McCain Is Stuck With Palin

Commentators on the left, right and center, reacting with near-horror to Sarah Palin's interview with Katie Couric, have each suggested that John McCain ought to put Palin on the next flight to Ketchikan, and replace her with another vice presidential nominee.

Now, none of these folks are necessarily arguing that this would be a good move for McCain electorally. They instead seem to be arguing, in essence, that it would be good for the country (how small-minded of them!).

But could such a move actually help McCain at the ballot box? My feeling is absolutely not, for several reasons:

1. Destroys Base Morale. No matter how well this is spun -- Palin withdrew to tend to her family because the liberal media are big meanies! -- Palin remains a major reason why conservative activists are showing up every day to make phone calls for John McCain. And to remove her from the ticket now would be a slap in the face. Now, I had argued before that McCain essentially ought to call the base's bluff -- nominate someone who appeals to independents, and almost literally dare them to vote for Barack Obama. But that was at least assuming that McCain would have a full two months or so to smooth things over, and convince them that Tom Ridge (or whomever) wasn't such a bad guy. If McCain were to drop Palin now, however, a lot of these folks would be heartbroken -- and a lot of them would not turn out, particularly if an Obama victory appeared inevitable anyway. Not only would this hurt McCain, but it would also harm downballot candidates; the odds of Democrats finishing with 60+ Senate seats or 260+ House seats would increase markedly.

2. No Obvious Alternative. If the Republicans had some obvious next-runner-up like Hillary Clinton sitting on the sidelines, this maneuver might become more viable. However, they do not, which is part of the reason that Palin had been picked in the first place.

With less than zero time for a roll-out of the replacement, he would almost have to be a familiar brand name. Mitt Romney? With the nation's attention focused on the economy, he'd seem to be the most likely choice, but a lot of people don't like him, and "Bain Capital" is not exactly compatible with "Main Street". Besides, would Romney really want to associate himself with what would probably be a losing ticket, when he could instead position himself as Mr. Fix-It in 2012? Rudy Giuliani? He's tested.ready.now but that's moving in the direction of national security credentials at a time the country is interested in other things. And talk radio would revolt. Joe Lieberman? I'm not even sure that McCain could pull that off even if he wanted to; some prominent members of the RNC (who have a veto) might object, happy enough to throw what they'd think to be a losing nominee under the bus for the sake of preserving the conservative movement. Fred Thompson? Actually might be the least-bad alternative, as he rehabilitated his image some with a strong convention speech. But he ran perhaps the most indifferent campaign in modern history, and the last thing the Republicans need is another VP nominee who doesn't seem particularly serious about the office of the Presidency. Which brings us to...

3. McCain Has Overplayed the Game-Changer Card. McCain already runs the risk of his campaign appearing to be something of a three-ring circus, with Britney Spears in one ring, Palin in another, and the "suspension" of his campaign in a third. To replace Palin now might make his campaign seem like a farce. And when was the last time the candidate who was the butt of more jokes won the election? Possibly 1992, but the presence of Ross Perot -- not to mention Dana Carvey's terrific George H.W. Bush -- made the comedy inherent in that election more or less an equal opportunity affair.

Finally, while there isn't much hard evidence to go on, there is this: George McGovern went from 19 points behind Richard Nixon in a Gallup poll taken in mid-July 1972 -- just after Thomas Eagleton had been nominated at the Democratic convention -- to a -26 in early August after he had dumped Eagleton from the ticket.

Palin can't be replaced but McCain can. You heard it here first.

The RNC is not in the business of losing and will do whatever it takes to avoid it. There's too much at stake--for instance, all the incriminating evidence buried in West Wing filesevers.

If it becomes obvious McCain is going to lose, there's no reason not to.

Sarah Palin is smarter than Dan Quayle, and she's about as experienced as Dan Quayle was, and Quayle didn't keep Bush I from being elected. Palin strikes a strong and deep chord in all those who resent seeing the nerdy kid grow up to be more successful than the high school in-crowd. People who support her will think she did great in the debate, because she aggressively and gleefully insists that being cute and popular is better than being a know-it-all-smarty-pants.

