Bill Ayers' Wikipedia entry has been accessed between 49,500 and 96,000 times over each of the past five days, as the McCain campaign has sought to stress the linkages between Barack Obama and the former Weather Underground frontman. This is a high figure; Jeremiah Wright, at his peak, was getting about 38,500 hits per day; Obama and McCain themselves are generally in the high five figures or very low six figures. The Obama campaign, for its part, got "Keating Five" up to 84,800 hits on Monday, although those numbers have since leveled off.
It is less clear, however, whether these attacks are having any tangible effects on perceptions of the candidates. Three of the daily tracking polls -- Rasmussen, Hotline, and Research 2000 -- chart the candidates' favorability scores on a daily basis. Let's compare the candidates' ratings on 10/3 -- before the Ayers attacks began -- with those from yesterday, 10/8. (Why yesterday rather than today? Because we don't want to conflate the Ayers impact with that of the presidential debate, which began to be reflected in today's figures).
First, Barack Obama:Pollster Favorable UnfavorableBetween the three pollsters, Obama's favorables decreased by an average of 1.7 points over this window, while his unfavorables increased by 1.3 points. These numbers suggest pehraps some incremental gains for McCain, but are well within the margins of error of the respective polls (the poll with the largest sample size -- Rasmussen -- showed the least effect). By comparison, when the Jeremiah Wright story first broke on March 13, Barack Obama's favorables decreased by about 5 points within the span of a week, and his unfavorables increased by the same margin.
Rasmussen 10/3 57 42
Rasmussen 10/8 56 (-1) 42 (n/c)
Pollster Favorable Unfavorable
Research 2K 10/3 59 32
Research 2K 10/8 57 (-2) 33 (+1)
Pollster Favorable Unfavorable
Hotline 10/3 58 36
Hotline 10/8 56 (-2) 39 (+3)
Pollster Favorable Unfavorable
Average 10/3 58.0 36.7
Average 10/8 56.3 (-1.7) 38.0 (+1.3)
Here is what happened to McCain's own ratings over the same window:Pollster Favorable UnfavorableMcCain's unfavorables increased slightly over this window, by an average of 2 points, although only the Research 2000 result is outside the margin of error. McCain's favorables also increased by an average of 1 point.
Rasmussen 10/3 52 45
Rasmussen 10/8 52 (n/c) 46 (+1)
Pollster Favorable Unfavorable
Research 2K 10/3 41 45
Research 2K 10/8 44 (+3) 49 (+4)
Pollster Favorable Unfavorable
Hotline 10/3 53 40
Hotline 10/8 53 (n/c) 41 (+1)
Pollster Favorable Unfavorable
Average 10/3 48.7 43.3
Average 10/8 49.7 (+1.0) 45.3 (+2.0)
What we also don't know is which types of voters, if any, were swayed by this stuff. When comparing the 10/8 and 10/3 releases of the various tracking polls, Obama lost a net of 5 points in the Hotline poll over this window, and a net of 1 point in Research 2000 and Rasmussen, but gained a net of 4 points in Gallup and a net of 1 point in the Battleground poll, producing an ambiguous overall trend.
If the McCain campaign wants to make any traction here, it will probably need to press the attack continuously, as it has little tangible news value and as interest in these things tends to fade rather quickly.
Obama's best strategy may simply be to appear before a national audience as frequently as possible, as voters have always almost reacted favorably to Obama when he has had such opportunities. Obama's favorables ticked upward in all three trackers in today's release, suggesting that his strong performance in Tuesday night's debate may cancel out or exceed any traction that McCain had been able to make on Ayers. This may also be the impetus behind Obama's decision today to make a 30-minute, prime time ad buy in the week before the election, as candidates have few opportunities to reach a mass audience once the final debate has come and gone. If it so desired, the Obama campaign could probably also drive a decent amount of attention to the Keating Five, as the traffic metrics on the story essentially matched that of Ayers for the 48 hours or so that Chicago was pushing it.

Thank you for this amazing site.. I check it several times a day!
Obama 08
lol..
Do you really know Barack Obama? John McCain and Sarah Palin insist that you don't. You may be shocked to learn that Barack Obama is pallin' around with known gangsters. Have you heard about his ties with this Al Capone character? The truth lies in my blog, Heartless and Brainless.
Fourth!
I'm surprised pollsters haven't asked a direct question on this subject.

Have you noticed that the more times McCain/Palin bring up Ayers the higher the percentage of Obama win senarios on the left of the page. I waiting until it goes up to 100 on Nov. 4.
It keeps getting better and better!!!
Begala just said it well: McCain is losing respect by attacking Obama on Ayers.
They should have done this in August if they wanted this to work. Character attacks are more subtle and work when you try to define someone. Now Obama is neither an unknown quantity nor dangerous and people would see that anyway.
But the time to define your opponent is late august early September.
And like Rove said you have to project a contrast with that weakness. He has neither cemented the charge against Obama nor he has projected any sort of positive contrast to that association.
McC's campaign has been the weakest campaign since Dukakis. Dole doesn't count he was challenging a sitting president.
Yup, those Strategic Vision polls are real.
Does anyone find it strange that the one really good poll for McCain this past week (Indiana 10/7) seemed to be buried by Rasmussen? He slipped it in very quietly two days later with no headlines, no fanfare? You still can't see any sign of it on the front page. I'm not suggesting anything nefarious, but it sure seems...odd.
Nate and/or Sean, please write something about the voter purges in the Swing states. Even if you can't predict the effect it will have, can you at least list the potential EV tallies if all the purging states end up red? What is the EV total for just the safe Dem and likely Dem states?
Maybe I'll be called a troll for being worried, but the voter purging is scary. Voter fraud gave Bush a second term when I, for one, was sure he would lose. I want to be hopeful and I want to be positive that Obama will win so I can sleep better, but vote suppression is not a small thing. They are wiping out thousands of voters.
McCain is Not Racist, as Far as I Know
Checkout my piece on Youth Voter Registration. For every 100 registered voters aged 18-24, the democrats accrue a 9 vote advantage.

