When we stopped into Barack Obama’s field office in Nebraska ten days ago, Obama’s State Director John Berge sat down with us for a fascinating conversation about the innards of Democratic efforts in the state, the most overt goal being the attempt to win one single, solitary Electoral Vote in the second congressional district.
Only Nebraska and Maine divide their state electoral votes on a district-by-district basis rather than winner take all. For those who remember the proportional allocation of the Democratic delegate race during the nomination battle, Nebraska is significant because a wider statewide loss can be mitigated by strength in a particular area. Rather than lose 5-0, Obama could lose 4-1 and gain a 2 EV swing. Omaha is a compact congressional district, one of three in Nebraska, and clearly the most Democratic district.
Were Obama to win Kerry states and add Iowa and New Mexico (very strong probabilities, with New Hampshire at Obama +4.5% as the closest current projection and Iowa and New Mexico outside the margin of error), he would have 264 electoral votes. Adding Omaha would pretty much end any thought of a 269-269 tie. In addition, Obama projects leads in Colorado (6.1%), Virginia (4.5%), Florida (2.2%), Ohio (2.1%), Nevada (1.9%), and North Carolina (0.1%).
Berge told us that we’d know if the Nebraska 2d congressional district internals had the McCain camp worried if we started seeing Republican surrogates in the area. With every day's time so precious for each candidate -- an issue of resource allocation -- campaigns have to prioritize where the smartest expenditure of time will be. The nominee or VP nominee going to an area is a big deal.
Tomorrow night, a mere month before the election, not a surrogate but Sarah Palin herself is visiting Omaha, while Barack Obama just opened a second field office. Early voting is already underway.
"Oh c'mon, do we have to?" aside, if the McCain campaign is defending Omaha rather than spending time in Michigan, there is no bluffing going on -- McCain is holding on for dear life at this stage.

They don't because more Pubs actually vote. There's a possibility that Plouffe, Obama, Axelrod, and ccre with a little help from Dean paving the way have flipped American politics upside down and the Pubs will have trouble catching up for years.

Also, what many people missed about the Springstein concert. Even though it was free, the campaign made "VIP tickets" available to get closer to the stage. In order to get them you had to sign up at a field office and actually put some time in volunteering. 21,000 people from southeast PA got those tickets.

Poll: Obama by 7 in Ohio
It's Obama by 49-42 according to Columbus Dispatch poll of 2262 likely Ohio voters, with just a two-point margin of error.
Falling far behind in Ohio is a nightmare scenario for McCain; he almost surely can't win without it.
And remember, absentee early voting has already started there.

70 million watched the Biden/Palin debate and about 50 million watched the first Prez debate. Consistent for all dial-tested viewers was one theme. The good Conservatives seem to think the best bet is to scare people into voting for McCain to avoid a government with a mandate, ie 60 Senators and Dem Prez etc.. You think that will work? Really?! Taxes is reason for McCain. I have one close friend who makes about $1 million/yr and that's his main issue. I get that. Unless, however you fall into the category of say $400k to $1.5MM/yr as income, I'd think the tax strategy coming from Obama is more appelaing than McCain. Obama intends on cutting taxes for 95% of us. You wouldn't really feel the difference in the upper strata of income until you get to about $600k. Anything over $1.5MM, I don't really care if those people are frustrated because God forbid they have to pay as high of taxes as there were under Reagan and Clinton.

Anyone that thinks the economy will became a back burner issue better be prepared. By next week many companies will be reporting their quarterly earnings (losses) and it will not be pretty. We will have a few days of dramatic Dow drops - what we have seen so far is mild by historic standards. The media have hyped the large number, but percentage-wise its been mild.
The Europeans are currently unable to agree upon a plan to deal with the financial melt-down, and how to deal with the world now that the US has fallen from its perch of global finance capitol. Everything is held together with threads made of gossamer.
I'm in favor of all states splitting their EVs -- one per district, with a within-state majority win getting both senatorial EVs, and a tie splitting them. I think it's fairer all around, and (hey whaddya know?) it wouldn't favor Republicans as much as the current electoral college system, which of course gives more weight to smaller states, more of which tend to vote R. But I don't think it would actually create a full nationwide campaign. Larger states would still get less attention -- if you're going for those two statewide senatorial EVs, why not work in a smaller state where you don't have to get as many districts to achieve a tipping point? Also, more urban districts would get more attention because you can more efficiently campaign in denser areas, I would think. On the other hand, split districts in states that are overall no-contest would get more play. It would certainly shake things up. Now all we need is 2/3 of each house of congress and then a majority in 3/4of the state legislatures to go for it. Right.

Actually it would put more influence on gerrymandering of districts which already makes congressional districts stay with the same party like 80% of the time. Which ever party has control when districts are realigned can influence the pres election. Bad idea all the way around.
