Let's compare two commercials. The first is an RNC spot entitled "Chicago Way", which hits Barack Obama on his connections to Tony Rezko, William Ayers and (somewhat oddly) William Daley:
This is a pretty standard negative ad. The message is essentially: "Obama's a little wet behind the ears, he might be corrupt, and he's made some poor judgments in his associates". The ad is straightforward and -- dare I say -- relatively fair. Nothing is taken out of context. In poking fun at the Chicago tradition, it even seems to have a bit of a sense of humor.
By comparison, take a look at "Dangerous" -- the most recent spot put together by the McCain campaign:
This is a much darker ad. The viewer is caught in a matrix-like web of television screens. The colors are washed out. There a sinister (although barely audible) low-pitched hum in the background. The female narrator is humorless, scolding.
It is an ad, in short, designed to engage the viewer on an emotional rather than intellectual level, to play to the subconscious mind. And that carries through to the tagline -- "Who is Barack Obama?" -- a question that the ad addresses only obliquely. What, precisely, is that supposed to mean? Shouldn't the ad be telling us who Barack Obama is, rather than asking our imaginations to run wild?
I am no advertising critic, but the McCain campaign's ads are routinely among the most bizarre that I have ever seen, appearing to originate from a sort of parallel universe in which cartoonish Obama heads float disembodied before sepia-toned backgrounds, in which language is distilled to a technocratic shorthand, in which the line between imagination and reality is blurred. I find them exceptionally disturbing, and that is surely the reaction they are meant to evoke.

Are McCain's Ads "Dangerous"?

Yes, they are.
Check out the picture here I found on the web, circulating with the email ad.

