Today we continue our Road to 270 series with the Ocean State, Rhode Island.
DEEP OCEAN BLUE, Rhode Island has the smallest percentage of Republicans of any state in America. Its “Republicans” are often independents, and this is perhaps why Nate lists Rhode Island as the highest percentage of undecideds expected to break for John McCain. Unfortunately for McCain, it won’t be enough in this blue New England enclave. Rhode Island had the second highest Kerry margin in 2004, and the Republican Party has damaged its brand so significantly in Rhode Island that even Lincoln Chafee – a moderate Republican who endorsed Barack Obama – was ousted during the 2006 purge. The state legislature is 5-1 Democratic and Dems hold every statewide seat except governor. Both Congressmen and Senators are Democratic.
Key Demographics
Note: Factors colored in red can generally be thought to help McCain. Factors in blue can generally be thought to help Obama. Factors in purple have ambiguous effects. Except where otherwise apparent, the numbers next to each variable represent the proportion out of each 100 residents in each state who fall into that category. Fundraising numbers reflect dollars raised in the 2008 campaign cycle per eligible voter in each state. Figures for seniors and youth voters are proportions of all residents aged 18+, rather than all residents of any age. The figure for education reflects the average number of years of completed schooling for all adults aged 25+. The figure for same-sex households reflects the number of same-sex partner households as a proportion of all households in the state. The liberal-conservative index is scaled from 0 (conservative) to 100 (liberal), based on a Likert score of voter self-identification in 2004 exit polls. The turnout rates reflect eligible voters only. Unemployment rates are current as of June 2008.
What McCain Has Going For Him
Rhode Island’s Democrats didn’t embrace Barack Obama in the primaries, handing him a big loss to Hillary Clinton on March 4. As mentioned at the outset, McCain will likely benefit from undecided voters – by percentage – as much as any other state. In addition, it’s a fairly old state and below average education state. That’s about it as far as the demographic data goes. This is a rough state for any Republican these days.
What Obama Has Going For Him
As much of a dearth of optimism as there is in the statistical data for John McCain, there’s almost no end to the ways Rhode Island favors Democrats. It’s the 3d most liberal state on the Likert scale, the lowest percentage of male voters, the lowest percentage of white evangelicals, the highest percentage of Catholics, the third lowest percentage of “American” ancestry, the 4th lowest percentage of gun ownership, most people live in urban areas, and it’s in the bottom ten of military veterans. The unemployment rate is very high here, an economic factor that works against the incumbent party. Obama will win Rhode Island by double digits.
What To Watch For
Rhode Island doesn’t even have a good sporting rivalry to mention. And please, Brownies, no email. You either, RISD. Our photographer came up with “Family Guy,” and of course both Dumb and Dumber and Something About Mary began their stories in Providence. But politically this year, there’s no drama except for the inside baseball-ish open question about whether Rhody will have the biggest undecided break for McCain. Oh, and Jack Reed, erstwhile VP speculation subject, is facing a Foxwoods casino pit boss named Robert Tingle in an ultrasafe Senate defense. So watch for "Tingle"-centric headline puns.

Hello!
Unrelated, but a good read
McCain dines at four star restaurant during bailout negotiations.
McCain has problems, but not just in Rhode Island :).
Aargh, not this argument that because undecideds broke for Hillary in the primaries they'll break for McCain in the general! It might have some validity in comparing red states, or even battlegrounds (although I'm skeptical), but it makes no sense in a northeastern blue state.
So why, if the state is that Democratic, does RI have a Republican Governor?
Rhode Island is a tiny state with too many damn democrats. This is excellent news for Rick Davis and Karl Rove.
Sarahlawrencescott,
The claim is not that Hillary voters will move to McCain.
The claim is that McCain will get a lot of "independent" votes here because "Independent" really translates into undeclared Republican in RI.
I do have one suggestion for these "Road to 270" articles, something very simple. Every time i read one of these state profiles, i go do and search for the number of electoral votes the state has. It just seems like it would make sense to put the number of electoral votes the state has, in the title. Like "Road to 270: Rhode Island-4 Electoral Votes" or something like that.
