This is pretty interesting:
[Norm] Coleman told reporters that he would not be appearing at a planned rally with McCain this afternoon. Could it be McCain's sliding polling numbers in Minnesota? His attacks on Obama? Coleman said he needs the time to woThere are at least three groups of Republicans that might have an interest in distancing themselves from John McCain. Firstly, purple-state moderates like Coleman and Gordon Smith who don't like the campaign's tone. Secondly, the anti-bailout economic populists in the House who might be looking ahead to 2010 and 2012. And thirdly, true conservatives who never trusted McCain that much to begin with.
rk on suspending his own negative ads.
"Today," he said, "people need hope and a more positive campaign is a start."
Far more so than Obama, McCain is dependent on the goodwill of fellow Republicans. With McCain having opted for public financing, RNC funds are an important part of his advertising budget. Because he's way behind Obama on McCain-branded field offices and ground operatives, he is depending on assistance from state and local party organizations. Republican enthusiasm lags behind that of Democrats, and so volunteer resources are scarcer; conservative activists will need to decide if they're going to make phone calls to support McCain or to help save their local Republican Congressman.
The further that McCain falls in the polls, the worse these conflicts become. And it won't help when the campaign is putting out statements like this one (McCain "blew up" the bailout?) and this one (it's Obama's fault that some very small minority of McCain supporters have taken to making violent statements?), which won't pass the media's smell test and reek of stress, sleep deprivation, and low morale in Crystal City.

Hey everyone: I have been trying to think what to do about productively acting on my total frustration at the McCain camp doing its insane hate based campaign that seems like nascent fascism.
Here are some McCain offices to call and shame volunteers that they are associated with it. I am a Baptist Christian myself, and I definitely intend to ask his Christian volunteers how they reconcile supporting this stuff with their faith.
Have a cell phone with a few extra minutes and no penalty for long distance? Want to make some calls too? Here are some numbers to get started with.