Oct 9 Polling Update
Same old crap from the GOP. Too bad for them that this stuff has been tried over and over and largely debunked. Obama and Ayers lived near each other on the south side of chicago. They served on a board? big deal...
By the way, as a Chicago resident I wrote an article at demockracy.com about the Cook County Sheriff that is refusing to evict renters from foreclosed properties:
Chicago Sheriff Refuses to Evict Renters

What's up different Eric? Bottomline, it's clos to envision any reasonable scenario where Obama wins Florida and McCain wins the election. Close to impossible. It would almost certainly require Pennsylvania (not going to happen) and Minnesota or Wisconsin at least. If Obama wins Florida he probably has about a 99.5% chance of winning the election.
There are three big problems with the Ayers gambit.
1. Nasty old grandpa whose kids never come to visit. Voters will view this is desperate attack by a nasty politician who's on the ropes and trying to distract everyone from what we care about. John McCain on the attack is not the fact of a president. He is the face of a sad and desperate old man. The more he does this, the OLDER he looks. In Tuesday's debate, he was 72 years old going on 85. Next week, he will have aged even further.
2. Irrelevant. As of this moment, the stock market's decline is at 1929 levels. Unlike in 1987, it's clear that this isn't a one-time technical shock. Americans are getting worried, and are less and less likely to want to hear about side issues.
3. Complicated. The tag line, which is that Obama is somehow a terrorist, conflicts with favorable impressions that have already taken hold. Therefore, to change anyone's mind you have to lead them through a long story. People don't have the attention span for a long story. They're too busy with their real lives.
Here's what happens... the republican attack dogs keep talking about a story, no matter how many times their claims are refuted. It works. As long as they stick to their story, they sound credible with time. Every day you hear an accusation, the more likely you are to believe it because you heard it before. All the republicans need to do is keep making the same charges. These numbers will probably change, unless the democrats are just as relentless in their defense. Possible, but unlikely. It sickens me, but negativity works.
Ellen, Bush stole the election in Ohio.
Anyone else notice that the only state that Nate has 100% for McCain is Oklahoma? Obama is 100% in 4 and DC.
I think Ayers would have more resonance as a story if he were a black panther, but some professor with a very radical past in the early seventies? Yawn.
I'm one of those thousands of people who accessed Bill Ayers' Wiki entry. I went there specifically to see how they handled his award -- Chicago Citizen of the Year in 1997.
I keep waiting for an Obama ad starring Mayor Daly. He must be shaking his head in disbelief.
Every single swing state according to RCP went for Bush in 2004. Obama is leading or is within the margin of error in most of them. I don't see how McCain pulls this one out short of a MAJOR foreign policy crisis completely changing the game within the next three and a half weeks.
Seconding Ellen's request for a post about the voter purges.
I really enjoy this site... knowing that the data isn't being spun one way or the other is like a breath of fresh air.
Check out the Google Trends page analyzing both terms. Being able to break things down by region is quite helpful -- especially when you see that the District of Columbia, although by far the least populous, ranks high on the state-by-state comparisons. Perhaps there's a Washington bias in any pagecount or search totals...
McCain is doing FAR worse than Kerry. The general polls in 04 had a general consensus of Bush being ahead (from sept-oct) by 1-4 points, with an occasional tie or Kerry+ result thrown in. McCain doesn't even have the occasional tie or McCain+ thrown in. LMAO
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/bush_vs_kerry.html
Focusing on Ayers instead of the economy is GREAT NEWS!!! For John McCain!!!
You mean, if I smear shit all over everything, it makes me stink? Say it ain't so!
The time and focus that McCain spends on Ayers is time and focus that ISN"T spent on making a case for McCain on the economy or heath care, etc...
Once again, short term tactic by McCain, but no long term strategy.
Second point, every time McCain goes over the top Obama rakes in the donations. Now they have the $ to purchase 30 minute blocks of network TV time.
This is the 3rd time this Ayers bullsh*t has been pulled out.
First earlier in the primary season, second as the general was coming on, and now, now.
I now offer my thanks for the Hillary forces having brought this out and tried to sink Obama with it before -- because now it's old, tired, and failed.
I'm not even sure a major foreign policy disaster would turn it to McCain. I guess it depends on what it is, or where it happens, but we've already had the largest U.S. foreign policy disaster in modern history in Iraq, and Americans are sick of the war spending.
I also don't think Americans give a rat's ass anymore about bin Laden. He's like the rabbit on the end of a moving stick, with the tired old American greyhounds chasing it. 9/11 was 7 years ago. Americans have turned "inward." They want immediate solutions to domestic problems like health care and the economy. Chasing bin Laden around the world seems like it's probably far down on the list in this election.
One little thing to help in rebutting some of the Ayers nonsense.
Some of the talking heads complain that Ayers made incendiary remarks about his actions on 9/11. Included in his remarks is something to the effect of "I wish we had done more".
Clearly, by saying that these statements were made on 9/11 indicates that Ayers said what he did in response to the horrid attacks on 9/11.
It's important to remember. The article he made those comments on appeared in the NY times on 9/11. The actual interview was done BEFORE THAT. It was just a sick coincidence that his comments about bombing came on the same day.
Remember to mention that to wingnuts who claim that he made those comments on 9/11
Well, I answered my second question by adding up the EV. If the six purging states plus Missouri go red, then Obama can get 257 (without Florida) or 284 (with Florida).
I still want to see 538 analyze the voter purges. They've provided very thoughtful and reasonable analysis about lots of other factors so far.
The only "gamechanger" left for McCain that's within his control is to have Sarah Palin resign from his ticket. It saves her from a sinking ship (she thinks she'll be back as a credible candidate in 2012 -- yeah, sure), allows him to bring on someone who is competent on the economy (and I don't mean Warren Buffet or Mike Bloomberg), and shake things up once more.
Since the McCain campaign is a tactic in search of a strategy, I suppose this will give him a boost in the polls for about 2 days -- but hey, that's how Steve Schmidt works. Of course, it will sink the McCain campaign, but I predict Mittens Romney will be showing off his gleaming teeth soon.
So, bad news on Troopergate will give McCain and Schmidt their opening.
Just as George Hebert Hoover Bush has been the worst president since Andrew Johnson, Steven Schmidt has run the
WORST. PRESIDENTIAL. CAMPAIGN. EVER
The lack of significant movement from the Ayers Gambit isn't surprising. It seems that the only people who are particularly open to this stupidity are those who were already well on the McCain side.
Let's face it: A very substantial chunk of the voters who embrace this are just happy to have an excuse for why they don't like him that doesn't require them to admit to others -- or themselves -- that their real reasons are racist and xenophonic. (Not all of them, of course -- but it's clear that many fit this description.)
McCain's problem, of course, is that Obama has already been defined in the public eye by now. The convention, the debates, high-profile speeches, and so on -- people already have a "conceptual hook" on which they hang new information.
If a particular accusation doesn't fit on that hook, the individual seriously doubts or outright rejects that charge. Even an uninformed voter, after seeing the first debate, was left with the hook "he looks presidential" -- and accusations of associating with terrorists just don't fit there.
In contrast, if you're a racist uninformed voter, his skin color gives you the hook "he looks dangerous" or "he looks foreign" -- and THAT hook will hold the terrorist meme perfectly well.
The problem, as I mentioned earlier, is that most of these voters already would have voted for a generic Republican over a generic Democrat, so McCain's isn't getting a real boost. Overall, it was a stupid, stupid, stupid play for the McCain campaign to make, and all it does it radicalize their base and further distance him from the rest of the electorate.
You know, the more I think about it, the more McCain is similar to Kerry. Just as Kerry was a "vote for me because I'm not Bush", McCain is a "vote for me because I'm not Obama".
It's too bad for McCain, though. He was a good candidate as far as republicans go. If only he won in 2000 instead of Bush...
Re the voter purges: One good thing is that most of those states have some form of early voting, so if there are widespread problems it should be obvious well before Nov. 4. (I think Ohio doesn't, unfortunately--but at least Ken Blackwell is gone.)
What I want to know is: what the heck is Dick Morris up to?
http://w3.newsmax.com/a/morrismap/?s=al&promo_code=6B10-1
A couple of weeks ago he was one of the last holdouts showing McCain with a lead. Now he has Obama at 386 EV, including states like Kentucky and Tennessee. And Louisiana and Arizona (Arizona!) are toss-ups. What gives?
I'm hoping like hell that the Ayers stuff will have little to no effect, but my faith in the American voting population is, sadly, not high. And I can't say that the favorable/unfavorable numbers here give me a whole lot of comfort. I'm drawing a different conclusion than Nate. Maybe they're just statistical noise - but overall it seems that Obama's favorables decreased SLIGHTLY whilst his unfavorables increased SLIGHTLY. McCain's numbers both increased (by similarly small margins).
This seems to tally with what I vaguely remember about studies on negative tactics - they hurt the person running the ads, but they hurt the target more. If my brain was less like a sieve, I'd remember where I heard that and how to find the studies that proved it. Now, again, these changes could easily just be statistical noise, but it does seem to be systematic across the pollsters. If there is such an effect, I just hope that it's too small to swing the election. If McCain wins on the basis of these tactics, it will be bad for the country. I can handle him winning, but not like this.
Yeah, well that repetitive Republican crap isn't going to fly with a national audience that knows Obama is none of those things or CNN, CBS, New York Times, etc. would have found and published the evidence long ago. The McCain/Palin campaign is like Kath and Kim on NBC, it's only chance of being liked even a little is its on Thursday, however viewers will soon see it for the crap it really is. Just like McCain's desperate attempts to paint Obama as dangerous-pretty funny considering this is coming from a guy who is at least partly responsible for the deaths of over 100 of his fellow airmen because of his reckless flying and flies into a rage when his arm is touched at a craps table-what a pathetic human being-and that's coming from someone who's writing a movie while homeless. On top of this, McCain is lying through his teeth and trying to present himself as Superman who has all the answers-but you have to elect him first. Too bad Barack Obama, the social worker and constitutional scholar, has an ample supply of Kryptonite on hand-and so do his millions of supporters.
CUTTING CONFESSIONS, the fate driven love story of a midwestern man and an abused and artistic Beverly Hills girl-high drama, cutting edge comedy and all the potential for another-but diferent-One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. See the story here:

