellow prisoners of war are on record as saying that in their opinion McCain is not a hero and does not have the temperament for a president. Go read the Rolling Stone cover article about McCain if you have mistaken him for a war hero.
And then there are the rumors about his actions during the USS Forestal fire...
I think Obama will be as good a president as he was a community organizer- maybe even better!! What do you think, bamobambam?
aria, shut the fuck up you lousy concern troll and READ THIS...
WSVN-Suffolk University poll has Barack Obama leading John McCain by a 60% to 40% margin among early voters. What's more, the number of early voters could approach 30% of all of Florida's 11.2 million registered voters by the actual November 4 election day. That massive turnout prompted Florida's GOP Governor, Charlie Crist, to flash his bipartisan bona fides this week and lengthen the weekday early voting by four hours (while letting each county decide whether to lengthen the normal hours this weekend).

A close Republican friend of mine who has worked on campaigns in the Midwest since 1980 became a Democrat in 2006. I saw him for the first time a few weeks ago and asked why.
Intolerance, religiously and economically. The religious intolerance is apparent, but I asked him to explain the economic intolerance.
"You cannot build wealthy people without recognizing that the best wealthy people are borne of the middle and lower class. The GOP fights for maintaining wealth in one class - the rich. The Democrats are economically conservative party because they have democratized access to opportunity. They have also proven to be the only party able enough to balance a budget. They are the adult party today".
I had never heard it put so well before, but that is why a lot of moderate/centrist Republicans feel more comfortable with Democrats today than the remaining members of the Southern/Plains People's Party.

aunt karen,
It's just that it is absolutely beyond me how any intelligent and marginally reasonable person can think that Palin is, or ever will be, an acceptable candidate. A friend of mine was raised as a Rep. Very rational, generally socially liberal yet rigid when it comes to rules. By all rights one of the moderate types that I would expect to apply the same high standards that she expects from everyday people to succeed to her candidates. But no, Palin's okay with her . . . And if people like her are willing to acquiesce (again giving her the benefit of the doubt that she can't possibly think Palin's a preferable candidate), then I fear we're stuck for a while before the bar might be off the floor again.
"Go read the Rolling Stone cover article about McCain if you have mistaken him for a war hero."
The guy would have been easier to Swiftboat than Kerry. We have film watching him crack for the Viet Cong. We have records showing he wrecked multiple planes. We have NO access to his post-war medical records (PTSD).
If John Kerry had done the same, he would have been crucified by the right.
Maybe John McCain can amend his socialist attack thingie: "I know socialists. I sang like a bird for them for five years in Viet Nam, my friends. I know one when I see one, and Obama is one. He twisted my arm at the debate and it made me bark my serial number and names of strategic placements of US troops, my friends".
And, news, you have back-up. 59% of Americans believe the Failin is not acceptable to be Pres.
newsinoh,
When your political party of choice has told you for 20+ years that "government is the problem", it is logical for you to have no respect for government. If you don't respect your government, it's not important for your elected officials to be competent - they just have to think the way you do.
Thus, Palin.
Roger - there's no shame in 'squealing' under torture. Use a little imagination.