Who likes this idea?
Greatest. Headline. Ever.
The emperor has no coat tails.
Coleman is getting desperate -- he just decided to suspend his negative ads against Franken because of the economy. In reality, he lost 10% in polls over the weekend due to the negative ads, and he'll do anything at this point to not lose.
McCain campaign: The Real Barack Obama is Osama Bin Laden.
Hysterical!
Or maybe he's got rabies.
His campaign is behaving like a cornered animal. Time for the October surprise.
Robert you're wasting your time. Start organizing instead of blogging. Knock on a few doors instead of preaching to the converted.
I hope Norm Coleman goes down in flames. The way that he conducted his campaign after the Wellstone plane crash is nothing less than disgusting.
PS: Calling the main campaign number, you can leave messages, or....
You can go to the directory and punch in random number/alpha prefixes and talk to head honchos of their campaign sometimes.
I already organize, and make calls. Right now I just want to prevent political violence. I think there is a very real chance of a right wing wacko (no offense to you level-headed right wingers around here (PeteKent excluded)).
I totally predicted this...
There were also statements from a Rep congressman from Illinois and the former Rep governor of Michigan.
Moderate Republicans would get embarrassed by this line of attack and distance themselves from it, which really undermines its effectiveness.
George Will should be fun to listen to on Sunday.
PS - I should say - I have no official role with the campaign, just volunteer occasionally.
Bradley Effect: If 5% of all Americans are racist, Obama still wins.
Obama 343, McCain 195
McCain is Not Racist, as Far as I Know
Checkout my piece on Youth Voter Registration. For every 100 registered voters aged 18-24, the democrats accrue a 9 vote advantage.
2nd Debate: Live Analysis
the only people left to vote for McCain are the Evangelical crowd. So he should get about 23% of the vote. Great Strategy John!
hey guys, This post is slightly unrelated but it concerned me.... (I was trying to click over from the last post) What happened to Brett Marty's website? It looks like its been suspended!!! Can anyone confirm why that has happened?? www.brettmarty.com
This is great: The GOP risks a blowout in congress to unite fundraising and party voting squarely behind McCain's presidential hopes, putting Mitch McConnell and John Boehner a heartbeat away from losing to democrats. McCain squanders his fighting chance. GOP senators throw McCain under the bus. The Democratic party is one bank collapse away from a filibuster-proof majority. The republicans are all so fucked.
The moderates republicans hates McCain.
Only the religious fundamentalist (like PeteKent) support him and the ignorant Palin.
Well, hmmm....Gordon Smith is NOT a moderate (though he pretends to be one in election years.)
C'mon Nate, quit jerkin' us around and make the Today's Polls post already . . .
Oalin at Flyers game
More stupidity from the McCain campaign. I can't wait to see the video of her smiling and waving as the boos cascade down.
"
the ignorant Palin
"
Redundant.
Gordon Smith is not a moderate politically, but he does act civilly. I guess today if you don't accuse your opponents of terrorism, that makes you a moderate.
The Republican Party should have had a huddle earlier to settle this stuff out, because right now they are falling apart. Should have figured it out!
The wheels have definitely come off the straight talk express. I'm dumbfounded by the statement that Nicole Wallace put out regarding Obama's comments.
Perhaps she should check out this video to see the natural progression of the anger and hate they're protecting as free speech.
http://blacksnob.blogspot.com/
"Some Morning Inspiration" indeed.
The rage and anger will not stop even after the election. Obama will be so wounded he will be unable to govern.
The rage will only increase as people find out how Obama has corrupted the voting system throung his wingnut group ACORN.
There will be no coming together after the election. There will be no reconciliation.
Rage, Rage into the night.
robert - I think it's a good idea. Phone calls always help.
geeze, RCP now shows the spread at 6.6 - the greatest ever spread for this campaign ...
J
I suspect this Franken ad, run this week, might have had something to do with this announcement.
That had to be embarassing as hell for Coleman.
Wow. That was...reprehensible.
I can't believe even McCain would support his followers yelling some of the things I've heard.
How do his more normal supporters sleep at night?
I thought we banned the words "Bradley Effect" from this site. LOL. And as Real Joe noted, because Obama's half white, his Bradley effect is cut in half. Rich Merritt
Here's hoping that all Republicans with any sort of integrity at all jump ship from McCain because the campaign he's running has totally jumped the shark.
McCain/Palin supporters are truly crazy - who would want to associate themselves with these people? They are everything wrong about America.
@ Robert - I personally would not waste time with anyone in the McCain Campaign.
I DO write to leaders of the Republican Party - esp in my State of CA - and I write to the Media daily.
It is high time that the anyone sane in the GOP stand up and loudly and clearly denounce and reject the disgusting tactics of the McCain/Palin Camp
The socialist left wingnut blogs have been tearing down our country for years.
This ACORN outrage is sooo annoying. Obviously there are some problems there, but it is not "voter fraud" it is registration fraud. No votes are going to be affected.
Is the argument seriously supposed to be that the Dallas Cowboys are all going to Nevada to vote for Obama. WTF?! quit the false outrage, and if you are actually outraged then educate yourself a little bit.
There will be no coming together after the election. There will be no reconciliation.
Rage, Rage into the night.
What actions do you think McCain supporters should take if Obama is elected?
Hey, I just came back from a trip to Seattle where there's a hot governor's race between a Democratic incumbant and her challenger Dino Rossi, the Republican. Mr. Rossi's ads say..."voting for Barack Obama? We need change in Olympia too!" And if that wasn't enough, he's listed his party affiliation to be listed as GOP Party rather than Republican on the ballot! Cooties, maybe...hot potato for sure.
Nate,
For once, I'm going to harshly criticize your model from the opposite direction.
No way McCain still has nearly a 10% chance of winning...
Work with me now and set the dial to <1%.
Wan...just kidding.
Correction, Gordon Smith was acting civilly, up until "Merkely is in favor of rapists".
phil james - I think there are plenty of sane republicans who once supported McC, or even still do -- most of them intensely dislike the inciting violence, and while local phone calls may not make it through to the national level, the national ones, and ones to McC's senate office certainly will get through.
I certainly don't support McCain, but he was once a decent guy - or so I thought ...
Your little democratic talking points to not go negative will make not difference. Go back and get new wingnut orders from Dkos and the Obama campaign.
McCain is 72, he has absolutely NOTHING to lose here. He doesn't care about his reputation. He has all of the money he needs. He doesn't need the Senate.
HE IS GOING TO 'BURN OBAMA'S POLITICAL HOUSE DOWN' til the end of the election.
Look, if were going to lose like this, we will take Obama down with us.
“He’s [Obama} a person that you do not have to be scared as president of the United States” - McCain
Erratic much?
McCain looked downright embarrassed when a woman said Obama was an Arab and couldn’t be trusted. You reap what you sow.
After reading about yard signs here I wasn't going to have any this year, but a campaign volunteer for a state rep candidate stopped by to see if they could put one in my yard. So I will have at least one.

