A little birdseed for the night owls out there: the AP is reporting that ex-Virginia governor Mark Warner will deliver the Tuesday night address at the Democratic Convention in Denver.
Senate candidate and former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner is scheduled to deliver the Tuesday night keynote address at this year's Democratic National Convention — the same role that launched Barack Obama to national prominence four years ago.I have to confess to being a little bit surprised by this. Contrary to the reporting of some outlets, Hillary Clinton had never formally been guaranteed the keynote slot -- rather, she had merely been guaranteed a prime-time speaking slot on Tuesday. But the perception out there was that Tuesday would be "her" night, and we can expect some growling from the PUMAs about Hillary being snubbed.Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's rival during the Democratic presidential primaries, is also scheduled to speak that night, Aug. 26. But Warner is being given the plum position, according to an e-mail that Obama campaign adviser Mike Henry sent to Virginia supporters late Tuesday.
One would hope, however, that the Obama campaign was not so callous as to give Warner the nod without vetting/negotiating their position with the Clintons -- perhaps in exchange for the prime-time slot that Bill was given on Wednesday night. To have had Hillary keynoting on Tuesday and then Bill headlining on Wednedsay -- he will surely upstage the VP's speech -- might have risked a Clinton overdose. There are risks in doing things this way too, however.
Biggest loser in all of this? Tim Kaine, who if given the VP slot, might seem like sloppy seconds next to Warner.
MORE GOSSIP: As a couple of commenters have pointed out, there are some interesting tea leaves to read here regarding Kathleen Sebelius.
According to the Kansas City Star:
Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will speak at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. And here's what Sebelius told CQ Politics on Monday:
The Democratic National Convention Committee said Tuesday that McCaskill will speak on the convention’s opening day, Aug. 25, along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Michelle Obama. They will talk about national unity.
Sebelius — a co-chairwoman of the convention — also will address the delegates, a party spokeswoman said, although the exact day and time has not been decided.
On Monday, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Obama adviser Anita Dunn announced the themes for the various nights of the convention, including "Securing America's Future" for the third night, when the vice presidential candidate will speak. So every potential vice presidential choice has a speaking slot. Kathleen Sebelius has a speaking slot. Except, unlike Claire McCaskill, or Mark Warner, or Ted Strickland, or Hillary Clinton, the Democrats are not yet ready to assign her a specific slot. She is, to my knowledge, the only Democrat thus far guaranteed a speaking slot without having a particular night assigned to her.
When asked whether the thematic choices could be read as an indication that the VP pick would be someone with a strong background on veterans issues, according to CQ reporter Marie Horrigan, Sebelius said that nothing should be read into that.
"Every potential vice presidential choice also has a speaking slot and so nothing should be read into themes or issues or ideas," Sebelius said.
To be fair, a lot of people speak at the convention, so the mere fact that Sebelius has a slot shouldn't mean all that much. But it certainly seems that she's (still) on the short list. I would also note that there would be a certain symmetry to the following pattern of speakers:
Monday -- Michelle Obama
Tuesday -- Hillary Clinton, Mark Warner
Wednesday -- Bill Clinton, Kathleen Sebelius
Thursday -- Barack Obama
You would have, essentially, three "couples" speaking: Michelle and Barack to bookend the convention (the present), Hillary and Bill in the middle (the past), and then Warner and Sebelius (the future), who aren't a couple, but who hit many of the same themes.

Nice, I never thought that was an appropriate speech for Sen. Hillary Clinton to be giving anyway ...
Keynotes should be reserved for Fresh Faces, just like Sen. Obama 4 years ago ...
That said, a lot of people will be looking to hear what the Clintons have to say in their speeches so it will still be a major Press fan fair anyway and may just even trounce Warner's Speech ...
This convention will be very exciting I can't wait ...
I'm really disappointed because Warner won't be the VP.
I don't know what's his damn problem with rejecting the VP slot.
I think it means that Kaine is not getting a VP slot.
I hope they know what they are doing. I really don't want to antagonize Hillary's people without a good reason. I trust that Plouffe and company know what they're doing but this does come as a surprise.