No question but they are dangerous ads, inciting racial hatred intentionally. McCain's campaign chief could not defend this "Dangerous" ad on Fox's Chis Wallace Show this morning.
Screw whether it's "dishonorable" to say we're killing civilians. The fact is that it's TRUE. Is it honorable to lie, John McCain?
McCain's campaign seems to have made a conscious decision to abandon all decency and never look back.
link to mccain ads on youtube is broken
It's weird and kind of hilarious how the music is so sinister throughout the ad... until the end, when McSenile approves the message. Then the music becomes all light and happy, as if to say "Don't worry, McCain will save you from The Scary Black Man."
Isn't there a very scary ad that accuses Obama of bein the anti-Christ? I caught the first ten seconds or so a PA cable outlet.
Good analysis, Nate.
I think the second ad doesn't show TV screens, but a bunch of film negative strips. Like, "look what we've caught him doing? Which should we develop?" That explains the all-caps text in the gutters and the washed out colors.
Cheers,
Peter
Gallup are at the capers. How can Obama have an 11% lead before any people were polled after McCain worst debate performance, yet in the days following, he's gained a point every day since, while Obama has hasn't improved, he's dropped a few points. And now they're going to LV, which shows Obama at the same percenatge, but McCain up a few points. BOLLOCKS.
I've also noticed a change in their language and headlines. a definate pro-McCain slant. A bit like Rasmussen before the market meltdown.
Obama mixed his metaphors, too. The saying is WET behind the ears.
:)
Green behind the ears sounds yucky.
Isn't "green behind the ears" a mixed metaphor? I winced a little when Obama said that in the town hall debate. The expressions are "wet behind the ears" (as in a newborn baby, still wet with amniotic fluid) and "green" (as in a sapling that hasn't yet grown its bark). The only person who could be described as "green behind the ears" is the young Elphaba, who was green everywhere else too.
What I'm finding ever so interesting is the receding importance of T.V. ads in comparison to a strong ground game.
Here's a question for Nate, Sean & all: what is the ratio in terrms of spending between T.V. ads and ground game for both campaigns. Would be very interesting to find out.
Eve beat me to it. :)
porridge,
the poll is what it is.
It's not a Republican pollster, the race is just tightening a little and will probably continue to tighten until election day.
just don't get complacent. This election is far from Over.
Gallup are actually suggesting the presidential race is "tightening".
Based on what, exactly? Their screwy polling that show Obama only leading +7.
These people are crazy!
John "I am completely whacked" Hagee says Obama is NOT the anti-Christ. Well, that proves it, right?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mvFspqtGR4
Completely whacked people. Lets get over this whole "invisible man who impregnates virgins" stuff.
It's entirely possible that the negative ads are actually working which would explain why McCain is making gains.
All this antichrist stuff is terribly disturbing. I watched a movie last night called "mississippi burn" in which a small Mississippi town is beseiged by the FBI from the "commi NY and chigaco" and the "liberal media that hate God" to investigate the dissapearance of 2 Jewish and 1 black civil rights community organizers. (the sherrif and several policemen, all clan members killed them then dumped the bodies) .
The clan leader stood in front of all the people of the town and warned of the "antichrist come from new york to slay our children and tell us our world is wrong " His speach is eerily familiar to the messages in McCain's adds and that is frightening.
Sheesh, im donating 10 bucks to Obama right now.
I do wonder if McCain sees any of these ads before they are released.
It's not that I think he is an honorable guy who would disapprove. He has shown little integrity (or even good sense) in this campaign.
I just think his campaign is so poorly organized and managed, that he may not even always know what is happening.
In the third debate it will be interesting to see if McCain has the balls to repeat what his hate-filled ads have been spewing. Palin has been sayin' that Obama pals around with terrorists, and then McCain is shocked, shocked to hear the SAME words at his campaign rallies.
McCain is in a tight spot. If he is cordial in the third debate to Obama, the crackpots will freakout and yell at McCain the last three weeks of the campaign. If McCain is dumb enough to spew his lame Ayers-ad hate at Obama in a debate, Obama will counterpunch him so hard it will make Obama's "bomb, bomb Iran" counterpunch look timid.McCain had painted himself into a corner.
Having said that, I am hearing rumblings that McCain will announce yet another economic plan tomorrow. This may be his last "Hail Mary" razzle-dazzle of the campaign.
I agree overall, Nate, but let's not bless the first ad (the one by the Republican National Committee). It's rife with half-truths.
This just shows that John Lewis is absolutely right in his warning about the dangerous territory McCain's campaign is entering. His campaign's ads are worse that the RNC ads.
This is no surprise. McCain lost his scruples a long time ago. I can't image what ads they'll run the week before the election.
Who Are the Uighurs, and Why Should You Care?
Obama did not ask to delay security agreement, Iraqi FM says
Link
porridge how is the poll screwy?
No based on his lead going from 11 to 7 in the span of about three days.
That's called tightening.
The fact that Rasmussen and Hotline both show tightening is also pretty conclusive. Am I off?
Yes, and can't be everywhere as President either - that is why running the campaign is so important, it shows how you evaluate people.
McCain's campaign has sucked, Obama's has been great. Who will run the beter administration?
any more polls coming out today ?
but you said it better, josiah
now I have to go google "Elphaba"
I love the new campaign slogan: "Change is coming" where have we heard that one before?
Would love to hear Mccain explain that "fundamental shift" in his "philosophy" without the goddamn word "maverick" coming out of his mouth...how about that John?
aaaaand, crickets.
Any new polls today nate? I'm getting antsy.
Good analysis, except I very much disagree about the first ad. Condemning based on such a passing acquaintance to Ayers is ridiculous. To take that seriously would mean all students Ayers was involved in educating are now suspected terrorists.
A Politico piece by Ben Smith on BHO's AA GOTV contains an interesting bit of trivia: Axelrod has made a career specialty of electing African-American politicians.
Josiah, I have to laugh!
"The only person who could be described as "green behind the ears" is the young Elphaba, who was green everywhere else too."
I've seen Wicked 5 times. I thought I'd read everything here, but a reference to Elphaba just made my day. Hmmmm, McCain reminds me a lot of the Wizard, just before Glinda kicks him out of Oz for good!
People should stop trying to argue about "tightening" of polls from one day's results, or even two or three on a given poll.
There is still something called sampling error involved in all polls, which can make results shift one way or the other by a few points simply by chance.
Chris Cillizza brought this up the other day. That ad is so disjointed. It pivots from an attack on Obama in the first 10 seconds to one on congressional Democrats in the final 20 seconds. Huh? And that more than anything fits in with this alternate universe argument you're going with here, Nate.
This is an excellent ad for McCain. Their campaign's sole purpose has become to instill fear, distrust and outright hatred towards Obama.
This commercial screams at us to 'be afraid, be very afraid!!' and it accurately portrays the current McCain campaign strategy.
This is the only message they have to send and I think the commercial does a good job of sending it.
Rachel,
I don't trust these pollsters even when everything is hunky dory. I'm just scratching my head at how one candidate can be leading by 11% before the other candidate delivers his worst debate performance, yet the candidate declared the overwhelming winner drops a few points in the days after. It doesn't make any sense, just like when Hotline and Zogby inexplicably had it +1 for Obama earlier this week.
I guess the only explanation Gallup are offering is consumer confidence went up a point. But still...
The cliches are "green behind the gills" and "wet behind the ears." I do hope Obama will get them correct. After all, this isn't rocket surgery.
Nothing to fear from these ads. Independents can see through the guilt-by-association thing and are becoming increasingly aware of the nuances of congressional voting for and against war package spending. Obama's quote in the second ad clearly sounds like it is taken out of context and its central argument has lost its purchase since it had effect on Kerry in 2004.
McCain can come back
everything must go wrong for Obama from here
i don't see it happening
22 days to go
debate on the 15 is about the economy
Coming across as disjointed is a good way to convey 'BE SCARED!!!' without having to come up with a cogent argument about what to be scared of.
I don't think McCain keeps track of all the GOP ads. You need to know how to install flash on your pc; or at least how to find You Tube :)
The only thing I can hope about these ridiculous McCain ads is that they don't actually persuade anyone to vote for him. They play upon fear and not reason, emotion and not policy. Who's being dishonorable here?
And speaking of ads, Obama has ads on local channels in......TEXAS.
Why do you think this is? To help dems in Texas races?
"Green behind the ears" isn't a mixed metaphor. It is a malapropism.
Don't play with fire, baby. You'll get the horns.
PorridgeGun -
You are right. For people to suggest that the polls are "tightening" is ridiculous and knows next to little about numbers.
Rasmussen moved 1 point.
Gallup 2 points.
Hotline 1 point.
That is hardly "tightening" of the race. First of all, all of those numbers are within a MOE and therefore creating "noise" more than movement. Second of all, it's the weekend where over the past 3 months Obama has polled lower more times than not with last weekend being an exception.
no he buys had nationwide that are picked up everywhere from Manhattan to Denton
campaign has a lot of money
that's why he is running local ads in TX
Rasmussen does NOT have the race tightening. From the daily tracking poll analysis at http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/daily_presidential_tracking_poll
"The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows Barack Obama attracting 51% of the vote while John McCain earns 45%. This is the seventeenth straight day that Obama’s support has stayed in the very narrow range from 50% to 52% while McCain has been at 44% of 45% (see trends)."
nate, to be fair, you ought to contrast that with some obama ads... and as for the "rezco land deal," that consisted of obama buying a chunk of his next door neighbor (rezco's) yard so his girls could have a larger area to play in.
"seems fair?" not really nate. the so called terrorist ayers was a terrorist if you can even call him that when obama was 8 years old, and in the mean time has become a champion of education and a well respected college professor.
this is america, where people can make a mistake in life, be rehabilitated, and make something of themselves. the assumption that a crime somebody committed 40 years ago should be hung around their neck for life, is something that comes out of authoritarian states, not this one.
so as for the fairness of the republican ads, at best they are lying, but at worst, they are assuming what kind of country this should be, where there are no second chances, and where guilt by association is the law of the land.
That ad is so disjointed. It pivots from an attack on Obama in the first 10 seconds to one on congressional Democrats in the final 20 seconds. Huh?
They have to attack Congressional Democrats because this is partially being paid for by the RNC and they can't use money to attack the presidential candidate. A neat little trick the John "Campaign Finance Reform" McCain is using to take public financing but use the RNC war chest to attack Obama.
HA! I like "rocket surgery". Will have to use that one.
I have found it kinda amusing how John McCain has created and repeatedly used the "Chicago politics" meme in rallies and ads. They must have tried it on some test groups and it scored really well. But I wonder whether it resonates with any swing voters at all.
By the way, down here in Texas the only presidential political TV ads that I see are the national ones televised on cable news networks. Otherwise...nothing. I've always wondered just how important television ads are in today's age anyway.
Also, next time you find yourself at the next McCain rally, bored out of your skull, go ahead and pull out your handy-dandy John McCain Political Rally Bingo Card!