I live in RI, and this state loves Obama. You have no idea how many Obama yard signs and bumper stickers I see on a daiy basis! I actually seen my FIRST McCain sign throughtout this whole election the other day. Sad.
RI FOR OBAMA!!!! :D
You should check out senate candidate Bob Tingle's website. It's ... bizarre, to say the least.
Oldperfesser: Massachusetts had a Republican governor for years, and Vermont has a very popular Republican governor, and those states are about as liberal as Rhode Island. It's all about the governor himself. I would think the Republican governors of these states would be very liberal Republicans, probably more liberal than some southern Democratic politicians.
Rhode Island is so liberal and Democratic that even I voted for (some) Republicans when I lived there.
And Bobby Jindal went to Brown, BTW. It turns a lot of moderates into right-wingers, out of sheer reactionism.
Oops, messed up the link in my last comment. Hopefully this works.
Apparently not.
KOOLOO-LIMPAH!
2004 Bush margin shouldn't be red....
Hey don't knock RISD (club) sports. At least they have a sense of humor. It has a basketball team named the "Balls" and a hockey team named the "Nads." Fans in the stands cheer for the hockey team by shouting out "Go Nads!" (I kid you not.)
BTW/ RI is fervently in the Red Sox Nation, and the Pawtuckett team is an affiliate of the Red Sox. So they definitely have a major league team to root for, in fact also the Brooons and the Patriots.
Falsehood said: 2004 Bush margin shouldn't be red....
I think the bars are colored based on the title, rather than the value itself. (The color is the same for each state.) Thus, small red bar is good for Dems. and small blue bar is good for Reps.

It's not in the title, but it is at the top of the Demographics table - which is labeled "RI / Rhode Island / 4 Electoral Votes"
Where is NH on the state-by-state schedule?
Juris - Every damn college in the history of the english-speaking world has at least one intramural team called the Nads. I played on one in Jr. college back in 1979. By the time I got to a 4-year school, I was a little disappointed to see so many teams with names like "Son of Nads," "Nads Revenge," "Nads on a Stick," Cup o' Nads," "Nads vs. Godzilla," ad infinitum...
So don't score any special points for R.I. sense of humor, there.
There were probably dozens of girls field hockey or rugby teams last year named "Hillary's Nads."

True, but how many were school sanctioned, and even had a school sanctioned 6-foot-tall penis mascot to go with it?: (NSFW) http://risd.dailyjolt.com/albums/album354/pic10119.jpg
This question isn't really on topic, but I was just wondering: What happens to Biden's senate seat if Obama wins?
I don't think Tingle has a website - I just googled him and found no such site.
Completely unbiased on my part, only not, but where's NV on the state by state road to 270 list? XD
Ada: Thank you for the wonderful picture of the mascot. The RISD bookstore also sells caps with a hockey stick and two large pucks on the insignia -- arranged to look like you know what.
This election may wind up being fairly boring like 1996, when the result was foreordained unless McCain can make a comeback in the next week. That's certainly possible with the Palin-Biden debate.
Everybody is panning Sarah Palin, she's become a national joke after her 2nd interview -- so much so that Tina Fey of SNL actually used her exact words in her comedy routine with almost no exaggeration!
When your interview -- word for word -- can be used as a comedy routine that's as bad as it can get.
So, there's nowhere but up for her to go. Either she comes out and falls flat as she did with Couric, or else she memorizes all her sound-bites, and comes off as "prepared."
In that case, millions of people will say "she's just been unfairly criticized in the media." Those people would be wrong, but America is full of idiots like that.
The pundits would all jump on the Palin bandwagon and say "she exceeded expectations" just by not misspelling "Potatoe."
Republicans would be re-energized and the race would tighten again.
That's almost certainly NOT going to be enough in the midst of this economic crisis, but we could wind up 3 weeks from now with the media forgetting totally about the ongoing crisis (since there's no immediate new news to report about it), and focusing instead on Palin's knocked up daughter's wedding.
That in fact is McCain's "miracle plan": McCain camp prays for Palin wedding
"The marriage of the vice-presidential candidate’s pregnant teenage daughter could lift a flagging campaign."