If Obama loses, Warner will be candidate in 2012 against Hullary and Obama will endorse him.
Interesting that they would let this announcement come out now.
Warner seems like a smart choice for keynote. He will win BIG in VA in Nov & should help Obama flip that state [more than Kaine].
Looking forward to the VP announcement as it will be telling for how he will conduct business as POTUS.
Has Gore been given a speaking role in Denver ? Maybe he will do the stadium intro...
If I correctly understand reporting from VA, the Senate seat would be a toss-up if any other Dem ran. I think Warner rejected the VP slot because he has a strong chance of winning the Senate seat and continuing the effort to turn VA blue.
Smitty: re: VA Senate
Warner - an excellent DEM candidate for 'o8
Gilmore - not so much for GOP
Warner in a cakewalk.
Also noted that on Tuesday they announced that McCaskill & Sebelius would speak at Democratic National Convention on opening day along with Pelosi & Michelle Obama.
Betting that officially removes Sebelius from Veep watch - but I never thought she had a real chance anyway. Same for Claire.
However, it does show that Obama rewards loyalty !
Wow, Warner..good call...
He is actually someone with a real business background, like Romney on the republican side, and unlike the most democratic VP contenders. Tuesday could become the "economy day" - Clinton could add a populist perspective.
Warner could run for president in 2012 if Obama loses, 2016 if Obama´s VP declines to run and 2020 if Obama selects an older/"more experienced" VP who will only run for one term (any VP contender around the age of 60, Sebelius, Clinton). He´ll be a winner for Democrats.
Looking more and more like Schweitzer....which makes me happy.
Perhaps someone can clear this up for me: the fact that Hilary's not giving the keynote, doesn't that seem to make the notion of her being the VP more likely? If not, why not?
Still hoping for Clark -
I wonder, though, if the campaign hasn't been trying to field test various names and/or get media coverage, the way it looks like they did with Kaine and Bayh.
Sebelius is not speaking on Monday -
http://www.demconvention.com/the-2008-convention-monday-august-25th-one-nation/
- which is quite striking because it seems to be the women´s issues day with Michelle, Maya Soetoro-Ng, Nancy Pelosi and Claire McCaskill speaking.
While I admire Schweitzer for his knowledge on energy issues and his ability to communicate that, he would have to "cancel" his re-election campaign which might look a bit dishonest in this interior, libertarian state. He does seem very folksy though, like Gore without the messianism. He can be a tremendous asset for winning Montana.
Alex,
oops - I mispoke after seeing the article on the KC Star online @
http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/story/745981.html
"McCaskill, Sebelius to speak at Democratic National Convention"
a closer read says Claire M. will speak on Monday, but at the end of the article it says:
"Sebelius — a co-chairwoman of the convention — also will address the delegates, a party spokeswoman said, although the exact day and time has not been decided."
Since she is co-chair would she not address the delegates on the opening day ?
my bad for assuming though...
@ dcm:
Thanks for the link. I am very much in favor of Sebelius so I see things through a certain lens in this regard. I am actually getting very excited right at the moment ;-). You are certainly right that Sebelius is going to speak... at some point... the source from that article is a spokeswoman who might or might not know the date and who just keeps it secret. I can´t help but thinking that if there was a time when she was going to speak as a "regular democrat" it would have been on Monday, but well, in her role as co-chair she has alot of control over her own speaking slot, so who knows....
On the other hand, there are other VP candidates not yet mentioned, Bayh, Kaine, Schweitzer and Biden.
Ok, last post for a while ;-)
I see Nate has updated the post and let me just say, and I know it´s maybe a ..little... early: Sebelius/Warner 2016... ok, that´s it :-P
There's no satisfying the Clinton diehards. They just can't accept it that their candidate lost. Hillary hasn't exactly gone out of her way to curtail these "PUMA" people, either. Her speech a week after she lost was great, but since then ... nothing much.
Personal vendettas reign supreme, don't they?
It´s also been noted that wednesday´s theme is same as Wes Clark´s PAC. "WesPAC-Securing America's Future."