Apparently, according to Nate's numbers, there is a 101% chance that SOMEONE will win CT this year. Cool.
I think Steve Schmidt and all the other idiots that are running this campaign are the biggest bunch of idiots (yay, redundancy!) in the world. They seem to neglect the fact that nobody cares about this stuff right now. It's the economy, stupid. And it's never been MORE the economy. Ads about Bill Ayers and Tony Rezko are not going to help us get out of this crappy economy. So if they want to play this whole game of riling up the base against the terrorist Muslim communist, they can keep right on doing that. I'm happy if they do. But they should know that this is the reason they're losing. They don't speak to any relevant issues at all, and think they can get by on the fact that he's black and McCain's a POW and Sarah Palin's a hockey mom. And you know what, if I end up being wrong and McCain ends up winning, then we're all screwed.
Winston Churchill said that "the best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter," and he is so right. Because the average voter is the people at these Palin rallies calling Obama a terrorist and yelling "kill him!" and things.
So yeah.
Rachel, I've always said Gallup are screwy. When Obama was expected to drop a couple of points, he reached his all-time high (52%-41%). Now, following his best ever debate ratings, including Gallup, he's dropped from 52% to 50%, and McCain is at 43%. Sorry, but it's utterly bonkers to me.
By the way, that typo in the Rasmussen analysis (44% of 45%) has been republished in their report for at least a week straight.
are the polls
44-44 ??
hahahahaha
i think from now on the GOP strategy is not to waste money trying to convert undecideds (GOP knows they have screwed); but invest all their money in a high turnout from their own base. It worked for Bush in 2004, where Kerry got more votes then Gore, but Bush even more.
And McCain is, of course, is very susceptible in re-doing past battles. Though now even conservative pundits are saying it will not work.
I bet even Nate is scratching his head. Afterall, he predicted Obama would continue to make gains going into the weekend.
Thanks Nate. Your "parallel universe" description is very appropriate.
What we have here is an alternative view of reality based on mis-truths and not-so-subtle twisting of facts. The Obama quote about "killing civilians" in Afghanistan is completely out of context from a quote that was about SUPPORTING our troops with the personel they so badly need in that fight. Boots on the ground as opposed to just relying on air power which can cause civilian deaths.
FOX is the worst culprit and FOX viewers are the most mislead.
Consider studies that showed that FOX viewers were the most likely -by wide, weird margins - to still believe that Sadam had attacked us on 9/11. Even AFTER Bush himself had called that connection false!
Now, after falling flat with the Bill Ayers message, we see FOX banging the drum of scapegoating ACORN in an attempt to convince it's viewers that an arm of the Dems (Obama too) is trying to steal the election.
This morning I watched FOX and they were all over the phoney voter registrations that have turned up in certain states. (a vast minority of the overall registrations) Some of those SMALL MINORITY OF REGISTRATIONS were turned in by ACORN workers.
But here is the situation- I'm sure those workers get paid by the registration (maybe $3 per?) and in the waning days of the effort (the closing date was Oct 6 I believe) some overzealous and, yes, fraudulent workers perhaps decided to "pad" their numbers by putting in false names and signing them all.
But there is a distinct difference (and Nate, maybe you can touch on this) between REGITRATION FRAUD and VOTER FRAUD. If some goofball working for ACORN or any other political group turns in a Reg. form with the name "Micky D" and put the address of the local McDonalds that's REG. FRAUD. But unless someone shows up and says my name is Micky D and actually votes then there is no VOTER FRAUD.
Imagine the coordinated effor that would have to be made to match the hundreds of bad Reg's to a voter who would vote under the fictitious name!
Or perhaps that one ACORN worker was going to go vote in 300 different polling places on election day! Unlikely.
This is a FOX straw man to whip up something, anything that will play well for McCain and make Obama look illigitimate. (and make no mistake, it also sets up a basis for making Obama's presidency look illigitimate should he win. Republilcans feel that the White House is there birthright and anyone who sleeps there other than them is to be tarnished at all costs... just look at the eight year smears on Bill Clinton- the most outrageious BS)
Last thing about FOX and voter fraud-- the reporter on the air this morning was waving a handful of bad reg's. And then read an email which made mention of the difference between Reg fraud and Vote fraud... his answer was to just wave the the papers around and say "Here's your proof!"
So he ignored the issue. And stoked the flames.
Obama needs to take into account the cumilative effect of all this nipping at his heals... the death by a thousand cuts which McCain's crew is propagating.
I'd love to see an interview with a very normal looking ACORN member who registered voters. Or a stat that showed the number of ACORN voter reg's that were accepted as perfectly fine.
Countering McCain's campaign at every lying turn is not enough. One must counter FOX (and Lou Dobbs!) as well.
Hopefull the Obama campaign will put out it's rebuttal and the main stream "legitimate" news outlets will investigate fairly.
ACORN could fess up to abuses as well where they find them. That would lend credibility and help the truth telling.
Paul
anyone have any anecdotal evidence as to the early voting in VA or OH. A substantial lead for OBama in early voting in either state could give him the win.
How many positive ads does McCain have out there? Living in the UK its tough to know, but on the web I have only seen maybe his first ad as a positive ad, (fairly standard bio-ad) beyond that all he seems to have are ads attacking Obama. (Not just criticizing him mind, attacking him).
I think there are two reasons why McCain doesn't bring up these things in a debate so far. Firstly he is too galant in a sense, he is not especially comfortable personally with the hatchet politics. I think George H W Bush was much the same, but had better help from the media, and an easier connection between the ads on Dukakis and governing. The second reason is that if he did bring them up and Obama squashed the questions by saying 'I didn't know Ayers that well, and Bill Daley was a cabinet secretary under Bill Clinton, what are you saying there? and didn't you have a pastor at your rally the other day saying that other faiths are praying for me to win, and that christians ought to pray for you to win?' And right there and then the character question would have played out. It helps McCain for the character questions to hang around in the background.
I posted this on the previous thread just as the new thread appeared and we all rushed over here...but it applies even more so now that we see the new depths to which McCain has dived.
> McCain, however, seems set in
> the strategy that got him into
> this position with those same
> ideological groups.
What's the saying, "If you get in bed with the Devil, you'd better be prepared to ****."
McCain hitched his cart to the far right's horse when he picked Palin. He can not change now - all the other horses are long gone. In the words of Shel Silverstein, "Beware of being the roller when there's nothin' left to roll."
> I tend to agree that the country
> will not be served well by a
> collapsed Republican party.
> Perhaps I am a bit of a centrist
> but I do think a weak GOP is a
> bad thing.
The existence (and acceptance) of a "loyal opposition" is one of the most important pillars of a functioning democracy. It forces a modicum of debate and examination of the issues and moderates the decisions. When opposition becomes synonymous with "treason" (as so well-practiced over the past eight years), there is no debate, no moderation, and bad things happen.
Nevertheless, the Republican party has thoroughly disgraced itself and is riven by internal fractures as the traditional conservatives finally wake up to the yahoos and con-men with which they are in bed - see saying above.
After Obama gives them a good thumping on Nov 4, there will some heated back-room discussions at RNC HQ about future of the party. My prediction is that the moderate wing of the party, such as remains, will leave since they don't have the leverage to resume control of the party, even though it clearly has to abandon its more ill-considered policies. The Democratic party, if it can break free of the thrall in which it will hold itself, can rescue those lifeboats full of moderate former Republicans and cement its standing in the American electorate for a generation. If they do not, the lifeboat may come ashore in the land of the Libertarians or perhaps in an entirely unihabited territory to found a new party. At any rate, the remaining Republicans will hold on until they slowly rust away, another failed political party that spent too much time gazing upon its own beauty in the mirror.
McCain on Letterman Thursday...