Regarding ACORN - isn't it a law that they have to turn in all registrations regardless of if they're valid or not? I read that they flag the ones that are invalid.
I don’t know how the crowd’s going to react, but we are playing our most heated rival, the New York Rangers,” he said. “So if there are boos, we won’t know if it’s directed at anyone. It’s probably directed at the Rangers.” Regarding the link posted earlier on Palin's visit to PA... So I guess if they boo it is because the opposing team is in the building. That is awesome.
PALIN ABUSED AUTHORITY AS GOVERNER. BREAKING NEWS ON MSNBC.

ACORN AYERS OSAMA BIN LADEN. GO GO GO.
sniperct,
Yes, I believe it is.
The spin on this is that somehow this is voter fraud and the dems are stealing votes, which is STUPID and demonstrably false. These are just paid registration gatherers looking to pad their stats and get extra $$. Shameful, but not even acorn's fault. The reporting on this is pathetic. All networks and outlets are reporting this like a vote stealing effort.
McCain can now accept her resignation from the ticket and put in Mittens Romney.
Troopergate is out - Palin broke the law. Here we go fellas....

What a slippery slope McCain has navigated for himself. It reminds me of my days in College when I didn't properly plan and I needed a paper in two days and I had to continue to re write, change a paragraph, use white out, strike out, etc. to get my paper done.
At the end of the day, it was never the right solution for delivering a quality product.
They listed Todd Palin as "the first gentleman" I guess "dude" was too informal
McCain is absolutely despicable. He is proving that the Rolling Stone article is not an exaggeration. When people like Norm Coleman won't even appear with him, it's clear they're worried about the damage he's doing not only to his own credibility but to the GOP in general.

Panel: Palin Abused Her Power in Firing of Commissioner (Fox News)
Fox News ^
Posted on October 10, 2008 7:36:35 PM CDT by DocT111
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A state legislative panel has concluded that Sarah Palin abused her power in the firing of the state's public safety commissioner.
The findings were released after lawmakers emerged Friday from a private session in Anchorage where they spent more than six hours discussing a politically charged ethics report into the firing by Gov. Palin.
The legislative panel began its public session by discussing whether to release the report's findings. The investigation was examining whether Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, fired a state commissioner to settle a family dispute. The report also is expected to touch on whether Palin's husband meddled in state affairs and whether her administration inappropriately accessed employee medical records.
Critics claim Palin fired Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan after months of pressure on him to fire Mike Wooten, a state trooper involved in a nasty divorce and custody dispute with the governor's sister.
"I think there are some problems in this report," Republican state Sen. Gary Stevens. "I would encourage people to be very cautious, to look at this with a jaundiced eye."
Okay, this isn't a problem, guys. I already have an ad the McCain campaign can run:
"Barack Obama fired the Alaskan Chief of Police because he wouldn't bow to portraits of Osama bin Laden and then he blamed Sarah Palin. Can you trust Barack Obama?"
Sarah Palin: Brilliant pick by McCain! Game changer! The next generation Ronald Reagan! The Republican Obama!
Or not.
"For the reasons explained in section IV of this report, I find that Governor Sarah Palin abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act"
It goes on to suggest that she did not technically break any laws
oh fu**
Sarah Palin - the only one running who has executive experience. Is this the experience we want?
Hey, she's a maverick.
Good vet job, Dobson.
Thank you Lord (from an atheist).
here's the Rolling Stone article by Tim Dickinson that everyone should be required to read before they vote for McCain.
But if Coleman wasn't at the rally, then who the hell was that constipated-looking guy sitting right behind McCain in the picture I saw of it?
It sure looks like the Li'l Senator to me.
Will Palin now give a press conference?
I'll answer my own question: no.
Will the media have balls and demand one?
Again: no.
A new slogan for the McCain campaign:
Palin: Not criminal, just unethical.
hey rich merritt,
how about you stop posting links to your stupid blog on every single thread. Seriously.
Simon,
If it bothers you, don't click it.

