St. Paul: Wednesday Night Liveblog

8:04 CDT: [Sean] Michael Steele: "Drill, baby, drill, and drill now!"

8:03 CDT: [Nate] Chuck Todd says that Palin's speech is going to be "longer than anyone expected". They're definitely not following my less-is-more philosophy; I think she can accomplish what she needs to in about 15-20 minutes, and that if the speech is 30 minutes long instead, she's more likely to run herself into some trouble.

7:57 CDT: [Sean] Michael Steele: "Are you ready to party in this house tonight?"

7:55 CDT: [Nate] A friend says: "from watching this convention, you almost wouldn't realize that the Republicans had been in power for the past eight years".

7:45 CDT: [Sean] Joe Klein wrote today about the McCain campaign’s war against the press. Steve Schmidt’s war has picked up in the Xcel Center press filing area among furious Republican bloggers as well. Nate noted during last week’s liveblog that he found the cheering in the Big Tent off-putting, but this is equally bad. Citing the RedState and Townhall pushback against the media and the terrible reign of “liberal bloggers,” Sean Hackbarth, the Online Specialist for the Senate Republican Conference, told a sympathetic fellow Republican friend from Wisconsin in the seat next to me, “The Democratic talking points are the DailyKos talking points,” and “I realized today that these liberal bloggers have no soul.”

7:25 PM. [Nate] Whitman's not bad. Not a dynamic speaker, but she comes across as earnest and credible.

7:15 CDT: [Sean] Coincidentally, moments after Peggy Noonan left the MSNBC set, we found ourselves in line together waiting at the River Center press entrance. Nice, smart, gracious woman. She was unaware her private comments had just been aired (as was I, though it was clear something unintended had gotten on air). Noonan told me that if going for a woman was the decision they wanted, Kay Bailey Hutchinson would have been the wiser pick. We also discussed eBay CEO Meg Whitman, who will address the convention this hour and is a likely candidate for California governor in 2010. Noonan was very impressed (by Whitman, and yes, I am using the tongs tonight).

7:10 CDT: [Sean] Welcome back to St. Paul for Ladies' Night. Former HP exec Carly Fiorina and current eBay CEO Meg Whitman (a strong candidate for California's governor seat in 2010) speak early, and with Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle and VP nominee Sarah Palin speaking late. It's also a night for the runner-ups, with Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani sandwiched in between. In fact, there is an excellent chance that Giuliani will be speaking at 9:11 local time. Christy Swanson just finished speaking... not to be confused with the erstwhile movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

That 9:11 comment made me laugh.

Also, watching on MSNBC, every time they interview one of the Republicans they continue to say things along the lines of "She is incredibly qualified. Beyond that I won't say anything about her because I don't know anything about her and have never met her or heard her name before, but she is incredibly qualified. She is a mother with 5 kids. 9/11."

I'm curious what the critical thinking level of the viewing audience is during this convention.

assmole said...

And Christopher hasn't laughed since... 9/11?

weav said...

I'm wondering if anyone else gets the sense that the Palin pick might have been not just for the christian right, but so the repubs can claim they are being marginalized again (sexism) which works quite well despite the fact that they claim it when they are in control.

Her prepared comments are impressive. I'm getting that sinking feeling.

Why doesn't anyone come out with the spin that if Governor trumps Senator in the experience pecking order then Palin is more experienced than McCain. Or am I missing something?

Apart from that i feel the dems would do well to leave Palin well alone - she's sucking the oxygen out of Obama's campaign and making us look petty

Palin has more executive experience than McCain, I hope she moves to the top of the ticket.

I wouldn't worry about Palin making the Obama campaign look petty, they have really just been sitting on the sidelines this week. It appers she will rip Obama tonight in her speech so that will open her up for a direct hit back and then it is on.

Don't get that sinking feeling.

When Obama isn't in the spotlight, he runs away with the race.

If Palin tweaks Obama and touts her family, it will give the media permission to dig into that "private" corner of her life.

You can't have it both ways - either your family is private or they're not. You don't get to trot them out and claim them as your experience and then not answer questions about them.

Not to mention that ratings for this convention look lower than '04.

Will Walker said...

Frankly, other than Carvel the other night, I haven't seen a Dem surrogate knock Palin yet.

Meg Whitman has the Hillary edge to her. She seems a bit mundane, but I think she would have been effective at picking off some of the Hillary supporters.

Exactly. Just said something similar on another thread here: you can't cry for pity about how you're being unfairly attacked while you yourself take cheap shots.