Also, I find it incredibe that McCain hasn'r dropped below 40%. What has he done this past week to instill confidence in his attributes and abilities, just as a candidate?
Lrtterman's a shitebag. I can't believe he's gonna let this prick come on his show after snubbing him to pull a political stunt.
I've spent far more time studying statistics in the past year than I ever wanted to, and one thing they keep beating into our head is: for the classical statistics interpretation of sampling (like polls), usually you get a confidence interval that is reported as the "margin of error".
Looking at the number is usually a mistake. You should instead look at the range. If the poll is done at the 95% confidence level, then what it means is:
This poll was done using a procedure that, 95 times out of 100, will capture the true value within the range from the number + or - the margin of error. We have no information as to whether this poll is one of the 19 out of 20 that landed somewhere in the neighborhood, or whether this is one of the 5% that is off by more than the margin of error.
...So, the sheer amount of random noise that appears in these polls is much higher than most people realize. Looking at the movement of a couple day's worth of any given poll doesn't tell you anything. And it's not even easy to use multiple polls, since their methods are pretty different.
My conclusion: keep an eye on the "super tracker".
It's no more dangerous than the famous LBJ Flower Girl advert. Sure it is nasty fear mongering, but it is nothing out of the ordinary.

I would call Obama's TX ads a shrewd move for the future. Based on what we're seeing this cycle (and banking on a moderately successful first term) I would say the dems are gearing up to take this thing ala 1984 in 2012. Everyone knows TX is out of the question this year but Obama's central campaign tactic of being more open ideologically could draw a lot of young voters who, by 2012, could be sufficiently numerous to turn the whole south blue.

The trooper report came out... Maybe that helped establish McCain as a sane human being. Well I want to know WHO IS TODD PALIN? Obviously these two ran Alaska like their family business so I guess I'm not wrong in assuming that they'll do the same if elected. I wish Obama campaign put the question out; WHO THE HECK IS THIS TODD PALIN CHARACTER?
Simon says:
"Winston Churchill said that "the best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter," and he is so right. Because the average voter is the people at these Palin rallies calling Obama a terrorist and yelling "kill him!" and things."
Funny, but sadly true. Churchill also said "Democracy is the worst form of government... except for all the others." (Oh, to have Winnie's wit!)
McCain will hit his stride this week after David Duke rescinds his endorsement of Ron Paul in an uplifting press conference reminding us all that this election is far too important to risk the virginity of our daughters by electing a Heinz57. Who really knows what this Osama person could be capable of? McCain with his sense of duty and an ingrained love of younger white women along with the wisdom of his years understands the honor of protecting our womenfolk. He knows the national maidenhead must be healed at all costs.
A sudden rediscovery of the family values of our pre-confederate heritage is GREAT NEWS!! For John McCain!!!
They include Rezko in the list of uncrupplious people Obama has been connected to, but Rezko also contributed the maximum allowed to Bush/Cheney in 2004, which shouldn't surprise anyone. That is how they operate. They contribue to both parties and even both canddiates in a particular race, so they have their based covered. Whoever wins, they wfeel will "owe" them.
My conclusion: keep an eye on the "super tracker".
Exactly. I'm mildly amused to see people panicking because Obama has dropped from a 7.6 to a 7.3 average on RCP.
Oh No! Obama is only 7.3 points ahead!!
Chill everyone:-)
Is Gramps needing a change? lol. that ending is bizarre. "change is coming"
One thing else about McCain's ads -- although this has been noted before -- is they are frequently baseless.
Consider the context of the excerpt quoted in the second ad on your post:
"Now you have narco drug lords who are helping to finance the Taliban," Obama said, "so we've got to get the job done there [in Afghanistan], and that requires us to have enough troops that we are not just air raiding villages, and killing civilians, which is causing enormous problems there."
See http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/03/say-it-aint-so-sarah-pali_n_131841.html for a full article and several links adding further support to the truth.
I think that one of the problems with these ads is that there is a generation of American voters who has grown up not just with the media, but with self-referential media.
Who reading this remembers "Homer Badman", where a clip of Homer reaching for the Gummy Venus de Milo is manipulated by "Rock Bottom" to look like he is grabbing the girl's ass? The satire on that was already well known almost 15 years ago.
Maybe the electorate isn't getting too smart, but they are getting a bit more used to tricks.
I live in Denver, and we are getting pounded with these political ads, right now ESPECIALLY the 'Dangerous' ad. Some friends from Texas are visiting, and were watching the local news, and all but one commercial for 1/2 hour show was a political ad, including the 'dangerous' ad which ran 4 times in 15 minutes. It's been thick like this with McCain ads since before the conventions. We all just tune them out now.
The election is over and I don't care what polls say.
These ads don't change anything. Obama won the election on the night of the first debate, and I think McCain's people realize that.
McCain could still win Florida: GOP Congressman
I don't see how that's news. It's like a Democrat from Utah saying they could still win. It doesn't matter what they say - it ain't gonna happen.