The news about Palin abusing her executive power
IS GREAT NEWS!!!! For JOHN McCAIN!!!!!
Simon
I agree that Rich should chill out on the blog pimping, but that kind of incivility is not called for.
Ding Dong the Witch is Dead! Which Old Witch the Palin Witch!
do you guys think this hurts the ticket much?
"McCain can now accept her resignation from the ticket and put in Mittens Romney."
NOBODY will accept the position as running mate right now. Nobody.
Okay, so what does it mean, she abused her power, but broke no law. Isn't that an oxymoron?
i'm almost packed to jump off the ship
Unbelievable. The McCain camp is awful. Everybody needs to understand what's going on HERE.
The McCain camp is actually defending the worst of their supporters. They should be ashamed of themselves.
All Obama said was "Nothing's easier than riling up a crowd by stoking anger and division. But that's not what we need right now in the United States." and the McCain camp considers this statement an assault? Not only is this petty, it makes them seem like pussies too.
k lol. YES.
She's Melting She's Melting LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE!
I can hardly wait for the McCain camp press release on this. I really hope that they use the "she didn't break any actual laws" defense.
I assume they will call the bipartisan investigation a poltical hit job.
Breaking news...
The McCain campaign has received permission to use "Ring of Fire" as their official campaign song!!!
I think that the way Obama has run his campaign over the past million months shows he has determination, persistance and the art of persuasion. Alllll he has to do is keep doing what he is doing, slow and steady wins the race. McCain, like many of you predicted and what I already knew, has self imploded. It's over. Now if all of us talking all this smack, as well as all those in blue and red physically and actually vote, we will have something to celebrate..until then...it's still anyones game. I can't imagine McCain winning, but I am afraid to imagine what will happen to us if he does.
Thanks, Robby, I think, but I've received from very nice emails from folks who appreciate what I've written. And my comments are as relevant as anything else on here. (I don't post just to promote, but combine it with participation). And tt's pretty easy to skip over things you don't want to go to. Right? But yeah, let's leave the lack of civility to the McCain / Palin rallies.
"The McCain campaign has received permission to use "Ring of Fire" as their official campaign song!!!"
HA. I wonder if the late great Johnny Cash would want his song to be used by McCain, considering how disgraceful his campaign has become.

Au contraire. Cindy McCain can step up. Of course, they'll forfeit the votes from Arizona, but it's a pissant state* and they may now lose it anyway.
McCain is f*cked.

Revenge is SWEET.
Robert, I like your idea, too, from a gut level. Thanks for taking the time to post the phone numbers. I know for me if someone from the McCain campaign were to call me and try to shame me, I'd hang up on them. There are such deep fundamental differences between the supporters on both sides. Shame is not something I want to heap on others. Guilt, maybe, but shame is always counter productive.
I'm from upstate NY. I'm in NH Sat/Sun/Mon/Tue for election day weekend. It's my third trip. Let's keep blogging, keep calling, keep knocking on doors. It's getting down to the wire now. We can celebrate on Nov 5. Until then, it's 110 percent all of the time.
Yes we can.
In additon...
Lets see them keep up their character attack crap on obama now when they have to spend the next few days defending on this.
Game. Set. Match.
Please don't discourage others from posting blog or other site links. I tend to click on these if I have time--just out of curiosity. Honestly, just don't click on them if it bothers you. It's not like somebody is posting 25 paragraphs you have to scroll through. :)
Now back to our regularly scheduled blog thread.
Stepper,
I disagree. Romney or Huckabee would be seen as team players that stepped in to take one for the team. It would improve their chances in 2012. They would not be blamed for losing.
Moosewoman shoots McCain in foot again.
Please don't call Coleman a moderate. He's not. He's a Bush minion, start to finish. The fact that he can symbolically oppose ANWR drilling while voting for every other big-oil bill, and get gullible voters to believe he "cares about the environment," should not fool such intelligent people as the two who run this site.
Coleman is not moderate. He's a disgrace to Minnesota.