I heard a radio pundit say that what the negative advertising does the most effectively is it stops people from voting. Even if it coming entirely from one side, when people hear the negative ads relentlessly if feels like both sides are doing it. Many voters then are so turned off by it, they just don't vote.
We jest new that the post-racial lass with the best legs on the planet had to be an Obamamaniacess!
Thirding Ellen's request that you address voter purges. In some swing states, the number of voters purged is substantially greater than the number of new voters added, despite the historic registration drives. At this point, I'm 95% sure that most of the people who show up wanting to vote, and should be eligible to vote, will be backing Obama. I'm about 85% sure that he'll win. In other words, I think it's twice as likely that McCain steals the election through disenfranchisement of legitimate voters as compared to voters actually choosing him.
Glad to see the Republican war on reality is alive and well at Wikipedia. You'd think people had better things to do.
If McCain is down by 5 points and Obama is lean the EC more than 300 EV and McCain win, only fraud and racism can explain that.
Decados ...
he actually was regretting not having done more against the vietnam war, not having done more bombing.
but like many radicals of the 60's, he grew up
Ed Rollins on CNN
It's over, Obama landslide, 10 Senate seat gain possible, McCain needs to worry about his reputation and not hurting the GOP
If McCain can't bring the national poll consensus to a tie after the last debate, this election is over. So by October 20th we should all know who will be the victor, assuming no election stealing takes place.
I absolutely believe that McCain's allies will try to steal this election through voter suppression in minority communities.
When Rasmussen National reaches Obama +10 I'll relax and throw a party (bay area folks welcome!)
(Not to harp on about it but I trust their dem vs. repub sampling model the most)
I thought we might be near a couple of days back but alas....
To be fair, I accessed Bill Ayers' wikipedia page this week, but it was only to get some facts straight in an article I wrote refuting the rumors. I imagine that some not-insignificant percentage of hits might have been similarly intentioned.
I would be interested in a poll of retired people to see if there is a change in opinion after retirement accounts have dropped in recent days.
It does seem strange that McCain thinks Ayers will get much attention when people are worried about the economy. I don't think Bill Ayers is keeping anyone up at night, but many of us worry whether we will still have jobs.
Democratic Party responds to NYT report of purging of voter rolls:
As reported in The Huffington Post