Sebelius or Clark would probably be the best of the more speculated about picks (I don't see Schweitzer happening nor is anyone really speculating about him). I really hope Obama doesn't disappoint.
Either Sebelius or Dick Durbin will introduce Obama.
Wesley Clark fits perfectly into Wednesday night's theme - as does Jim Webb and Chuck Hegel.
Brian Schweitzer would have been an exellent choice for keynote speaker, which would have intoduced him to a national audience. The fact he isn't gets me wondering if he's on the VP list. He would definately be the most audacious pick.
I still think Wesley Clark or Schweitzer makes the most sense. Evan Bayh would almost guarantee Indiana, but he has negatives with the base. Biden would be Obama's Cheney. He can't pick a woman ahead of Hillary...according to nutjobs like Lanny Davis and Geraldine Ferraro. Basically, I don't have a clue who'll be VP. I just hope it isn't Chuck Hegel, Jack Reed or Tim Kaine.
What else would Hillary and her supporters expect? You run a divisive, racially tinged campaign and it pisses off the other side.
Vote Obama, not only does it win the White House, it gets rid of Hill and Bill as the only power in this party.
I think Rachel Maddow sums it up the BEST ...
"Why should Hillary Clinton be the only female to break the boundaries of female success in the present and near future. Women who think in that direction are being disingenuous ..."
Democrats '08
One more bit of tea-leaf reading - the email/text announcement gimmick. Sure, it is a bit of a gimmick. But it is also a very non-traditional announcement strategy, and one I think works best with a choice well-informed supporters will like.
I'm thinking this makes Bayh a less likely option, since he is the 'safe' mainstream media type of choice. Bayh is a guy you put in front of the network cameras and let the media do the selling.
i think i have my head up on a cloud, im so irrationally ecstatic.
I've been a sebelius fan for as long as i can remember because she's so temperamentally compatible with him and that she represents all the themes that obama has taken and amplified in this race: hope, unity, bipartisanship in order to get things done, competence (the way he conducts himself and runs his campaign.), and I think that mark warner and her have that hands-on managerial excellence that we need (i need) in our next president in order to get things working. (pretty much, my concern is governance, not electioneering)
so, i guess within the next few days, im just gonna work on dampening the excitement because deep down, im very skeptical she'll be the one. but i sure am glad she's got a speaking slot. I guess, i'll be happy with anyone obama chooses ultimately.
"One more bit of tea-leaf reading - the email/text announcement gimmick. Sure, it is a bit of a gimmick. But it is also a very non-traditional announcement strategy, and one I think works best with a choice well-informed supporters will like."
i don't know if anyone's picked up on this before but ultimately, i think this has to be assessed from the viewpoint of organizing. Think Oprah in that South Carolina Stadium. 30,000 people show up and the obama campaign has one of the largest phonebanking drives that can partially be credited with their 28-point thumping of senator clinton.
So, this is one of those things that'll definitely encourage people to get involved in the campaign on a personal level, and to feel part of the movement
(i know he's not running so much as movement candidate anymore, but plouffe still occasionally refer to the movement aspect of it. so, i think they're just de-emphasizing it until they've mastered all the meat and bread issues.)
Just a thought. Possibly Obama will pick a party elder in his 70`s to serve as a one term VP and then pick Warner for VP in 2012 looking ahead for a person to win in 2016.
At a very pragmatic level, the winning presidential candidate must get at least some votes from people who are older and/or less progressive than the Democrat base.
There are plenty of excellent female candidates for VP, but my guess is that Obama will make a huge effort not to create the impression that any group of people is unwelcome. That likely means a VP who is male, white, and "moderate".
Whether this is fair or not is a peculiar question.
It's worth noting that a true progressive party gives everyone an opportunity.
Of course neither Democrats nor "liberals" remotely exclude straight white or Asian males, but as a straight white male liberal, I am keenly aware that the Republicans work hard to create this impression. ("You needed that job but they gave it to a mi-nority...").
We just had an incredible historic event - a major party primary between a woman and an African-American man, in the context that either would be the favored candidate in the general election.
I suspect that Obama will now send the message "White guys, you have nothing to worry about".
