On the Road: Marietta, Ohio

When local field organizer Christian Lund took the stage just prior to Joe Biden's appearance on Tuesday night in Marietta, he asked those in the attendant crowd of about 4,000 to look at the sheets in their hands. Each sheet held four names, and each name had a phone number and a bar code for later data scanning. Lund asked the people in the crowd to make four phone calls to this targeted group, and then he demonstrated.

Lund got voicemail. Over the microphone, he left a message informing his phonee about where and when to early vote, as well as where and when the Obama volunteer office was located in town and what it's hours were. After he was finished, it was the crowd's turn. "We even got extra cell tower juice just for tonight" Lund told the crowd, so go ahead and make four quick calls on Barack Obama's behalf. They did.

The other day at Obama's rally in Toledo, the local organizer asked everyone in attendance to (1) early vote; (2) make 40 phone calls or knock 40 doors; and (3) take Election Day off to help the volunteering effort. This is routine practice at every single event the campaign holds, even at Denver's Invesco Field acceptance night speech. The largely Democratic crowd is given concrete, practical and manageable field tasks to accomplish.

The goal is gathering a larger and larger volunteer base. A whole night's shift of phone calls may seem intimidating to a lot of people, particularly introverts, but it's pretty hard to say no to four calls. Cleverly, Obama's campaign reasons that the most difficult part of volunteering is the first four calls or knocks. The first part is always the hardest, particularly for volunteers who've never worked for a campaign before. Once over the comfort threshold, a potential shift volunteer now feels invested in the work.

Here in Marietta, on the Ohio River in the heart of steel country, the Obama organization is as strong as anywhere. Southeast Ohio is the swing area in one of the great swing states. Marietta, Athens, Zanesville, Steubenville, New Philadelphia... these are the places in the southeast counties where Barack Obama needs to perform well in order to carry the state. During our stop in Columbus, Deputy Communications Director Tom Reynolds pointed to the recent Washington Post Ohio poll that showed Obama ahead of John Kerry's performance four years ago in southeast Ohio. Joe Biden's stops in St. Clairsville, Marietta, Athens and Lancaster show how seriously the Obama campaign is taking this region.

Though some very smart people such as Chuck Todd thought Biden's convention speech was uneven, I thought it was pitched to the right emotional level, particularly for steel towns in southeast Ohio where pundits endlessly pointed out that Obama wasn't making inroads during the primaries. Indeed, Marc Ambinder reported that Biden's convention speech "broke the dials" with a steelworker focus group down here when he delivered the line, "Joey, go bloody their nose so that you can walk down the street." And that feels about right, because Biden connected down here.

Though clearly worn from weeks of solid campaigning and long days with multiple stops, Biden spoke to the assembled crowd with gusto. As has been the case for weeks, the dominant topic was the economy.
Look, at the end of the day, there is a fundamental difference between John McCain and Barack Obama, Governor Palin and Joe Biden, and it can be distilled to one thing. How we measure progress in America. Barack Obama and I measure progress in terms of the dignity and respect for the middle class, the working people of America. Whether you have a job. Whether you have the ability to afford health care for your family. Whether or not you can fill your gas tank. Whether or not you can send your kid to college. And whether, whether or not as my dad used to say you can look your kid in the eye and say ‘honey, I promise you, I promise you, it’s going to be okay.’

Well it will be okay with us! We will keep that promise.

Biden got local, talking about his and Obama's support of the Delta Queen. "And folks, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention one thing; Barack Obama reminded me to remind you of. He’s also working to save the Delta Queen. The job security that it generates. That steamboat brings a lot of money here."

Speaking of John McCain's recent economic proposals, Biden joked that McCain had had "what Catholics call an epiphany" about the shift from "the fundamentals of the economy are strong" to acknowledging a serious crisis. "He didn’t all of a sudden acknowledge or realize that the economic policies of the last eight years had driven us into this hole," Biden said. "That the reason why this crisis was occurring was because of the policies supported. John didn’t see the light; John saw the Presidency receding from his grasp."