I don't think I'll be able to stand to watch the debate, and I'm sure if I do watch it I'll find her performance horrifyingly ignorant and mean. But having been a nerdy kid myself, it doesn't surprise me that a cute, ignorant mean girl is popular.

How things have changed:

August:

Republicans: Sarah Palin is our saviour! She bumped McCain into the lead over that evil Obama. She motivated our base! We love her!

Democrats: Aieeeee! Nooooo! Palin is evil! Be afraid... be very afraid!!!

October:

Republicans: Gosh, Sarah isn't doing so well. Maybe McCain should replace her with Romney/Huckabee/Thompson/Giuilani/Lieberman/etc.

Democrats: Noooooooo... don't leave us, Sarah! We love you Sarah!

I love politics.

OOH! I got a good one for John "Snake Eyes" McCain- Here's my suggestion:

DOUBLE DOWN!

McCain should select George W. Bush for VP! Who knows the economy better that the guy that drove it into the ground in the first place. He'd be affirming what we all know anyway....that'd be some real Straight Talk....

The chief problem with the Electoral College is not the vote allocation to the states, but the winner-takes-all vote distribution system. Winning California's 55 electoral votes with only 56% of the popular vote is a sham - that 44% opposition represents more people (16 million) than the entire populations of Wyoming, Vermont, North Dakota, Alaska, South Dakota, Delaware, Montana, Rhode Island, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Idaho, Nebraska, and West Virginia combined.

And their actual representation in the electoral college? 0.

Proportional voting: try it sometime.

As has been stated 100 times on this thread already, this would solve nothing. It would lead to endless fights over redistricting. It would make the vote far MORE EASILY manipulated and disproportionate, not less.

That would have been a mind-bogglingly stupid decision at the time. Had he been deciding after McCain's pick, it would have been much more viable depending on the circumstances.

As an Obama fan, I personally didn't like the idea of a Hillary selection because of the dust ups between her and Obama for the entire first half of this year. I thought it would have undercut at least a portion of his "change" mantra.

But, being as objective as possible, although that might have irked some of Obama's fans the wrong way, I think there would have been a net gain in supporters. I believe the true portion of his base that would have been significantly discouraged (those supporters who would not vote for him based solely on the selecting of Clinton) would have been quite a small percentage. On the other hand, support from rank and file blue collar democrats in those Clinton wheelhouse states (OH, PA, MI, WV, IN, even FL) would have risen markedly.

Also, I believe that the bitter taste left in the mouth of the pro-Obama/anti-Hillary fans who came out to vote Jan-Jun would have dissipated as soon as they saw how atrocious McCain had really become. The demographics suggest that Obama's wheelhouse includes the more educated and more affluent. Voters of those demographic persuasions I think are more likely to understand the politics and subtle nuances that might cause a Hillary VP pick and suck it up. Again, when the name "Obama" is at the top of the ticket, I believe the majority of his base would let bygones be bygones.

My personal view: I'm not a Hillary supporter at all. She leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But I still would have voted for Obama/Clinton over McCain/anyone. I think right now an Obama/Clinton ticket would be polling better in OH, PA, MI, WV, IN, FL. What states would that ticket be polling worse than Obama/Biden? I don't know, but probably only a couple states would have been jeopardized in the grand scheme of things. First one that comes to mind is IA... not sure about many of the others.

I agree with the post. If there was ever a time to dump Palin for a more reputable and certainly better suited VP candidate, it has long past.

I don't feel for McCain, or his campaign. They've pulled far too many stunts at the American voter's expense, and now it's starting to cost them.

That's what happens when you approach the presidency as something lightly and severely underestimate the intelligence of the nation.

Replacing Palin now would be suicide. Especially with Romney. I now it sounds unorthodox, but there was a reason why Romney was not chosen:

AMPAD

Romney is a corporate raider by trade. In the early 1990s, he went and bought a viable union paper company in northeastern Indiana called Ampad. They make the writing tablets we all see on our desks this very moment.