I don't think people, meaning Obama supporters, are panicking because he's dropped from a 7.6 to a 7.3 average. I think they're pissed off at some of the idiots out there who are being polled, or at the volatility of the polls that indicate the race is solidying with a double digit lead for Obama, yet he gets pulled back to 6-7%. Usually, for no apparent reason.
If you want to delve deeper, they're probably pissed off at the soft-headedness of people who are easily mislead by the smear campaign being co-ordinated by the Republicans and the right-wing media against Obama and his family.
In spite of all the negative adds, I believe the American people have made up their minds. They have seen a calm deliberate Obama (who's race no longer scares anybody, if it ever did)and a angry podium stalking McCain. You see a young energetic man standing next to an old red in the face individual who keeps wandering about the stage while the other guy talks and the difference between the two is clear. McCain can no longer win this election. Obama or circumstances beyond his control can lose it. Not likely to happen.
Polls - BMCWorld Citizen, we have the lead, let's hope we get Obama!

Top McCain adviser insults supporters: We’re not responsible for the ‘occasional nut.’
“I think there have been quite a few reporters recently,” said Mr. McCain’s closest adviser, Mark Salter, “who have sort of implied, or made more than implications, that somehow we’re responsible for the occasional nut who shows up and yells something about Barack Obama.”

Trout Chevy brought up an interesting point about the Palin's running Alaska like they ran their business.
I had never thought of this before but I have twice worked at companies that were run by married couples and they were the worst two jobs I've ever had because the owners in both cases were complete control freaks, trusted nobody and would screw you over with a smile on their face.
Eric, why do you always call Obama "OBama"?
How weird would it be for one of those national highly paid "reporters" or "journalists" to actually write an accurate story about ACORN and alleged registration fraud versus no evidence of voter fraud. And how they are not the same. (Well, they are the same like day and night are both times in the day.)
I don't think it would ever really happen that one of them could have the issue aired in the AP. That would be too...what would you say, "informative"??
Real Joe,
Bad move by Salter. Because the "occasional nut" is McCain's base. Apparently they are now trying to lose by as much as possible. Palin already screwed them with the Indies, now he's trying to undo whatever gains she brought him among the base. Good move.
@Hank: I agree that there needs to be a "loyal opposition," or at least an opposition that poses a plausible threat of displacing the ruling party, if there is to be accountability.
The GOP strategy on this now seems to be to argue for divided government, which is tantamount to conceding that they're not going to win the presidency. But the way the opposition has operated the last several years within Congress has also been destructive of accountability --i.e., if the only thing the opposition does it to block action, or to oppose compromise, then things don't work very well.
Nonetheless, a fragmented opposition is potentially a bad thing over the longer term.
any state numbers coming out ?
The recent McCain ads and in fact the entire campaign has turned very '1984'.
The masses at the rallies are screaming at their Goldberg figure (Obama), the ads have baseless but ominous accusations and the GOP base don't have a plan on how they would change the government if McCain was elected.
This is probably the strangest campaign of my lifetime
(CNN) – Pennsylvania may be slipping from John McCain’s grasp, but the Republican nominee is keeping the race close in the neighboring battleground state of Ohio – a state that no successful GOP presidential contender has failed to win.
"Successful" is the key word there. Lots of unsuccessful douches have failed to win Ohio on their way back to obscurity. The MSM is grasping at anything to try to make this look like a real horse race. Their jobs depend on it. They look over their shoulders and see these young pipsqueaks from 538 eating their lunch, and they should be afraid.
@Tyson: it's probably the strangest campaign of my lifetime, too, but not necessarily the strangest election when I reflect on the ups-and-downs of 1968. Assassinations, crazy goings-on at the DNC in Chicago, the election of Richard Nixon.
YES, the McCain ads are dangerous, as is everthing surrounding his campaign. Even conservatives are unnerved.
But when you have the "librul media" (aka "John McCain's Base") muddying the waters, you can basically get away with just about everything, including race-baiting:

Sorry to have to correct you regarding your view that the McCain ad you cited was "straightforward" and "relatively fair." William Daley, revealed in the McCain to be a "Political Boss," is the 7th child of the legendary Richard J. Daley, and the brother of Chicacgo's current Mayor, Richard J. Daley, Jr. If anyone is the "political boss" around town, that would be our beloved dictator, Richard J. Daley, Jr. Why did the McCain fact-twisters chose Bill Daley for their commercial? "These ads don't change anything. Obama won the election on the night of the first debate, and I think McCain's people realize that."
Correct. McCain's campaign tactics over the last week are proof positive that his people know that the election has entered a new phase where simply winning undecideds will not win the election. Obama is over 50%, both nationally and in the important battleground states, and McCain must now persuade voters who have decided on Obama to CHANGE THEIR MINDS. Thus they've gone negative, even at the risk of alienating moderates and undecideds.
About the polling fluctuations: Pay attention to what the media covers during the seven day news cycle. The lead story Monday through Friday has tended to be (in a nutshell) "Oh my God the Economy is Tanking!" - which spikes Obama's polling numbers by Friday. While on Saturday and Sunday when the markets are closed, the lead story tends to be "Oh my God, Barack Obama is Black!" which leads to a small McCain uptick.