I guess being the Governor of a small state is a lot like being a community organizer, except you can defend your fucked up family with an unchecked abuse of executive power.

Don't you mean America instead of Obama. People like you are acting like a bunch of stalker boyfriends. If you can't have America no one can, even if you have to kill her.
You make me sick. Please cease to exist.
real joe, you should really consider voting for third party, like the constitution party(which I believe Ron Paul endorsed) or the libertarian party... if you don't want to vote for McCain or Obama. It is a vote tossed out, but it does send a message to the GOP to get their shit together.
The GOP really needs a thorough cleaning out, and maybe a new party should be formed to represent the right.
This video makes me have a little more respect for McCain:

Also, Palin abused her power? Guess it's time for a new running mate, if he can find one.

next debate is on the economy
Vanessa...
I think this actually could hurt the Dems in congress...
We want McCain to appear to be a viable candidate so that the RNC wastes money supporting him. The further behind and less viable he is the greater the odds that the RNC will give up and focus on supporting embattled congresspersons and senators.
just a thought...
A classic glass half full verdict. Repubs will say "see she didn't break the law". Dems will say "Don't grant her power, she can't be trusted"
Her ratings will continue to slowly erode

Is it possible that McCain's choice of states (Iowa? Minnesota?) has something to do with which states' RNC organizations want him around, and which don't?
Is it possible that McCain is simply going where the local RNC is willing to put out for him?

Ohhh and don't mind me jumping into this conversation. Using Johnny cash song for the McCain campaign is sacreligious. I've been waiting to see this all my adult life. It doesn't get any better than this!
Alaska legislative report finds the Republican VP nominee unlawfully abused her authority in firing Alaska’s public safety commissioner.
263-page report concludes that a family grudge was a contributing reason for Walt Monegan’s dismissal.
“Governor Palin knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda, to wit: To get Trooper Michael Wooten fired,”

Please McCain, don't let the history books write your final chapter in this way. It's just so sad for a formerly respectful man like John McCain to have his legacy destroyed like this. Where is the John McCain from 2000? You used to be my favorite Republican, now you're just a joke.
Well....
A week ago, I wrote how this outcome could give McCain the perfect out if Palin started to bring down his campaign.
.....
This is the perfect chance. He can pick Romney, an "expert" on the economy, and salvage his campaign. Palin has still damaged his campaign, but...
It all depends on how smart he is. If he's smart and wants to win, he will take this chance.
But seeing the decisions that he's made, I doubt he'll even consider it.
Cugel you just became my hero...
"
Repubs will say "see she didn't break the law". "
She did. Read the full report. She violated Alaska Statue 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act:
"The legislature reaffirms that each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust".
This was a 12-0 vote, and there are only 5 Democratic members on that panel.
She could easily be required to resign as governor.

Sarah Palin is a far worse candidate than Dan Quayle or GW Bush ever were. She's also a worse choice for 2008 than Snowe, Fiorina, Whitman, Todd-Whitman, Hutchison, Rice, Romney, Ridge, Lieberman, Graham, Crist, Jindal, or huckabee would have been.
McCain you were used like a tool.
"Where is the John McCain from 2000?"
Not in a position to win... at all costs.
McCain's campaign just went from f*cked to totally f*cked.
I think McCain may have started a fire he can't put out. He should also get Sarah to stop the incitement to violence.