As for the Republicans, we made every good faith effort to get a story, but in the end they knew and we knew and they knew that we knew that they knew they were running out the clock on us. We stopped into the Columbus HQ on Saturday and spoke with Deputy Communications Director Jason Levine, explained in detail who we were and the story we were looking for -- asking for experienced and first-time Republican volunteers who could educate us and our readers about how the McCain campaign is working on the ground in Ohio.

Levine was cautiously friendly, and told us several times that we should probably be able to get a story, but they wanted to set something up so they could give us volunteers who would be on message. (That, in itself, is a complete contrast to the Obama campaign, who implicitly vests its volunteers with great trust, as they own this grassroots campaign.) After speaking with Levine twice and sending repeated emails, he ran out the clock.

It's fair enough. We're not their biggest priority. They probably assume if they haven't heard of us, how much exposure could photos of their huge phone banks with 40 phones and one lonely caller at their state headquarters three weeks before the election really get?

McCain Ohio State Headquarters - BrettMarty.com

As for the field offices themselves, we told you about the closed one in Troy. We were ushered out by rent-a-cops in Toledo (the second time I spoke with Levine), and there was a pencil-thin mustachioed rent-a-cop in the HQ where we got that picture.

We'll keep trying in good faith to speak to communications directors and stop into field offices, and if they're fair with us, we'll be fair with them. The problem the McCain folks have is that their offices are empty, and why would you want reporters to do a story on that, or on obviously manufactured volunteer conversations? So, we're not optimistic, but we're not quitting. They'll have to say it to our face.

As we mentioned in the liveblog last night, we stopped in West Virginia yesterday before the debate, so there'll be a Mountaineer State report, and we're at Michelle Obama's speech in Pittsburgh right now.

A fatal mistake to lower taxes for 95% of people? How is that a mistake?

Any of those builders, carpenters, plumbers, and hard working blue collar folks you dreamed up as you were writing your post actually make over $250,000? I didn't think so.......

And the Bradley Effect? You really haven't been paying attention have you?

You guys are watching too much media coverage. CNN, MSNBC, FOX. They love "Joe the (NOT) Plumber, Ayres and Acorn. THE VOTERS DO NOT CARE

The election is over. Sure, McCain will probably close strong wining the majority of undecideds, but it doesn't matter.

Obama is ahead in Virginia, Florida, Colorado, Ohio, and Nevada and he only needs 1 state. There are no events left. The media will drum up as much conflict and story lines as they can but its over.

All thats left is margin of victory.

Got to say that every time now I hear "Joe the Plumber" I think of Nixon's plumbers.
Also, the video with Barack and Joe on youtube has fantastic sound: they had a cameraperson, a sound engineer and a guy holding the book mic (visible as a shadow).
Having been in the press area on 3 Obama rallies recently, I can tell you that this is not unusual. Since the stump speeches are mostly scripted news crews always try to catch some real interactions. I wish we had more of those.

EV trends are all good

(AP) - A high-rise office building in the St. Louis suburb of Clayton has been evacuated after reports of an explosion.

Police evacuated several hundred people from the building just after 11 a.m., and several neighboring buildings were also evacuated as a precaution.

Witnesses told KSDK-TV they saw one person who appeared injured, but that was not immediately confirmed by authorities.

No smoke was visible from the building after the evacuation.

(Reuters) - Ireland's biggest bookmaker Paddy Power said Thursday it would pay out early more than 1 million euros (782,776 pounds) on bets that Barack Obama will be the next U.S. president, three weeks ahead of the election.

The Dublin-based bookmaker said it made the "unprecedented decision" to pay on bets taken so far, following Wednesday's final campaign debate between Obama and his Republican rival John McCain, which polls judged the Democrat to have won.

"We declare this race well and truly over and congratulate all those who backed Obama," Power said.

"Although he seemed a little out of sorts in last night's final debate we believe he has done more than enough to get him across the line on November 4."

The bookmaker said the overall betting trend had shown "one- way traffic" for the Illinois senator since the start of the summer, with odds shortening to 1-9, meaning a bet of 9 euros is required to make 1 euro profit.