McCain to appear at Letterman's Late Show?
I hope it would be on the segment "Stupid Human Tricks".
I had been a Letterman fan for decades and inspite of his supposed C student category that did not qualify him for a "supposedly" high rated college, I personally think he is a genius and one of a kind. Quick and sharp on his unscripted jokes, he has a style unmatched by other contemporary late night show hosts and personalities. His NBC competition is no match, however, NBC can stack up high end guests every night to bolster their audience ratings.
If it were true that McCain is going back to the show, I hope and I am sure that Dave would stick it to him real hard. Like:
“What are you going to do if you’re elected and things get tough? Suspend being president?
The McCain ad editing team has found the perfect way to discolor Obama's face and turn his brown skin into this undead-looking alien lifeform skin. It is really remarkable.

I only caught snippets here and there, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't discussed on ANY of the Sunday bobblehead shows. It's just disgraceful. Obama/Biden need to make it an issue, because the MSM certainly won't.
Another piece of McCain Media propaganda, or bad reporting that benefits Mooseburger, courtesy of CNN:
PHILADELPHIA (CNN) – Although thousands of Philadelphia Flyers fans cheered and clapped as Sarah Palin took to the ice at the Wachovia Center on Saturday night to drop the ceremonial puck kicking off this town's NHL season, their warm reception was no match for the 90 seconds of sustained booing that rumbled through the arena, drowning out most of the cheers in support of the Republican vice presidential nominee.
So, like 10 people booed really loudly, and that drowned out thousands of people cheering? WTF?!?
A google search of 'green behind the ears' shows that the phrase had some traction with English-speakers, even before Obama said it at the 2nd debate. It seems that this particular 'erroneous' mixing of metaphors had not only occurred before, but had been repeated often, so that it already had a moderate amount of 'currency' among English-speakers.
Happens often enough in language, where it's the context and intention of the speaker that counts: If your meaning/intention is clear and the new expression you've used has a nice ring to it, then like a catchy song, it'll stick in people's heads.
I suppose you could argue Obama's error shows that he's an inspirational creative/orator type, rather than a 'stickler' policy wonk type (Hillary Clinton, Al Gore), but on the other hand, he did graduate magna cum laude from Harvard Law. And if you'll suspend disbelief for a moment: mixing metaphors does bringing 'change' to the tired old divisions within natural language, as Obama intends to do for tired old divisions in Washington... hmm, not bad.

The ads are inflammatory and designed to play on people's fears rather than address the issues. They are similar to the 'daisy' ad back in the sixties (there are several versions on utube: some which are edited to include Obama and Clinton in the dialogue).
For Palin to continue to utter Obama and terrorist (referring to Ayers in a guilt by association tact) in the same sentence she is fanning the fears from 9/11. That's a campaign of desperation.

I have a theological backgroound. I attended Union Seminary in NYC when Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Tillich were still holding forth. I have since rejected all religion up to and including the suppositions of Jung and Joseph Campbell. The use of religion in this campaign is execrable.
John Lewis, with whom I demonstrated in Nashville in 1961, was dead right to challenge McCain. Barack was dead right not to back down.
This issue is surfacing now and the challenge now is to simply say NO to its dysfunctional and violent premises. We should give the McCain effort no quarter. Now should we exonerate the media who in the name of balance spew forth this hateful trash.

How about this ad the week before the election with a female narrator in a very worried voice.
"Can America Afford a Shrinking President?! The American Medican Journal stated that "People typically lose about 1 cm (0.4 inches) every 10 years after age 40. Height loss is even greater after 70 years old. In total, you may lose 1 to 3 inches in height as you age."
Besides height, what else will John McCain shrink on? Shrinking is not the change we need!" I'm Barack's older brother and I approve this message."
If Obama doesn't want to take it (c'mon Barack!:) maybe S&L will do something about his height. Damn, I met the guy before he ran in 2000 and he was very short then. We gotta use all the tools in the toolbox people! :)
Firstly, while McCain is not racist, last weeks message was one of fear, ignorance, racism and hate. Of course the media says nothing because that would be rendering judgment and they have to remain "Fair." Bullshit, do your f@#king job and call a spade a spade. Bill Clinton isn't a racist either but he did in fact play racial politics in the primaries, there is a difference.
Second, Gallup is a ridiculous poll. Obama has a 5-8 point lead, not 11 points. Most of the time it's bouncing around like a yo-yo. 7 points is better. Gallup is also releasing two sets of numbers when they shift to likely voters, what the f@#k? They don't have the guts to predict a turnout scenario and live with the results like everyone else? Totally disgusted with Gallup. The R2000 tracker poll is more stable, with internals, it's just tilted DEM by 3-4 points. Gallup sucks.
Finally, Obama is playing very safe. He has not stated how he would go about fixing the economic mess, he's demagoging the issue. His stump speeches are a whole lot of flair and saying he's going to fix the economy without mentioning how he's going to do it. The reason Obama does so well in the debates is his rational approach to solving problems comes through when talking to voters. He needs to mix in some town-hall style events with the rallies on the teleprompter. More substance.

Thanks for your research on how Obama's "Green Behind the Ears" comment isn't necessarily a mistake.
But you seem to imply that language evolves. HERETIC! Language evolution is just a theory with no scientific basis! Don't you know langauge was intelligently designed and never changes?!?!
Thanks for the new clips, checking in today. I try to watch CNN because I was told they aren't as openly biased, but everything there does not seem to be actual news, why aren't they pointing out the lack of leadership on the McLame/Paliar side? I am a first time voter, in Orlando Fl, who is Hispanic and married to a black man-we have children. Needless to say this race is starting to get personal.
Let's get some facts straight.
The RNC cannot replace McCain or Palin except because of death or volumtary withdrawal.
McCain cannot replace Palin unless she agrees to withdraw.
If McCain were to withdraw, his replacement would be chosen by the RNC. Palin would not automatically rise to the position.
And McCain and Palin are the names that in any case would remain on most ballots across the country.
To add to my comment - McCain would not replace Palin if she withdrew. The RNC likely would confirm his choice (well maybe not Lieberman), but it would be their decision ultimately.
McCain's attack ads are pure trash. McCain has so much more in his own closet. Part of me would like Obama to hit back hard on McCain's own ties (like those to Neo-Nazis) but that would be sinking to his level.
Maybe if he could do it in a way like this "OK, you make this argument, but using your logic I could just as easily say ...."