Keynesianism is not socialism.
Keynesianism is a variant of neo-liberalism economy but with more intervention of the State in the economy.
Matt Drudge must be out partying tonight. No mention of the Palin findings yet! Usually, he updates it BEFORE it's even a real story!
Becky,
the report specifically says that it was an abuse of power, but "a proper and lawful exercise of her constitutional and statutory authority".
Doesn't seem to mesh, but sounds like... < she fired Monegan for personal reasons (an abuse of power) but she is legally allowed to "fire executive branch department heads">
Any word from Camp McPlain yet?

"McCain's campaign just went from f*cked to totally f*cked."
Is it weird that I feel bad about him being this pathetically fucked? I'm not sure why I feel sorry for him, but I do. Maybe those POW stories have gotten to me. Anyway, fuck him, GO OBAMA!
we ARE all Hussein's...
go BHO
McCain literally had a chance until he picked Steve Schmidt to help him out. Frankly, he should have hired Karl Rove. Would have some backlash, but in the end Rove wouldn't have been dumb enough to tell him to pick Palin. I hate Rove, but why pick the inexperienced protege when you can have the real deal? If you're going to go in the gutter anyway, why not pick the best at it? I think Carville, Begala, and Shrum would probably admit I'm dead-on with this one. McCain is dumb.
Is Jack-Be-Nimble the new Real Joe?
Becky, Everyone,
The whole meat of this is on the top of page 8. Check it out.

He's a right wing tool. He won't post it.
Vote for Reform. Vote Palin.
The McCain campaign is like the Hindenberg, full of hot air and going down in flames.
Full of explosive gas would be more accurate on both counts.
CT Supreme Court legalizes gay marriage.
Yay!!!! :)
I think the fine line that's being drawn is that she violated the Ethics Act but didn't violate state employment law. She had the right to fire the guy, and, basically, could have fired him for no reason BUT while he was in office, she put improper pressure on him.
Watch--those who had fits about Clinton's parsing of words (and, as an attorney, I truly think that whole shebang was some crappy deposition techniques by the opposite side . . .), will now parse words even further to defend Palin.
Bottom line--unethical abuse of power--period.

I wonder if McCain is purposely blowing up the Republican Party and the neocon movement. He couldn't be doing a better job.
I voted for McCain in 2000 in CA primary, thinking he was a decent man. But if you read the Rolling Stone article by Tim Dickinson, you realize he's always been a "spoiled brat" (quote from another former POW who's known McCain for years).
Has anyone noticed? North friggin' Dakota is now in play!
Could any republican win this year though? Esp with the economy being this bad? The country seems to gravitate to Dems for economy issues (which I find odd that Dems don't win more often) and after a horrendous 8 years for Repubs....?
McCain now seems more like a sacrificial lamb.
This is a sad day for a Democrat. It reminds me in my younger days when the other baseball team (the big rival) became a shitty easy team to whoop all over the field. You never felt good about it.
We still need to fight on for American and fix what has been f$#ked by Bushy.
"she violated the Ethics Act but didn't violate state employment law."
They just said on TV that she DID violate the law.
I am seriously going to blow a gasket over the way this ACORN story is being reported.
There was no VOTER fraud PERIOD. None has even been alleged, yet that is how it is reported.
AHHHHH
I suspect that John McCain will continue to battle for the presidency, however unpredictable it's methods.
I've seen football teams down two touchdowns and a field goal, with 2 minutes to go and get into their hurry up offense. They make every attempt to try to win, but it's inevitable that the outcome is clear even before the 2 minute hurry up offense.
McCain has initiated his 2 minute hurry up offense with a list of color coded laminated plays and not sure which one will work or not work. But in 2 minutes, you got to pick one, two or twelve of them.
She didn't break the employment law but DID break the Ethics LAW.
That's like not being indicted on one felony but being indicted on another.
She can close her mouth now.
Rove would've forced McCain to pick Romney or possibly Portman. how stupid can he be to accept such a joke for VP? This is not a year where thatcould fly. After 8 years of George W. Bush the country is wide awake and not going to take a flyer on another moron. In '88 against Dukakis fine, in 2000 after Clinton/Lewinsky fine, but this character takes the cake. PAt and Bay Buchanon want to believe the economy sunk McCain's chances, but it's Palin and was always destined to be. She's absolutely horrendous. She has no redeeming qualities as a national politician. The fact that she rallies a big chunk of the bas is completely moot because she turns off way more than she excites and inspires. 50% of the country can't stand her, 30% of the country is slightly turned off by her and 20% of the country loves her. Where exactly does that get you? Oh yeah, about 10 points behind.
"They just said on TV that she DID violate the law"
OH! they "said it on TV"!!! then of course it MUST be true.
Thanks Matt.
So its all about how you parse it. She did not break the law as defined by her constitutional and statutory authority but she failed to comply with the ethics statute of the state of Alaska
Bottom line - she broke the law. She's fucked
She "violated the public trust". That's the key message. She's a lawbreaker and an abuser of power. It's over.
More like a hockey team trying to defend a double major penalty, trailing in the final game of a championship.
Guess which hockey mom is in the penalty box.
There was recently another of those big jumps (10+ points) for McCain on Intrade. Similar drop for Obama...they have now more or less returned to their state before the jump.
I was thinking about what might be occurring in these cases (which Nate drew attention to in a post a few weeks ago). Intrade (I think) has an option where your "bid" or "ask" offer only appears if the contract trades above or below a preset price. In this case, someone would simply have to force a trade above/below a critical threshold and a cascade of automatic transactions would take place. So the "suspicious trader" may not even be putting that much money on the line to cause these fluctuations.
I don't think this Palin scandal is going to have much effect, sad to say.
Maybe some voters will care, but for the majority it was all about the economy and it still is all about the economy.
And don't think this will make McCain give up on character assassination: like Bush dodging the draft but still attacking Kerry for actually serving in Vietnam, it will only make them attack more violently.
Good news - its too late for McCain to fire Palin
Bad news - expect the McCain campaign to go nuclear now.
Basically, this gives Alaska the right to censure or impeach her but they don't have to pay Monegan for backpay/wrongful discharge.
Nope, no cooties.
Simply a Nate mistake.