In an election campaign notable for its surprises, Sarah Palin, the Republican vice- presidential candidate, may be about to spring a new one — the wedding of her pregnant teenage daughter to her ice-hockey-playing fiancé before the November 4 election.
Inside John McCain’s campaign the expectation is growing that there will be a popularity boosting pre-election wedding in Alaska between Bristol Palin, 17, and Levi Johnston, 18, her schoolmate and father of her baby. “It would be fantastic,” said a McCain insider. “You would have every TV camera there. The entire country would be watching. It would shut down the race for a week.”
So, that's the plan: a desperate attempt to wrench the nation's attention away from real issues and focus it all on personalities and stupidity! And they think it might work because Americans are fundamentally stupid and ignorant people.
I'd say in a normal year they might even be right. This doesn't appear to be a normal year of course, but then I never underestimate the folly of the American people so I give it about the same chance as Nate does: about 1 in 5.
The idea that the wedding would shut down the campaign for a week is ludicrous. Even the greatest financial crisis since the Depression shut it down for only a day. The week-long shut down is just a McCain campaign's wet dream.
I think that the republican strategy for the VP debate is going to be, to have Palin flat out attack Obama. She will get confused and inaccurate if she gives direct and detailed answers to the questions, but she is a very good attack dog. In other words, I see her giving only the most superficial answers to the questions before flying off into an attack. They will try to have her repeat in spirit her RNC speech, in a debate format. It is something she can do well especially after she has been “beat up by the media” just like she was before the RNC. It played well in St. Paul, and they will be hoping for the same response again. It will be difficult for Biden to counter attack without opening himself up to the anti-women charges. Personally, I thought her RNC speech was mean spirited and cynical, but the idiot electorate seemed to love it.
Oh, here's the link for the McCain camp's latest scheme to make the race about trivial crap instead of real issues: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article4837644.ece
McCain's advisers know that he's lost and are basically admitting it. All that's left is one more "hail Mary" pass, and hope voters are stupid enough to fall for it.
McCain is expected to have a front-row seat at Bristol’s wedding and to benefit from the outpouring of goodwill that it could bring. “What’s the downside?” a source inside the McCain campaign said. “It would be wonderful. I don’t know that there has ever been a pre-election wedding before.”
What's the downside indeed! They're basically out of ammo here. They've tried everything to twist the debate onto personalities and gutter personal attacks and it's all failed. Obama is not an "empty celebrity" no matter how many millions of $ they spend claiming he is one. One debate appearance where he appeared in command, calm and collected sank their campaign.
Like I said in June, those attacks were doomed: all they did was raise questions about whether Obama is ready to lead. But then people get to see the real Obama during the debates and face to face with McCain he doesn't appear to be out of his depth at all. So the entire line of attack falls to the ground.
So, what's really left for them to try?
"Obama's a MUSLIM!"
"Obama's BLAAAACK! Scary!"
"Obama's an elitist!"
"McCain's the war-hero POW!"
"Original Maverick!"
"Obama's the empty celebrity!"
"Dangerous world! Be afraid! Wolves ad part II!"
After all this garbage, they're 6% behind with about a month to go. Might as well keep throwing long bombs on 4th down!
I think you're right, Charlie. The point of Veep debates in any case isn't to find out what the Veeps actually think -- their own policy views -- it's to get them to speak about that the Pres candidate would do and to attack the other candidate.
So Sarah will be well prepared with attacks on Obama, maybe one or two on Biden in hope of provoking him into an attack on her.
BTW, Biden's best approach also is to attack McCain -- as only someone who has worked along side him for two decades can do, perhaps in the same vein as Barbara Boxer did so effectively a week or so ago.
Rhode Island is a tough state for someone like Obama. Its electorate is old, Catholic, lower-class, unbelievably stupid, and unrepentantly racist.
The way to get attention in Rhode Island is to promise an obscene amount of graft. If Obama is strapped for cash, he might get by if he mails everyone a coupon for a box of donuts and a lap dance.
Abacab - you're a moron. I'm a Rhode Islander, and to say that the electorate is "unbelievably stupid" is just insane. Rhode Islanders, while I see, are not the highest in education levels, do not allow that to creep into their levels of common sense (like we see in the south). RI'ers are driven to vote by socially liberal values, which makes sense since our founder Roger Williams founded the land based upon religious freedoms. We choose presidents to best represent EVERYONE, presidents who will make the country thrive! That's why Rhode Islanders in 2008 are going to choose Barack Obama in a landslide!!