It may reflect poorly on our society that such a message needs to be sent, but Obama's job is to get elected.
Barriers are being broken at a record pace this year, no matter who the VP candidate is.
I think Warner will be Obama's veep. Something's fishy about the convention scheduling.
I hope he picks Sibelius.
Gabe,
Warner pulled himself out of the running early on. He said he would not take the job. He wants to be in the Senate first.
This is like 1996 all over again.
The DNC keynote speaker was a former popular Governor of a Red State running for the US Senate.
The VP candidate is a son of a former US Senator who ran for
President. He went to school in St Albans.
The Republican Presidential Candidate is a 70 year old War Hero.
Who, McCain? He wasn't a war hero. Unless being bottom of your class at the naval academy and relying on his father's connections... getting shot down and captured while dropping bombs on women and children, then folding under pressure while being interrogated qualifies. Check out General Clark's record - that's a WAR HERO.
Btw, I say interrogated because Mc Crypt Keeper flip-flopped on torture to appease Bush/Cheney and the conservative nutbase.

Darn straight. Any of you so-called PUMAs thinking that Hillary will win in 2012, forget it.
I admit, though, that I am mildly perturbed that Mark Warner and Kathleen Sebelius didn't run for Presdient. I'd take either of them for President over any of the actual candidates.
Anyone notice Biden hasn't been mentioned at all and is keeping an incredibly low-profile. That, coupled with it being a night of national security makes me think there's a pretty good chance it might actually be Biden.
At this point, I think it's Wes Clark, with the theme for the convention being centered on Veterans, not to mention the blow-up between Georgia and Russia. Right up General Clark's alley. I'd be happy with that choice but I would also be happy to be wrong and have it be Joe Biden. I know a number of people that are on the fence with Obama but would vote for him with Biden on the ticket.
Also, I am sick to death of hearing about the WATB Pumas. I am a woman, too, and think these women are giving the rest of us a bad name. Hillary lost. GET OVER IT. And, if Hillary doesn't show herself to be visibly 150% behind Obama's candidacy and he loses, it will be an EXTREMELY cold day in hell before I cast a vote for her, even if it means I die never seeing a woman president. That is something I would very much like to see but not so much that it over-rides all other considerations, the way it appears to with these PUMA people. Sheesh. Get a grip.
What are the chances it's Kerry for VP? He's a vet, like Clark.
I'm with you, fastmovingcloud, on the Pumas. How stupid to support McCain who is the opposite of Hillary on the issues. We will have a woman president in the not too distance future, but it won't be Hillary. Once a candidate loses like this in the primary, it is highly unlikely the big donors will back them again.
But I don't believe there are very many Pumas. It's just another non-story to try to make this race seem closer than it is and the press won't let go of because they aren't creative enough to go out and find real stories.
I don't think it needed to be said that Warner and Sebelius aren't a 'couple'. Besides, aren't there rumorios about Warner being a little 'feng shui'? Or is that scurrilous of me?!
I think Sebelius would be a good choice, because I have a feeling that all these PUMAs out there are more in love with Hillary Clinton the woman than Hillary Clinton the candidate. So if Obama picks Sebelius, the PUMAs will make some noise initially, but they'll still turn out to vote for Obama.
S. Michael
I don't think it will be Kerry for the same reason I never bought the Edwards speculation (pre-adultery, of course): Americans want to vote for a winner, and that's a hard image to maintain after losing a presidential election. I think Nixon coming back in '68 was a unique situation, and not one that will be replicated in our lifetimes.
But beyond that, Kerry would be an awful choice. I'm still mad at the Democrats for putting up that no-charisma hack in 2004, and I even privately wonder if the Clintons engineered it that way so that Hillary would have a lock in 2008.
"S. Michael said...
What are the chances it's Kerry for VP?"
Um... zero?