Power said it had taken more than 10,000 bets on the 2008 U.S. presidential election, the majority in support of Obama.

In June a wager of 100,000 euros was placed on Obama to win at odds of 1-2, yielding a payout of 150,000 euros, it added...

Obama Election Night Party Likely In Grant Park

It's not a done deal yet, but all indications are that campaign officials are leaning toward Hutchinson Field on the south end of Grant Park as the site of their election night party, CBS Informed.
The field is home to softball diamonds, the popular summer Lollapalooza music festival and was the site of the mass pope John Paul held in Chicago nearly 30 years ago.
If Grant Park is chosen as the venue, it would not be the first big outdoor event for Obama. He announced his presidential run outside the old state capitol in Springfield on a very cold day last February and gave his nomination acceptance speech at Denver's Mile High Stadium.
CBS 2 first reported last month that Grant Park was on Obama campaign officials' shortlist. They tentatively decided on it late last week. The negotiations with the city and park district have begun. Security arrangements are reportedly starting to take shape, and Mayor Richard M. Daley reportedly said it was a great idea.
The record low for Nov. 4 in Chicago is 15 degrees. CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine asked Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce President Jerry Roper what he anticipated for the night.
"Weather's never a problem Chicago. We know how to handle it," Roper said. "And there'll be a lot of warmth that night, if indeed it does take place in Grant Park."
Roper added that the event would be a "huge economic boost for our city."
"People have been following Barack Obama around the world, and the world will have their eyes on Chicago that evening," Roper said. "With the Pope's visit from 30 years ago, to Lollapalooza, this city knows how to handle big events. … We're prepared."

Sean....love your updates! There were a lot of telling details in the post, but the one that struck me most is that not only was that McCain office empty, but they were using landlines. wtf? At the Obama office where I volunteered they had cell phones, which has got to be a lot cheaper, more efficient and mobile. Team McCain needs to join the 21st Century if they're going to compete. What am I saying? Do whatever you want team McCain just make sure you get Caribou Barbie back to AK in time for Thanksgiving.

World Series game six start pushed back for Obama show

(AFP) — Major League Baseball has agreed to a 15-minute delay in the start of a possible sixth game of the World Series to allow Fox television to join the US networks airing a special by Barack Obama.

The Democratic presidential candidate has purchased 30 minutes of time on each major US network starting at 8 p.m. Eastern time (0000 GMT) on October 29 but Fox would have had a conflict with baseball's best-of-seven championship.

National League champion Philadelphia will face either defending champion Boston or worst-to-first fairy-tale team Tampa Bay in the World Series, which would have had a sixth game if necessary start at 8:20 Eastern.

Fox announced Thursday that Major League Baseball had agreed to push back the first pitch to 8:35, allowing Fox to sell 30 minutes of advertising time to Obama, who is running against Republican John McCain for the US presidency.

"Fox will accommodate Senator Obama's desire to communicate with voters in this longform format," Fox said in a statement.

"We are pleased that Major League Baseball has agreed to delay the first pitch of the World Series Game Six for a few minutes in order for Fox to carry his program on October 29.

"If requested, the network would be willing to make similar time available to Senator McCain's campaign."

The time involved for the special ahead of the November 4 election will be some of the costliest in US sports television, but Obama has been awash in funding and outspending McCain in key battleground states.

Obama and McCain spent a combined 11 million dollars to buy US prime-time television advertisements during NBC's broadcasts of the Beijing Olympics this summer.

The move, underscoring Obama's emerging financial advantage over his rival as the campaign enters its final stretch, will cost Obama millions on each network but gives him an unprecedented platform for a major-party candidate less than a week before US voters go to the ballot box.

In lieu of a trackback:

The ups and downs of the ground game campaigns: "We're votin' for the n***er!"

Summary:

Volunteer headquarters everywhere are bustling, the underlying data machines are humming -- and then there's the way the Obama campaign uses its rallies to convert sympathisers into volunteers and plug them into the data. The actual shoe leather work is as exhausting as always -- until you encounter a moment that really brings home just how surreal politics, and this race in particular, is.
