Presidential Debate Liveblog #1: Live From Oxford

Debate Club - BrettMarty.com

7:53 CDT: [Sean] However, the GOP is in a bind. If Palin is removed from the ticket somehow, as was suggested on NRO today, here endeth the groundgame. I don't think they could survive that, and it would make McCain look like he was admitting he picked her for political reasons -- which he obviously did -- but that would make it hard for him to explain while introducing a second pick. Not to mention the logistics of removing her name now that she's been nominated, and early voting has started with her name on the ballot.

7:50 CDT: [Sean] The crisis also plays terribly with the Palin pick, because it's increasingly clear that regardless of the way she connects or doesn't connect with someone on the personality level, she doesn't pass the laugh test for qualification. I don't mean that in as partisan way as you might think. Analytically, she's obviously not qualified. It's inarguable. But prior to the crisis it was much easier to imagine a world where she could skate by for 60 days not facing questions and having an American Idol election. Now, I think people are honestly scared by the economic circumstances, and it may shock independents into refusing to take that risk of a McCain-Palin ticket.

All about Me - BrettMarty.com

7:39 CDT: [Sean] I think Obama's thoughtful style will play very well in this moment. People have been shocked into seriousness with the financial crisis. They really, really care about the substance of what these guys say during the debate. There's a meta communication that Obama gives off of being calm and nuanced, that he can explain something in depth. It's reassuring The simpleton "What do we do with evil, negotiate with it or defeat it? Defeat it!" Q-and-A that McCain is better at than Obama won't fly during this crisis. That's my take.

7:33 CDT: [Sean] If I ever get cited in an Obama memo (yard signs, anyone?), Ben Smith will still attribute it to Nate.

7:31 CDT: [Sean] Also, in case you missed it, the Obama campaign is citing "Nate Silver" in its obligatory lower-expectations memo.

Big Coal - BrettMarty.com

7:27 CDT: [Sean] When we chatted this afternoon, Nate made the incisive point about tragedy versus crisis. We've had a flurry of posting activity today, so in case you missed it and it got buried below, check it out. It's exactly right.

7:24 CDT: [Sean] Hey, there's T. Boone Pickens. It's official. 2008 is the year of the wind turbine image in political ads.

7:22 CDT: [Sean] Our only outlet has been installing satellite radio when we were in Vegas, so we get the CNN feed. When the catastrophically insufferable Lou Dobbs comes on in the afternoon, Brett likes the "Coffeehouse" station. He's one of them liberals. I like "Classic Vinyl."

The Dean - BrettMarty.com

7:15 CDT: [Sean] Nate's on NYC radio for a little bit and will be joining us soon (see preceding post) so I'll be getting this party started from Oxford, Mississippi.

We've somehow driven over 4,500 miles in the past two weeks. Between Denver, St. Paul, and the On the Road series, it's been exhilarating nonstop travel through this election landscape. Still, we're in a bit of a bubble away from blogs and most of the news coverage, and it seems that as we were visiting field offices and talking to volunteers and communications directors and precinct captains, the economy is entering an apocalypse. So, that's bad. Look for that subject to come up tonight.

Every place you go there's a different flavor, and no less so here. Brett has some great pictures of the crowds we'll be filtering out during the night. Thanks for spending the night watching the debate here at FiveThirtyEight.

WOW OBAMA IS KICKING MCCAIN'S ASS IN THIS DEBATE!!!!

That part where Obama actually made a point and McCain did his Mr Roper smile?

Priceless...

Oh sorry just practicing.

fred said...

Obama can hit the killshot tonight, or McCain can revive his scattered campaign.

The wildcard to me is McCain's lack of debate prep (the went poorly for Carter) and his age - McCain just had one of his longest days of the campaign, Look for him to wilt in the last half hour.

InkStain said...

The expectations are so low at this point, McCain just has to survive the debate and Obama just has to still be black when it's over.

Happened in MS too, here is a black guy talking about it:

"Mr. Burney's words are forever burnished in my memory: "You young people need to see what's going on in Oxford, Mississippi. Now pay attention."

He turned on the black-and-white set and sat in the rear of the room. First, we saw President John F. Kennedy's face and heard his familiar voice -- a voice that inspired trust in Negroes. He had ordered federal troops to Oxford to help a little skinny Negro named James Meredith enroll in the University of Mississippi.

Meredith would be the first Negro to enroll in this bastion of Jim Crow.

Next, we saw the scowling face of Mississippi Gov. Ross Barnett, and then we heard his voice. He passionately declared himself a "segregationist," and he vowed that no Negro would ever attend Ole Miss.

My usually rambunctious schoolmates and I were stone silent as we watched dozens of outnumbered U.S. marshals try to push back a white mob of hundreds. Then, on the TV screen, we saw all hell break loose. Chants of "nigger" became action. Molotov cocktails, bottles and bricks rained down on the marshals.

We watched the scene in horror. These were white people fighting other white people because of Meredith -- a Negro.

...

Before calm was restored -- after troops arrived from Fort Bragg's Company A 503 MP Battalion and the Mississippi National Guard -- two rioters had been killed and 200 others injured. "

Sadly, I can't be on here and watch the debate at the same time so I'll have to check back when it's over. Lots of luck to Obama. David Brown said...

Debate expectations mean different things. Sometimes if the public things one candidate will win it is because they WANT that candidate to win. Since Obama is not known as a good debater (and McCain is), I suspect this is part of the story.

Bottom line: Obama only has to look and sound presidential and he will win the war if not the battle.

I don't think people will buy the low expectation game personally. They both have to be on top their game. If McCain claims he is tired from doing what he has been doing, the age argument comes up inevitably. Obama same thing, has to be on his game and show he hasn't been phased. But, with the McCain camp already coming out saying he is tired, won't play well. Excuses don't work when you are the incumbent party.