People are finally waking up and seeing through this freak show.

Brad said...

Carly Fiorina is coming! Can she ruin the U.S. the way she wrecked HP?

Darío said...

yawn.

PorDem said...

Brad-
I have to agree with you. This is just become sad and fast. With John McCain getting 90% from the Republican base already, what is left for them to gain after this convention? Maybe im speaking from high hopes but it seems McCain's polling may go down after polarizing the republican base. It's now a culture war between moderates and the religious right.

Ken said...

Whitman's speech was garbage. She really needs to go to Toastmasters and work on her delivery.

One thing I don't get is the whole 'Obama will raise your taxes' crap. Hasn't the media, factcheck.org and the campaign rebuffed these general claims time and again?

Unless of course, Whiteman is talking to an audience where everyone makes $250,000 - then she's right. But isn't the convention for everyone and not just the top percent of the country? Sounds to me that they are out of touch with the regular American.

LAT said...

sorry if someone posted this already but the Trooper Gate stuff is hitting the fan over at WashPo. It shows Palin was NOT truthful at all in her characterization of her involvement (ie she lied). Once again, is not the crime it's the cover up.

True the Obama campaign has not attacked her much (so far) but repubs apaprently don't distinguish between Obama, the media or the blogosphere (e.g. check out Palin's remarks)

I wonder if Palin's TV audience will be comparable with Obama's?

Yeah, Fiorina stinks. She sounds so memorized, as if she's reading. You'd think they'd actually work on their public speaking skills. Really, this is very amateurish stuff. Anyone can learn to be a somewhat competent speaker in just a few months if they really wanted to. These speakers really suck.

Darío said...

Of course.

This crowd is just waiting for Palin to speak. They will cheer for anything when she comes out. Blunders and all. Because, reading some her excerpts from her speech it looks like she is an attack mode and defensive. Turns off to independents. Repeating the lines of McCain's stump speech with a women voice doesn't make it any more appealing.

"Carly Fiorina sounds like explaining a PowerPoint presentation - very business-like, but not political. Meg Whitman was a little better, but she also suffers from a little "hollowness", but that could be my prejudiced attitude. "

Even power-point presentations shouldn't be that boring. Good speaking is the same in any field - business or politics. She's just a crappy speaker.

Good speaking engages the audience, makes them laugh, touches the heart, makes them think and affects them emotionally.

The stuff we're hearing is just pure drivel.

His "drill baby drill" line might be liked, but it's just ignorant. They've already shown that it will make pennies of a difference and will take 18-30 years to take affect. I don't know why the audience is so worked up about it, and I don't know why 77% of Americans think we should be drilling as the main source.

I swear, in order to vote, you should prove that you put at least 10 hours of research into the candidates and the issues.

Becky et al.,

The Republicans have revealed their playbook on Palin.

They will lie and say it is Obama and the MSM villifying her and as such being sexist.

You can't combat a lie unless you can convince people not to believe it.

The people attacking Palin are the blogosphere and the National Enquirer.

Obama congratulated her and defended her family.

The MSM is just trying to keep up with the blogosphere and the NE. They are not leading the charge.

I heard about Bristol's pregancy Saturday night when I was Googling Palin and found an Alaska blog.

The poster stated that she was from Wisalla and knew the Palin's and the Heath's (?). Anyway she flatout stated that Trig was Sarah's son but that Bristol was pregnant out of wedlock.

We all found out the fact about Bristol Monday. The blogs were ahead by at least 2 days.

How can the MSM and the Obama campaign control the blogs and the NE, let alone take the blame.

I was thinking about the Hail Mary sports analogy for the Palin pick and it is not a good one.

Hail Mary's usually end up incomplete and even iof they are intercepted they are more like a punt.

A better football analogy would be a fake punt inside your own 30 down by ten early in the 2nd half. If not succesful, it can really put you in a hole.

However, for all the hockey moms out there the absolute best sports analogy I came up with was pulling your goalie with 15 minutes to play in the 3rd period. Sure you get the extra attacker, but you leave your net wide open.

Completely, hair brained pick for McCain without vetting. I feel bad for VC.

Huck-

Good job! Play the media hate card. Piss them off more!!! Keep it up !!!!

Mittens was good. I bet alot of Republicans are pulling their hair out over why he wasn't picked.

I am sure Huck will do a good job too.

The schadenfreud of all this will be transcendent.