He went in on a Friday and told the employees their jobs were safe. On Monday morning, every employee was given a pink slip and the jobs were sent out of country.

It came back to haunt him when he ran against Ted Kennedy in 1994. He had done this many times before and since. Mitt Romney would be toxic in this economy for the ticket. Palin knows very little. Romney knows too much. Which would you choose when the records are out there for the picking by the media? Too little.

Economic Republicans are harder to keep in the stable than the lambs of the Christian right.

Deadp, I didn't know Trolls were Christian ... but it makes some things more understandable if it's true.

If Palin is the smartest woman in America we're in reaaaaally deep do-do.

I think you're right that she can "win" the debate, because expectations are so low and the format is so constricted that canned lines are all she needs. She's good at that.

As for: "She will rule this world with christian justice."

Yes, she does increase the odds of Armageddon and burnings at the stake.

See, we mostly agree!

McCain Game Plan 101: Wait for verdict on VP debate, if polls are fine n' dandy then obviously no major changes required. If debates turn south, you can betcha bottom dollar McCain will throw the whole kitchen sink, and anything he can get his hands on into this race.

Kitchen Sink Plan 102: Use upcoming TrooperGate headline to throw Queen Palin (most likely transformed into the ugly duckling) under the bus and nominate a new VP, whomever Sir McCain desires. Hell! McCain could even nominate Palin's daughter as VP if she had a compelling story.

The truth is, McCain's campaign? NO ethics, NO rules, NO morals, NO plans, just down n' out rotten.

And Sarah Palin? It is not her beliefs which are wrong, but believes she is right. That's the problem!

From the disastrous Katie Couric interview:

|||

Question: "What happens if the goal of democracy doesn't produce the desired outcome? In Gaza, the U.S. pushed hard for elections and Hamas won."

Palin's Answer: "Yeah, well especially in that region, though, we have to protect those who do seek democracy and support those who seek protections for the people who live there. What we're seeing in the last couple of days here in New York is a President of Iran, Ahmadinejad, who would come on our soil and express such disdain for one of our closest allies and friends, Israel ... and we're hearing the evil that he speaks and if hearing him doesn't allow Americans to commit more solidly to protecting the friends and allies that we need, especially there in the Mideast, then nothing will."

|||

Amazing. Palin could easily have answered this question in ways the Republicans could live with, if

a) she'd known where Gaza was
b) she'd known what heppened there and its significance to US policy
c) she'd known that Ahmedinejad was elected

She knew that she was clueless on these matters and tried to bury her ignornace on the the question in a mainstream mantra about supporting democracy and Israel.

Really this was a softball question. She could have talked about democracy being about more than just elections, and about elections not being a silver bullet. She could have stressed the importance of building up the bedrock of democracy in institutions such as a free press, about the separation of powers, noting the presence of these things in all true democracies.

Somewhere in the back of her tiny liltte brain, these ideas might well have been lurking, but if so, she couldn't find them when she needed them because she was basically ignorant, and/or had never troubled to follow foreign policy, aside perhaps from noting Alaska's proximity to Russia and Canada.

She is a political karaoke queen -- able to sing from the hymn sheet wwhen the music is going and the words are on a teleprompter, but hopeless at anything which involves sustained reflection.

Can McCain keep this woman on the ticket? Maybe he has to, Dumping her would probably administer the coup de grace to his campaign and it's hard to believe he could persuade anyone who took him or herself seriously to sign onto it. His judgement under pressure, the asset he depends on most, would be seriously tainted if he were forced to drop her and large parts of the conservative base would depart.

On the other hand, the more she opens her mouth the more doubtful more mainstream conservatives get about the potential for a President Palin, and the more the state of McCain's health becomes an issue. As the perceptions that the US is in crisis intensify, persisting with her looks worse and worse for McCain.

Perhaps the best option would be for her to withdraw "for family reasons", but even this will harm McCain.

McCain really is between a rock and a hard place now.