I think everyone is missing what is going on here. Someone above made the point and it occured to me this morning as well. Hillary is out on Tuesday night because Wednesday night is hers. She's the VP pick. It kind of makes sense in the context of the vp/text thing. The campaign did something similar when it decided to opt out of federal funds...it e-mailed and texted the supporters first with their explanation spelled out before the talking heads could define it. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that is what they are doing. I really hate Hillary, but the more I think about this, the more it makes sense when it comes to places like Florida and possibly Michigan. It brings some of the enthusiasm back in places where they were in danger of losing old people. The more I think about this, the more I see it. Like it or not...Obama/Clinton '08
Well, if he was going to pick Clinton, of course he'd do it once the talking heads convinced themselves it'd be someone else.
But I concur: Clinton is a baaaad VP pick, for several reasons. I hope you're wrong about this, David.
Hillary isn´t out on Tuesday, she will speak, too, before Mark Warner. By now, I also wonder if this combination of hers and Warner is an implicit threat: If the Clintons try to spoil the race for Obama it´s not going to be Hillary in 2012...it´ll be Warner.
I also wonder why Gore doesn´t have a slot yet - and, just to test a hypothesis of mine, I wonder if Chelsea Clinton is going to speak (on a less prominent slot). Richardson is also missing, Clark, too, but I guess he will speak as "chairman" of the Veteran/military agenda.
I like Obama/Clinton very much because I want to win and I don’t want to take any chances about winning. After 8 years of Bush, with Supreme Court nominations surely coming up, after the next 5 months where Bush with administrative rulings and executive orders shreds vast amounts of progress we cannot let Old John take over. If we have another Republican administration, say goodbye to progress, health care, and the middle class and watch the immigration problem disappear as our entry wages fall to near par with Mexico.
No to Sebelius, it would be madness. I work with a women’s concern as their accountant and these 16 women and my wife were mostly Obama supporters in the caucuses here in Washington State. They are definitely not PUMA’s; but, and you better believe this antidotal evidence, they get very angry at the idea of a woman other than Clinton getting the spot. They believe she has earned it and Obama better remember which sex is his base. They don’t want to anoint a conservative from a dinky red state. The wind would be out of the liberal’s sails and Obama better also remember that he is running a campaign based on GOTV, the ground game, and self funding.
Naturally McCain will pick his VP second. Republicans do not give away advantages. If Obama picks a white guy, McCain will pick a woman, (almost immediately), and have his own instant change pitch. The race will be a dead heat and the republicans will be close enough to get away dragging him into the mud.
I know Obama is a smart guy and one of the things that means is that he has better polling then we see. Naturally, he has a little, or probably a lot of dislike for Clinton after her behavior in the delegate race, not to mention her current catharsis. I have believed all along he has been looking at those polls and saying can I win for sure without Clinton. I say we know now the answer is no, not for sure, and I say he needs to suck it up and pick her for the good of the country and the party. On the bright side, raising money, holding blue states, and flipping Ohio, and/or New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, and/or Florida gets much easier. OC in 08, we need to turn this turkey of a government around!
The dems should get someone to really trumpet the new stance they are making in the new abortion platform. It is going from safe, legal, and rare - to fast, legal, and free. Slate has a great article on this abortion issue and the Dems taking back the issue.
Sebelius is now a speaker - and scheduled.
But really? How hard would it be to simply move the day.
We can now rule out these people as Obama's running mate- http://thepage.time.com/2008/08/13/tuesday-in-denver-comes-into-focus/
IT WONT BE SEBELIUS OR SCHWEITZER.

I'm kinda sick of the "it can't be a woman if it's not Hillary" logic, mainly because it's a little insulting to women.
Hillary Clinton worked all her life to break glass ceilings for women, only to construct a brand new one right underneath her? I'm sorry, I just don't buy it.
On a strategic side, putting Clinton ticket takes away our biggest advantage this cycle: depressed GOP morale.
Awww... good bye Sebelius AND Schweitzer... damn, I hope it´s not Bayh or Kaine, but Bayh has to be regarded as the favorite now. It makes sense if Hagel, Clark and Biden speak on Wednesday, but Bayh´s strength would have been the economy.
Robby:
Thanks, its exciting, my first response.
About waking up sleeping elephants, yes I agree that is a potential worry but on the other hand I say that side always show up in the end anyway, like those guys from “Night of the Living Dead” or those girls from “The Stepford Wives”.