LOL - Yes, that constipated guy sure is Norm Coleman. God, these reporters can't get ANYTHING right! I mean if we didn't have the internet, pictures and video...
@spoonarcherpalin
We're on the same page, just posted something similar.
If he wasn't so dishonorable and swarmy I would feel bad for him, but screw him. He deserves what he gets at this point and a loss of respect is only the beginning.
Hearing that Palin broke the law but it was not criminal reminds me of Reagans's AG, Meese, who, upon being cleared of criminal charges in connection with some scandal (I think it was Iran-Contra( proclaimed that he had been vindicated. Just like a certain kind of self-righteous Republican (not that there haven't been similar Dems) to believe that if it isn't criminal it's OK).
They can't drop Palin. she could resign from the ticket, but her name goes on the ballot and in special meeting (I believe of the Rep, Nat. Comm) to formally adopt a replacement. They've goty t grin and bear it.
In a way it's shame. McCain used to be a man of honor. now he goes down in history (quite soon, in fact) with a throroughly tarnished reputationa and as the author of the biggest Republican collaspe since 1964. (Of course, Goldwater was a person of honor, but he kept it.)
I propose a contest. Who can do the best imitationof PeteKent justifying Palin?
This one's over.
Just when you think it can't get any worse for McCain, it does:
"McCain faces conservative backlash over mortgage plan
* Story Highlights
* GOP candidate meets resistance from within own party on mortgage plan
* McCain proposes government buying and refinancing bad mortgages
* Editorial: Plan a "gift to lenders who abandoned any sense of prudence"
* McCain hopes plan will resonate with moderate and undecided voters
By Alexander Mooney
(CNN) -- John McCain is facing a fresh round of anger from members of his own party deeply opposed to the Arizona senator's proposal for the federal government to purchase troubled mortgage loans.
John McCain first mentioned his mortgage relief plan during Tuesday's town-hall debate with Barack Obama.
John McCain first mentioned his mortgage relief plan during Tuesday's town-hall debate with Barack Obama.
The pointed backlash from several economic conservatives -- many of whom already distrust McCain's commitment to free-market principles -- couldn't come at a worse time for the Republican presidential nominee less than four weeks before Election Day as he stares at a significant deficit in national and state polls.
But at a time when McCain can't afford to worry about a lack of support from his party's base, several conservatives are openly criticizing the plan as a flagrant reward for reckless behavior among lenders.
In a sharply worded editorial on its Web site Thursday, the editors of The National Review -- an influential bastion of conservative thought -- derided the plan as "creating a level of moral hazard that is unacceptable" and called it a "gift to lenders who abandoned any sense of prudence during the boom years." Video Watch the candidates' plans get the 'no bull' test »
Prominent conservative blogger Michelle Malkin went one step further, calling the plan "rotten" and declaring on her blog, "We're Screwed '08."
I was wondering when this would happen. McCain was trying another wild swing for the fences, but he forgot that he's always on very thin ice with the base. Any sign that he's about to betray them and go wild with "socialist" ideas and they'll pull out and let him sink.
They will be tempted to do this anyway in order not to be associated with what is shaping up as an historic defeat, at least similar to 1988.
I don't think this can continue into Reagan 1984 territory, the electorate is too polarized. But, I could see Obama winning close to 400 electoral votes. Yes, I know that's insane, and 1 month ago I'd have bet my life savings that it's impossible, but that's the emerging reality.
Palin is close to Falin ... Felon ... Failin ...