Four states have been on the winning side of the past five elections.
The only state considered a battle ground/swing state is Ohio.
Ohio (20)
Louisiana (9)
Kentucky (8)
Tennessee (11)
Which state, if any will remain on the winning side of the presidential election?
Based upon past history, the true battle ground state for this election in Ohio.
I happened to watch "Good Night and Good Luck" last night, the George Clooney film about Edward R. Murrow. They included archival footage of Joe McCarthy, including his rebuttal to Murrow's attack on "See It Know". Marquette University includes in its McCarthy archives some audio excerpts, while UC Berkeley holds a transcript of the See It Know speech. I have linked the Marquette audio here.

That is hardly "tightening" of the race.
I agree.
What's more the R2000 and Zogby polls slightly increased Obama's leads, though I understand they won't be weighted as heavily as Ras and Gallup.
Furthermore, there's been a tendency for Obama's lead to shrink on weekends. I know this is supposed to be accounted for, just sayin'.
As far as the ads, I don't think it's fair to claim that Obama launched his career in politics at the home of Bill Ayers.
In fact it was one of a series of coffees to stir up interest in Barack as a candidate. I've read that no more than a dozen people were present at the Ayers coffee, and Team O is out with an ad saying his carrer was launched at a Ramada Inn.
It's no fairer than saying Obama voted to cut off funding for the troops, because it's meant to mislead rather than inform.
I'm not saying Obama's ads are all fair either. They are not.

I can't be the only Obama supporter who still worries about Clinton sabotage efforts. I'm just glad it's PA today where she can do little harm. I'm glad to hear that's your perception. If I'm paranoid, so much the better. This has been a pet peeve of mine for quite a while. I've contended for months that the greatest obstacle to Obama's election is the machinations of the Clintons. If it's true that no one else gets the vibe I do, that means she is not having the effect I fear, and that is good news for all of us.
Hilary: "Obama & Joe are not asking you to marry them"
Hahahahahaha
Joe just gave Hillary a creepy hug and asked "Inn't she great?" in an almost drunk voice. Oh oh.
Matt, why do you think McCain isn't a racist? And besides, that's kind of irrelevant. I understand that Senator Fullbright of Arkansas privately was strongly in support of the civil rights laws in the 60s, but he voted against them all. So his private anti-racism had no effect on the conduct of governmental business, whereas his public pandering to racism was evident to all. McCain's private behavior includes the adoption of a Bangladeshi child, but he represents a party that has long since taken over from the Dixiecrats in effectively disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of black voters; he was opposed to a national holiday for Martin Luther King, Jr.; and he has run the most racist campaign since at least 1988 and probably quite a bit earlier. Whatever his private opinions and actions (and I don't think we really know what his private attitudes toward African-Americans are), he is effectively a racist, considering only his public behavior. So I would like it if people would stop saying that McCain is not a racist.

Joe just set himself up to be clipped for Hilary's '12 run. I am not sure what that marry them statement meant-we don't have to find them sexually attractive, we just have to vote them in office?
@Correa Jones - He was still talking about Hillary so he could ZING Palin's "abuse of power" without mentioning her.
@Michael - The McCain's adoption of a child of color is a demonstration of WMB - white man's burden. The McCain's superiority (and wealth) placed a burden on them to do something for the "litte people." Bottom line -- it's both colonial and racist. And you're hearing this from a 63 year old white lawyer in Malibu.
The way I see it is this. This hatred has always existed. I've seen it on right wing web sites like Humanevents.com for months now. Ever since Obama started to pull ahead sites such as these and the columnists like Ann Coulter, Buchannen, Ted Nugent, Chuck Norris, Jeb Babbin and the rest of the hate mongers have all contributed to this frenzy of Obama's un-Americaness.
If you want to see true racism, go to an Ann Coulter article on humanevents.com. Her last three articles posted there are "Pull the Hair Plug on this Guy", "Biden Secret Service Code Name:'Assassination Insurance'" and "They Gave your Mortgage to a Less Qualified Minority."
The posters on these types of threads spread these ridiculous about Obama being a mustlum, the anti christ and all the other rediculous crap you are now seeing at McCain/Palin rallies.
What I'm getting at is by McCain and Palin addressing Obama's not being one of "us" in their speeches and commercials they have given the go for these people to crawl out of their caves and come to rallies and express their disgusting selves and viewpoints.
The new "approved by" tagline thats required is doing its job this cycle. McCain can't put out ads like this without consequence on himself. I think the polls show this.
McCain’s Orwellian Vision
McCain’s ads are meant to conjure up a left wing, socialist order under Obama that is greatly different than the lives we have been leading. They are meant to warn of us of a dark, Orwellian future that Obama will bring.
Obama has brought this upon himself. He has obvious sympathy for socialist thinking and his approach to tax and spending policy is as extreme ideologically as we have seen since George McGovern. You couple this with a campaign that embraces Marxist trade dress in order to subliminally appeal to the left wing base and you have the beginnings of an audience conditioned to think of Obama as “other” and “unknown”.
I think the ads are visceral and for the twenty percent of the electorate that is either undecided or only lightly moored to either candidate, they can have great impact.
Obama has reacted strongly to the character attacks that have been visited upon him. But they might have been better served to have remained silent instead of hastily dropping the race card and risking offending the plurality of voters who are white.
I wonder if the McCain character attacks were not a feint to draw Obama out of his crouch, forcing him to react and perhaps make a mistake. Obama risks appearing like a shakedown artist in the vein of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton who browbeat and extorted their opposition to buy their silence, shouting them down and relying on the media to serve as their “Amen” chorus.
Obama has now hit the ball into McCain’s court and it is his point to control. McCain has been benefited from Obama’s apparent gratuitous racial attack on him just at the moment while McCain was being widely hailed for having taken the initiative to silence his crowds and lecture them on the need to be respectful. His indignation on behalf of his campaign and mildly disaffected electorate could benefit him in the polls if he handles it correctly.
McCain must resist the temptation to play to the anti-Obama base in the party. He already has them. Instead, while continuing to hit Obama hard on the character and biography issues (which he can do most effectively through Palin, surrogates and paid media), he must be the ostensible racial healer, portrayed as the candidate seeking to heal the racial divide and not exploit it. Along the way he can explain why honest thought debate and criticism with and of Obama is not racism and those who would suggest it is are trying to cower us into silence and Americans never let their voices be stilled by those who would oppose them.
Thanks for clarifying, I caught it while typing how he brought the subject up. Trying to get the hang of listening and writing down at the same time. I fail miserably at the debates cause I spend the entire time hitting refresh and forgetting to get my cents (sense?) in.
@Liberal-Defender. I agree with you.
"Not one of us" was the code in the Harold Ford Senate campaign for "he's black!" The despicable Rethuglican ads in that campaign ended with "He's just not right." Which was code for "He's just not white."
And, by the way, did you know that McCain was a POW?