I like Huckabee alot speaking...but I think he just made a major mistake implying that Obama is just a symbolic candidate "the Presidency is not a symbolic job"...shades of Bill Clinton's comment during the primaries and we see how well that worked out.

Huckabee is not only give a good speech, but he's good at throwing in some humor as well.

"We don't want to change our freedom, security and prosperity?"

Are you kidding me? Is Huckabee saying Obama doesn't support those ideals? What bullsh*t.

I like Huckabee. He was hilarious on the campaign trail. But I hate these kind of lines.

Whatever you think about Huckabee he grew up in real dirt-poor poverty. Like, no indoor plumbing poverty.

McCain et al are laughable with their lawsuit threats against the National Enquirer.

Quite honestly I was ready to ignore it as more tabloid drivel until they started getting all uptight about it.

Now I'm starting to wonder...after all they *were* right about John Edwards, wern't they?

Of course I'm above all this...really...just...research!

I don't like Huck for prez, but I think he would have run a better campaign than McCain. McCain never had to work very hard to be elected because his political career was practically handed to him. Huck learned how to run a campaign.

Huck having been a governor would probably have given him a leg up on Obama. Governors usually do better in prez race than senators.

I have no idea how Huck would have done with independents, though.

Ha! Biden just got destroyed.

Ken said...

Someone should tell Huckabee that Obama doesn't want to change the definition of Marriage either.

And the tire line is tiring. It actually will make a bigger difference than drilling! MORE THAN DRILLING!

Just ignorant.

I have to hand it to Mike Huckabee. He's the only modern Republican who speaks in such a way that I can disagree with him and not feel attacked. I like Huckabee. I'm glad he's not the Republican candidate. He is far and away the most likable of this year's Republican field.

Guys, To judge a speech at the RNC you need to suck out half your brain with an industrial vacuum.

Then just sit their and think about how a low info voter or a Republican will perceive it.

Mittens did well and Huck is doing better.

I am sure Sarah will do a good job too. How good is the question.

I think Biden got more than the 100 some-odd votes that Palin got in her mayoral race.

Look at the huckster go! Wow, best speech of convention so far!

VC - it is hard to see that joke as destroying Binden coming from a man who lost in the primary to McCain...maybe ironically destroying Biden?;)

Becky Sharp said...

I agree. Huckabee is a natural. Always funny too.

Huckabee for Press Secretary.

Julie Carter said...

I don't agree with much that Huckabee says, but he's awfully likeable.

Virginia Conservative said...

Is there something in the water in Hope, AR, that gives you charisma?

Julie Carter said...

What a strange story. Still likeable, but weird.

Dems, this is how we repubs felt last week listening to the DNC.

Becky Sharp said...

His "candidate of change" line to Mittens pretty much killed him off in the primaries.

To be honest I had him as an early lock for VP

beowulf said...

underwealmed and confused at the message?

Virginia Conservative said...

I never thought Mittens would be picked, McCain fucking hates the guy.

I don't think so. Too many shots at the media tonight. I'm convinced the affair story is a Republican plant to cultivate the "poor persecuted Palin family" image. That's why McCain drew attention to it right away.

I think they're going to keep her on the ticket because they know getting rid of her is worse. It's admitting she was a poorly vetted pick, and that McCain is a reckless idiot. Which of course he is. But that's besides the point.

Maybe its payback time. Treat the press like shit for 8 years...

I guess, as a (very peripheral) member of the Daily Kos community, I am one of the soulless ones (makes me feel like an extra from a bad remake of "The Mummy"). Blaming Palin's many woes on the lefty blogs may score political points with the chorus on the right, but it really holds no water. I can only speak for Daily Kos as I don't haunt many other blogs, and I can't even really speak FOR them - only OF them.

There were some diaries posted with the wacky conspiracy theories about Sarah, Bristol, and Trig, most by short term members of the blog. Response to them seemed to be at least 95% negative. Typical comments ranged from the practical: "Seriously, who cares?", "This diary is an embarrassment.", "please for the love of god, STOP these...." to the predictably snarky: "I heard it (the baby) looks like John Edwards", "I heard the baby won't wear a flag lapel pin." and my favorite, "anybody check the font on that kids birth certificate?". This would have quietly faded into deserved oblivion if the McCain campaign hadn't spent so much time being outraged about it.

In fact, all the juicy tidbits of gossip (Bristol's pregnancy, allegations of an affair) came from the McCain campaign as outraged denunciations before I ever saw them on Daily Kos.