"I would be interested in a poll of retired people to see if there is a change in opinion after retirement accounts have dropped in recent days."
I believe the polling of the last two weeks already reflects that.
"And Louisiana and Arizona (Arizona!) are toss-ups. What gives?"
Quad, its so in a few days Dick Morris can put up the real numbers and say: "Look, the guilt by association attacks are working! McCain is making a comeback."
Oh yeah, Bill Ayers. The winner of the 1997 Chicago Citizen of the Year award.
Must be a pretty scarry terrorist to be celebrated like that.
If Obama is elected, there may be a virtual civil war.
He is the most divisive candidate in our history.
I heard Howard Fineman on Countdown with KO say that the RNC is also going to be "all Ayers" for the foreseeable future. I swear, why do they even bother with pretending something is real? They really could make it easier on themselves and just say Obama was a terrorist the year he was running for Senate. No proof, no nothing. Just rinse and repeat and the MSM will play it all day long for you. That way they wouldn't have to deal with this tricky little thing about Obama being 8 years old at the time of this.
I have complete confidence that the Obama campaign will know how to deal with this each and every day until 11/4 but it really gets tiresome to listen to their lies each and every day.
Perhaps Bill Ayers will have to come on TV with pictures of him with his Republican fellow board members? Geez, before it's over they will be calling Mayor Daley a terrorist too. The fundies are so damn scared of names aren't they. Is it the scary books at church?
Oh look at that Jack said something stupid again. Oh noes we better not vote for the scary black man or else the guy across the street with the McCain sign will come over and cut my throat. Again, people using fear to get what they want. It's despicable. Grow up Jack.
Did anyone else notice Palin's earring on the Newsweek cover? From three feet away, it looks like the Playboy bunny that appears each month on the cover of a different publication. Odd...
Jack, have your finished your homework?
Who is John McCain?
Does John McCain support our troops?
Wasn't there a candidate who said, "I'm a uniter, not a divider."?
Who was that?
The wingnuts noticed the slight trace of a moustache that they didn't airbrush away. It is a huge deal with them.
I didn't even notice it until they started screaming.
jack-be-nimble:
Actually the polling numbers were closer in 2004 and the country was more divided. McCain is the one trying to portray Obama as a terrorist and pump up hate at rallies. If violence occurs, McCain and Palin are the ones to blame. Obama is talking about what really matters.
I wouldn't expect a site like 538 to do a voter purge story. It might be interesting and all but since it is under the table, more or less, it is difficult to quantify. Particularly since the technique has been refined since the last presidential election.
I suppose you could look into the Ohio polls from 04, compare them to the actual votes and work up your own model and go from there. I don't think it would be very accurate but it would be fun to work on.
More telling will be the post analysis on this issue than anything people can calculate before the election.
All this is great news FOR 538.COM

I'll warn everyone in Second Life to watch out for poison gas.
Most divisive? You clearly didn't life through the Bush regime.
Sorry Maddy, it took me this long to realize what you meant by your comment. I go to a very liberal school (Oberlin) so I don't think it's very representative, and I didn't exactly wander up and down the line asking, but that being said, I only know of one person voting for McCain. My set of buses was just the first wave of two, so I'd estimate 800 votes were cast for Obama today. We didn't have class (Yom Kippur) so it was a big vote day. There are only about 2500 Oberlin students total, so don't expect this to keep up to election day, but it is something. And none of us have land lines or local area codes, so I'm not sure how much the polls account for us.
If Obama is elected, there may be a virtual civil war.
I'd prefer a real one where we just salted the earth this time with you guys.
On Survivor just now (California/PDT) an Obama ad, clearly a national, not local, buy.

I replied but all that means is I probably won't be talked to during the holidays ;) Who thinks that this will be anything other than another tired rehash of old accusations long disproven?
A virtual civil war? What's that? Fringe right-wing loonies griping on the internet?
Somehow, I think the country will find a way to move on.
Case,
Thanks for your response. It's fantastic that everyone went to vote together in such a big group. I've never heard of that before.
Hi all,
As an interested(read avid) bystander I have got to say that the hate that is being spouted at McCain/Palin rallies is pretty amazing/scary. They really seem to have allowed the genie out of the bottle on this, their problem I think will be controlling the possible fallout. The base are hurting cause they can see the election slipping away, their right to rule is disappearing before their eyes so their reaction is "slightly" understandable. But the ethics of McCain?Palin feeding this anger/disappointment/resentment needs examination. They have not only lost their moral compass but Palin has crushed it under her stiletto.
It boggles my mind.
Cautiously optimistic and realistically hopeful.
Jack-be-nimble said...

Drop dead you racist fuckwit.
McCain and his surrogates are on an acid-throwing bender. I'm shocked every time I turn on the news. This Hannity bullshit. The Washington Times will report tomorrow that Obama tried to influence the Iraqi government not to accept Bush's proposal on troop movement. It's unbelievable. The allegations are getting to be so preposterous one has got to wonder about the flailing. They translate to this: Obama is evil. Stop him at all costs.
And then, these rallies of McCain's. They're like Klan gatherings. It's unreal. A little terrifying, honestly.
Anyone read the new developing story on drudge? Apparently, according to a Washington Times report to be released on Friday, "Obama secretly tried to sway Iraqi government to ignore Bush deal on keeping troops in Iraq."
I doubt the validity, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Any material impact if true?
Do the wingnuts have an all-caps rule? Or maybe they just don't know how to turn it off?
The WaTimes piece is a rehash of something that was run weeks ago and debunked then, including by the US Amb to Iraq.

I got it too. I will be banished to the kids table for Thanksgiving. When asked "will you please pass the green beans?", I will tell little Ricky: "Ma says you gots to earn 'em yourself."