I don't trade on there, soI don't know for sure, but with stocks for example, if liquidity is an issue, it's based on supply and demand. If you put a market order in or want to buy at a limit of a certain amount, you need sellers. If I want to invest say $20k at McCain to win for instance at anything below 40% I may bid up to where I have to pay 40% to get someone to sell the contracts to me at 40 i there are no sellers for tha much volume at any price. Make sense?
As to the topic of this post...
This does not surprise me at all. And this is for the basic reason that Minnesota as a whole has a past of reacting, extremely poorly to negative advertising. I had posted previously that for this very reason I had hoped that McCain did not withdraw, because I felt his negative advertising would have an adverse effect upon Coleman.
You would have though Coleman would have learned his lesson in the Coleman/Humphrey/Ventura debacle. But it appears his failure to learn from history is going to cost him a 2nd election against another entertainer (although this entertainer is infinitely more qualified.

They already are and it's backfiring on them horribly.
RE INTRADE "jumps"
Lots of rumors about people blowing huge sums of money to influence the intrade market.
I am almost positive that what is happening is that Intrade is liquidating the contracts held by traders that fail to meet margin calls. That is the only thing that makes sense, and it pretty much explains the movement.

From the Guardian
"Stephen Branchflower, a former prosecutor, found that Palin had breached the Alaska executive branch ethics act, which states that "each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust"."
"Palin will probably not to face impeachment proceedings, with both local Democrats and Republicans saying they have little appetite for such a move.
With McCain struggling to overtake Barack Obama in the pools, however, and less than four weeks before the election, the report's findings could barely have been worse for the Republicans. "
Maybe "Depends on how smart McCain is.." were the wrong words, but...
as things stand now, having her step down (Blaming the evil influence of Obama) to protect her state from the corruption those evil Obama supporters have done to her state, may be the only card McCain really has left.
Isnt Palin's name on all the ballots by now. NO NO NO Its too late.
McCain Denounces Pitchfork-Wavers http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2008/10/mccain_denounces_pitchforkwave.html
Lots of people are commenting saying they think he's just going for deniability, etc. etc. I personally don't care WHY he did it, I'm just glad he did. I would prefer to think that he realized what was happening and where it could lead. I don't want to vote for him, but I'd rather think better of him than what I was thinking.

Bullshit. As a Dodgers fan, kicking the Giants ass feels great even when they suck. In fact, the blow outs are even sweeter. I always think, I should feel sorry for them, but I don't. I love every minute of it. I hope she gets recalled or impeached up there.
Palin talks about Obama having unsavory associations. Well, she is McCain's unsavory association and she has been to way more of his fundraisers!

Utah
Idaho
Wyoming
Nebraska minus Omaha
Oklahoma
Nice one Fred. Very classy.
Jesus. Nuclear? What does McCain have left? Ayers is like the bottom of the barrel.