About the argument insulting women, if so it’s not my insult, truly I am reporting what my women co-workers are telling me. To elaborate, they are sympathetic to the PUMA arguments although definitely too liberal to ever think about saying they might vote for McCain. They want Clinton to be recognized as the other powerbase in the party and they want her collaborated with, not put down. In a feminine spirit they say why not share? Obama lapped the field except remember Clinton was right there with him, almost as many votes, almost as many delegates. We have two women senators and a woman governor and those of us that elected them like the way women approach the job. It seemed that Obama approaches the job in the same way. So Obama, join up, take on the other super candidate, she paid her dues. I believe it is in that sense that they don’t want any woman other than Clinton, this time, not forever. For the reasons I put forth before, the VP needs to be a woman and that woman needs to be Clinton to keep the base enthused about the GOTV work we all need to do. .
Hilary voted for the war in Iraq, as did Bayh and Biden.
That doesn't give them much credibility for being foreign policy or security experts since they believed Cheney's dog and pony show about Iraq.
I modulate my comment above - I believe that it could be Hillary. Either Hillary or a "moderate white male".
"That doesn't give them much credibility for being foreign policy or security experts since they believed Cheney's dog and pony show about Iraq."
Yes, but McCain is essentially running on the claim that he still believes the Cheney version.
The Magic Perfect Progressive Who Can Win Fairy isn't running this year.
There are two realistic choices. The Democrats or McCain. All actions that you can take effectively support one or the other.
Well, they could always pull a bait-and-switch with Sebelius or Schweitzer...fingers crossed...
Looks like the Top Three are Bayh, Clark, and Biden. (Meh.) I think it's funny that Al Gore doesn't have a speaking slot scheduled, though, does he?
gliadrachan:
Good point about Clinton and the dog and pony show. The other half of my mind, perhaps the better half, keeps coming back to that problem. Bayh should definitely be disqualified because he put on his own dog and pony in support of the war with McCain no less. Despite millions of us out in the streets against the war to let the dems know it would be okay to oppose the war they let themselves be bullied into it. Sad and bad when the leadership is so far behind the party. I like Biden a lot personally but as a party grey beard he blew his moment to stand with Byrd against the madness, and Byrd needed the help.
So can I say if O does pick a pro-war VP despite their failing us all, it should be Clinton? The "carpet bagging" junior senator from New York, a woman, with an eye on the presidency, thought she needed to be "tough" like Schumer, like the majority of the boys. Iraq had nothing to do with the Twin Towers but was it an extra political calculation for these two anyway? Anybody for an anti-war woman, Murry,( WA) or Stabenow,(MI)?
Barack,
Please please please please go after Colin Powell for VP. I beg you.
ALEX S, -
I believe that it was announced that Chelsea would be the intro speaker for Hillary.
Have Caroline Kennedy & Maria Shiver been announced yet for speaking slots ???
Those ladies are DEM royalty & should get Teddy's slot...
Powell quite possibly could have become president as a republican but he stepped aside like a butler for Bush. Powell embarrassed us all with that cock sure about bullshit UN presentation. Powell is old news, leave him dead and buried, (politically). And anyone that could raise a jackass like his son, no way never.
( Hagel also voted yes in Oct 2002 )
If all of the announced speakers are in fact not going to be the vp pick, and if anyone who voted for the war is not going to be the vp pick, and IF all of the public denials by other vetted candidates ( Webb, Reed, etc. ) are true, the field of running mates is narrowed quite a bit.
The Dem Senators that are still in office and voted NO and aren't already speaking and haven't publicly declined are a thin list.
Of the Dem Governors who aren't speaking at the convention, and all the figures from the past ( Gore, Kerry, Nunn )
Gov Kaine?
Gov Richardson?
Sen Reed?
Gen Clark? ( "... Securing America’s Future,” which just also happens to be the name of Gen. Wesley Clark’s political action committee...." )
Either one of the speakers is going to be the pick, OR someone who has previously declined has been convinced to say Yes, OR the pick will be a complete surprise, a previously unsuspected candidate.