Rudy - you have me confused. One of the ads is a smear against Obama by the RNC and the other is a smear against Obama by the McCain campaign. I'm not sure what you were saying. (?)
Biden; "You can't call yourselve a Maverick when all you've been for the last 8 years is a sidekick."
Biden is now belittling McCain as a "sidekick." The Obama campaign has discipline -- tie McCain to Bush. Do it where it counts -- in a state where there is a fight being put up by McCain.
And, erratic. Which by the way, is code for "senile" or "infirm" or at least "old," which is what animated McCain to start to wallow in the raw sewage of his campaign and unleash the bitch (with lipstick) from hell.
I think the Republicans have been playing pretty much the same game for 60 years now (at least). In his first House Race, Nixon attacked his Democratic Opponent as a 'red'. McCarthy simply took on a line of attack and became the eponymous hero of a style of politics. Ike didn't need to slam his opponent in the same way other Republicans have since, but JFK's catholicism was attacked, McGovern, Carter, Mondale and Dukakis all attacked as too liberal and unAmerican. Odd that Clinton, perhaps the least 'worthy' candidate was the one not to succumb to the character attacks, but Gore was apparently a twister of the truth and Kerry was a flip flopper who lied about his military record. Personal attacks and character assasination has long been the GOP way, its kind of sad that they choose not to even attempt policy discussions sometimes.
Its even sadder that McCain, so hurt by the attacks of the Bush machine in 2000, should resort to attacks himself, or at least have attacks undertaken in his name.
Joe Biden is ON FIRE!! I've NEVER seen him speak so passionately. check it out on your Cspan channel. Unbelievable. Some of the same words but a lot new including talking about abuse of power. Not talking about Sarah directly but the inference which is the best way to approach it IMHO. Awesome.
Interesting Troopergate news - that state personnel board, full of Palin appointees, who is also investigating? Turns out it might not turn out the way Palin and her McCain handlers wanted:
Per Michael Isikoff, Newsweek -
But the board ended up hiring an aggressive Anchorage trial lawyer, Timothy Petumenos, as an independent counsel. McCain aides were chagrined to discover that Petumenos was a Democrat who had contributed to Palin's 2006 opponent for governor, Tony Knowles. Palin is now scheduled to be questioned next week, and the counsel's report could be released soon after. "We took a gamble when we went to the personnel board," said a McCain aide who asked not to be identified discussing strategy. While the McCain camp still insists Palin "has nothing to hide," it acknowledges a critical finding by Petumenos would be even harder to dismiss
I DON'T know if this report is required to come out before the election; if Palin gets to approve its release; if the board is required to release it. But it seems like yet another group with a GOP majority wants to play by the rules.

correa,

STepper, I'm sorry, but it's absurd to conclude that adopting a child of color is ipso facto racist. You could be right in McCain's case, or perhaps not, and the fact is, many bigots distinguish between whomever they adopt and other members of groups they are prejudiced against, while others don't consider people from the Indian Subcontinent to be the same as Africans or African-Americans and can be bigoted against one group and not the other.
But my main point is that McCain's private behavior, whatever it's motivated by, is irrelevant to a judgment that his public behavior is racist - and therefore, he is effectively a racist in the public sphere.
As outrageous as it is these negative ads works, specially those that goes to the subconsciencious level. The race will tighten and Obama needs a large turnout comes election day. Bying prime time TV ad was a clever move to motivates his supporters and to show a presidential posture.

any state polls coming out today ?
@Michael
This statement you posted is Palinese:
"But my main point is that McCain's private behavior, whatever it's motivated by, is irrelevant to a judgment that his public behavior is racist - and therefore, he is effectively a racist in the public sphere."
I have no idea what you mean. But it is clear to me that the McCains (that includes the beloved, angelic Cindy, daughter of a gangster) feel that White Man's Burden compelled them to adopy a child of color. You can draw from that what you will.
And McCain, by hiring the very people who slandered him in 2000, has demonstrated better than I, that he "gets it." He'll do anything to win, Even allow those who belittled his adopted child of color. You don't get it?
I just wanted to weigh in on the metaphor "green behind your ears". It is actually the literal german translation of the metaphor that means wet behind your ears in english. I don't know why Obama said it like this though. Maybe he knows some german :-)

Adam Putnam has no relevance. A young pol from a battleground state is required to sput like that. He's not impressive either.
@ Luis,
Agreed! The race will tighten as a natural course of action and excluding any additional missteps by McCain/Palin.
He (Obama) has to continue to campaign like it's the fourth quarter of a game. Up by 10, and ten minutes left to go.