Thanks, Case. I see I misread the table I looked at earlier. I think this means that of all the states mentioned in today's NYT story about voter purges, the only ones without early voting are Michigan, which isn't looking all that close these days, and Alabama, over which I won't lose much sleep either. So if there are big problems we should know soon.
Well
I fear that the two candidates are in two separate campaign realities. The Republicans are in the reality of Television, newspapers and centralized news of the 70's. The democrats are running the real deal nation wide ground campaign to take the white house - and an internet use the J curve to get the most work out of your volunteers of the 21st century. O - yea and we will run those pesky television ads too – just for fun. Even though they don’t really work any more as Republicans are finding out. The Media environment has been changing for years – Obama is the first one to really take advantage of it.
Hopefully the Republicans never figure this out…
Eric
I think the only rational explanation is that the McCain supporters actually do hate America.
Hey Jack - Why don't you take your civil war up to Chicago? Get on the front lines. Oh, yea, I remember. You're a coward.
I read somewhere that the Secret Service was in fact called about the "kill him" comment from one of the audiences a few days ago. I guess a reporter at the rally heard it and called the S.S. about it. The S.S. said they tried contacting the reporter but had not heard back from him. Not sure how or if it ever got resolved.
They're more similar than that, couchpotato! They're both named John, both are longterm senators, both are boring as hell to listen to, both compensated for being boring as hell to listen to by picking a charismatic and good-looking running mate, both are married to uber-millionaire heiress second wives (although Teresa, unlike Cindy, has brains and wit in addition to moola), both were Vietnam vets who served with distinction, both were successfully smeared to death in a campaign against George Bush...
Gee, this is a fun game!
MWR: That was Dana Milbank who reported that, I believe.
What are the chances that the Obama Campaign starts pushing hard on Palin's AIP connections? There's a good video floating around on the 'net for those who haven't seen it.
Sarah Palin: Palling Around With Secessionists
And here's one just for kicks.
The McCain/Palin Mob
ROFL. I wonder how rich Hannity is getting, feeding the GOP hate junkies their daily fix.
Guy must be worth $50M by now.
Hannity just got his contract reupped.
All we can hope is that the Obama tax restoration for his bracket hits him hard.
I posted this on another thread but it bears repeating--those coming here posting about the Drudge/WT story. This has been around for over a month it was completely debunked by the American Ambassador in Iraq, yes a Republican and by Hagel who was at the meetings and by everyone who was there. So instead of repeating everything that Drudge posts why not do due diligence instead of repeating him? Gosh.
Unjury?
Unjury. I'd like to know what focus group thought that was a good name for a product you ingest! UFB
Probably Steve Schmidt and his gang that can't piss in a urinal.
Speaking of web advertising, every time you click on an ad on this site Nate gets some dough. If you click on the McCain ads, guess who's paying the dough?
So, if you come on here 15-20 times a day, do your civic duty for both Nate and the McCain campaign.
I "de-contribute" at least $5 a day myself. And it all goes to Nate. Thanks John and Sarah.
The Fundie worship of Hannity is disgusting
"Help us O-be-wan Ka-Hannity...you're our only hope..."
Well
i went to a campaign rally for Obama in Dublin, Ohio after the convention speech and his security was very tight. You had the feeling that there asses were so tight that when they sat down there was still air underneath them. But honestly I think security could have been tighter - I was not a fan of him shaking all those hands. Maybe with all these loonies it's time to stop that showmanship.
Politicians want to politic and security wants to keep them in a box. I pray for his safety every day.
Peace
Eric
boulder-liberal, I second that idea, and will welcome Jack-be-feeble to chicago with open, loving arms.
me, and hizzonner da mayor, and Ayers, and the Bears defensive line. (The offense can stay home.)
bring it.
I'd be curious to see the favorability numbers for Sarah Palin.
In my estimation casting her as attack dog is a huge mistake because (a) she is only credible to the republican base; independents and democrats will reflexively discount her message, and those are the people they would like to target; and (b) at this point she needs to look more presidential not less. Every attack she delivers makes the prospect of having her become president become scarier and scarier to many people.
What we are witnessing is not a "legitimate issue being brought to the fore"; we are witnessing the Republican right/religious wing in the process of imploding.
""A virtual civil war? What's that? Fringe right-wing loonies griping on the internet?
Somehow, I think the country will find a way to move on.""
Those of us who hated Bush have managed to survive somehow for 8 years, those who hate Obama will have to suck it up as well.
Even though it may seem so, conservative commentators like Hannity and Rush, and the stations that carry them, may not want McCain to actually win. They will get higher ratings and make more money if McCain loses.
If he were to win, what else would they have to rag on for the next 4-8 years? Themselves? More to complain about when the opposition is in office.
I hope Obama does not use the 30 minute ad time to address this Ayers issue. It's small ball. Spend 30 minutes detailing an economic plan that speaks to people's major concern right now . It's pro active and much more likely to yield results than counter acting GOP mud.
FISH - Lets see just how credible Palin is after tommorow afternoon.
Its like taking the ammunition clip out of their gun.
I just talked to my father. He lives in Virginia, near one of the major military bases there. He was, until recently, voting for McCain. He's switched. He'll vote for Obama. That's a relief for everyone else in my family.
It's plain that, basically, he just doesn't give shit about the fucktarded Ayers crap. He wants his investments back. He wants stability in the markets. And he simply doesn't think McSwitchback can do that for him. If McCain and his haters continue with these hostile and ridiculous attacks, without at least demonstrating that they're capable of sticking to _one-fucking-policy-proposal_ over the course of 24 hours, there is NO WAY they'll ever win my father back.
I suspect my father is also being influenced by some of the marines and military families in the area that are showing some pretty strong support for Obama.
I honestly don't know how much more acerbic the McCain vitriol can get, and I don't know if it will burn Obama at all; but I think it's all empty without some viable alternative. McCain is obviously not that alternative.
Craig Furman said "I hope Obama does not use the 30 minute ad time to address this Ayers issue. It's small ball. Spend 30 minutes detailing an economic plan that speaks to people's major concern right now . It's pro active and much more likely to yield results than counter acting GOP mud."
Craig,
I feel confident that Obama will use his 30 minutes to offer an updated version of FDR's fireside chats. At no time since the Great Depression has it been more necessary to project calm reassurance, and to offer a vision for a brighter economic future.
When Ms. Palin was chosen I remember talking with my family around the dinner table (wife, and daughter, son was busy playing Halo...) We figured that McCain had actually admitted to himself that he had lost, and that this was a way to keep the base and not get totally embarrassed in November. In essence, a way to not get swept, to save some states, like say NC and VA. Umm, well even that has not worked out, but I think this was still the strategy. Not that it seems to be working.... Oh I am Canadian, so viewing this as an outsider.
I hope lots of low-information voters do read the Wikipedia article. It's informative and balanced, and any reasonable person who digests it from beginning to end will see this as the non-issue it is.
Kind of like* how I wished in '04 that every registered voter could have been compelled actually to listen through to all of Kerry's Winter Soldier Senate testimony.
* just on the level of desire for better-informed electorate: I'm not saying I have any of the feelings of admiration for Ayers that listening to Kerry's testimony inspired
Regarding the pending Washington times story. That allegation has already been debunked. Even members of the Bush cabinet who were in the meeting say there is absolutely no merit to the story.
What *is* true is that (AFAIK) is that this stems from an apparent translation issue and some subsequent false reports in the Iraqi media that were then picked up by a writer for the NY Post.
I will try to find the info I have debunking this.
of course it will have "some" effect.
now what the effect is, remains to be seen
So...is McCain's coo-coo crazy base the only people on the planet who don't know that the Ayers thing is a horse so dead that there's no flesh on it left to beat?
Where is the field of rocks that these people have been living under for the past, oh, AT LEAST 2 YEARS?
Senator, people are looking at your ads, looking at their 401Ks and saying WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS CRAZY MAN TALKING ABOUT...AND WHO THE HELL CARES???