I still think we are in good shape (I'd much rather be where we are now than 2 weeks ago). I would call it very very very cautious optimism. I'm very nervous about the VP debates, the Bradley effect, the Diebold effect, the voter intimidation and purging effect, etc. At least I am no longer the least bit nervous about the the remaining presidential debates.
Oh yes, there is also the Swift Boat effect. But I don't think that will work anymore as the McCain campaign needs the press to run with those ads. They have already inoculated media against their dirty attacks by going to them to early in the campaign.
afons12dB -
You're an even bigger moron because you're still there. I left as soon as I turned 18. I know whereof I speak. Ed DiPrete, Buddy Cianci, Bianchini, Traficante, Mollicone...shall I go on?
BTW, I'm voting for Obama, too, so your dimwit belligerance is misplaced.
Here's a completely off-the-wall question that has been bugging me lately:
In the history of televised debates, has it ever been the case that one of the two debaters has had a head-cold?
Given the sorts of things that newcasters fixate on after the debate, it seems like a bad case of the sniffles would de facto lose the debate for the poor sick sap...
In the history of televised debates, has it ever been the case that one of the two debaters has had a head-cold?
Nixon had the flu...
I don't know about head colds, but Clinton had laryngitis or something (he was very hoarse) in a debate against Bush Sr., and he won resoundingly.
Smallest percentage of Republicans... wow, I just found my dream state. I don't care what economic factors are in play (1st or 2nd worst unemployment), what the weather is like (yeah, cold I know), and you have those Ghost Hunters dudes running around... but just the sheer idea of a state with less Repubs gives me the warm fuzzies all over. I live in Calif... sure, we're blue... except I live in the friggin' Bible Belt red-zone of Calif. Who knew Calif had a Bible Belt? I'm surrounded by ancient white Republican zombies, er, I mean, retirees... they're everywhere. Some nights I wake up in a cold sweat. Are they at our door? Waiting to rip the flesh from our bones with their dentures? Yeah, I gotta start checking out real estate in RI.
The idea that the wedding would shut down the campaign for a week is ludicrous.
This IS McCain's campaign we're talking about. He'll try anything this election, without any regard to its sensibility. Much like how he'd run our country.
Just a thought on the notion that the wedding will be a winner for the McCain/Palin ticket. Pictures of an eight month pregnant child marrying a high school jock who weeks ago professed an interest in partying and playing hockey is going to simply be fodder for derision, not a vote garnering event.
Palin is probably safe unless the party elders decide to pressure McCain. They will probably wait until after the VP debates just to make sure she is not a total flake.
Does anyone know if the RNC has announced any changes in funding strategy - such as spending more on downticket Senate races or promising to coordinate spending more closely with the Congressional races?

Not sure what point you're trying to make here. Traditionally "red" states and "blue" states have Governor's from the other side of the isle. My home state of Connecticut has had Republican governors for as long as I can remember, but is solidly blue in presidential elections and thus considered a "blue" state. (Perhaps with the exception of Reagan and H.W., any earlier is before my time.)
Rhode Island is as competitive as Alabama right now.

Sept 28 Polling Update
One of the most interesting developments of the last week is the expansion of the tipping point states. These have been fairly static, but as the polls improve, and the map expands, there seems to be so many new ways to reach 270. Even Texas is currently not white.
RI is a great place to live -- abacad, it's true that there has been a line of corrupt politicians, no doubt about it. But, we've also elected Chafee Sr., Chafee Jr., Jack Reed, Claudine Schneider, Patrick Kennedy. Some good people.
A few months ago I sat in Blue State Coffee House with Barack's brother-in-law, who at the time was basketball coach at Brown. He's moved up the NCAA ladder of success now (Oregon State?), but I still have vivid and warm memories of listening to him give interviews.
"So why, if the state is that Democratic, does RI have a Republican Governor?"