The difference is that this is the general election and not a complete circus. That's what the Republican debates were. Plus, McCain's one and only tactic was team up with Huckabee to make Romney look foolish. Romney should have won all of the debates but McCain was a total dick and Huckabee was his shadow.

Gergen agrees with me about unfair epxectations for Obama.

Toobin mentioned 538.com is a fantastic site and referred to the pint that Inkstain and I have been making consistently that the debates have never, not one time flipped the winner, if the leader pre-debates was way ahead. Nixon-Kennedy in '60 were about tied and Kennedy squeaked it out. Reagan-Carter in 1980, Reagan pulled away. 2 out of 18 and those two were about tied pre-debates. Obama already won. Fingers crossed.

Howie said...

This time around he invests in natural gas and then pushes a huge "compassionate" campaign to get all of our cars to run on it. Cha-ching! Sure, it's probably better than oil, but we need to just skip that step and go straight for hydrogen, or electric, or anything else.

Geoff said...

Not that you all want to know, but here's my take:

http://centristnetblog.com/daily-news/debate-tonight-election-on-the-line/

Obama v. McCain Tonight - Election on the Line

Reversing his earlier pledge to skip tonight’s debate against Barack Obama in Mississippi, John McCain announced that he will debate tonight. McCain had on Wednesday suspended campaign operations as of Thursday morning and stated he would return to DC to work on the bailout and not attend tonight’s debate if the deal was not completed. By all accounts, last night’s meeting at the White House with the candidates, congressional leaders and Bush did not finalize any bailout deal.

After the meeting last night and this morning, McCain worked on convincing House GOP members to provide some room for negotiation. Now, citing “progress” in the negotiations, McCain announced he’ll attend the debate with the following statement:

Senator McCain has spent the morning talking to members of the Administration, members of the Senate, and members of the House. He is optimistic that there has been significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement now that there is a framework for all parties to be represented in negotiations, including Representative Blunt as a designated negotiator for House Republicans. The McCain campaign is resuming all activities and the Senator will travel to the debate this afternoon. Following the debate, he will return to Washington to ensure that all voices and interests are represented in the final agreement, especially those of taxpayers and homeowners.

McCain clearly had to back off of his bravado on Wednesday to bow to political reality - a large majority of America wanted the debate to go forward - 60-22%. Looking back on the past three days, that McCain has accomplished four things: 1. Taking the media’s focus off of his advisor’s ties to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and Palin’s interview with Couric; 2. Putting Obama on the defensive and forcing him to come to the DC meeting instead of focusing on debate preparation; 3. Forcing the Democrats to sit down and listen to House GOP proposals, perhaps laying the seeds of a compromise; and 4. Increasing the stakes of tonight’s debate.

A quick review of history shows that the political environment favors the Democrats this year - only one time in modern history has a party held the White House after a two-term presidency: 1988. In 1988, Reagan was over 50% approval and the economy was not in crisis - today, Bush is at 30% approval and the economy is on the brink of potential meltdown.

The fact that McCain has seized the spotlight with his suspension gambit, while high risk, is also high reward. If McCain can seize the stage tonight, “over the head” of the media and directly to the American public, any media handringing over his tactics will melt away into a narrative of McCain strength. If he falters tonight, McCain will fall back into a significant electoral disadvantage and a feeling of inevitability may grow about an Obama victory. Tonight’s debate will be watched by many more voters than any event so far in Election 2008 - perhaps 60 million or more.

A useful “tale of the tape” summary by Politico is here. The format tonight will allow McCain and Obama room to directly confront each other. Obama’s debate negotiator, D.C. lawyer Bob Barnett, stated that the “unprecedented” structure of the debate allows for “free-form discussion” between the candidates. Centrists and independents will carefully scrutinize the nominees tonight and the tone of the last six weeks of the campaign will be set tonight. If Obama can take a perceived win or tie, his momentum will grow and McCain will be left to search for another game changing event. If McCain can win a clear perceived victory, centrist and independent voter reluctance to vote for Obama could increase and translate into a McCain lead going into the VP debate.

I think that Obama is very popular, but if Ireland was one of the states it would be a heavily red one. I have met one woman that thinks Obama is a "bollox" because of the "Put lipstick on a pig" comment.

One of the concerns on obama here is how he will deal with Irish issues.

fred said...

There are only two guys that can win this, I am very glad I don't have to listen to Nader (who still thinks it is 1960) and who has the gall to argue the world would be the same if Gore had won.

"inkstain you like reagan?"

Let's just say that if I were living through the height of the Cold War, and I needed someone to stare down an Evil Empire across the world, Reagan is the guy I would want on my side.

Before he got senile, he had this air about him that said "Mess with me and I will bite your #@!% face off and spit it out in front of your kids."

Again, why let someone else tell you who is "legit" and who is not? Put them all on stage and let the PEOPLE decide.

My analogy for this debate...

Game 3 of 7 Obama up 2-0 after 2 home wins (cut out all of Mccain's nonsense and the conventions were a wash this is still about the economy and change which Obama clearly owns)

a clear O victory and this thing is essentially over 3-0 with 4 games to play, Mccain would need a miracle of bosox proportions. A loss hurts Obama, but O is still winning... Game time!!!!

Possibly appealing to the Irish vote?

Its true however that business taxes in Ireland are very very low by European standards. Its one of our strategies for attracting outside investment, and companies setting up in Ireland. HOWEVER that means that our infrastructure has not been keeping up with the rest of europe.

So hes using a country with a non typical tax regime

Does Obama not read Fivethirtyeight??