WaTimes and Drudge are just trying to preempt the nat'l headlines the Troopergate report will receive tomorrow.
So transparent, the fucking morons.
Gymble:
I have the same fears about the American electorate and the Ayers attacks that you do.
I hope I'm wrong. If we're LUCKY it won't decide things in the end because most of the people "swayed" by this appear to be of the "already decided" type-the ones who have, throughout he campaign, seized on ANY reason to vote McCain, no matter how factually unfounded.
My fear, however, is that there are way to many "undecided" American voters who will take the Ayers attacks, their "black=muslim=terrorist" stupidity and their closet racism into the voting booth, combine it with their lack of any FACTUAL knowledge about or understanding of the issues and vote for "the white guy". This enables them to avoid the cognitive dissonance that you would encounter if you tried to force them to admit they were voting based on race, but would allow these self-identified undecideds to throw things in McCain's direction.
Which is why I still support Obama, but continue to sign as-
Political "betting McCain by 273-279 EV's" cynic.
Boy I hope I'm wrong-but I've just voted too many times in my life for democrats who were destroyed by these kinds of attacks.
Speaking of web advertising, every time you click on an ad on this site Nate gets some dough. If you click on the McCain ads, guess who's paying the dough?
Thanks for that. But I'm not seeing any McCain ads now--just an ad from Obama telling me that early voting has started in Indiana. Pretty good targeting, I guess, but if they were really good they would know that I voted today.
If you are concerned about the Washington Times piece, go here:
Clicky
to get your talking points on.
Unless there is new information this is recycled and debunked.
Furman: I suspect Obama will treat the time like a fireside chat. It's really smart. He needs to reassure the public that a lot of this current economic meltdown is related to confidence; and then he needs to lay out his plan (one more time), about how this can be addressed and reworked. Since he actually has had some of the top economic minds working on this -- I mean, the dude has most of the economic hotshits working on this -- his plan should be pretty solid.
WTG Mark.
Negativity is an interesting thing. Here in Canada the biggest example of a negative ad is Kim Campbell's ad in 1993 basically mocking Jean Chretien's facial paralysis (he had polio as a kid). We here pretty much rejected that, indeed the Progressive Conservative party (yeah I know, that is an oxymoron) ended up with all of 2 seats in a parliament of 301. I am curious as to why it works so well in the US. I am heartened that it is now not seemingly working so well.
Juicy, about Palin's pals
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/10/10/palin_chryson/
Dave,
Palin could have been a good pick, even though she is an idiot. Americans don't mind stupid; we just don't like stupid and mean. When we were introduced to the pitbull for the first time, she didn't seem very likable. In fact, she was nasty. She hasn't done anything in the past month to convince anyone that there is a more compassionate side to her personality.
The McCain campaign really missed an opportunity.
Voter purge comment:
I will be working the election in Cuyahoga County (Cleveland area--major Obama stronghold). Yes, voters MAY have been dropped off the lists given all of the changes the systems have undergone recently (in response to other concerns about voting security--remember the touch screens???)
Voters have been encouraged to check the status of their registration online. They will be receiving voter notices as well.
IF they do not appear in the voter books, or supplemental sheets that list the newest registrations, then--drumroll--we get to the dreaded provisional ballots. On the good side, the voters now get information that allows them to track the status of their votes. Also on the good side, they've addressed the whole provisional voting process that was a huge clusterf@/k in 2004 (seriously, there were about 5 forms that had to be completed or it didn't count . . now it's one that has the basics)
I've got my fingers crossed only because Cuyahoga County wouldn't EVER cross its Democrats. Hell, several of our big Dems were raided by the FBI recently and it hasn't swung anybody to Rep! And, even in 2004, this county was the only one that refused to follow directives from our Sec of State, who tried everything to throw OH to W (obviously other counties weren't as ballsy).
Oh, when polls close, each machine spits out tallies--one of which is posted at the entrance to the polling place. It may not be much, but I'll know the votes at my area by about 8 PM.
The 30 minute add by IS GOOD NEWS!!! for JOHN MCCAIN!!!
quadrivium, you better go check that banner add again. I could swear it says that early voting has begun in Wisconsin!
BTW, LOVE the idea of clicking on McCain ads to make Nate some money out of the McCain coffers. I'm going to do some clicking right now!!!!
Awesome news!!! The McCane campaign has cleared Sarah Palin of all wrongdoin' in Troopergate! WOW! Maybe tomorrow they will declare the economy fixed, too. Problem solved, you betcha. Thanks, creepy old dude!
politicalcynic - WTF? I'm sorry, but that is an astoundingly simplistic (and equally unlikely) read of the election climate. Almost sounds like a McCain campaign memo.
People! The chiaroscuro of Obama's nuanced branding is now on full display. And it's a fucking Rembrandt.
B. Hussein O.---the most ruthlessly pragmatic politician in recent memory---enters the homestretch wearing the mantle of high-minded idealism.
HOW DID HE DO IT?
My god. This man may actually save us after all.
"eve said...
I heard a radio pundit say that what the negative advertising does the most effectively is it stops people from voting. Even if it coming entirely from one side, when people hear the negative ads relentlessly if feels like both sides are doing it. Many voters then are so turned off by it, they just don't vote."
No, what it MAY do is depress Independent voting! It does NOT depress partisan voting and we know that from 2004!
Bush got 94% of Republicans, so they weren't turned off, quite the reverse!
Kerry got 89% of Democrats, so they weren't discouraged from voting, quite the reverse!
And Independents voted for Kerry 47%-46%.
How people view negative ads depends on their political views. Democrats seeing these lying Ayers ads are infuriated and become MORE polarized and determined to vote against the bastard who is running such a scumbag campaign!
Republicans seeing the Ayers ads love them! Finally, McCain is hitting back and pointing out what a lying fraud and wind-bag Obama is! They want to see more of them.
Independents seeing the ads think both campaigns are throwing mud at each other and many might not vote.
So, you see McCain's strategy!
Obama is winning Independents by a wide margin, so if they're turned off by the negative campaign and don't vote, that hurts Obama.
Then he has to hope that, like in 2004, he can whip up partisan fervor and "get our voters to show up" as Bush put it then. Then he might have some hope to win a narrow victory like Bush in 2000.
Everything was going fine. He had all the lies and scurrilous attack ads lined up, but the economy blew up on him, forcing him to talk about ISSUES! and provide SOLUTIONS!
The TWO VERY LAST THINGS McCain wanted to do! His campaign said publicly that the election was "going to be about personalities." They wanted an ISSUE FREE CAMPAIGN focused on the "war hero", "POW" "Maverick" versus the "elitist", "outsider", "dangerous" (read "black").
All code-word racism and winks to stir up an angry "white backlash."
Well they got that all right! But, there are too many Democrats and Independents who are determined to vote, and there aren't enough angry white men to fuel a backlash any more.
They're shouting into an increasingly empty auditorium, trying desperately to take one more curtain call, and refusing to leave the stage. Finally, someone has to take them by the elbow and escort them firmly off the stage.
Reagan Coalition? It's over.
The mood at GOP rallies has changed markedly since the mccain campaign started trying to "turn the page" on saturday
alrming numbers of shouts of traitor, terrorist and criminal being heard when obama is mentioned
could things be set to get really nasty / violent ?
I've written about this on my blog byzantine330.blogspot.com
According to NBC, the McCain campaign has just released a report ahead of the Troopergate report clearing Palin of the charges.
I didnt know you could make your own report about yourself. Man, thats so much easier than getting arrested or going to court.
cugel -
I don't think I've mentioned it before, but I adore your discourses. They suggest a lively and active mind, making me delighted that you exist. <3
@Cugel
In your post you say McCain was a war hero and POW. I didn't know that. In fact, I think I'm pretty well informed but this is the first time I have ever heard this. Amazing.
My friends.
Here in Ohio, nearly all ads are political, overwhelmingly Obama, a few McCain and, recently, unions and 527s. Great one today on the economy being "sound" because "McC said so". The guy points to his beer belly and says "And my belly's gone because I said so", they all laugh and continue pointing to things saying they don't exist because they say so.
Others hitting health care really hard. I swear there's a new one everyday.
I've already voted so, at this point, I just want it over already---and I'm a junkie. I know a whole ton of people who have tuned out completely. Their minds are made up and that's it.