Wyoming's governor is a Democrat. People like to split tickets so a party doesn't get too comfortable.
abacab has it spot on. RI is v. racist (despite the mythology to the contrary), is radically under-educated and is reactionary. The response to Obama has been cool at best (just b/c there aren't McCain signs doesn't mean people don't support him) and it is amazing to see how many people "just don't know what he stands for" or "are afraid for him". This may not be the case for everyone who makes those comments, but it frequently comes across as a sad attempt to hide racism.
And I'd just like to throw out there that this state, no matter how much people want to deny it, is absurdly corrupt and five good people don't balance that. Coupled with the second highest rate of unemployment in the nation, a shrinking population, declining median income, non-existent job growth, incredibly high taxes, an entitlement culture, a lack of political will to change anything, and, lest we forget, the worst drivers in the nation, I have a hard time understanding what is so great about this State.
I though it was Me, Myself and Irene that was in RI...?
Nah fuh nuthin but heyahs what I think bout rho disland...
In the 2000 primary, RI had one of the highest percentages for McCain over Bush, 60.2-36.5
Clinton won RI big in the 2008 primary because the political machine, the super-delegates, came out early for her, ahead of any interest in the race, and pushed for her in public forums.
My sports analogy would be "The Longest Game" played by Pawtucket Red Sox versus the Rochester Red Wings. Why? Not only did the PawSox go on to win after an unnecessary game suspension, but this seems to have been the longest campaign in history :-P
Also the game featured two Hall of Fame stars, Cal Ripkin Jr, the Iron Man, with a loooooong professional record (despite injuries) and Wade Boggs, All-Star slugger.
I think Rhode Island is a great state to live. First of all, to respond to a couple of the people on this board, Rhode Island is no more corrupt that any other state. Its disadvantage PR-wise comes from "Don Imus a-hole types", who blow the Cianci thing out of proportion because they love Sopranos-esque fantasies. Many idiots from outside the region think we're all in the Mafia. That's Hollywood stuff.
Our state has a great quality of life-- it's been improving since the 80's. Rhody went for Hillary, because she and Bill have visited the state a zillion times in the past 16 years, and they have many friends here; and because the Clinton years were prosperous compared to the 12 total nightmare Bush years. Obama, while I voted for him and am thrilled with him, certainly in March was an unknown quantity back then. And the state went for Hillary as a known quantity, who would be able to improve the economy.
The state has typical race problems that any state typically would. Not good, but no worse than any other. The state has a zillion diverse ethnicities and cultures, all of whom mix pretty well. Catholics dominate the state, but there's no 1910-style Yankee-Immigrant or Protestant-Catholic tensions-conflicts anymore, because of intermarriage and new generations burying that insanity. Catholics, in general, are more like St Francis of Assisi types, rather than Bob Dornan types.
Generally, there's no more than three degrees of separation between any Rhode Islander. The state is like one big municipality.
Crime is pretty low. Public schools are solid. Rhode Islanders put a lot of emphasis on education. Colleges here are excellent, both state and private. URI for engineering; RISD for the fine arts; Bryant for business; RIC for teaching; PC excellent liberal arts; Brown one of the best in the country. Roger Williams and Salve, etc, are here too; The bay is great in the summer. We're an hour from Boston, and 2-3 hours to New York. Close to the skiing of NH and Vermont. Lots of historic points of interest. Excellent restaurants. Safe neighborhoods in general.
I was born here, grew up here, and still live here; and my wife is from Florida; and we're very happy to be raising our kids here. I don't understand the bad rap Rhode Island is getting from people on this board.
Sorry if I missed the answer to this, already, but why are these values out of 50 instead of 51? Do you not have the data for DC?
Ah my erstwhile home state. I've lived all over (FL, HI, NYC, MA) and I still want to end up in RI when it's all said and done. Great people, diversity, colleges, food, beaches. Plus proximity to Boston and NY.
I'd like to add Claiborne Pell, whose grant helps millions of kids in college each year.
Abacad, I can't believe you brought up Mollicone and Traficante, as if they represent anyone. Every state has is shady characters, it's just that in a little place like RI they get blown out of proportion.
And look, I'm black (actually Cape Verdean) and i've never experienced any racism. there are too many ethnicities here for any of that to take hold.