No, they love America. They hate all the people living in it, or at least the born ones.
I think McCain's attacks must be inflaming BHO's fundraising. So sick, he's just throwing money at anything and everything these days.
What is disgusting is that these hateful shout outs from hecklers are just passed by in silence from Palin and McCain.
You can even see McCain grimace distastefully, but take no moment to indicate that that kind of hate is not welcome:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvXf9AUHTqM
That is what is the most shameful, and IMO damning.
Link to the Wash Times story. We'll see how the conservative media takes this:
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/oct/10/obama-sought-to-sway-iraqis-on-bush-deal/
Let's see an distant acquantance with a religious guy and some has been "never convicted" bad guy is worse that a close association with two convicted felons. Take a look at the two principals in McCains first run for office. His father-in-law a convicted felon and Charles Keating who is still in jail.
Why is knowing someone so much worse than those really close relationships?

Because of the tv buy, I feel much more optimistic about seeing Nate's map on election day.
Keating got out of prison after serving 4 years in 1996. He maintains his innocence to this day (he is now 85).
Everyone that's looking that stuff up, whether Keating or Ayers, has already made his mind up, and is arming himself with talking points for the water cooler.
I'm curious:
The projection / trend, how is it calculated?
Is the trend the track of the values reported on the "Popular Vote" pie graph? Is, then, the projection the result of pre-tracking the trend and pre-degrading older polls up into the election?

Please stop linking to the WT.
That story has already been debunked, and you shouldn't be spreading the Moonies' right-wing conspiracy theories.
Sorry your right. They both got out of prison so I guess the association doesn't matter.
enquiring minds want to know...
did donations to Obama in September break $100 Million or not ???
I donated my usual $25/month tithe AGAINST the GOPers in general rather than for Obama specifically
I figure they hold back on the release of the figures as long as possible so as not to slow down the cash flow.
these negative noxious attacks must be driving in new donors & more donations daily, including another $25 from me this week...
I would donate an extra $25/week to help fund a WEEKLY 30 minute national network buy for a 'fireside chat' with Obama & Biden - would you ?

Is there some reason why the media is totally uninterested in MCCAIN'S tenuous ties to terrorism??
Carl Lindner, one of his chief fundraisers, was fined for donating millions to a Columbian terrorist group. This group was and still is actually killing and kidnapping actual people.

Media Curves has polled on the issue of the effectiveness of the Ayers' attacks by Palin. It brings both candidates' favorables down in about equal measure. http://mediacurves.com/Politics/J7042-Palin-on-Bill-Ayers/
Interestingly, Media Curves also polls the effectiveness of an Obama ad tying McCain to Keating - that takes McCain down and lifts Obama. So it seems that Obama has a might effective weapon in response to this nonsense.
The sucky thing about this whole smear campaign is that negative campaigning requires a bit of percolation before its effects are felt. It takes a couple of cycles through my gullible mother's e-mail inbox to go from: "Really, Barack Obama's suit was made out of muslin?" to: "OMG, that Muslim Obama wants to kill everyone wearing a suit!" And by then, that damn human psyche just makes sure that the negative crap outweighs the positive (see prospect theory).
Blogger Interrupted interviews people at a McCain rally. Warning: It won't inspire your confidence in Americans. :(

The thing that has always alarmed me most about the right wing Republican/conservative/FOX News-watching types is how they wear their own IGNORANCE as a badge of honor! I can't get my head around the notion of how unashamed they are of their own ignorance. It used to be that abject stupidity was something to be embarrassed about. Is it somehow now HIP these days to be a total dumbass? Did I miss the memo?
It's even worse when Republican politicians stoop to cultivate the least intelligent amongst us. Why is it that the Republican party seems to consist solely of the top 5% of America's wealth holders and the lower third of the IQ spectrum with NO ONE in between?
It's getting really ugly...take a look at this:
http://ta-nehisicoates.theatlantic.com/
(second and third videos down the page). When I look at Nate's map I feel proud of how willing America is to reinvent itself, but when I see these clips from Appalachia I am so ashamed of my fellow Americans.
just watch RCP
oh whoops, just in time for our arbitrary we can't count "partisan" polls
thusly we can't count the REPUBLICAN POLLSTER STRATEGIC VISION 's new poll showing OBAMA ahead in FLORIDA by 8!
typical
and annoyoing
MARKED
as long as RCP keeps Obama with at least those 277 EVs & ahead in the composite [rigged] national tracker averages, then I can sleep easily
but we know full well that they are leaning heavily toward the right every chance they get
look at the commentary they post & link to on the site - neocons to the front
Xenophobia is Un-American
New Zogby tracking poll:
Obama 47.6
McCain 43.4
The internals of this poll show Obama winning 88% of Dems vs 87% of Reps for McCain. They also have Obama with a 10 point lead with independents.
This means that their party ID weighting for Dems/Reps is probably close to parity.
The true test of right-wing patriotism will be their reaction to President Barack Hussein Obama. If they stand with him, support him, and put their country first, then we'll know that they've really meant all their huffing and puffing about patriotism all these years.
If the right screams and fault-finds and says nonsense garbage like 'you can support the office without supporting the man' and generally act like two year olds throwing a temper tantrum, we'll know that the right cares nothing for patriotism or America; we'll know for certain then that the right craves only power and control.
Call me a cynic, but I'm betting on the latter rather than the former.
I've never seen an example of true patriotism from the right, nor am I likely to ever see such a thing.
that Zogby poll is nothing more than a marketing tool to try to peddle his premium service @ $100
buries the internals - Zogby sucks
doesn't even explain if they call cells or not - I bet not
as for modeling, Zogby says:
"WEIGHTING
Reported frequencies and crosstabs are weighted using the appropriate demographic profile to provide a sample that best represents the targeted population from which the sample is drawn from.
The proportions comprising the demographic profile are compiled from historical exit poll data, census data, and from Zogby International survey data."
as in 'trust me'
I wonder if John McCain will have the courage to bring his shit to Obama's face at the final debate, or if he'll keep playing his little coward game.
Put up or shut up, McCain.
I found this site about three weeks ago and can't stop checking it...every day at work and home. I never dreamed that some day I might be able to really tell my children that they had a chance to be elected as a president of this great country of ours. For my fellow Dems...keep the faith....we will not let this one slip away...not this time!
but guess what ?
RCP trusts Zogby but not R2000 for their poll of polls...
still with rounding, that will be 48-43 which will be O+5 and uptick of +1 from yesterday
so more good news for Barack Hussein Obama !
Amazing, Zogby has weighted dem/repub party ID at parity. Oh, that fair. Zogby's real polls are becoming the same sick joke as his interactive ones.
Didn't Palin say, " There is a special place in hell for bad pollsters". Am I misquoting her? Was that Madeline Albright?
Palin totally killed McCain's campaign in Florida by reminding elderly Jewish voters of the European horrors of the 1930s. Obama will win FL by 4 points. Especially at a time when people between 60 and 65 just saw their retirement accounts evaporate 20% in 2 weeks.
McCain knows it and he's angry. His surrogates know it and they're stuck. Expect to see Rev. Wright on Monday. It's the last card in the deck; unfortunately it also debunks the Muslim smear and they don't have the air power to counter Obama's ad spending.
McCain is running against The Dow, Bush and Palin's hard-core supporters. All before dealing with Obama.
Applying Rasmussen's party ID weighting to Zogby's numbers would increase Obama's lead to about 7.5 points.
FRED
I read that on my Dunkin Donuts mocha latte cup today...
or was that just a smudge from my raspberry jelly munchkin ?
Zogby & Palin go together - both superficial & just plain wrong...
I think that Obama should preempt McCain in the final debate and bring up Ayers BEFORE McCain.
"You practice the politics of personal destruction, and you don't even have the courage to say those despicable lies to my face"
If Obama gets that in before McCain brings it up there is absolutely no way McCain could respond to that or continue to use the personal attacks without looking like even more of a buffoon.

El Cid - "I now offer my thanks for the Hillary forces having brought this out and tried to sink Obama with it before -- because now it's old, tired, and failed."
Yeah, I have no idea why she brought that up. Her husband pardoned a few Weather Underground people, so it just reminds everyone of the Clintons and their pardon buying scheme.
If Obama's election sparks a civil war, then GOOD I say. I know that leftists are supposed to be all nice and tolerant and loving, but do you have any idea how much your willful ignorance, selfishness, and racism has caused people like me simply to hate middle-American rednecks en masse? When Texas secedes, it will be a bright, bright day for America.
While it may be unscientific, the CNN like it/don't like it graph that ran during the debate supports the idea that people aren't digging anything negative, whoever does it. The dials would go down every time someone went there...
Has anyone else seen the 7/11 election poll? You pick which candidate's cup you want when you buy coffee - now THERE's polling done RIGHT! The results are surprising - in fact I wonder what the results of a "latte poll" would actually be. Maybe it would debunk yet another right-wing talking point.
Check it out:

I was one of the people who looked at Ayres' Wikipedia entry in the past five days. Didn't change anything; I liked Obama before and like him still. I don't see a clear connection between them, and anyway, IT HAPPENED FORTY YEARS AGO. Only older people are likely to care about this issue, and most of them are probably voting for McCain anyway.
I was surprised they brought it up on SNL, maybe they thought making a joke out of it would highlight it's ridiculousness? But again, I assume SNL is more liberal than not and wouldn't see them trying to derail Obama.
I was surprised to find that most of the Google searches for Ayres are from Australia/New Zealand.
I'm not sure how Wikipedia volume is really coming from voters in the US.
Nate makes a good point: Obama always comes across favorably when he is in front of a large audience. Which is exactly why he purchased half hour times slots on the Wednesday before the election: http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/obama_campaign_buying_halfhour.php
